Zaha and Maupay on target as Brighton earn late draw at Selhurst Park

We conclude our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 6 write-ups with analysis of Crystal Palace v Brighton and Hove Albion.

For a summary of all seven of Saturday’s games, click here, while the footer at the bottom of this piece will direct you to our detailed Scout Notes on the other Gameweek 6 action.

CRYSTAL PALACE 1-1 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

  • Goals: Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) | Neal Maupay (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Conor Gallagher (£5.7m) | Joel Veltman (£4.4m)
  • Bonus points: Maupay x3, Veltman x2, Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) x1, Zaha x1

ZAHA CONVERTS FROM THE SPOT

Having stepped up to convert a first-half penalty, Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) has now scored five goals in his last five games against Brighton at Selhurst Park.

The 28-year-old carried most of the Eagles’ threat on the night, as Patrick Vieira’s side launched the majority of their attacks down his flank, with Zaha and Tyrick Mitchell (£4.5m) as involved as any in the final-third.

Despite tonight’s late set-back, it’s been a reasonable start to the season for Palace, who have six points from their opening six games. During that run, they’ve had a tricky set of fixtures, having already faced Liverpool and Chelsea, while it’s also worth noting that they remain unbeaten at home.

In an attacking sense, they have registered a league-low 14 shots on target, while only Spurs have accumulated fewer goal attempts. However, their 7.44 xG ranks mid-table, and there is potential to do well with Leicester City and Newcastle United’s shaky defences up next at Selhurst Park.

GALLAGHER LOSES SET-PIECES

In another energetic midfield display, Conor Gallagher (£5.7m) bagged an assist after winning the first-half penalty. The on-loan Chelsea man has now netted two goals and three assists this season, and ranks 11th amongst all midfielders for FPL points.

However, with Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) returning to the starting XI tonight, he was no longer on set-pieces.

Considering that 0.56 of his 0.84 xA total had arrived from dead-ball situations, it is a blow for his owners, though it is worth noting that he did take them back on once the Serb had departed on 72 minutes, which is something to monitor moving forward.

Conor Gallagher’s touch heatmap v Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 6

“The players are as disappointed as I am, the fans too. To concede a goal like that with the last kick is difficult to accept. We have to look at the game and how difficult we made it for them. They’re a good side with a lot of confidence. We should take the three points.

We gave them so many problems. The way they played the last 15 minutes with long balls doesn’t look like them. Not scoring the second goal left the door open. That was an important moment for us. It was a tough game. Both teams didn’t create much.

We are improving. We’re getting stronger. The first few games we played against Chelsea, Liverpool, West Ham, we managed to create chances. We deserve to have more points so far. We’re in a good process.” – Patrick Vieira

FOUR IN SIX FOR MAUPAY

Neal Maupay’s (£6.5m) late equaliser was his fourth Premier League goal of the season, as he moved up to fifth in the forward standings after picking up three bonus points.

Graham Potter lined his troops up in a 3-4-1-2 formation, but switched to a back four in the second-half in an attempt to get back into the game.

However, despite that change of shape, they generally didn’t do enough in the final-third, though there was real quality about their late equaliser, with Joel Veltman (£4.4m) sending the ball through to Maupay, who dinked it over the keeper and into the back of the net.

Interestingly, goalkeeper Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) bagged a bonus point despite conceding and picking up a late yellow-card, having created a big chance for Danny Welbeck (£6.0m) in the first-half.

Further forward, the influential Yves Bissouma (£4.6m) missed tonight’s match with a knee injury. It’s fair to say the Seagulls missed his energy and ability to break up play in midfield, with further updates expected in the coming days over his availability for Gameweek 7.

As a result of the draw, Brighton remain undefeated in all three of their Premier League away matches this season, with Arsenal (h) up next before the international break.

C Palace XI: Guaita, Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell, Milivojevic (Kouyate 72), McArthur, Gallagher, Ayew (Schlupp 86), Zaha, Edouard (Benteke 72)

Brighton XI: Sanchez, Duffy, Dunk, Burn (Alzate 45, Moder 65), Veltman, Gross, Lallana, Cucurella, Trossard, Welbeck (Connolly 76), Maupay

If Shaw is injured. Is Shaw+ CR7 > Rudiger + Lukaku -4 reasonable??? CR7 without pens is actually putting me off him slightly.

No WC. It’s a medium term move, targeting Chelseas fixtures through to GW11

Losing Ronaldo for a hit just seems crazy to me personally. I get the move of course but no guarantees by any means that Lukaku hauls and Ronaldo doesn't, Everton are very leaky and hard to know what Southampton will turn up, they held ManUtd to 1-1 and City to 0-0 recently remember

I have a one gameweek punt.

Are there any midfielders up to 9m you think are a great option? I'm not really seeing any.

If that's the case it looks like a defender up to 6.7m, got to be one of the Chelsea boys right?

    1. Inter Me Gran
      • 8 Years

Got to be, alonso is more exciting but see if he plays mid week. Rudiger is prob the safer bet

It could even be Chilwell should we get some more info during the week. I think the Champions League game should make Tuchels rotation more predictable this week?

He is but I'd say him playing against Soton (who'll likely sit in deep) rather than Werner makes sense as he'll float behind Lukaku looking to play him or the wide men in, could be a good shout

      This is a 4-4-3 squad

Two budget attackers can surely combine for Grealish or Jesus, right?

I could, but I really want to have 15 playing players as Alonso and Cancelo can be rotated any time, if Rap is flagged and won't be able to play this weekend I could go 4-3-3 but if he does then one of ASM or a defender would be benched...

    Top 10K Finally weekly update

Buendiarrhoea was narrowly the team of the week with 71 points narrowly pipping Dynamic Duos and No Way on 70. Up the top Abra Dubravka and Grealicious look comfortable in the top 10k, Plenty of other teams close enough as the margins are really tight. If you take one point a week as negligible then there are 20 teams within 32 points of top 10k.

It's largely a 7 player league with Mo TAA Ronaldo and Antonio so generic to make no difference and captaincy fail for Ron was relatively insignificant given everyone owned Mo and Tony who returned without hauling.

The threemium template set up grew once with 20% of the teams on it. Also signs of people beginning to move onto the competing big at the back template. Chelsea defence - despite fixture - rose and now outstrips Wolves defence. Shaw is owned by 55% of teams including the loads of teams that already played WC.

Only around a quarter of WCs still to come.

20 which equates to around 40%

Half of those already have Ron too so I'm guessing they are fairly committed threemiums.

Interesting, so going Ronaldo(c) may not make much difference!

My team went from 52% (moderately differential) to 83%(extremely differential) after addition of Ronaldo. Cant wait to get rid already 😀

Just a guess but I reckon Lukaku will be 75% league owned next time. He's the obvious captain pick really and so far when there's been a clear captain choice people have flocked there.

Early BB has paid this time

Almost all the top teams have played BB bu their lead is greater than BB score. Not quite sure how that works - perhaps early WC? But there again some oddities didn't follow up BB with WC 😉

4 early BBs and they are all top 20K or so

Delaying WC this year could backfire, TV down, late on Chelsea/Man City player etc etc...

Thing is that almost all teams are committing to nothing in midfield and investing up top or at the back. It could last of course but I don't see it. The likes of Sarr Benny Gray Gallagher are all outperforming and will revert imo - the 6.0 dominance doesn't feel like something that will be more than a phase.

Would much prefer to have WC in back pocket for 14/15 or so.

Positive of big at back or upfront is concentration of cash in one place, makes it easy to switch around with couple of transfers when things change. Something like Alonso to Veltman gives cash for Benrahma to Jota/Greenwood, Luka to Toney and Gallagher to Grealish or something like that.

Getting likes of Son/Vardy/Mahrez is tricky though.

Oh is the Zaha Mahrez deal on again 🙂

Still interested in Auba here as a placeholder for that type if nothing else. 9.9 looks very underpriced for a potential Golden Boot candidate.

Need to add some weight. As the weeks are passing, you are getting far away from Zaha 😉

                  I may consider Grealish though.

Other point there is your sale value is likely pretty close to most teams with a much higher transfer value. My TV is now around 102 but the sale value is way less than that. A bugger of course that you will struggle for maxed out premium defence but that could yet turn out to be a blessing - 3 enough?

What are people's thoughts on KDB's potential moving forwards? Too soon?

Weighing up a few options and one of them is Ronaldo and Greenwood to Antonio and KDB. (probably next week)
Otherwise it's follow the masses with Ronaldo to Lukaku but would then need to try and get Antonio another way.
Ultimately would like Dias/Cancelo by GW9 for Marcal too.
Keeping Vardy for the foreseeable, as I think he's being outrageously overlooked.

    Team is:

    Sanchez (4.0)
    TAA Rudiger Marcal (Livra WIlliams)
    Salah Raph Gray Gallagher Greenwood
    Ronaldo Vardy (Dennis)
    0.1 ITB 0FT

    Any thoughts?

To me, KDB feels like he should be about 10.0

He has glass tendons, refuses to take penalties even when on them, has a rotational manager despite the usual “but when he’s fit he plays”, and will inevitably require FT consumption on the way in and out, usually unforeseen and at inopportune timing

10.0 would have encouraged a punt on him at times this season, similar to Son

To have him at 12.0 just seems silly - especially given his previous 6 season point totals

      1. Boberella
        • 7 Years

        Valid points.
When he's on form he's a great FPL player to own. Will see what Ronaldo and Lukaku do and how City line up this GW and assess further then.

        • 14 Years

*And that’s not to say he can’t put up 6 or 7 returns in his next 4 fixtures either, but lots of players are capable of doing that from an FPL perspective (even though basically no one in world football is capable of doing what he does from a pure footballing standpoint)

        1. Boberella
          • 7 Years

Totally. The urge is purely based on his potential/history for hauls and being so good when he's in form. Needs to prove he's gonna survive a few GWs injury free I suppose

      • 3 Years

Too much of a risk until he demonstrates he's clearly injury-free. He's got too much competition at his price tag and City attack will likely continue to spread the points IMO.

Hit the wildcard as had a few players out and non playing bench.
Teams are very similar but I am leaning more towards team A.

    (A)
    Ramsdale Foster
    Alonso Rudiger Alexander Cancelo Liveramento
    Brownhill Grealish Doucoure Raphinha Salah
    Antonio Lukaku Toney
    0 in the bank

    (B)
    Ramsdale Foster
    Alonso Rudiger Alexander Cancelo Liveramento
    Smith-Rowe Grealish Doucoure Raphinha Salah
    Antonio Lukaku Archer
    0.9 in the bank

So basically, given Archer and Brownhill aren't exactly gold assets, it's a pick between:

      b) Smith Rowe + 0.9ITB

Probably B for me, given fixtures and cash to spend.

    Bachmann

    Salah Traore Jota Sarr
    Bamford Antonio Ronaldo

1FT 1.5m in the bank. No idea what to do with this lot. If Bachmann and Bamford are confirmed fit may just do Ronaldo to Lukaku and stick to the plan. Can upgrade Livra to Cancelo in gw8. Any other thoughts?

    Sanchez

    Ronaldo / Lukaku / Antonio

Subs: Steele / Allan / Douglas Luiz / Williams

If ronaldo and lukaku blanks, thats 4 point, costing 24+ m. If antonio+jimenez blanks 4 points, costing 15.5 m.
Unless they are being Captained, premiums are poor value for money. I would rather have one of Ronaldo/lukaku and spread the money in mid/defence

Yes, I've read this. A lot of these are up for interpretation imo. What is a key pass? What is missing a big chance? Or Creating a big chance (a chance where the receiving player should score)? Many players would probably answers these questions differently. I'd like a place where I can see exactly how the players got their points. I believe that existed before, might still do though, idk.

He was practically playing as an outfield player in the first half, as Brighton kept passing back to him. I’ve not seen him play before and was surprised at how comfortable and assured he is on the ball.

He also registered 1 (maybe 2) chance creations.

Created a big chance for welbeck didn't he? That always brings in a lot of bps.

Yup. If scoring or assisting were all that counted, Salah could have been on 350-400 points in one of these seasons by now

And it also kinda defeats the point of having a BPS system, if it just simply gives extra points for having the highest points.

Well the palace Brighton bps scores were so awful that you didn't have to do a lot to be in with a chance of an extra point. Benrahma was incredibly creative and deserved his point imo.

That said, There's been a few surprising ones which I've been grateful for this season, the 2 above, Gilmour last week, and Shaw and Trent both got 2 bonus when conceding earlier in the season. It just depends how the games pan out really.

Yeah. The statistical best players on the pitch should be rewarded even if they blank. It doesn't happen when they play horribly, of course, or if there are too many scorers who didn't rack up -ve BPS

Sanchez set up Welbeck for a 1v1 which he probably should have scored so I'm assuming it was that but yeah it's really odd sometimes. Martinez got 2bps in a game where Villa scored 3 goals and he made just 1 save the other week.
