Sell Ronaldo for Lukaku in Gameweek 7? What FPL managers are thinking

A favourable fixture swing for Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) going into Gameweek 7 has seen the Belgian attract around 175,000 new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) at the time of writing.

The Blues rise to the top of our Season Ticker for the medium term, with their next five league matches, in particular, standing out:

For those FPL bosses keen on Lukaku, how to acquire him is the next dilemma.

A ‘three premium’ set-up means that Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.7m) wouldn’t have to be sold to accommodate the Belgian, although that would require considerable sacrifices elsewhere.

For those with space for only two heavy hitters, then it might be a case of ditching the top-scoring Fantasy asset, Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), and reallocating funds up top, or, more likely, offloading Ronaldo in a like-for-like swap.

The veteran Portuguese is the second most-sold forward of Gameweek 7 so far, with just over 100,000 transfers out at the time of writing.

We delve into the responses from both our on-site poll and Hot Topic to see what the Fantasy Football Scout community is thinking.

Just for the next gameweek, do Wolves defenders cover off Chelsea defenders in terms of points?

I'd imagine both are up for cleansheets.

Of course not. Wolves are one of the better defensive teams in the league, but Chelsea have the best defence in Europe most likely

Good performance, but I will wait a bit more before bringing one in. We all know Arsenal are easily one of those sides who can be consistently inconsistent and hence infuriating. Will wait and see how we do against Brighton as I feel that would be a much more difficult game than Spurs.

Brighton are a good side, very defensive minded as well. Would rather target Tierney or even Tomiyasu instead, and the attackers (Saka better but ESR if nailed would be nice)

If you have Ronaldo and Shaw/James then Lukaku can wait a week, get Chelsea DEF.

      1. Boly Would
        • 7 Years

No Ronaldo. Lukaku would be for Ings but would mean having to also get Bruno out to afford it, so Shaw to Chelsea DEF would wait a week.

I'm probably going for Lukaku first as I want to captain him but depends on the state of your defence.

    3. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

      Not enough information.
      It depends.
eg if you're looking to ditch Semedo, it can wait a week. If it's Shaw and he turns out to be not fit to play, get a defender.
If Lukaku is coming in for Bamford - yes. If it's Ronaldo or Vardy, maybe it can wait.

      1. Boly Would
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

        It's for Shaw.
Lukaku would be for Ings, but means losing Bruno to afford it and therefore leaving Shaw to Chelsea for another week.
Rest of defence is TAA, Coufal, Semedo, White.

    Assuming no injuries

    TAA + Omdele to:

    A) Canc + Christiensen

    C) Rudiger + Alonso

Kind of like the City Chelsea spread but not quite the players I’d like.

You can't put it like that, since Oma is not in his starting XI, but on his bench.

It's more the case of TAA + a rotating starting player at around 4.5 like White, Luiz, Sissoko, Livramento, Duffy (depending on fixture) vs. Cancelo + Alonso playing week in and week out.

          Not TAA + Oma

why do you make the assumption is not in his XI? When a question is framed like that you have to assume they are

              • 7 Years

Because I can't see a team owning 3 players, that you want to bench ahead of Oma?

I think you both make decent points. It wouldn’t be a case of Oma playing regularly. I’d be rotating Liv/Duffy and playing Semedo for the next few. Having said that I think TAA + Liv/Duf are outscored by any combination over the next few.

Any thoughts as to the best of the three options?

Everton are 5th, Southampton are 16th.

Okay I can give you that. Southampton might be comparable defensively to Everton, but Chelsea are better than United and look a more cohesive team.

True, but I guess I just don't see why we should care about that.

In a lot of ways I feel like United's relatively poor defence actually makes CR7 a BETTER captain option, because United often need to score 3 goals to win, but Chelsea can just take a 1-0 and go home.

Also, it means CR7 doesn't have to compete with his defensive teammates for baps.

Does no one else think like this?

          Don’t forget it’s just a poll.
Still think he will be the highest captained player especially for those who only own Lukaku and no Ronaldo AND there will be a number of wildcards activated this week to bring him in.
Saints have def improved since the start but you’d back Chelsea to bounce back from the city game

If you want a City double up in defense, one of Cancelo/Dias is a all but a lock, but for the second option would it make more sense to go with say
Ederson & 4.5 defender or Cancelo/Dias & 4.5 keeper? The defender or keeper could be say Ramsdale or White cause they seem good value. Ederson also gives more flexibility in running 3 or 4atb it seems

The one no one is mentioning or owning and won't rise in price is Walker. I'd say he's as nailed as any bar Dias.

Fully agree with you, plus he'll also pick up the odd assist from short passes and things like that as well, he has been in a few of my mock drafts so far. Dias is all but a lock so between Walker/Cancelo/Ederson and don't think I will triple up because think Grealish or Jesus may be worth a look

Defensive double is enough, I agree. I'd like to have both Cancelo and Laporte, but that could one risk too much, especially with Alonso currently in my WC team.

Ramsdale is 1.5 cheaper than Ederson whose ceiling is 6 basically pts without pen save. I don't think Ederson is that much better than Ramsdale. White has basically zero attacking attacking, so he is not my pick.

Made that play last season and it more or less panned out - Ederson matched or bettered Dias

Only issue I had was I chose the section of the season where City defence was utter gash 😉

Those minutes were pretty much. all very early season really when City defence was trash and Ederson scored maybe 5 points total. They really did track each other very closely for returns all season - slightly skewed iirc by an assist for Ederson.

Hold ft, or get rid of Jota/Greenwood?

    Martinez (Steele)
Matip - Marcal - Williams (Livramento, Duffy)
Salah - Jota - Greenwood - Sarr (McGinn)
    Ronaldo - Lukaka - Jiminez

Sold him for Rudiger once I saw reports of it potentially being a high ankle sprain. Long term plan is to have him + Rudiger anyway and I had 2FT and wanted to beat the price rises.

Selling for sure. He's no where close the the starting 11 right now. Tuchel said if Thiago was fit he would've started meaning James was going to be benched against City anyways. This a great opportunity to get rid of him and get the more nailed Azpi/Rudi.

Christensen was rested midweek no way was he being rested again on the weekend.

    1ft 0.8itb
    Sanchez / Steele
    Rudiger / TAA / Semedo / White / Livramento
    Salah / Jota / Traore / Sarr / Allan
    Ronaldo / Jiminez / Antonio

    Thinking GW7 Jota to Raphinha
GW8 Ronaldo to Lukaku, Semedo to Cancelo (-4)
    GW9 Traore to Saka

Obviously injuries/suspensions permitting, but do those look like the right priorities? Or should I forego Saka to try and get on double Chelsea or City defence sooner?

    Any thoughts/ideas greatly appreciated.

Ah thanks for the heads up re Harrison. Quite keen on a Leeds or Arsenal attacker with their fixtures and looking to offload Jota as he was always a short term hold with Bobby out. Will see how Pool line up tonight but think I'm likely to move Jota out regardless now Firmino is back and with Pool's fixtures worsening, just a question of Saka/ESR/Raph in.

Not sure doubling up on chelsea defence is a good idea. Just 1 error in the entire 90 minutes and 2 cs is gone.

The issue with this logic is it leads you to picking a worse option than
a player from one of the best defenses in the league with an excellent fixture run. Doubling up on the best defenses with favourable fixtures is a great way to play.

Are people going to risk getting Foden now that he is playing CF? It really is like staring down a barrel of a gun. Next thing you know Mahrez plays CF if Foden does not work out and then back to Torres plus Sterling getting minutes as well.

From City's attack, Jesus seems the only safe bet for decent returns unless Grealish is fully nailed and starts hauling regularly. Merry go round.

Fixtures are with Chelsea, but MCI being stronger defensively and Laporte probably a bit more rotation-resistant than Alonso with Chilwell coming into the mix.

Nice team. Jimi getting that goal last gw will be huge for him going forward. Expecting a more consistent returns from him in the coming games.

Why Greenwood over Raphinha, Sarr, Saka, Gallagher etc?

Rashford is coming back to join Greenwood, Pogba & Sancho in competing for 2 positions for a less attractive run of fixtures...

Agreed 100% and its purely because of transfers. Would love to get Raph in for him but not for a hit.
Got alonso in for shaw this GW

The biggest issue with picking a decent midfield at this point is because Bruno has gone off the boil. Most had Bruno and Salah at the start, enter Ronaldo and now it just seems difficult to hit a sweet spot in your midfield with only Salah and trying to figure out how to fill the gaps with too many iffy options for middle priced midfielders.

I know this may come back to bite me but probably gonna hold off on Lukaku until GW8/9 and go into GW7 with the following... already made my FT this week of Shaw to Rudiger.

    Sanchez
    TAA, Rudiger, Cancelo
    Sarr, Salah (vc), Greenwood, Harrison
    Jimenez, Antonio (C), Toney

    Steele, Williams, Brownhill, Livramento
    £6.3m ITB

Is Antonio a viable captain this week as an 'Acting Premium'?

Is laporte, cancelo, Diaz, rudiger and alonso overkill? And will it cover no taa

It can work but you are going to rely on Cancelo and Alonso for attacking returns if both City and CHE concede.

Then it is either a limp attack or midfield to boost your points.

That I guess is the biggest issue with going 5 at the back.

        Rest of team would be:

Salah raphina saka sarr and grey
        Lukaku Antonio.

So could rotate a mid and def based in fixtures.

I guess defo an all or nothing as you say.

The rest of your team is not as bad as i pictured. I'm not totally against it. I assume you haven't resorted to Foster as your no.1 keeper
