Gameweek 7 Wildcard team reveal: Lukaku over Ronaldo plus double City and Arsenal

Ex-FPL winner Simon March: How to avoid getting carried away with your GW1 picks

After a Gameweek 6 score of 44 and a fourth red arrow in succession, I embraced the ‘Sunday night Wildcard’ cliche and finally pushed the button. For this article, I’ll be sharing my current draft and a bit of the thinking behind it.

First off, a word on the timing of the Wildcard. While I had my fair share of yellow flags and underperforming players, it was mainly the concern that I would be priced out of the team I wanted that made me choose this Gameweek. As you’ll see, this necessitates greater investment in the Liverpool v Man City fixture than I’d ideally have liked and a Gameweek 8 Wildcard would not only have avoided that but, also, have allowed me to better mop up any problems that might occur during the preceding international break.

However, neither of those factors seemed significant enough to warrant holding off and, equally, there are opportunities to be gained from tapping into some of the good Gameweek 7 fixtures.

Finally, I’m approaching this Wildcard with a fairly long horizon and am targeting the players and teams that I think can deliver for the foreseeable future. Equally I’m seeking enough depth that my squad can cope with the unexpected. My hope is that this will help me establish a reliable enough foundation that I can use my transfers progressively rather than reactively going forwards.

So, without further ado, here’s my current Wildcard draft.

Goalkeepers

The Kasper Schmeichel (£5.1m) / Danny Ward (£4.0m) Leicester goalkeeper rotation is a hill I’m willing to die on this season having already had it from the start. While they are not the most popular picks between the sticks (ooh that rhymes), at least not in the FPL community, they haven’t done badly, averaging 3.0 points per game so far, despite Leicester’s dismal defending.

Schmeichel is second for saves made, which helps him in terms of save points and bonus points but just the one clean sheet is not all that convincing a return. That said, I do believe Leicester will improve, particularly with the return of Jonny Evans (£5.4m), and, also, that it is more likely that they will sort out their defensive problems than some currently better-performing options are likely to maintain their defensive solidity.

Finally, at £9.1m combined (£9.0m for me), Schmeichel/Ward offers a strong certainty of a playing goalkeeper for a fairly low cost.

Defenders

My strategy for the defence is to get three near-to-nailed-on players from what appear to be the three best defences in the league (Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea) and then, ideally, leave them for the rest of the season so I can focus my transfers elsewhere.

    Sorry for repost. Bottomed

    Guaita
    James*, TAA*, Alonso*, Semedo, Livra,
    Salah, Jota*, Raphinia*, Gilmour, Sissoko
    Ronaldo, Bamford*, Antonio

    1FT, 0.1 ITB

Can I survive the week with just Bamford -> Jimenez?

Could also do TAA -> Cancelo but don't really fancy losing trent. His upcoming fixture aren't bad.

Think I am going to go Bamford -> Toney or Jimenez for a -4.

Still have my WC but thinking of delaying for at least a few more weeks.
So would Toney (better long term I think) or Jimenez ( better for the next 3 games or so at least) be a better bet?

    Sanchez.
    Alonso, Rudiger, Coufal.
    Salah, Benrahma, Greenwood, Gray, Bissouma.
    Anto, Lukaku.
    Bachmann, TAA**, Bamford**, Tsimikas.
    0.0m ITB, 0ft.
Cancelo + Raphinha in next week for TAA/Coufal + Greenwood (-4).

Jimenez's fixtures look really good for the next few. That's where I'm going. We know he can tick along nicely once he's off the mark and he's got going now

Yeah, I can see the point here.

The thing is I think Toney will be a better long term pick either way (especially with price) so I need to decide do I move for him now or go with the probably the more safer Jimenez and leave the door open for Toney later anyway.

I can see the attraction. I'm considering bringing mbuemo in for Jota in a couple of weeks so will probably avoid Toney. He does look a decent pick though

    1. korbendallas82

      A. just cause i think other players can cover the three striker spots. I would be very tempted by Jesus other wise.
Grealish could be dominant coming weeks. But his returns so far is not convincing.

            Nope!
But fixtures usually breed form, and the City fixtures are amazing.
I'll probably hold on it now, maybe choose Son and then be able to get to KDB with 2 moves or so.

Foden might turn out to be the right pick too - I'm hoping that's the case. He could well be the preferred false 9 over Torres.

Rate my second WC draft please:

    Ramsdale (Foster)
    Alonso White Marcal (Livra WIlliams)
    Salah Benrahma Raphinha Smith-rowe (Bissouma)
    Ronaldo Lukaku Jesus

I think Raph and Jesus will likely miss GW8 if they play during IB..

Got it. I think Raphinha is a keeper, might lose Jesus and get TAA or something if needed.

Agree. I am WC-ing next week and thinking to get a 1-week punt and then get Raph back for GW 9 and 10.

Pouring everything over a good 11? That sounds great, but aren't you concerned about pep roulette?

I basically try to get a good starting 13 🙂 Feel like I should have some City cover for the good run.

Hmm might be worth doubling up on Chelsea defense or get Cancelo.

You sure about Alonso? Alot of people here recommending against him, including Chelsea fans

I really like him, had him since gw1. Guess I'll keep him until there's more convincing sign of rotation.

If its out of those 2, always Sanchez. Leeds defence is horrible, no point in having a keeper from there.

Which of these do we think will start this weekend?

    A: Coufal
    B: Greenwood
    C: Jota

A for sure. I'm not sure about Greenwood but I feel we could all be surprised by Jota starting the weekend, its not as impossible as some are making it out to be. With TAA out, Klopp will want some more attacking impetus which he brings in. Might be a 4-2-3-1 or Jota in the mf

Definitely agree with the Jota comment. With no TAA they might set up with Milner being more defensive and will need an extra attacker like Jota to get things moving upfront.

    Sanchez (Foster)
    Shaw Coady White (Livra TAA)
    Salah Saka Jota Greenwood Benrhama
    Antonio Lukaku (Scarlett)

    A) Jota > Raphinha -4
    B) Greenwood > Raphinha -4
    C) Shaw > Rudiger -4
    D) Nothing, just let Livra come on for Shaw if he doesn't play

I feel like Raphinha is a must have, such great value...just the GW8 status puts me off a bit. However, I would want him in my team after that anyway...so is this match worth it? Greenwood, I would probably remove after this game while Jota I'd like to keep for GW8 because of Firmino...what do you guys think?

I've almost been sure that I would do C but if I feel that I have more chance of making up the -4 with Raph rather than a Rudiger...and would want him in my team eventually. Very tempted with D but doubt I'll have the restraint to do nothing. Thanks!

    Front 3 is

    Antonio - Ronaldo - Jimenez.

Need to get Lukaku and I have enough funds to do Jimmy to Lukaku. Also considering Ronaldo to Lukaku. Jimmy has good fixtures but Ronaldo you know. One thing is that I am quite sure most ppl on My ML need to sacrifice Ron to get Lukaku so Ronaldo would be good differential in my ML most likely. So

    A) Ronaldo -> Lukaku
    B) Jimmy -> Lukaku

    1. Thinkering like a Boss

Surely not transfer Jimenez this week. I think it makes sense to do nothing.

That's a great front 3 this week. Just hold the transfer and reassess next week. Chelsea and Lukaku don't look so dangerous going forward. Would be more worried of Ronaldo hauling as everything goes through him.

Would you drop TAA and double up on CHE def for a - 4?

Already have Rudiger so thinking maybe AZP?

    Thoughts?

If you plan to hold TAA long term then I dont think this week matters, its against City anyway.

    2. Salan

      Do it.

To me, it's silly to keep 7.5/7.6 TAA whom will probably be out for 1 to 2 or even 3 gameweeks including an away match to ManU anyway. And in the same period, there are excellent fixtures for Chelsea and ManC. Why we still keep TAA? I really don't get this, that is irrelevant to his any great stats or performance in the past. We are talking about the coming few gameweeks.

One TAA plus a 4.5 defender can get 2 premium Chelsea/ManC defenders. Obvious choice to me, whatever -4 or -8.

I'm considering Ramsdale on my WC - is that kneejerk madness? I like him as a keeper but still very unsure about Arsenal. My back up is Foster. Are the sub 5 keepers good value at the moment?

Reckon there’s merit in an attacking back 5?

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Rudiger, Tierney
    Salah, Raphina
    Lukaku, Auba, Antonio

    Foster, Allan, Luiz, Brownhill
    Bank 0.0m

Appears I'm not the only one with keeper combo. Makes me feel better.

Yeah I actually do think there's merit and considered it myself. Personally I wouldn't have Auba and probably play a 5-3-2. If it goes south then you can balance it out in 2 transfers.

I think this is the first 523 i've seen. I think it leaves you with too little flexibility - eg if Raph misses GW8

That’s a fair point. May switch one of the defenders to Livra and get a mid priced mid instead.
