Brentford injury latest as budget FPL midfielder Mbeumo impresses

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 7 write-ups with analysis of West Ham United v Brentford.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s games click here, while the recap of Sunday’s four matches is available here.

WEST HAM UNITED 1-2 BRENTFORD

  • Goals: Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m) | Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m), Yoane Wissa (£5.9m)
  • Assists: Tomas Soucek (£5.9m) | Sergi Canos (£5.5m), Pontus Jansson (£4.6m)
  • Bonus: Soucek x3, Wissa x2, Mbeumo x1

MBEUMO ON TARGET

The ‘out of position’ Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) impressed again on Sunday, as the differential midfielder netted his second goal since Gameweek 5.

However, owners were perhaps unfortunate not to receive more than eight FPL points, as he missed a couple of early chances, including a strike which hit the bar.

Incredibly, it was the fourth time he has hit the woodwork this season (see below). For context, Harry Kane (£12.1m) led the way with eight across the entire 2020/21 campaign.

Mbeumo ended the match with four goal attempts, two shots in the box and 0.79 expected goals (xG), a total which comfortably trumped Ivan Toney’s (£6.3m) 0.08.

For the second Gameweek in a row, Yoane Wissa (£5.9m) arrived off the bench and grabbed a goal in the final stages of the game. The £8.5m summer signing from Lorient is still yet to start a Premier League match, but is certainly staking a claim for a place in Thomas Frank’s XI.

Elsewhere, Pontus Jansson (£4.6m) bagged his third assist of the season, and has now provided either an attacking return or clean sheet in six of his seven Premier League appearances.

With 12 points from five games, Brentford have had an excellent start to the season, and following their Gameweek 8 matchup against Chelsea, embark on a kind run which will surely see huge Fantasy interest in the likes of Mbeumo and Toney.

BEES INJURY LATEST

Kristoffer Ajer (£4.5m) was ruled out on Sunday with a hamstring injury, and as a result, will miss Norway’s forthcoming World Cup qualifiers during the international break. However, he is expected to be available for Gameweek 8.

Vitaly Janelt (£5.0m) picked up a minor thigh injury during the warm-up and dropped out, while Shandon Baptiste (£5.0m) was replaced on 29 minutes with a dislocated shoulder.

Discussing the disruptions caused by injury, Thomas Frank said:

“I think it’s an even bigger result, we all know we have the lowest budget [in the league]. I am very satisfied with my squad but of course, we don’t have maybe as much quality or as much experience especially, but players are just ready to step in, missing three key players today. The ones who stepped in – Zanka, Mathias and Frank – so very pleased with that and got that win in the end, which you know maybe a draw could have been a deserved one but we definitely, in even games, you can nick it in the end and we did that today. There were three other games earlier this season where we should have won but we didn’t, but so pleased with the mentality.”

BOWEN CONTINUES FINE FORM

A late Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m) goal means that the 24-year-old has now provided an attacking return in each of the last three Gameweeks. During that time, he has netted a goal, supplied two assists and outscored his more popular team-mate Said Benrahma (£6.6m) by 17 FPL points to 15.

Opening up the comparison across the opening seven Gameweeks reveals that Bowen has produced better underlying numbers in several key metrics, too, including shots in the box, big chances and expected goal involvement (xGI).

Jarrod Bowen v Said Benrahma key attacking statistics summary 2021/22

As for Michail Antonio (£8.0m), the highest-scoring forward in the game blanked for just the second time this season. However, owners will surely hold given his impressive start to the season, though the fixtures for West Ham aren’t straightforward:

Tomas Soucek (£5.9m) grabbed a rather fortunate assist, though manager David Moyes’ did suggest in his post-match interview that the Czech international is struggling to find his best form this season:

“Tomas has not quite got on the end of things as well and things have not fallen for him. He scored last week but it was chalked out at Leeds.

I think he is fighting for a wee bit of his best form. Is it to do with Declan getting forward a bit more? Well I am hoping the two of them, can get goals and gives us two goalscoring midfield players but I think Tomas has struggled a wee bit.”

West Ham XI: Fabianski, Coufal, Zouma, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Soucek, Rice, Bowen, Benrahma, Fornals, Antonio

Brentford XI: Raya, Zanka, Jansson, Pinnock, Canos, Baptiste (Jensen 29), Norgaard, Onyeka (Bidstrup 81), Henry, Mbeumo (Wissa 82), Toney

Looking for a Greenwood replacement, can go just with a FT or other option including a hit.

    1. FT

    A) Mount - Great fixtures for Chelsea, Tuchel believes Lukaku might be missing him, sounds a nice punt
    B) Everton mids - 3 home fixtures next 4 GWs, can see goals, Townsend my favorite stat wise
    C) Arsenal mids - would say that fixtures are better than Everton's, just can we trust Arsenal? Possibly toss a coin between Saka and ESR

    2. Taking a hit

    D) Greenwood Sarr/Benrahma out - Foden Arsenal/Everton mid in

    Thoughts?

Why not. good price, on form, fair fixtures and using the money in other areas. Also considering 1GW will not pay but in the long run they can be set and forget.

Look that's purely your way to approach the game and I respect that but I would just wait one more week instead of taking a hit. what I have seen so far from both the teams is not enough for me to take a hit to get those assets. It could change in the future of course.

I like Mount, but may be subject to rotation.

Townsend isn't as sexy a pick but he's certainly delivering right now. I may well be getting him in myself next Friday when I make my transfer.

Arsenal are still too inconsistent and unpredictable for my liking as far as their attacking players are concerned.

Is that Shaw hiding away second bench 🙂

Having my doubts about Chelsea defence over City currently. They're conceding (comparatively) stacks of chances and are only staying afloat in the cs market thanks to Mendy. Good time to bring in Cancelo or Dias no?

I'd go Cancelo even though I suspect he's due to miss one soon think he'll still outpace Dias.

Can't make my mind up about Arsenal attacking assets generally.

Looks to be great value there from Auba on down but for the fact they aren't scoring any goals! They're a bit like Wolves in that respect. I'm looking for alternatives.

Would you double up on Cancelo and Dias? The 'nailed' City points are clearly with these two.

          • 5 Years

I could end up going there

Regard Dias as an expensive 6 point merchant but he may end up being a smart move. A little way down the line for me but it's partially a question of whether I'd add him to 5.5 Rudiger in a power 4 or replace him as a more expensive version probably in a 3.

Current inclination is a City Chelsea Liverpool back line plus one cheapie who can slot in and out.

Should add that I had Dias for most of last season - got him very early. He was good value of course at 5.5 but from memory he only kept pace with or was just ahead of more attacking defenders in a similar price range. No VVD.

Seems highly unlikely to me - Tuchel was clear that he would be short of Thiago. Why would Raph be an exception especially when the key game is on the Thursday?

Best case scenario I can see is a cameo and actually have Raph benched right now.

I think so, you will have a much better idea after this GW who you want as a long-term Greenwood replacement and he may be benched vs Leicester. But getting Ramsdale in to free up funds isn't a bad idea, I would leave the bench as it is for now.

In simple terms, Facebook (who own WhatsApp & Instagram too) had apparently pushed out a release to all of their routers & in turn, that release caused said routers to lose connection to the internet, which in turn means it could not be fixed via another release.

A sort of "I've locked my keys on own car" affair.

It apparently took so long as they had to fix it internally on-site as opposed to being able to do it remotely.

Pool keep getting knocked out of the FA Cup early and haven't made the EFL cup final since 2016. So Pool doubles have been few and far between in recent seasons.

In fact the more I'm reading about this the more I think FFS needs to come out with a statement addressing all of the issues in the hackers statement on their own account.

If this hacker has an interest in FPL this place could be next.

Antonio scored in both games against City last season.

Had a slightly odd season altogether in that he scored all his goals against

      City x2

      Spurs
      West Brom x2

I would like to get in a CHE defender from GW9 so GW8 is a good chance to see whether Chillwell starts again. Possibly James in the mix.

Rudiger still the safest option but then I may as well keep Matip alongside TAA and Cancelo.

I went and got Alonso last week, which is probably going to end up the same way as it has wince I got Torres in after his last haul.

If healthy I'd go for James. Definite attacking returns will come from him, methinks.

I got in DCL (just before his injury) , Torres and Alonso all for a hit in the last 4 game weeks and still somehow has managed a 60k ranked.

Azpi is the best compromise choice I think

Got Rudi early and hit his goal but surely he won't get more than another couple this season. He is allergic to baps so really is 6 points and the very occasional splurge. Azpi does like baps and will get attacking. returns.

James is the option but you have to live with those cameos. Could pay. Alonso and Chilwell are possible if you have bench. But both I suspect will be beyond frustrating as they pop in and out. Can see them interchanging as I'm not sure Tuchel really rates either.

Ah interesting, I see Phil Foden is the latest Man City Flame attracting the FPL moths, following in the footsteps of notable luminaries:

      1. Mahrez (He has had a pre-season and Pep has to pick hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiim!!!)
      2. Torres (He's only 7.0 and playing as a striker for the best team in the woooooooooooooorrrrrlllddd!!!)
      3. Grealish (Pep picks him every game he is going to smaaaaaaasssssshhhh!!)
      4. Foden (He scored against Liverpool and is uuuuuuunnnnnnnnrrrreaeaaaaaaaaaaaallll!!!!)

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

And Hwang is very optimistic - who do you go to if & when he reverts to Austrain Bundesliga form?

I'd rather have that striker slot for the likes of DCL/Bamford/Jimmy/Wilson and use the midfield slot for the likes of Sarr/Saka/ESR/Benrahma/Gallagher/Townsend/Gray/Doucoure/Soucek/Harrison/JWP etc

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years

And I wou;dn't be dying about Mendy at 6.0 when you can get plenty of points for 4.5 from Ramsdale, Raya, Guiata etc

Then you can change Dias to Rudi or Azpi and diversify a bit

It's really FPL by numbers other than that and hard to pick holes in as a result
