Should FPL managers buy Southampton players ahead of Gameweek 8?

After seven rounds of Premier League action, Southampton remain winless and sit just above the relegation zone with four points.

However, there have been encouraging performances against Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, while it’s also worth noting that they have played four of the division’s current top five.

Now, with fixtures easing, what comes next for Saints will be crucial, but for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, are their players worth investing in ahead of Gameweek 8, and if so, who?

In this, our latest Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members article, we’ll attempt to answer those questions.

THE OUTLOOK

Firstly, Southampton will be without their captain James Ward-Prowse (£6.4m) for the next two Premier League fixtures, with the midfielder having been sent off at Stamford Bridge last weekend. The third match of his suspension conveniently arrives in the Carabao Cup fourth round, which means that he should be back for Watford (a) in Gameweek 10.

The expectation amongst supporters is that Ibrahima Diallo (£4.5m) will step in, having impressed at Chelsea. In fact, it was his pass that found Tino Livramento (£4.2m) who then won their second-half penalty.

“Ibra is a fantastic player, I must say that. He should really play more games.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

However, it’s the return of Stuart Armstrong (£5.8m) which could be key to unlocking Southampton’s attacking potential. The Scottish international has been sidelined with a calf injury, but is expected to make his first start of the season in Gameweek 8.

The fact that Saints have not won a Premier League match without him in the side since December 2019 highlights his importance to the group, something Ward-Prowse touched on in a recent interview:

“His quality going forwards and the way that he can shift from a slow pace dribble to fast pace really worries defenders and gives us a new dimension – and variety. This will be really important for us now.

He’s an incredibly important player for us, with his quality on the ball. His decision-making in the final third is incredibly important. He gives us a really good balance in the team. We have a lot of competition for places in that area but I am sure that he will come back in and have a really positive impact.”

Armstrong is the Saints’ best ball carrier, who has the ability to drive forward and link play between midfield and attack. He will enable his team to play through the lines with more structure and could add the spark that gets the strikers firing.

Going forward, Southampton have struggled in the opening weeks, scoring just three goals from open-play, plus two Ward-Prowse penalties.

However, fixtures have of course played their part (see below), and the underlying numbers do suggest that they have perhaps been a little unfortunate not to score more.

Southampton’s Gameweek 1 to 7 fixtures

Make the rubbish teams do pre qualifying. They can do that whilst finals are on because they're never in them.

With only 10 more Ballon D’Ors scheduled to be handed out by the time Foden is 32 I’m not sure that’s a realistic goal

He can keep making shortlists, as he has done this year… but winning it… would need to make a colossal step up in consistency from where he is now and hope no one else in Europe does similar

I mean, it’s also completely typical of FFS that an assist against Andorra triggers a Balon D’Or award

Someone on here was giving it to Salah the other day despite him being AWOL for January through March, and most of April & May…

It’s amazing what goals against Norwich, Leeds, Brentford & Palace can do

              • 12 Years

I never he said he should be awarded a Ballon d'Or. Nor have I judged him based on one game against firemen, taxi drivers and pizza delivery guys. You make a lot of assumptions.

Please read my actual words, instead packing it with straw.

I didn’t say you said he should be awarded the Ballon D’Or - read my first response

I said I doubted the notion that he would get one in the next 10 years without a massive step up in consistency from where he was

My second response was obviously tongue-in-cheek, no one is giving him a Balon D’Or for a game against Andorra.

Some people are however, putting him in the frame for a Balon D’Or immediately after an assist vs. Andorra

12 players risen, 28 players fallen in price so far this international break & we're only halfway. All by £0.1 so far.
I've seen mixed views on the number of price fluctuations that occurs over the IB if there's value in playing the WC over this period from a team value perspective.
I wondered how this compares to both other GWs & previous IBs?
Anyone have any data on this by any chance please? Anyone on Twitter track this sort of thing? Has there been articles on here showing weekly totals of players price fluctuations? Thanks in advance if so.

Well this is my 15th year playing and the IB is always the slowest as everyone switches off. Look at this site for example. They’re down to 30 comments an hour.

Thanks for reply Rupert. So the price rises are slower than in normal GWs.
I didn't check daily so I'm not sure when these occurred, but I could check Ragabollys post to see.

What about the total number of players who prices fluctuates? (More or less than normal?)

I "thought", (I may well be wrong) that in some previous GWs this season less than 12 players prices have risen.

Considering we're only halfway through I'd imagine more transfers will be made closer to the deadline so more price fluctuations will occur.

A lot lot less fluctuation. Another reason is that wild carding in the international break is extremely popular. Wild card transfers do not affect price changes.
        It’s honestly very slow

There are more days so more opportunities for rises, however its not like anyone has extra free transfers so unless everyone goes hit crazy the overall number of transfers shouldn't be much higher. Plus lots like to take a WC during IB and those transfers don't have the same effect....so probs not much different to usual week, but in slo mo!

Exactly. You could hypothesise that if more players take WC during IB, that actually diminishes price rises compared to regular weeks.

    3. Carefree Crew
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

Thanks again Rupert & Mox81. I just looked at Ragabollys price changes posts for the week & in case you're interested:

Saturday: 1 rise, 0 fall (today)
      Friday: 0 rise, 1 fall
      Thursday: 1 rise, 1 fall
      Wednesday: 2 rises, 4 fell
      Tuesday: 3 rises, 5 fell
      Monday: 3 rises, 9 fell

Why do people actually press the wildcard button so early, why wouldn't they wait until the day of the deadline? (Night before if based abroad not on GMT)

Make all the transfers as early as possible to catch price fluctuations yes obviously, but by waiting to actually press the wildcard button, then the transfers will count towards price changes over the course of the week or two weeks if it's an IB & force others who maybe priced out to go early without the security of the wildcard if injuries occur or miss out on preferred targets by being priced out.
I'm assuming then their transfers will be recalibrated so higher risks will be required for future price changes, but the damage is then done for that GW.

Any early wildcard pressers care to enlighten me? Am I missing something?

Ha! Ha! Thanks Andy, but yeah I know the wildcard is unlimited transfers, maybe I haven't explained myself clearly in the above post or maybe you didn't read it properly mate. Maybe read it again.

My point is referring to influencing price changes. Transfers made after pressing the wildcard button don't count towards price changes.

Normal transfers do. So by just making numerous transfers, so each additional transfer "temporarily" are minus 4 points, however on the day of the deadline, so after 02:30am but before the time of the deadline 11am, then press the wildcard button, the minus points are cancelled by the wildcard but the multiple transfers that have been made over the course of the week would have already counted towards price changes.

      Does that make sense?

Most people don't know how price changes work and there is the risk of forgetting to push the WC before deadline by leaving it late.

I'll try again for you to read when you're less tired & you can read this when you get up.

Let's say I want to play my WC in GW 9.

After the game updates AFTER the GW 8 deadline on Saturday around midday, I make 4 transfers straight away but DON'T press the wildcard button. Assuming I've only got 1 free transfer, it will display that 3 of those transfers will cost me minus 12 points
      ( 4 points X 3 = minus 12 points)
I monitor potential price changes & on Sunday I make another 3 transfers for an additional minus 12 points.
Monday I make another 2 transfers for an additional minus 8 points.
Tuesday I make another 2 transfers for an additional minus 8 points.

So in total I've made 10 additional transfers to my 1 free transfer at a cost of minus 40 points. All of my transfers will count towards price fluctuations as I haven't pressed the wildcard button.

I wait until the AM of the deadline which is at 11am Saturday. I press the wildcard button at 9am Saturday BEFORE the deadline at 11am. This cancels the minus 40 points but again, all of my transfers have already counted towards price changes.

The benefit is that other managers who aren't playing their wildcard in this GW, will either be forced into making early transfers or paying more for the same player if they wait & he goes up in price (without the security of having their wildcard active to change any transfers made for free, should the player transferred in get injured for example, or waiting for the pressers for maximum information)

      Does that make sense?

So my question is, what is the benefit in pressing the wildcard button straight away? Why wouldn't you wait until the day of the deadline (6 days later) so that all the transfers made count towards price changes?

No benefit of pressing it straight away under normal circumstances, but leaving it to the final day could be disastrous if the unexpected happens like being taken ill or a power cut. The latter would leave me without internet access of any type as I use Wifi calling on my phone.

Thanks Ryan, I thought of the risk of forgetting, but surely that just applies to "casuals"?

If you were going out for beers on Friday night & thought there was a risk then by all means press the WC button on Friday, but surely not straight away after the deadline 5 days prior.

I'm assuming the people that come on here aren't casuals & understand that wildcard transfers don't count towards price changes, I've seen it posted a hundred times.

It's frustrating that people make early transfers & I'm in the position most weeks of having to either make early transfers or pay the extra £0.1 if I wait until after all the pressers on Friday. It's only when playing the wildcard I have the flexibility to make early transfers to beat price changes & know it's not a problem with the wildcard active there's no risk. Why shoot yourself in the foot by & press the button early so the transfers don't count towards price changes & removing that advantage. I don't get it.

The Horse knows & gets it. 🙂

People do forget, and not just casuals. Transfers needed to trigger a price change are usually in the thousands, so what gain you get is really not worth even the miniscule risk.

With over 8 million players, all with a wildcard to play in the first 19 GWs is on average over 421,000 wildcards a week.

There are some weeks that are more popular, due to fixtures swings, multiple player injuries who are highly owned, over the international break etc.

With certain obvious targets, eg Cancelo this week, Chelsea DF last week etc I wouldn't be surprised if close to one million wildcards could be played in a single GW. (I'm speculating don't know this for a fact.) That's non inclusive of the other 7 million + managers.

So the "in the thousands" of transfers required to influence a price change are very clearly very easily achievable.

The Delta is shown on FPL statistics for example Mbuemo is currently on 90%, his delta is 8,326 more transfers to achieve a rise. Jesus is on 75% his delta is 21,069.

These are relatively very small numbers in comparison with the number of players playing the game.

Admittedly I've heard there will be a number of different teams

Okay, woke up here in Cambodia. Read the last explanation. Right, I get your point. My view is as Torresmagic says above - and why should anyone care, at the risk of a mishap that ruins your whole season? If you're in England, it's like being the only driver not to rush to the pumps to prevent panic-buying shortages. Everyone else will panic-buy anyway and you'll be left with nothing.

Andy Social: Good afternoon from England, just logged in & seen your reply. Re Torres Magic comment of "A lot of effort for no change in result." In what way is pressing the wildcard button on deadline day a lot of effort? It takes about 1 minute!

I wonder how much time you & him spend on here in comparison?

As for no result, with over 8 million managers having a free transfer every week, an average of over 421,000 wildcards played weekly & only a total of 500 players to choose from (20 teams X 25 man squad) which is reduced significantly by attractive options, fixtures, form, value, think about the "Template".
There's realistically a small number of good options in each position on a weekly basis.
Even if we said for arguments sake 10 GKs, 15 DFs, 15 MFs, 10 FWs = 50 player targets.
If playing the WC logically you're going to make multiple transfers not just 2 or 3.

So "excluding" the other 7.6+ million who aren't playing their free transfer, wildcarders alone would making an average of only 4 transfers each equates to over 1.6 million transfers targeting a candidate pool of only 50 players. (Average of 32,000 per player, but it won't be an even split, the top 10 targets will likely equate to the majority of those 1.6mil & influence price changes)

Then factor in let's say only half of the 7.6million players make their free transfer that's another 3.8 million (Average of 76,000 transfer per player, again that's a equal split, in reality the top 10 will have much higher.)

If you can't see how by delaying pressing the wildcard button on early transfers, would highly likely influence price changes, I'm sorry but I don't think I can explain it any clearer than I have.

If it's not you for you, no problem at all. I respectfully disagree with both you & TM's opinions on this.

Interesting that Rupert the horse does this with his WC & I doubt very much him & I are the only ones that do. I find it surprising that the majority of people on here who are well aware that wildcard transfers don't affect price changes & know pressing the WC button cancels out any minus points for additional transfers made that GW don't do it.

It's an observation on my part & mentioned because I've learned plenty from this site, fans of other teams knowledge of players, strategey etc so I thought I'd share.

Perhaps it's something that others could use, that if like me are frustrated by early price rises, it's an opportunity to get our own back on all those early transfer makers! 🙂

Good luck to you anyway Andy & Torres Magic. No hard feelings lads. We've all got our own opinions & it would be a boring if we thought exactly the same & played the same way. 🙂

        Hey, hi again!
"If you can't see how by delaying pressing the wildcard button on early transfers, would highly likely influence price changes, I'm sorry but I don't think I can explain it any clearer than I have."
I get that, I really do. I'm a pragmatist at heart, and my point is that while you, Rupert and a tiny handful of others might play it that way, the fact is you're in a tiny minority. You might wish others did as you do, but if you challenged most players, they'd ask 'Why? What benefit is it to me?' Your argument is that it benefits others who want to make individual transfers, but it doesn't benefit the wildcarder. Like the Prisoners' Dilemma, if everyone doesn't do it, it's pointless. And as mentioned, there's a real risk of disaster. Where I live, we get power-cuts and wifi fails multiple times a week. Last season, I lost 30 points when my intended bench boost was wrecked in that way. 'Just in time' economics applied to fpl is a no-no for me.

Hi again Andy! Thanks for your swift reply mate.

" 'Why? What benefit is it to me?' Your argument is that it benefits others who want to make individual transfers, but it doesn't benefit the wildcarder."

Have you accidentally got this the wrong way around? Should I swap "others who want to make individual transfers" with "wildcarder" Or have I misunderstood. (Quite possible!)

The benefit to playing your wildcard in this way is either financially / team value in comparison with other managers if they wait to put the same player in they'll have to pay an additional £0.1mil for the same player, or by forcing them to make very early transfers to save that £0.1m on the purchase price when potentially that player hasn't even played this week if the price rises on Saturday night & their game is on Sunday / Monday or mid week fixture EU / cup.
Additionally, without the maximum information after pressers & running the risk of other players in their team getting injured over the course of the week where they'd wished with hindsight they'd of made a different transfer. Remember the numbers above 421,000 weekly wildcarders, still leaves another 7.6mil with a free transfer that will influence price changes & all the annoying early transfer makers!

I actually "don't" wish others take this approach as it would obviously affect me in 18 /19 GWs that I haven't got a wildcard to play, so it's not a case of me wishing others did, but like I said it's the FFS community where we all share information & it's incredibly rare I can give something back in comparison with highly successful managers that are miles better than me!

I totally understand your personal circumstances with internet access, I was studying Muay Thai in Thailand years ago & my 6 month visa meant I had to leave the country every 2 months & I spent a few weeks in Cambodia. I think I left from Traat in SW Thailand went up the Mekong, stopped at Sianookville ( please excuse spelling) Phenon Phen (S21 & killing Fields) & Siam Reap to see the temple's of Angkor & fire grenade launchers & AK 47 & M16s. (Not at the temple's!) Driving through the jungle on 250cc motorbikes without a helmet making sure we stayed on the road with the risk of the mines. Beautiful country, lovely people.
With winter approaching over here I'm a bit envious of you.
But wishing you well mate. 🙂

Cheers, Cambodia has developed quite a bit since those days, but development means too many people needing electricity and not enough to go round!
Anyway, I still maintain that as only a few dozen people would likely follow your policy of making their transfers and pressing the wildcard button on the last day, it would have a negligible effect on price changes. On the other hand, so long as it doesn't go wrong, it can't do any harm either.
Anyway, good luck with your season.

1 person is 0.00001% of the total players.

Thats the point that makes this all fairly futile. It barely affects the individual, whereas forgetting affects the individual completely.

I completely understand the desire for others to do it as it outsources the risk, for the individual I cannot see how risk vs reward stacks up
