FPL Hall of Fame: Tips and strategy from seven-time top 10k finisher Yavuz Kabuk

We hear from the consistently brilliant Yavuz Kabuk as we continue to champion those in our Hall of Fame roll of honour.

Here at Fantasy Football Scout, we are acknowledging the best of the best when it comes to Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

And so, every year, we will salute the top five managers in our prestigious Career Hall of Fame.

The managers who can break into the top five will be immortalised on our Hall of Fame page.

You can check your own position in the Hall of Fame by becoming a Fantasy Football Scout Member and joining either of our two FPL mini-leagues.

Our Live Hall of Fame, which is updated throughout the season, had its first refresh for 2021/22 over the September international break and you’ll be able to see all the correct new IDs attached to the managers in question.

Having previously heard from Hall of Fame number one Fábio Borges, nine-time top 10k finisher Finn Sollie and the consistently excellent Morten Tveito, up next is Dutch maestro Yavuz.

He has seven consecutive top 10k finishes, finishing 123rd in the world for the 2020/21 season.

Hall of Fame Career #1-#5 15
HOW DO YOU GENERALLY APPROACH FPL? WHAT IS YOUR MAIN STRATEGY/STYLE?

I usually divide the season into three parts and approach each one in different ways.

The first part of the season is the most chaotic one. I always start with proven names, except for one or two, but play more aggressively afterwards. In this period, I tend to make early transfers, take hits and jump onto bandwagons (even if I don’t believe in the player) to build some team value for the rest of the season.

I try to watch more games in this period and take some risks to find the next bandwagon earlier than anyone. I rely on the eye test a little bit more than stats here, due to there not being enough fresh data (at least in the first couple of Gameweeks). Although there is no clear line, part one usually ends with the second international break. In general, I am not successful in the first part of the season and rarely find myself in the top 100k.

I don’t have a clear strategy for the first Wildcard. If my team is far from ideal, I pull the trigger for it straight away (last season it was Gameweek 4). If I am a couple of hits away from it, I would just do those instead. At this time, I do not care about overall rank but rather the shape of the team.

The second part is the most important one for me and usually when I climb the rankings. It starts around the second international break and ends with the second Wildcard, or a bit earlier depending on Blank and Double Gameweeks. The template settles around now and I switch my style to ‘swords and shields’ (I like this analogy a lot). This requires extensive forward planning, especially in a season like the last one. I try not to take hits in this period and play it safe with very few differentials. In this period, my decisions are almost exclusively based on stats and I do care about effective ownership a lot.

My strategy for part three depends on where I am ranked. If I am still outside of the top 10k, I continue to play ‘swords and shields’. If I am inside the top 10k, I try to get into the top 5k and then top 1k by playing a bit more aggressively. I would be willing to take calculated risks either by having differential players or captains, or by using chips differently than the rest of the pack.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST FPL MOMENT?

It has to be the 52-pointer by captain Theo Walcott in the 2012/13 season; almost everyone else went for Robin van Persie’s late cameo and assist and that Gameweek threw me into the top 1k for the first time and made me believe I can finish there. An honourable mention would go to Gareth Bale’s 21-pointer last year. I was almost sure he would explode so I used my Wildcard that week to accommodate him in my team.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR SECURING A GOOD FINISH?

Each season has its own dynamics. My top tip would be to observe the first part of the season very carefully and not stick with any predefined strategy. Adapting your approach is the most important thing for me in FPL.

WHAT STATS DO YOU PAY MOST ATTENTION TO? WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TOOL IN THE PREMIUM MEMBERS AREA?

My favourite is the Comparison Tool; I use both versions for players and teams. I also check Match Data and the Season Ticker quite frequently.

For the majority of the time as a Scout member, Big Numbers has been my favourite article. I pay the most attention to expected stats (per start), both for attackers and defenders, but I also care about more traditional stats like shots, key passes, etc. I try not to use data older than four to six Gameweeks.

No Chelsea other than Lukaku for their next run of games is unadvised imo. Those fixtures are too good to ignore.

I'd rather go Rudiger + Chilwell over TAA + Tomiyasu regardless of TAA's fitness for a few weeks while Chelsea are playing all the relegation candidates.

I often end up with triples from a budget team. Had 3 Seagulls until I off-loaded the alleged sex offender. The thing about triples from sides like these are they're benchable.
Lemme guess - Livramento, McCarthy, Armstrong. Budget keeper with good run of fixtures, 2 outfielders who get benched for tricky fixtures. All good!

Yeah, those are the exact three I have. Your post fills me with confidence going this route, though I'd still loved to have Foster instead of McCarthy if I was certain he's now first choice ahead of Bachhmann.

The problem with having borh Livra and Armstrong is that when you need your bench you are reliant on Southampton having a good game. Its a good idea to have diversity on the bench. Triple ups are for regular players in your team.

Yep have Livra and Armstrong and the fixtures are there for the next month.

              Jump to whom?

Is a transfer on a cheap forward ever worth more than other players in the team? Do you really want to lock that in?

                Livra going nowhere.
Brought in Armstrong on gw5 wildcard for this run post Chelsea. Might have some spare cash soon if I do Jota to Raph. Would probably go Toney

Armstrong to Toney is an easy transfer at some stage over the next 5 or 6 weeks.

Presumably you do have Foster as 2nd keeper, right?
But my main point is that I reject outright the very idea of 'coverage'. If you think two or three players from one team are the best picks for your squad, just go ahead and get them. I'll never understand why people reject the best options just because they've got another player from the same team.

            Irs the what ifs

If I have triple Chelsea defence and they do well then its great. If they do badly I will transfer out.

If I have triple saints defence and they do well its good, (but not sensational as few attacking points). If they do badly I will still prioritise transfers for more expensive players and be stuck with them as dead weight for a while.

That to me is relevant here. The idea of Southampton conceding regularly does not seem farfetched to me and there is no easy way to deal with it.

            1. Andy_Social

Depends on the whole set-up. Re. my Seagulls, Sanchez is the budget keeper that you don't expect much from. GW9 he runs into Top 4 sides at which point I get Ramsdale or Raya. No 4.5 is a season-keeper. Duffy was supposed to be on my bench most weeks but he's been an unexpected bonus. No harm if he does sit on the bench most weeks though. And the third was my 4.5 non-usable benchie, Bissouma. I have no problem using the cheap guys as part of 2FTs or a 1Ft if my big players are stable.

With Saints, I do have Livra who's turning out to be a season-keeping bonus. If I had McCarthy it would be to catch a run of fixtures only. Same with Armstrong - in for the good games, out when the run terminates. A price-point where you can easily bench him in the odd nasty fixture and dump him for the likes of Toney in a 2FT package.

Give or take 10 games. It’s more about how they rotate with other players eg do you need to play them often or will you have constant benching headaches

For 4.5 defenders and goalkeepers, and fodder elsewhere, I completely agree. They are expected to stay until the next wildcard, even if it's October and the next wildcard will be in March/April.

For 6-6.5 mids and forwards, I'm a bit more flexible. I don't plan their transfer out in advance, but I know based on some data I collected last season that my revealed preference is to hold them for about 7 weeks on average. They can stay longer if they are outperforming what you'd expect for someone at their price (e.g. Bamford last season). I'm not likely to bring them in for just like a 3-week run of fixtures unless I know I'll be wildcarding at the end of that run.

Yes, I just updated the data through to the end of the season. For forwards it was an average spell of 7.1 weeks in my team, 7.2 excluding premium forwards (Kane was the only one I ever owned). For mids it was a bit less at 6.1 weeks overall and 5.7 excluding premium mids (Salah, Auba, KDB, Bruno, Son, Bale).

For defenders it was a surprisingly low 6.8 weeks. That said, defenders are often used as makeweights in double or triple moves for attackers, and there were a lot of DGW's encouraging me to do stuff that would have made no sense otherwise, like Vestergaard -> Keane (DGW of WBA+SOU) for a -4.

I remember my best, or at least most memorable FPL moment.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/38779235

    Everton 6 - 3 Bournemouth

Lukaku (C) scored 4 goals whilst King also scored twice.

Kane had Middlesbrough at home that week (only scored 1 goal in a 1-0 win) so Lukaku I don't think was even the most popular captain choice. I know people in my league didn't captain him.

Have had huge hauls from Kane (TC), Salah vs. Watford etc before but those were popular choices.

One of my best fpl moments also includes King, in that blank gameweek in which he scored hattrick after his penalty miss, i had him captained too, had 8 players where most had like 3 or 4, because it was termed enough, i had Shaqiri for a goal and double Everton deg, think my gw rank were around 300.
The most funny and to an extent lesson wised it was part of a rise from almost 3 million rank in gw23, in which i played my wc and decided to just go crazy and was giving up territory, to a climb that ended up around 20k.

yes, I was referring to the severity of both injuries which sound a bit like I'd prefer to rest and be ready to play for my club...etc. May be wrong and a bit cynical of me

Thoughts on my squad? 0.6 ITB. Thinking of getting TAA back down the line by downgrading Antonio to someone like Hwang and upgrading Christensen or Matip

    Sanchez Ward
    Rudi Matip Christensen Livra Duffy
    Salah Raphinha Gray Sarr Mbuemo
    Lukaku Ronaldo Antonio

I'm thinking Livramento, and bench Sarr, Mbuemo and Raphinha (if he can't play). What do you think? I'm aware this time can create benching headaches but it also limits hits (having lots of options)

I think it’s strong. As I’m on wold card I might sell Raphinha , but I’m not 100%. Could get annoying if I have him along with Lukaku and Rudiger injury doubts.

Think depth is good but maybe you’ve gone a little too far. Would downgrade Sarr to a 4.5 myself.

I don’t trust Christensen to play enough - would rather Laporte which you can afford too.

Looks like Kabuk and I have similar strategy or approach to the game. I took hits GW2-4 to build TV and jump on wagons like Benrahma, Duffy, Livra and also get Gray and sarr ahead of the curve.

Now I am very careful with my fTs and have a plan on how to use it until I WC in 15 or 19. Hopefully everything will go according to the plan.

295k. I started well at 79k gw1, but only got 1 green arrow due to the hits taken and ditching some solid picks like White and Greenwood as I play the TV game early on. Still believe I can turn the corner especially when many have wasted the WC 🙂

Yes. It will be interesting to see if DCL's fantasy output is impacted by the raft of midfielders that have been stepping up in his absence. I suspect not.

    Ramsdale
    Cresswell - Christensen - Rudiger - Cancelo
    Salah - Raphinha - Saka
    Vardy - Lukaku - Antonio

    1FT here, which one?

    a) Saka -> Foden
    b) Raph -> Foden if he's out
    c) Cresswell -> TAA if fit
    d) roll

If TAA is out, should I do A and wait to bring him back in, or just roll?

    1. RogDog_jimmy
      • 3 Years

Hard to know without seeing your bench cover for Raph.

Assuming it’s someone who will play/give you 2 pts I wouldn’t move him.

Saka > Foden seems fun but could just be swapping out a starting player for a benched player - no idea what Pep is thinking.

I’d do either TAA move or nothing - misfiled one seems too hard to predict to me.

Maybe that’s enough to punt on Foden then - seems the most fun option to me. I’d move Saka on for him. If Raph and Foden don’t play Liv and Luiz isn’t the worst.

Best option in this blue wc draft between:
    A) Torres - Werner
    B) Mount - Jesus

    Ederson
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell
    Salah Raphinha Mbeumo __
    Lukaku Armstrong __

    Bench: Forster, Duffy, Livramento, Luiz

If you're only going to play 3 defenders consider a 3.9 fodder, like Obamidele and use the 1.1m to strengthen your 11.

I’m pretty set on this WC but it only has Livramento so far as a bench so need at least one other nailed bench player. As I’m not sure how long Duffy will be nailed I’ll probably opt for White.

            Ramsdale (Foster)
            TAA Rüdiger Cancelo (Livramento ???)
            Salah Son Raphinha Mbuemo Doucoure
