How checklists can help you make better FPL decisions: Part 2

Ex-FPL winner Simon March: How to avoid getting carried away with your GW1 picks

In my previous article, we discussed how checklists have dramatically improved outcomes in areas as diverse as air travel safety and reducing hospital infections and considered how they might also improve decision-making when it comes to Fantasy Premier League (FPL). In particular, I suggested that they might help compensate for our imperfect memories, mitigate our tendency towards overconfidence and help control our impulses.

This week, I’ll be expanding on the topic to address the question of what makes a good decision checklist, how best to use one and, finally, I’ll share the checklist that I’ll be using this season to help steer my transfer decisions.

And, no, I don’t have anything better to do. Nor do you. So let’s begin.

What Makes a Good Decision Checklist

What will make a good checklist will vary depending on the context. If you’re dealing with something particularly complex, such as a shuttle launch, the checklist might necessarily be quite long.

A good decision checklist, however, will always be as short as possible and only feature important items. The longer a checklist is, the longer it will take to complete and the more likely it will not be used or not be used properly.

Focusing only on what is most important is also vital as this allows you to afford your time to areas where it will be most significantly spent. In addition, if a checklist has too many items, it might go too far in narrowing the options available.

In summary, a good decision checklist is detailed enough to be useful, but judicious with its items, allowing it to be completed easily and be efficient in its scope.

How to Use a Checklist

Now that we’ve established that bigger is not necessarily better when it comes to checklists, we should also acknowledge that it’s how you use them that really counts.

The point of a decision checklist is that it introduces consistency and rigour to the decision process and, as a result, it helps control some of the more negative effects of our cognitive biases. The value of checklists, however, is not necessarily measured by how rigidly or dogmatically their items are followed.

Context is always important and each item should always be considered in relation to where you are in your FPL season at that particular moment. For example, your checklist items might effectively rule out a particular player but, perhaps, this player has a double gameweek or maybe you are about to Wildcard after this Gameweek, meaning you only need the player for one week as a punt.

These and other factors can influence whether the items of your checklist are appropriate for that moment and, while it is important to take them relatively seriously if you want them to work, they are there to guide your decisions, not to dictate them.

Finally, a checklist does not need to be written in stone but, ideally, should evolve and be perfected over time. If it needs additional items, or items to be removed to be effective, go ahead and add or subtract them.

My Transfer Decision Checklist

Because I like to ‘eat my own dog food’ (not literally) I’ve drafted a checklist that I’ll be running all my transfer decisions past this season. Generally, I’m using this after I’ve identified a player I might want as a means of either deciding between multiple options or as a final sense-check before I push the transfer button.

Currently, I use a traffic light system marking each item as Green = Good, Yellow = Caution, Red = Bad based on how well the player fits that particular item. If my checklist is all or mostly green, I’ll go ahead with the transfer. If it’s significantly yellow or red, I’ll either look at other options or any contextual factors that might mitigate them.

Here’s the checklist:

  1. Are they nailed on?
  2. Are their next six fixtures favourable?
  3. If I had to, would I be happy to hold them for the whole season?
  4. Do they negatively impact my team’s flexibility?
  5. Do they play for a good team?
  6. Are they heavily involved for their team (e.g. the ‘talisman’ and/or on set pieces)?
  7. Do they actually improve my team over the player I’m transferring out?
  8. Are there bigger issues to solve first?
  9. Can I make this transfer later in the week?
  10. Could I bank this transfer instead?

Now, I stress, this checklist is not an exhaustive list of the factors I look at when picking a player, I still look at underlying statistics, eye test and all the other things we might use when making decisions and these could, indeed, be checklist items themselves. For me, however, my checklist reflects the principles which, when I stick to them, tend to correlate with me doing better in FPL. Ideally your own checklist will be similarly tailored based on your own experiences.

The added benefit of personalising your decision checklist is that, if it really doesn’t work, you will at least have empirical evidence that your preferred strategy might not be ideal. That doesn’t sound like much of a consolation but, in the long run, it could be an extremely valuable insight, and one that you can only gain through consistency in your style of play.

Finally, checklists need not only be for transfer decisions. They might be used for captaincy decision criteria or deciding when to Wildcard or to play other chips or all sorts of FPL-related decisions you might want to introduce more accountability for.

Summary

A good decision checklist is short but substantial. Too long, and they may be overly restrictive and will probably put you off investing your time in completing them. But, they should include the items that you consider important to your decision process.

Good use of a checklist does not necessarily require dogmatic adherence to its items and the current context will always be important to consider. Checklists are there to make you stop and think and their true value comes from the consistency with which they are used.

Finally, the best checklists will reflect your own experience of the game and the challenges you have faced. We all have our individual strengths and weaknesses and decision checklists not only give us cause to consider what those might be, but they also give us a means of taking account and consistently addressing them whenever we make an FPL decision.

Yeah, and the value of the squad Ole inherited too. They've spent over a billion since Ferguson left. Being two points off the top at this stage isn't some huge achievement.

Cannot compare OGS to Arteta. OGS has had far more management experience than Arteta by managing in Norway and Cardiff. This is Artetas first management job, he hasn't even managed a reserve team!

      Ogs is ultimate glazer manager.

Why would they sack him? Its his dream job, and will never kick up a fuss, so essentially a yes man.

Nice buffer between the glazers and the fans as well.

And he should still manage top 4( nevermind its probably deepest squad after city) which at the end of the day is all glazers want. They aren't concerned with title challenges.

Ogs is going no where, for a long time.

The Glazers don't care about winning titles, they only care about money. United will never win anything big with yes man and glorified PE teacher Ole at the helm, and that is just fine with the Glazers, as long as the money keeps coming.

I have to laugh at this. Not an Arsenal or Man U fan (or any PL league team).
But what you are saying has echoes of what used to be said about Arsene Wenger a much more successful manager granted - but the football landscape is different now
. I will quote what Bercow then in response to Wenger out - 'Be careful what you wish for

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SdUJmRj9AU

Also Man United has three other managers since Ferguson.
Moyes (it was too soon for him) - no league win
Van Gaal (a top class manager) - no league win
Mourinho (top class manager) - no league win

Plus Mourinho intimated during his time at Man United that a big rebuilding job was needed at Man United.
That is OGS remit a long term strategy developing youth etc and setting it up for the future. Plus the Glazers know most Man United fans will give OGS time to do so.

You're basically saying the same thing I was, which is the Glazers are just happy with incremental progress and a manager who doesn't rock the boat - winning trophies is not required. OGS wouldn't have gotten any other Epl team's manager job with his cv. United's squad is now about on a par with the other big clubs, but their manager is clearly the weak link.

So who do you pick of the 3 Everton cheap mids?

Doucoure - most likely to play 90, given freedom to roam, 17/18 + 18/19 played a similar role for Watford and got 3.8 and 3.5 PPG respectively. Now playing in a better side.

Townsend - on most set pieces, the biggest goal threat of the 3 so far, but concern over minutes, especially once Richarlison and DCL are back.

Gray - passed the eye test with flying colours, but attacking threat is pretty poor in comparison, being forced to create his own chances to have shots on goal.

I landed on Dacoure a few gameweeks back for the very reasons you outlined. Sort of like a Lampard/Gerard 2.0 plus is involved in assists. The safest and most consistent source of points out of the three IMO. Everton do have a difficult run coming up around gw11-15. I am thinking about shipping him out by then,

I think the fact that there are FPL players that consistently finish in the top 10k over many years proves that there is a skill to it.

It’s a refreshing article on decision making processes.

I don't take it that seriously but I can see the benefits there. In Ireland we might call that 'knocking the craic out of it' but respect to anyone who can get to that level.

It doesn't. It proves that if you play strictly to make a top 10k or top 20k finish you can do it fairly often. It will even be recognised in the FFS HOF. But to do that you will sacrifice the idea of true excellence, of playing to win, of trying to be better at the game than anyone else.

It's like Tim Henman. He made 6 Grand Slam semi-finals and 10 quarter-finals, all in a 9-year period from 1996 to 2004. But he never won one, never reached a final and was realistically never close to winning a Major. Being a losing semi-finalist looks close but it isn't really. He just wasn't good enough.

Now, the way the HOF works, that would be highly rated indeed. It's like the guy Yavuz Kabuk that was interviewed recently, with talk of his 7 top 10k finishes and his "consistent brilliance" as it is described. But when you read his comments it becomes apparent that he has developed a strategy that is entirely aimed at a top 10k finish. He's not aiming to win; he's not trying to win. He's not trying to excel. He is aiming to play the percentage game in a steady way to gain a steady result.

Now, that is fine, lots of people would have no higher aim and Mr. Kabuk doubtless does it very well. But to laud such achievements is to accept that the pinnacle is beyond reach and that you are better not to aim for it, lest in reaching too high you slip and fall below the consistent 10k approach he exemplifies.

Nothing truly worthwhile was ever achieved in that way.

the issue with Foden/Mount is benchings and then sub appearances, they drag down the players' PPG too much for my liking. Take Foden for example last season, 12 appearances of his 28 he played less than 60 minutes, that's painful. 10 times as an unused sub.

Mount should see more gametime, but with Werner's return to form, that leaves 1 spot for Havertz/Ziyech/Pulisic/Mount and that's if Tuchel only wants to play 2 of Kova/Jorg/Kante/Saul/RLC/Barkley etc. Just puts me off owning either of Mount/Foden

Do we think Lukaku will be rested for Brentford and Malmo?

He could do with the rest even if it's for a few days before Brentford game. Did he have much preseason break at all?

Tweaked my WC a bit. Thoughts?

    Ramsdale - Foster
    TAA - Cancelo - Rudiger - Duffy - Livramento
    Salah - Son - Foden - Raphinha - Brownhill
    Lukaku - Armstrong - Hwang

May get Torres/Trossard for just gw 8 and then move to Raphinha

Looks ok just minor Rudiger “injury”
Torres playing heavy mins for Spain doesn’t bode well for city but once again you’ll never know
Obvious exclusion is Antonio but fair enough to fit in Son and Foden
What’s the plan if both Armstrong Hwang don’t work out?
I’ve got Armstrong and Antonio and would move to Toney in a month

Got 0.4m in the bank for the Toney upgrade if Armstrong doesn’t work out.

Hope I’ve got the right crowd today…
Please excuse the rookiness (is that a word?) but how do you create your own stats tables to save for future reference in the members area, rather than looking at individual stats and changing views.
Is there a simple way to combine multiple stats in one view?
Would be great to get a short FFS tutorial video on this!
    TIA

If you had made no changes since GW1, your score would be 449.

Your current actual points are 452 , and you've made 6 transfers. So your transfer activity and captaincy choices have been worth a total of 3 points!

But how many hours spent on here per point does that work out as?

    Best option on WC?

    Ramsdale Foster

    Lukaku Antonio _____

im on WC as well and have pretty much the same team apart frim rudiger over chilwell and im looking at either A but without the arsenal double up (unsure on the budget mid)

      or

Foden Jimi plus a budget def im not too keen on a 4th premium def.

Im just worried that there are too many players doubtful for gw8 hopefully the bench will cover well enough for this week.

One of the worst starts in a long time...
Which players do I absolutely need in this team?

    Sanchez | Steele
    Rudiger Dier White
    Salah Jota Raphinha Gray Gallagher
    Ronaldo Lukaku
    ¦ Digne Dennis Ayling

    0.0 ITB, 1 FT

    2. BeWater

I would probably do nothing for GW8. Then use 2FTs to downgrade Ronaldo to a mid priced striker you like (DCL, Jimi, Antonio) and use the money in midfield or defence (Cancelo or Dias in).
