Scoutcast Episode 389 – Assessing FPL risks ahead of Gameweek 8

Joe is joined by Pras and Karam to help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for Gameweek 8.

Is the Scoutcast the most fertile FPL show around? That’s certainly the case this season. Already Seb is taking a break after becoming a dad for the first time last month. Now Andy is also off on paternity leave after welcoming a new edition to his home.

Luckily Joe has been able to call on Scoutcast regular Karam and recent Meet the Manager guest Pras to cover their absences.

Across this epic, nearly two-hour show, our trio focus on the notion of risk in FPL, with a deep dive into some of the game’s less nailed-on picks.

Just how many times do they come on in the final few minutes for a cameo appearance? How often do they stay on the bench? Such information proves crucial, especially in making sure FPL managers’ benches can cope with a propensity to take risks.

Pras uses his analysis of risk to show how his latest Wildcard is shaping up.

Chief among the riskier picks are Manchester City’s revolving troops. Just who will Pep Guardiola select for his side’s annual 5-0 thrashing of Burnley at home? Sky Blues fan Karam weighs up the chances of City’s B-team making an appearance and impressing their risk-taking owners.

Attackers are also discussed, as Joe takes a look at some alternative options to the emerging template. Could Tottenham’s Harry Kane (£12.1m) once again be a reliable captaincy option?

Elsewhere, there is a raft of community questions to cover, fixtures to frisk and differentials to choose.

The Scoutcast’s community team, which they are managing on behalf of a top manager who is taking a break this season, is also looked at.

The crew finish off with a final look at their Gameweek 8 transfer and captaincy plans.

This week’s episode was aired live via YouTube on Tuesday 12 October. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to get notified of future live episodes.

Harry Kane is a swerve for me for now.

Maybe when City buy him in Jan.

Thoughts on WC draft? 0.0m ITB:

    Raya (Foster)
    TAA Rudiger Cancelo (Livramento, Manquillo)
    Salah Son Raphinha Mbeumo (Brownhill)
    Lukaku Antonio Armstrong

Ideally would have Toney and wouldn't have Manquillo, but budget doesn't allow for it.

Looks good. I do agree though that Toney is a very high priority on a WC at the moment. I wouldn't change much though!

Thanks, yeah at least with Mbeumo there's some Brentford attack in there. Potentially may downgrade Antonio to Toney by GW11 or find a way later to upgrade Armstrong to Toney.

Antonio has some tougher fixtures coming up, so you could change him to Toney. Or alternatively, wait until he gets injured and swap him out then.

Which combination do you prefer on a WC?

    A. 4-3-3 with Dias and Mbeumo (£0.1itb)
    B. 3-4-3 with Mount and Duffy (£0.0itb)

    Ramsdale
    TAA • Cancelo • Rudiger • xxx • Livramento
    Salah • Foden • Raphina • xxx • D.Luiz
    Lukaku • Antonio • Toney

It's one of the teams I'm considering. But I'd go Brownhill over Luiz to save 0.1m more.

What to do? 1.8m ITB, 1FT

    Sanchez
    TAA Rudiger Semedo
    Salah Raph Jota Mbeumo
    Antonio Jimi Lukaku

    4.0 Livramento Marcal Sissoko

    A) Roll

TAA training again has made him a must get for me on WC.

What would you change to get Trent into this team? (1.2mil itb)

    Ramsdale - Foster
    Cancelo - Dias - Rudiger - Livra - Manq

It is a risk, but then again - so is everyone in that Man City midfield. Pick one and stick to your guns. I am going with Foden, but nothing wrong with Torres.

Rather suspect he's been slightly usurped by FPL Kryponite Bilva who is back to getting something close to nailed minutes.

Torres will play and score at some point naturally. CL league in a crowded schedule probably gives him a bit of push but impossible to tell when

Why no love for Ferran this gw?
He was sharp for Spain during the break and Pep surely knows how to use him in such game like Burnley home.

If Jota is confirmed out, I'm gonna consider Jota>Torres as a punt this week (no Raph here >:).

    1. TheTinman
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

I'm thinking of punting on him as I have adequate cover on a wildcard and with my team set up to go without transfers for 6-8 weeks I can afford to take a risk or two.

I don't see anyone else with as high a ceiling in that bracket.

Thourghts here guys on a WC, too light in attack maybe missing a Jimerez or Antonio? but Armstrong can be a great differential with those great fixtures coming up?

    Ramsdale – (Foster)
    TAA - Cancelo - Dias - Rudiger – (Livra)
    Salah - Foden - Raphinha - Saka – (Luiz)
    Lukaku - Armstrong - Toney

Don't think it's necessarily too light in attack, just means it'll be easier benching an attacker in order to play your 4atb which I am sure you're willing to do more often than not

    3. TheTinman
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

You're going to be rotating an attacker and mid. I'd rather do that with a 5.5m than Saka which would allow accessing the 7.5m range of forwards. Then you rotate the 6ish ATT with the 5.5ish MID

Not sure they're interested in anyone at the moment, or need to be. 3 months until the transfer window and they haven't got any of their people in any roles yet to do with the playing side. This sounds like agent talk.

What's the general go regarding WC's? Do people refer to try squeeze in the KDB/Vardy/Son type players even if it means an imbalance elsewhere or do you all prefer to have a more 'balanced' side which means it's harder to upgrade to the premiums later but means you won't have to rely on cheapies

    1. TheTinman
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

This is totally preferenced based. There is no right or wrong answer.

As Fleetwood Mac famously said, you can go your own way...

      1. Thomas Magnum
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Agreed. I'm traditionally more of a balanced guy myself, just interested in how others like to roll 🙂

        1. TheTinman
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

I'm also on a balanced team.

My method was to look at all players performing well, separate them by price points, then try to set up a team which has players in each of the most populated price points.

That way I don't have as much emphasis on holding to get to 2FT (which allows a slight change in structure) and I can use Single Transfers to transfer between players in each price point pool to take advantage of fixtures

          1. Thomas Magnum
            • 8 Years
            2 years, 5 months ago

I like that idea a lot. I feel it will help suit yourself up better going forward so you won't look back next IB and be wondering why you brought in player x,y,z when you have to take a hit to remove them

My WC looks like it doesn't take advantage of the fixtures enough.

Maybe I do go without TAA for 2 weeks.

    A) TAA + Mbeumo
    B) Dias + Torres

I can always backtrack and reverse the moves in 2 weeks' time. Torres vs Burnley just feels like a big haul to try and steal.

Personally I have all four, but I can see why you'd consider this. If there is a single whiff of TAA not being ready, you can justify B. Otherwise TAA isn't the 'fanny about' spot for me.

I have Cancelo already. It would be basically to try and get a big haul in the next 2 weeks from City before moving back to more template grounds.

I know it looks like booking in transfers, but the potential is so high. I also have a pretty nailed on team elsewhere that I think will free me to take the shot.

    4. TheTinman
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

I see what you're saying and I'm also tempted by Torres.

But TAA vs Watford who have created something like 2 big chances against teams which aren't Norwich seems mouth watering to me. Clean sheet is highly likely and which means any attacking returns and you're in dreamland.

      1. Camzy
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Dias vs Burnley probably a more nailed on CS tbh. But yeah, TAA can get double digits in that game.

        1. TheTinman
          • 8 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

Yeah but if you add up TAA chance of attacking returns plus chance of assist he probably has a very similar chance of a score in the 6-7pt range.

And you still maintain a good chance of both of those coming in, which then takes it 12-15pt kinda range, of which he has a far greater chance than Dias.

          1. TheTinman
            • 8 Years

Sure. I would take TAA over Dias for this one game.

But the other huge howitzer is Torres vs BUR vs Mbeumo vs CHE. Surely there's no doubt there that if Torres starts as I think he will, since he came back from Intls earlier, he will score big compared to Mbeumo vs CHE.

Have you considered looking at wildcarding a gw 9 team and free hitting this week?
It's something I'm looking at quite seriously now as I think there is huge potential.

So Trent and Torres (and Dias) can be part of a one week punt with enablers like block Brighton defence, Armstrong(s) and maybe Steffen, and then include Mbuemo + Toney + Chelsea as part of your "real" team for gw9 onward.

No point in doing that. Liverpool have Watford this week. I'd just keep TAA.

Downgrading TAA is to fund the short term upside chase of a Torres potential 20 pter vs Burnley.

Klopp has had some good news on the selection front with Trent Alexander-Arnold returning to training after a groin problem, where he worked out alongside Roberto Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Joe Gomez and the other stars not on international duty.

    Lukaku Jiminez Toney

The Liverpool line-up will probably be leaked on Twitter beforehand so you can make the decision then.

    So many uncertainties...

    Sanchez | Steele
    Rudiger* Dier White
    Salah Jota* Raphinha* Gray Gallagher
    Ronaldo Lukaku
    ¦ Digne* Dennis Ayling*

    0.0 ITB, 1 FT

Ayling, Jota -> Azpi/Dias/Cancelo, Mbeumo, for a hit?

Which of these transfers is a priority?

      95
      75
75 (off the bench though) 25 of starting
      95

Based on absolute guesswork, reading the interviews and reading between the lines.

Fixtures aren't the best that's for sure, but West Ham can score against anyone it seems and he'll for sure be amongst the goals more often than not.

3rd highest scoring player in the game, stats are good and fixture proof.

Not sure why his price is an issue?

        1. Zimo
          • 5 Years

It's classic Vardy problem. Leicester look trash but he still ends up scoring. Fixtures aren't that great anymore now though so people won't consider him over the likes of Lukaku (if he's fit) considering his upcoming fixtures. And everyone was on Ronaldo hype train before that.

        2. Holmes
          • 10 Years

There should be an easy route to him. Just because he is highest scoring player, I'm not going to take multiple hits for him.

Cant upgrade Antonio/Ings easily, cant downgrade Luka, so I'm pretty much locked there.

He would be a lock on my WC team.

Think his absence from WC talk is short-sighted

But this is I rather suspect a FFS thing only. Son has been elected and so Son it is. Globally in FPL he has had more inward transfers so he is not off the radar entirely.

    Hey folks,

Fearing this is hopelessly template, but thoughts on WC options?

    Ramsdale (Foster)
    TAA *** Rudiger Cancelo (Livramento)
    Salah Raph *** (Mbeumo Luiz)
    *** Lukaku Antonio

    A) Dias Saka Jimenez (set straight after last GW)
    B) Duffy Son Hwang
    C) Duffy Son Toney (requires Lukaku to Vardy)

Essentially, I'd like a team which needs minimal tinkering going forward. I like the flexibility of A, since B would restrict to two up top if Hwang dries up, but would really like Son. Potential for consistent MCI def points over next 5-10 in A but seems that Son is on for another strong season. Thanks, all!

I like C but just can't see an option without Lukaku. Everyone will be on him as capt next few GW and if he bangs then it's going to be a huge drop
