FPL Gameweek 8 team news: Alexander-Arnold and Jota expected to be available

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Diogo Jota (£7.6m) are expected to be available for Liverpool’s Gameweek 8 clash with Watford on Saturday.

Alexander-Arnold missed the Reds’ last two competitive fixtures before the October international break due to a groin problem, while Jota withdrew from Portugal’s national team squad on Monday having not kicked a ball for his country over the last week.

But both players are set to rejoin full training with their club colleagues ahead of the trip to Vicarage Road.

“They are all good, they are all in a good way, let me say it like this.

“So it looks really like Trent and Diogo will be fine, they will train with us tomorrow completely normal, that’s the plan.” – Jurgen Klopp, speaking on Wednesday about his side’s fitness

Both Liverpool players have hemorrhaged owners since Gameweek 7, with Alexander-Arnold the most-sold defender ahead of this Saturday’s FPL deadline and Jota fourth for transfers out among midfielders.

The right-back will surely return to the Liverpool starting XI this weekend if fully recovered but with Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) not involved with Brazil over the last fortnight, there is less certainty over whether Jota will be handed his fifth successive league start regardless of fitness.

The Saturday lunchtime contest is likely to come too soon for Thiago Alcantara (£5.3m), who has a calf problem.

“Thiago needs probably a little bit longer, [he] was not in team training yet – that’s always not a good sign for starting the next game.

“And the rest [of the] international [players], some are back, obviously some are not back yet. And we will see.” – Jurgen Klopp

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Harry Maguire (£5.4m) revealed he was “progressing” from a calf issue but had still not been involved in full training with Manchester United, which suggests that the Red Devils are set to be without both first-choice centre-halves for the trip to Leicester City.

The only official pre-match press conference of the day saw Claudio Ranieri on media duties for new employers Watford.

The Hornets earlier confirmed that Joshua King (£5.5m) would be assessed after a return to training but that Francisco Sierralta (£4.3m), Christian Kabasele (£4.4m) and Peter Etebo (£4.5m) remain out with muscle problems.

We should have a minimum of five pre-Gameweek 8 press conferences taking place on Thursday, with the rest following on Friday.

Chances are Raphina the one most likely to miss out, the others could all be fine.
I wouldn’t lose Raphina just bench him for a week.

    Thoughts please?

Would you do the following moves for a - 4 ?

    ASM / Greenwood > Hwang / Son ?

or just ASM > Hwang for free?

Could also upgrade Williams (NOR) to Livra?

    A. James Foden Hwang
    B. Livramento ESR Jimenez

Hwang and Livramento are first bench options in either option.

Sorry I could have worded this better.
So in A Hwang is first bench to cover James no show or a Foden no show, both better not be a no show.
A looks like a better way to spend the cash but riskier for sure and Hwang we don’t have much to go on and it’s not like he scored lots of goals in other leagues but looks good.
In B Livramento is first bench.

Could get tricky and a low scoring week for that team wont be surprising. If James is ready, then you could survive without transfer.

Saving FTs does give multiple routes to get a better team.

I could actually bring in either Dias or Cancelo. But I only bought Alonso last week so kind of want to wait to see if he gets back into the team. But maybe your are right and I should just admit it was a mistake and bring Dias in for a more stable backline.

I did the same thing. Decided to lose Alonso immediately and hoping it doesn’t backfire (I did Alonso to Dias) Who knows what happens I have Rudiger too so when James is fit he probably comes in as my second Chelsea defender.

I'd say your back line is fine as Semedo and/or Livra can comfortably fill in if either Chelsea don't show. Further up is more problematic as you don't want to have to rely on Gilmour or Sissoko. But you may have to as you're probably better off using 2 transfers to lose Ronaldo and upgrade one of those 2 cheapos, and you could wait until next week to do that.

Do people really expect Ramsdale to make more saves than Sanchez?

The only evidence I can see so far is the extra save he got against Burnley. In principle I'd expect the Arsenal and Brighton defences to operate in much the same way and the stats to be broadly similar once Brighton have faced some top ten teams. Pretty much all their opposition so far has been shot shy teams.

That's why I took a punt on Guaita on my GW5 WC. You're a palace fan aren't you? Or did I just imagine that? How do you rate my goalkeeper choice?

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years

        Fair call

Palace defence is a wait and see for me. The fixture run has been so bad it's hard to judge how it will stand up. But the two good fixtures Brentford and Brighton at home looked promising. One issue is I don't see the save count being that high given possession game and new style of defence. Historic high save count was mostly down to Roy defence I suspect.

Not seeing a better 4.5 option. McCarthy?

That’s why I’m willing to pay .1 extra for Raya because at least you know he is nailed, or even go with Guaita if I need to save .1

They will probably score similar but I would go Ramsdale on short term fixtures.
Raya is another definite option with his fixtures and I think he might get more saves than either of them.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

I'm not into the Rammy hysteria. On the basis of the evidence so far, the Arsenal defence is solid against flaccid attacks. Fair enough they face a few more in the short term, but he's not a 'top 4' gk for me.
I think Raya and Guaita will make more saves and earn more points. I'm on Sanchez and 2 upcoming fixtures aside, I don't see Rammy as an upgrade.

      2. pingissimus
        • 5 Years

Yep Raya is the one I can see possibly being the bolter but little in it. I'm simply looking at potential double Brighton defence from the bench and wondering if there's a better option but losing Duffy much more likely right now,

I might even do what I never pull off and just stick with one goalie and hold Sanchez through until BGW DGW season.

Thinking of Raya in goal so how do we rank these 3 Arsenal defenders?
    A) Tierney 4.9
    B) Tomiyasu currently own @ 4.5 so will collect any future double rises
    C) White 4.4
Most likely if I go Tierney he would play most weeks, if B or C they would be likely rotated

First thing I would say is don’t panic.

Potentially all 5 of your defenders could start, especially if Rudiger is out (Christensen), so you’d only need 3 of your mids and 2 of your strikers to start to put out 11.

Raphina and Jiminez are the only ones that could potentially miss out on the weekend due to late international games, but even Jimi appears to be available.

Wait for pressers re Lukaku and Jota although a Jota looks like he’ll be ok, and then decide which player is best to replace.

Currently on this WC team (with 0m itb) but two big decisions are whether to go for a double man city defence or not..its "easy" points but messes with team structure if i want more money in attack in future

    Ramsdale • Foster
    Taa • Cancelo • James --- Duffy • Livramento
    Salah • Raph • Mbeumo • Son -- Brownhill
    Lukaku • Antonio • Hwang

A: Gtg. no hwang exit route. only way to get toney in gw10 is via antonio
B: Son + Hwang >> Foden + Jimenez and reverse these moves by gw12
    C: Duffy + Son >> Dias + Foden + 0.4m itb

Three flags in ze XI: Lukaku, TAA, Raph

Two flags on ze bench: Rudiger, D. Luiz

Yet, no panic for now. Got this feeling that only Raph and Luiz won't start. That Tuchel press conference... Sofa hiding time

Why is Mbeumo on every WC draft? Is he better option than Toney? Is double too much?

His stats are underlying. Two is too much for me.

He's cheaper, and the designated goalscorer, while being OOP

I know I'd double up, but it's Mbeumo first for Gray, by GW10. Then Toney for Antonio in GW11. Can't get myself to sell Antonio vs Villa for a hit

I think he's in WC drafts because Everton miss share points, so people are going straight to the long-term asset they want for the GWs 9 to 19 run

        *Everton mids share points

        Autocorrect...

Just to add: if there was a clear Everton standout, he'd have occupied that Mbeumo spot. And since Brentford can score against anyone, it makes sense to make that long-term play on a WC now, and skip the Everton lottery (West Ham and Watford fixtures are great, but who'll haul?)

Thanks. Currently have Townsend on my draft but might go with Mbueno.

On mine too but he has West Ham and Watford at home whereas Mbueno has Chelsea and Leicester. He can wait for me as there really is no rush.

What would you do with this team? 0 free transfers and 2,1 ITB

    Sanchez

    Azpilicueta, Cancelo, Tierney, Rudiger, Livramento

    Gray, Salah (C)

    Antonio, Ronaldo, Jimenez

    Bench: Steer, Sarr, Raphina, Sissoko

    A) Play Sarr instead one of the defender? (Who)
    B) Sarr to Foden/Grealish
    C) Save

GW 8 WC comments - 3 main options I'm pondering over to fill gaps

    Ramsdale, Foster
    TAA, Cancelo, Duffy, Livra, X
    Salah, Raph, Mbeumo, X, X
    Toney, Antonio, X

    A) Bigger at back/ up front - James, Foden, Townsend/ESR, Lukaku
    B) Bigger in middle/ up front - White, Son, Brownhill, Lukaku
    C) Bigger at back/ in middle - James, Son, Brownhill, Vardy

(In all drafts, James could be Laporte and Mbeumo could be Townsend or ESR)

I'm favouring A) for balance and strongest first sub (Mbeumo/Townsend) but not sure about Foden could be Grealish, Mount, Jota also
    B) requires one of White, Duffy, Livra each week
    C) means no Lukaku Vs Norwich and Vardy/Son both awkward price
