FPL Gameweek 8 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned

You’d have been lucky to avoid at least one of your players suffering a benching in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) on Saturday, with usual suspects Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel joined by plenty of others in throwing teamsheet curveballs aplenty.

Elsewhere on a busy day of FPL, Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) continued his red-hot form, Chelsea and Manchester City kept yet another clean sheet, and bargain-bin options Shane Duffy (£4.4m) and Tino Livramento (£4.2m) reminded us of their worth with solid defensive returns.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our resurrected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 8 fixtures.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, PROJECTED BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

It was a fairly quiet day on the injury front, with few fresh concerns reported so far.

Marcelo Bielsa did however confirm after full-time that Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) had missed out through a combination of hip and calf issues, while Junior Firpo (£4.8m) was absent with muscle problems.

Anthony Martial (£7.6m) sat out Manchester United’s defeat to Leicester City with a minor injury picked up while on duty with France but teammate Harry Maguire (£5.4m) made a swift return to playing action – and probably wished he hadn’t.

THE THINGS WE LEARNED

PERMA-CAPTAIN SALAH?

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) is 27 points clear of any other FPL player after his fifth double-digit haul of the season; he managed just six of those 10+ returns in the whole of 2020/21.

The Egyptian is a remarkable 35 points ahead of where he was at this stage in his record-breaking 2017/18 campaign and is now averaging over 10 points per match this season.

All of Liverpool’s front three were among the points in the 5-0 win over Watford but unfortunately for Diogo Jota‘s (£7.6m) owners, he wasn’t part of that attacking trio. His omission was all the more galling given that Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) scored a hat-trick of goals from point-blank range, central areas where Jota has been getting – and spurning – chances in recent weeks.

EVEN DIAS ISN’T ROTATION-PROOF

Only one ever-present starter remains among Pep Guardiola’s squad following Ederson‘s (£6.0m) anticipated no-show and rather less expected benchings for Jack Grealish (£7.9m) and Ruben Dias (£6.2m) on Saturday.

The rest for Dias was a particular bolt out of the blue as he was the mainstay of the City defence last season: the centre-half was a substitute in only one league match from his Gameweek 4 debut to Gameweek 30 (the point at which Guardiola started focusing on the Champions League and FA Cup, with the domestic title sewn up), and even that was because he had just recovered from illness.

Joao Cancelo (£6.2m) is the last man standing when it comes to bench evasion, having started all eight of the Citizens’ league fixtures in 2021/22.

He has racked up more clean sheets (six) than any other Fantasy asset and now sits top of the FPL defenders’ table on a half-century of points. Not only that but despite his premium price tag, he sits fourth for ‘value’ – a metric typically dominated by budget assets – when points are divided by cost.

RONALDO/LUKAKU ARE TESTING OUR PATIENCE

Three straight blanks for Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.6m), four consecutive two-pointers for Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m)… how different the Fantasy landscape looks now following the clamour to crowbar both strikers into our teams a month or so ago.

Lukaku huffed and puffed to no avail at Brentford and now has had just six shots in the last four Gameweeks.

Ronaldo’s opportunities have dried up a tad, too, and he hasn’t had a single Opta-defined ‘big chance’ in his last three outings.

Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) has outscored both of them combined now this season, and his strike against United was his fifth in four matches. No forward can better the Leicester veteran for shots or penalty box touches over the last four Gameweeks.

WHY RAPHINHA MISSED OUT

It was always going to be a tough ask for Raphinha (£6.6m) to start after racking up 71 minutes of pitch-time for Brazil on Friday morning and, in the end, the Leeds winger didn’t even make Marcelo Bielsa’s matchday squad, let alone the starting XI.

The Leeds boss said of his star midfielder after full-time:

“Raphinha, we had decided that he was going to fly after his game, without knowing how many minutes he was going to play on the Friday. In the end, he played 70 minutes, flew 15 hours and today at midday he wasn’t in conditions to take on board even a part of the game. Given that he wasn’t in conditions to respond, we didn’t risk because it’s possible in circumstances like this, injuries can occur.”

MBEUMO IS OWED SOME LUCK

Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) blanked in the late kick-off against Chelsea and despite two goals in the last four Gameweeks for the ‘out of position’ midfielder, his luck appears to be right out in 2021/22.

No Premier League player other than the Brentford attacker has hit the woodwork more than once this season – but Mbeumo has been thwarted by the frame of the goal on six occasions, twice on Saturday.

A total of 16 of his 19 shots have been technically off-target but it’s hard to chastise his finishing ability too much when we’re talking millimetres on those half-dozen occasions.

Image

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 7

Raul Jimenez (£7.6m) and Adam Armstrong (£6.0m) were among the high-profile names who were on bench-warming duties on Saturday.

While the jet-lagged Mexican’s cause was helped by a limp Wolves attacking display from open play (Bruno Lage’s side scoring three times from set pieces late on), Armstrong’s owners would have been concerned to see Armando Broja (£5.0m) turn in a match-winning display in his stead.

Broja is top for shots in the box in Gameweek 8 so far, while no forward could better his total of 10 penalty area touches.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s rotation policy continues to bemuse but given his price and fine display, the Albania international is an intriguing prospect.

He’s long ceased to be an option for many of us but it’s worth highlighting Bruno Fernandes‘ (£11.9m) recent creativity, with his Gameweek-high total of seven chances created taking him to a total of 22 over the last four Gameweeks – that’s 10 more than any other player has managed.

Worth moving early on Ronaldo to Lukaku? Looks like he'll drop in price tonight. Got 2FT

I don't think Lukaku is worth it with the amount of decent striker options at mid price points and premium mids starting to come through.

You may have a point to be fair, Lukaku hasnt exactly been on fire lately. Haven't seen any of the Chelsea game yet I just had this move planned in. Might see what a team with KDB in looks like

If I took Sarr and Ronaldo out for KDB, itd leave me 7.5 for a striker. Might be worth seeing how the likes of Wilson plays now hes supposedly back.

Oof Just 0.1 off Jimenez. Don't suppose you have Benrahma to make that move instead? Toney, Iheanacho and even Broja at Soton worth keeping an eye on as well.

I don't think so. It's very well made and is more a narration on death with a lot of nasty ghosts thrown in. The main actress is excellent. Might like Signal if you haven't seen it, it's all the more darker as all the horrific crimes it puts in the episodes happened in real life.

Films like The Yellow Sea, The Man From Nowhere, Forgotten, Memories of a Murder, are all a must see, Korea have been knocking it out the park for some time now, and Squid games only adds to a long line of fine work from them.

Yeah no doubt I love me some Korean cinema, I'm just curious why Squid Games is the one to get through to the mainstream.

I think Parasite can say it got through to mainstream as well with its Oscar win but SG is massively benefiting from being on Netflix and from how memeworthy it became online very quickly. That being said I loved it, apart from the last episode which I felt focused more on setting up an unnecessary season 2 than giving it the end it needed

Kdramas rarely land the ending unfortunately. At least it should get a second season now, the ones I've watched where they end on a cliffhanger never actually get one.

I have a feeling the 2nd season wont be as enjoyable as the first, has a feeling of franchise about it that can sometimes lower quality, but I hope my doubts are proven wrong

Simply brilliant aren’t they, Hollyowood could learn a thing or two from them that’s for sure.
It is a wonder why Squid Games penetrates the masses, think it’s the the whole ‘game show’ scenario going on that appeals to wider audiences, tv is full of them nowadays, but throw in the shock factor alongside it and it becomes like “woah you seen this?!” haha, I dunno.

Yeah the trailer was excellent at bringing people in but I'm still surprised so many people are watching a subtitled show or sitting through a horrendous dub. They definitely pay more homage to their writers with their TV and films, Hollywood doesn't even invite theirs to the awards ceremonies.

It is baffling to say the least, the English dubbing is hilarious haha, I’ve never had any problems with subtitles, I know people though who simply can’t do subtitles, shame really as they’re missing out on so many gems.
Haha for sure! Stark difference of loyalty between the two, I Saw The Devil was also a personal favourite, there’s so many amazing Korean masterpieces.

Ah yes I've got that downloaded but not watched it yet. I prefer subtitles now, stops me from looking at my phone and actually find it more gripping and absorbing.

Totally agree, also subtitles gives it a more personal touch for me even, because you’re narrating it in your own voice in your head haha.

My limited exposure to Korean series/movies was Kingdom

And whilst it was good but not necessarily great, it will forever have a special place in my heart being the first series I binge watched when we were first told to work from home on the eve of the pandemic, Friday the 13th of March 2020 - a very surreal time in history

Swiftly followed by Tiger King a few days later

It truly was the best of times and the worst of times

I think the issue is more that they don't seem to be playing to his strengths much or know how to do so. Tuchel used him excellently against Arsenal (played off the CBs with wingbacks overlapping, and then later in the game he drifted wide right a bit where he got into more space to run at the defence and it freed up room for the likes of Havertz to move forward as the CBs followed him wide often), since then he just looks like he's sticking up top and not moving far and there aren't many opportunities to roll defenders as they don't play counter attacking. Definitely benefitting Werner as defenders are just attracted to Lukaku but it's frustrating from a fantasy point of view.

I wildcarded him in. Yeah that doesn't look like such a good call right now haha.

Tricky as unless injured or benched can see Jota getting good score v United. Leicester not best fixture for Mbeumo but fixtures ahead good so on balance would get Mbeumo

I’m trying to hold all my transfers late this season with COVID etc., but 0.2m is a decent swing (though Mbeumo is only on 59% on FFFix). Solid move anyway.

when a player is owned by 65%+ of total players, including basically every single good player, it's actually a great time to take a high variance gamble against them.

Liverpool's fixtures aren't that great either and Salah despite his great form, contrary to what most people seem to currently believe, is not God. He will blank and have dry spells.

With Mahrez our KDB is on pens, City are still the best team in the league and probably going to end up as top scorers, and KDB is the one stalwart in the team and a great differential.

I have Salah and possibly getting KDB as well on WC. Almost did Fernandes>KDB yesterday for -4. Are you taking high variance gamble against Lukaku?

Depends on the definition of “it’s actually a great time”

Yes, it’s high variance, which means if you get it right, you get really big gains from it

But equally, if you get it wrong you get really (REALLY) big losses from it

And in the current environment, I’m not sure I’d want to shove all my chips into the middle saying “I’ll put the house on Salah going quiet please dealer, hit me”

    Quotes printed on FFS recently:

“Price rises don’t affect me either, because I don’t follow price changes at all and I only decide if a player is good value in the moment I’m making that decision.” - Fabio Borges, no1 ranked FPL manager

“Although I truly understand that team value is important but for me, it is not as essential as some people make it sound. There will be some struggle if you were on a very low team value especially in the second half of the season when that second wildcard is being played, but if you are playing the game right you shouldn’t be faced with such a problem.” - FPL Milanista, top 500 last season , top 100 so far this season

“Ronaldo/Jota to before the drop to save 0.2??!” - 582715 different managers here

A lot of more casual don’t understand the 0.2m rule - had a friend telling me he made loads of money on his WC by bringing in the most transferred players. Similar with Ronaldo dropping tonight - it won’t impact the 2m+ players who bought him at 12.5m. Price changes are fun element to the game though.

I didn’t understand it until 2 years ago, just transferred who I wanted when I wanted. For the majority of players it’s just a bit of fun

Yeah exactly, the whole concept of price changes is funny as it’s some secret code. Those who are more casual players don’t really care about prices and just bring in the top scoring players as they play the game for fun, but that causes the more keen/sad players to decide whether they make their moves early (when in reality the optimal outcome would be to wait until as close to the deadline as possible!). Do think it’s fun all the behavioural and trade-off element of it though!

They did a calculation that 0.1m in team value is worth around 2 points. So all the small cuts do matter. I think you can balance moving early at certain times with waiting.

I waited two weeks ago because I was uncertain of what move/which players to geet, but moved early in some other weeks for the price rises when the moves appear clear. I think that's the best way to do it.

I've been looking for the past hour to find the analysis and can't. I'll keep looking but it convinced me at least.

It's not that team value is the be all end all, just that on average, high team value correlates to higher overall points tally by a certain proportion which works out to be 2 points or so up to a certain level.

You can build that team value organically or you can be more proactive in defending price drops and grabbing price risees. There's risk and reward. I like the system. Leaves room to gain advantages however small. Things like selling Tsimikas before a drop to bag a price rise or moving 1 day early before X player falls and Y player goes up. Small decisions like that can compound over the season.

            • 14 Years

It sounds like it convinced you alright - but it also sounds like a elaborate windup

You can’t do a univariate analysis on a multivariate problem - isolating the amount of points that “came from” team value is impossible

    3. Bartowski
      • 13 Years

I think Ronaldo and Jota aren't who they're thinking of though. The first one is a massive expensive turd stinking up peoples team and the other one doesn't start. The trick that they're good at is to get to the point where your team looks good and you can make the adjustment on Friday having absorbed all the information for the player you want in. In other words they weren't foolish enough to get those two in the first place.
