Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 8 write-ups with analysis of Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur.

For a shorter summary of all of Saturday’s action, click here.

NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-3 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£7.3m) | Tanguy Ndombele (£5.8m), Harry Kane (£12.1m), Son Heung-min (£10.1m)
  • Assists: Javier Manquillo (£4.0m), Jacob Murphy (£5.0m) | Sergio Reguilon (£5.1m), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m), Kane
  • Own goals: Eric Dier (£4.6m)
  • Red cards: Jonjo Shelvey (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Kane x3, Son x2, Wilson x2

KANE ENDS PREMIER LEAGUE GOAL DROUGHT

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9 1

Having failed to score in any of his opening six Premier League appearances in 2021/22, Harry Kane (£12.1m) finally ended his goal drought against Newcastle United in Gameweek 8.

The England captain looked much more like his old self at St James’ Park, and resumed his link up with Son Heung-min (£10.1m) with an assist for the third goal. As a result, he bagged maximum bonus and ended the match with an impressive 12-point haul for his small army of owners.

Given Spurs’ next three fixtures – West Ham United (a), Manchester United (h) and Everton (a) – we perhaps have a little while longer to scout Kane’s performances, before his fixtures ease considerably between Gameweeks 12 and 15.

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9 2

Interestingly, that also coincides with trickier runs for premium forwards Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), which may be a switch worth considering closer to the time, depending on how each of them perform during the coming weeks that is.

Son Heung-min, meanwhile, was once again on the scoresheet, and has now produced six attacking returns in just seven Premier League appearances this season.

NDOMBELE’S INFLUENCE

Tanguy Ndombele (£5.8m) fired in Spurs’ opener on Sunday, and impressed in his more advanced central role.

During the match, he registered five goal attempts and four shots in the box, more than any other player on the pitch. His 36 final-third touches – including nine in the penalty box – were also match-leading totals, and highlight his growing influence in Nuno Espirito Santo’s 4-2-3-1 formation.

Tottenham Hotspur’s average touch map v Newcastle United in Gameweek 8, featuring no. 28 Tanguy Ndombele

It’s also worth noting that since Oliver Skipp’s (£4.5m) return to the starting XI in Gameweek 7, Spurs have looked a lot better defensively, something Nuno touched on in his post-match interview when discussing his new midfield set-up:

“It worked really well. We were able to be more solid in the middle of the park with Skipp and Hojbjerg being side by side, although we still allowed one of them to have freedom to support in attack. It was the same idea but a little bit different and it worked better.”

WILSON BACK ON THE FPL RADAR

Newcastle’s new era got off to a disappointing start at St James’ Park, but the return of talisman Callum Wilson (£7.3m) from injury was a real positive.

It took the 29-year-old just two minutes to find the back of the net, as he ended the match with a goal, two bonus and eight FPL points.

As for the Magpies, the reality is that the club remain without a win this season and now sit 19th in the table. They also have the worst defensive record in the division, having conceded 19 goals so far, while the underlying numbers are equally as bad.

MetricTotalRank v other Premier League teams
Goals conceded1920th
Clean sheets019th=
Shots conceded12918th
Shots in the box conceded7214th
Shots on target conceded4219th
Big chances conceded2220th
xGC15.2420th
Non-penalty xGC12.8717th

Encouragingly for their FPL owners, the likes of Conor Gallagher (£5.7m), Romelu LukakuIvan Toney (£6.4m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) all take on the Magpies’ in the coming weeks.

“We were certainly beaten by the better team. After a wonderful start, unfortunately the problems that we’ve had for a while now defensively was there for everyone to see. The goals we gave away, you could say it was a lot of good play from Tottenham, but our defending left a lot to be desired to say the least.

I think we’ve started a few games like that – we’ve got off to a good start, we’ve scored and got our noses in front, but unfortunately at the moment, we’re not able to defend well enough as a team. I’m not criticising the back four or the midfield players, football is a team game, but from front to back at the moment, we’re not defending well enough.

We have tried to change and be a little bit more on the front foot, but it’s difficult because you cannot keep having to score three goals to win a match.” – Steve Bruce

Newcastle XI: Darlow, Manquillo, Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Hayden, Longstaff (Shelvey 60), Willock (Murphy 77), Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Wilson (Fraser 77)

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Royal, Romero, Dier, Reguilon, Skipp, Hojbjerg, Ndombele, Moura, Son, Kane

    Sanchez
    White-Cancelo-livra
    Salah-Sarr-Gray-Benrahma
    Lukaku-Vardy-Toney

    Steele, Brownhil, Rudiger, Amartey.

0FT, already did Ronaldo to Vardy

    Would you WC this team..?

It depends. Do you see 5+ real problems in your team ? You're the judge of that but the side looks okay to me. Ronaldo >> Vardy done means you have some cash to fix a problem or two ahead. I don't see a crisis right now.

Absolutely not, may not be perfect for this week, but still a lot of players who look likely for points.

I’m admittedly biased because I’m sitting on my WC too (shooting for November international fortnight), but I don’t see enough issues to use it this week at all in your squad.

Absolutely start Rudiger over Sarr, too…

    Raphinha - Sarr - Salah - Benrahma
    Ronaldo - Lukaku

    Foster: Livramento: Allan: Scarlett

Lot needs changing here with no WC, but have some options in mind:

    A) Ronaldo + Alonso > Vardy + Azpi
    B) Ronaldo + Sarr > Toney + Son
    C) Ronaldo + Sarr > Jesus + Son
    S) Ronaldo + Alonso > Toney + TAA (Abandon CHE defence all together)

Quite liking C tbh but any insights here most welcome, I am in freefall, thanks 🙂

I'd do B or C. Jesus has been ticking over since GW2. Mahrez did nothing Saturday to suggest he threatens Jesus' new role on the right of the front 3. I like Toney as well and that leaves a bit of cash. Son is the key pickup though; 200+ point guy for 10.1 is good business.

Cheers Stoosh! Yeah can’t argue there about Jesus, I quite like the idea of making a jump for him alongside Son, Toney would indeed leave a nice cash amount, a decision best left until midweek games are done and out the way, but C is looking likely, I miss having Son in my team hehe

A big midweek of fixtures so time to switch off from worrying about transfers until we see who starts and who gets rotated midweek, who gets injured and who do we think will start on the weekend … so that it informs any moves 🙂

… of course not many will do that and just blow a transfer before the price rises in 20 mins 😉

Disagree. You look at the Southampton game..he hit the post once and could have had another. Yesterday he scored an offside goal. He's been a bit unlucky. Norwich at home, think a brace is coming. He's always bene a flat track bully, anyway.

I've cast my lot with Vardy this coming GW, so now with funds to activate a 3rd striker (Toney) for the tasty Bees fixtures.

And for sure Jota will take some of Firmino’s minutes. If not starts then sub appearances. Makes him not worth the money for me.

The Firmino factor is intriguing to me. A semi-premium striker for arguably the best attacking side in England. For way less than the heavy hitters. He'll always share minutes with Jota but, like, Diogo hasn't been repaying Klopp's trust recently.

I think what I've decided is that no one else gets a place in my squad for 12 or 13 million quid unless you are performing like Mo Salah, who is a generational talent. Son and Vardy are decent shouts, and i've decided to give Vardy a chance, which allows a formation change and a 3rd striker (have been sporting Antonio and Ronaldo only and I'm done with that). 700k and just limping along since my GW 4 WC. Need to shake it up, and take hits if needed.

Agree, I’m having to take hits for players now and revert to aggressive play, just under 900k, no need to panic, but need to take advantage and climb best I can now, Ronaldo is definitely going for me

If Ronaldo were to go on a scoring run during this tough fixture though he could be a massive differential at that rank.

This is true, but I just can’t see it, something is up at United, and I can no longer carry the expense of him, so costly, I’ve realised that a player for that price HAS to be in some form in order to have him as it limits elsewhere so much. Salah the obvious exception, and keeping Kanu for Norwich, but Ronaldo just isn’t doing it, like not even a little bit.

The other thing though that doesn't help Ronaldo is the personnel, tactics included.
Greenwood wants to cut in from the right and shoot on sight.

Its interesting how sometimes having too much information can backfire due to bad luck, Son today being a perfect example.

Reminds me of last year, I had a 30+ point loss in 1 GW purely due to hearing Salah being benched vs Palace which caused me to bring in Kane for Vardy to get a good captain option. The outcome was: Kane blanked, Vardy got a haul and Salah got 16 points from a cameo off the bench.

Yep - I remember that Salah benching

I took a Son out for a hit this week after getting him in on WC last week and feeling so good about it. It sucks - but also the reporting was solid - he tested positive - so what were we to do?

I’m down 7 pts and a transfer from where I would be - not the worst thing in the world. Wish I wasn’t on the computer at all that last day though.

Remember the Salah vs Palace game pretty clearly. Was out on the road, so had no idea Salah was getting benched. Put the armband on him and the rest is known.
      Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.

I think I did that too, I think I had him for the one he scored 4 in but the game Spurs beat United 6-1 was the one I sold him before (due to pressers)

Oh yeah Son always gets me. I started with him last year - then sold him when he injured his hammy before the miraculous recover.

I did get his 4 goals at least.

              Never sell Son I guess.

I think the issue also is that we have such poor benches that we can not ride out the situation so we jump to the -4 transfer 🙂

Sensibly we should be happy to get a few points off White or Livra etc. and bench the likes of Son when in such a case the information is a bit sketchy

    GW10: Saka -> Mbeumbo
    GW11: Dias & Foden -> Duffy & Son
    GW12: Lukaku -> Kane

    Trent, Cancelo, Chilwell, Dias

Yep, agree on Spurs. Kane showing signs he’s on the way back though, and when he and Son are linking well that usually means points. Couple of weeks to monitor before taking the plunge! Those moves align with fixture changes also for most.

Pretty solid - it’s what most people were working toward.

If I were WCing this week I might double up on Salah and Mané - or maybe KDB.

Premium forwards aren’t doing much. And really like two attackers from Liverpool.

Also think you can afford to go with Chilwell or James in the defense. Massive upside and you have the depth to cover it. Instead of Rudiger for me.

Or might even do Salah, KDB, Son , Raphinha, 4.5.
      Dias > White
      Lukaku > Firmino.

      Something like that.

Yeah you’re both right about Lukaku - probably. Norwich has kept 2 cleanies in a row.

          I’d I didn’t have Lukaku already I wouldn’t get him in - so on a WC wouldn’t pick him I guess.

Firmino would be a wild one - Jesus might also be good around that price.
