Is it time to sell Jota in FPL and is Salah the best Gameweek 9 captain?

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 8 write-ups with analysis of Watford v Liverpool.

For a shorter summary of all of Saturday’s action, click here, while you can read up on Sunday’s two Premier League fixtuers here and here.

WATFORD 0-5 LIVERPOOL

  • Goals: Sadio Mane (£11.9m), Roberto Firmino (£8.8m), Mohamed Salah (£12.8m)
  • Assists: Salah, James Milner (£4.9m), Firmino, Neco Williams (£3.9m)
  • Bonus: Firmino x3, Salah x2, Milner x1

TIME TO SELL JOTA?

All of Liverpool’s front three were among the points in Saturday’s thrashing of Watford but unfortunately for Diogo Jota‘s (£7.5m) owners, he wasn’t part of that attacking trio.

His omission was all the more galling given that Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) scored a hat-trick of goals from point-blank range, central areas where Jota has been getting – and spurning – chances in recent weeks.

Jota averages only 4.0 points per Gameweek this season if we include his weekend no-show, and is joint-20th among FPL midfielders for points per appearance (4.6).

He’s also now the most-sold player in his position ahead of Gameweek 9, with close to 100,000 transfers out.

£7.5m still represents a phenomenal price for a Liverpool centre-forward and, stats-wise, the former Wolves man is right up there with Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) and Sadio Mane (£11.9m), virtually level with his two teammates for big chances per 90 minutes (see below):

But Firmino’s treble surely catapults him back into pole position for the central striker role and he would seem the likeliest to start against Manchester United on Sunday, given Jurgen Klopp’s love of the Brazilian in the so-called bigger games: he had started 36 consecutive ‘big six’ matches before that record was broken against Manchester City a fortnight ago.

With Liverpool playing twice a week until 2022, Jota will, of course, continue to get a lot of minutes. Perhaps he is one to revisit closer to December, a frenetic period when Klopp traditionally rotates more heavily and a time when even the likes of Salah and Mane can expect to occasionally warm the bench in the league, thus narrowing the guaranteed game-time gap between Jota and the more expensive Liverpool assets.

Jota is also a very desirable option come January, when his two African club teammates are away at the Cup of Nations.

For those of us who are already rolling the dice on a weekly basis with rotation risks like Phil Foden (£8.0m), Reece James (£5.5m) and Marcos Alonso (£5.9m), however, Jota might be one uncertainty too many at present.

A FIRST LOOK AT RANIERI’S WATFORD

Claudio Ranieri’s first match in charge of Watford ended in a thumping defeat for the Hornets at Vicarage Road.

Three of the hosts’ squad, Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m), Ben Foster (£4.0m) and Ismaila Sarr (£6.3m), were well owned in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) heading into Gameweek 8 and all were included in Ranieri’s inaugural starting XI as the new Watford boss.

For owners of Foster, the teamsheet brought the welcome news that the veteran goalkeeper was still preferred to Daniel Bachmann (£4.4m) despite the change in the managerial hot-seat – although the scoreline, let alone the upcoming fixtures for the Hornets, further underscored the fact that Foster’s primary role in many Fantasy squads will be as emergency back-up.

How much the concession of five goals, not to mention possible internal disciplinary measures against the experienced shot-stopper, affects Ranieri’s thinking regarding goalkeeper selection remains to be seen.

It was a curious line-up from the well-travelled Italian, with Adam Masina (£4.3m) and Danny Rose (£4.3m) both fielded and having horror shows on the left, and Sarr deployed through the middle with Dennis on the right wing.

Above: Watford’s average position map against Liverpool

The prospect of Sarr being used as an ‘out of position’ forward was always possible following Ranieri’s appointment, given his love of a 4-4-2 (the winger scored three goals and assisted two others in nine appearances in a central role last season), but the sight of the Senegal international being used as a lone striker against Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) and Joel Matip (£5.0m) was an odd one.

Despite being mostly nullified and looking borderline disinterested at times, he still managed to rack up three shots and six penalty area touches, seeing one effort tipped onto the post.

That provides a bit of encouragement for existing Sarr owners despite the heavy defeat, then, although the upcoming fixture run likely won’t encourage any more buyers.

SALAH CAPTAIN IN GAMEWEEK 9?

Salah is 27 points clear of any other FPL player after his fifth double-digit haul of the season; he managed just six of those 10+ returns in the whole of 2020/21.

The Egyptian is a remarkable 35 points ahead of where he was at this stage in his record-breaking 2017/18 campaign and is now averaging 10.4 points per match this season.

It’s hard to decide what was better between his outside-of-the-foot assist for Mane’s opener against Watford and the Egyptian’s superb solo goal on Saturday, a strike that carried an expected goals (xG) value of just 0.05, such was its level of difficulty.

To state the bleeding obvious, he’s in tip-top form.

Manchester United’s defensive horror show at Leicester City, coupled with four straight blanks for Romelu Lukaku (£11.9m), has suddenly made the Gameweek 9 captaincy debate not quite the clear-cut choice it looked a few weeks ago.

The Belgian is still the early front-runner in our captaincy poll (see below) but had Chelsea and Liverpool’s fixtures being the other way round this weekend, it’s fair to say that Salah would be winning by a landslide.

Double-digit hauls against Chelsea and Manchester City have already arrived this season for the Egypt international, who has two goals in his last three outings against United.

Watford XI (3-4-3): Foster; Cathcart, Troost-Ekong, Rose; Femenia (Ngakia 58), Kucka, Sissoko, Masina (Cleverley 46); Dennis (Pedro 69) Sarr, Hernandez.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold (Oxlade-Chamberlain 64), Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson (Tsimikas 64); Milner (Williams 83), Henderson, Keita; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

Without wanting to sound a rabble-rousing Adrian Durham type, and this is only semi-serious... is Norwich's defence that much worse than United's at present? Farke setting them up in a 3-5-2 over the last three and they've looked better for it, albeit against fairly anaemic attacks. United have been dire of late but saved their best at the back for the McFred games v the big six last year.

I think for all the flak McFred gets, they are still the best at screening for the back 4 that United has. Pogba in midfield is absolutely not viable, hes just not engaged at all in pressing or tracking back. VDB should really be getting a run out instead of Fred or McT in all honesty...

Norwich has played Burnley and Brighton for their CS so honestly wasnt expecting them to concede a ton

both defences are an avoid for now for sure.

But depending on the type of performance United have vs Liverpool next week they could be an option for the tougher games if they plan to get 0-0 results like last season, would mean dropping one attacker though and I don't know if Ole is capable of having that many unhappy players in his squad.

But overall even if they were to improve I would still say there are enough better teams to target during this run.

I look at them like this:

Norwich defence is something to target - planning future transfers and captaincy picks.
United defence is something not to be afraid of. I rate their attack as a 4 FDR and their defence as a 2.

It still leaves me with a dilemma over next week's captaincy though.

If the attacks Norwich have faced were any more anaemic they’d be rushed to hospital for a blood transfusion.

Obviously will wait until after Europa League, but already pretty settled on Ronaldo + Shaw --> Toney + Chilwell for free. Wanting to take hit to take out Sarr/Traore. With money no object, which midfielder would you go for the next while? Already have Gallagher

    KDB
    Son
    Raphinha
    Any mid tier City mids?

Planning to get Mbeumo next week for free

True. Its between Son and Raph for me really.

Son has the pedigree and finishing, some meh fixtures and bad team performances, but would be a good differential
Raph has great fixtures, also some bad team performances, but significantly cheaper

        Tough call honestly

Also think the funds are spread around a bit too much, looks like a nightmare picking a starting eleven. I would probably downgrade Nacho or a Mid and use the cash to upgrade the other and then get Azpi instead of Chilwell.

I’ll go against the grain here and say I like it.

I wildcarded this week, brought Chilwell in which has paid off handsomely so far. I genuinely think he’s nailed on, despite most here thinking otherwise. Tuchels been pretty open starting Chilwell wasn’t in the right mind frame to play, he’s regained confidence & is riding high now. I honestly can’t see much rotation for him now, especially as the other option is Alonso who is absolutely atrocious (I’m aware he started the season relatively well but he’s absolutely leagues below Chilwell in every department for me).

Cancelo is a bit riskier, I can see Zinchenko coming in for him here & there now he’s fit, you have the bench to cover that though with Livra and White being starters each week.

So hilarious to listen to Lets talk FPL ranting about Lukaku last night. There do seem to be fashionable name players that the twitter FPL "glittararti" go to. I totally concede that getting rid before the next 3 could be kamikazi, but really Lukaku under such a negative manager is feeding off scraps. I have ran out of patience with Armstrong so am going rogue to take out Lukaku and Armstrong to double up on Leicester attack of Vardy and Ihneacho before I get priced out. And for a minus 4, but its long term. I think its good to have strikers that play for attacking sides. Not only that having to watch Tuchels Chelsea to see how Lukaku does is boring me to tears.

In his defence - Lukaku has always had this in his locker - he can look like an absolute donkey with the best of them, but there's never been a point in his entire career where he hasn't followed that up with brutally bludgeoning some poor defence to death when he puts his boots on the right feet

And I don't even think he's been that bad - I watched him for two years at utd & he was way worse than this, and still returned a goal involvement every other game

The Southampton match has tripped a lot of short fuses - he went into it on the back of 3 league goals in 5 appearances vs Liverpool, City, Arsenal, Spurs & Villa & all was rosy in the garden

And on another day he isn't marginally offside when he scores from Rudiger's pass, the ball goes in off the post from his shot for Chelsea's third instead of coming back off it, and Werner isn't in line before him for a tap in for Chelsea's second - and he leaves that Southampton game with a double (or treble) return - and the same people moaning now are crowing about how he's unstoppable - FROM EXACTLY THE SAME PERFORMANCE (which wasn't anywhere near his best btw)

Fine, fine margins - goal disallowed vs brentford was a pain again, and he definitely did have a bad game, and I'm definitely not his biggest fan

But I am suprised at the vitriol coming his way at the minute on here, it's a bit short sighted and impatient, even by the (notoriously short sighted and impatient) FFS boards standards

TLDR: He'll be grand FFS, give him the next 3

Yeah personally if I didn't have him I'd get him instead of Vardy or Kane off the back of his fixtures and knowing what he can do - but that means very little in the grand scheme of things, Vardy & Kane could outscore him by 25 points over the next 3, or vice-versa

All very valid points, but its a low return for an 11.5m asset. Touchels's negative approach does not help him at all.I just have Armstrong whom having persevered from GW1, have run out of patience and the only way of releasing funds to replace Armstrong with someone half decent, is to get rid of Lukaku. If I hang on for the 3 gameweeks I suspect Vardy will no longer be £10.6 and Inheacho £7m. I also need to generate 0.1m to replace Williams of Norwich is a redundant bench option.

I'm not really interested in him after this good fixture run ends - don't think he's a great FPL pick longer term

But he's in the driving seat to be the top scoring player in the game over the next 3-5 weeks, wouldn't be at all suprised if it happened (or if it didn't happen...)

You are right to a point although Vardy has been consistently delivering and is now higher than Antonio in terms of FPL points . I should add I am a Leicester supporter and not having Evans cannot be underestimated and the difference he makes to Leicester is massive. Rogers is also seeing the light in playing Inheacho also makes a big difference. Don't get me wrong I will worry what Lukaku may do in the next 3, but I think Vardy + Ihneacho is better than Lukaku + Armstrong. We will see.

Definitivelycon the Evans thing, he is very important to their play, both as a leader in defense, he is the glue, and he also is a good distributor og the ball so also sets thing in motion. Soy, Amartey and to a lesser extent Vestergaard is Meat loafers who is not thinking when they defend but are good in one on one situations if they have a guide between them. That is Evans.

Check history again and then interpret. Alonso started thr first games last year when Tuchel arrived, mainlu because he wabtrd to play 5 at the back and Alonso was used to that, Chilwell needed time to get the grip of the system. Then bang, he played most games til the end of season. Start og season this year, Chilwell having some physical and mental trouble after Euro, and Alonso deputised again. Now Chilwell is back, then it will be Chilwell plays most if not all games. Even the german mourinho sees that. Boring he is indeed. No playing style, just pragmatism.
