Zaha and Saka updates as Palace players impress ahead of plum Gameweek 9 match

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 8 write-ups with analysis of Arsenal v Crystal Palace.

For a shorter summary of all of Saturday’s action, click here, while you can read up on Sunday’s two Premier League fixtures here and here.

ARSENAL 2-2 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m), Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) | Christian Benteke (£6.3m), Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m)
  • Assists Nicolas Pepe (£7.1m), Gabriel Martinelli (£5.2m) | Jordan Ayew (£5.9m), Michael Olise (£5.4m)
  • Bonus: Aubameyang x3, Benteke x3, Edouard x1

PALACE IMPRESS DESPITE LATE SETBACK

ARS/CRY

A 95th-minute equaliser from Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) saw Arsenal rescue a draw at the Emirates Stadium tonight.

However, that aside, it was a match full of positives for Crystal Palace, who carried a real threat going forward and probably deserved all three points.

“It was so close but we have been saying that a little bit too often. We have to learn from the games we played previously. I am really disappointed because the way the team came back in the second half, they deserved to win the game.

I am frustrated for them, they were brave and showed character and to concede a goal like that I am disappointed for my players.

We conceded those goals on set pieces on the second phases and we need to work on that. We have to put our sleeves up and put our bodies on the line. We were really unlucky today, it is the way it is but I believe there is more to come from the team to challenge even better.” – Patrick Vieira

ZAHA LATEST

Sarr underlines differential potential as Chelsea earn another clean sheet 8

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) missed out tonight though illness, having felt unwell since returning from international duty last week.

As a result, he hadn’t trained, and sat out his first Premier League match of the current campaign.

“The plan is for him to do some light training tomorrow and he will be joining the team on Wednesday morning.” – Patrick Vieira on Wilfried Zaha

With Zaha out, Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) took up a wider role on the left (no. 22 below), with Christian Benteke (£6.3m) leading the line in Patrick Vieira’s 4-3-3 formation.

Crystal Palace’s average position map v Arsenal in Gameweek 8

As for Conor Gallagher (£5.7m) – who is owned by 7.8% of FPL managers – he carried plenty of attacking threat on the night, and despite serving up his third blank in the last four Gameweeks, ended the match with three shots and was also involved in the buildup to Palace’s second goal.

With Newcastle United up next at Selhurst Park, owners will surely be content to hold another week, but with champions Manchester City to follow, he will need to return soon to keep ticking over.

AUBAMEYANG ON TARGET

Since Gameweek 4, which coincided with Arsenal’s fixtures easing, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m) has now registered three goals and 29 FPL points.

During that time, he ranks fifth in his position for expected goal involvement (xGI), and top amongst team-mates for goal attempts and shots in the box.

Admittedly, he is difficult to accommodate in our squads right now, but with Aston Villa, Watford and Newcastle United up next at the Emirates, he certainly has the platform to keep on delivering.

As for the Gunners, there were few positives on the night, with their 43% possession total in the opening half clearly not enough for a side who wants to take the initiative in front of their own fans.

Despite going five games unbeaten now in the Premier League, that suggests that they will need improve to improve ahead of Villa (h) and Leicester City (a), especially defensively, having suffered several shaky moments at the back tonight.

“A strange game. We started really well, we were dominant and we scored the goal. After that we lacked composure to manage the game. We didn’t have a sequence of passes and then the team was stretched.

After half time we changed a couple of things and we got better but we gave the ball away in areas you can’t and after that we have a mountain to climb.

Credit they didn’t give up, we had some big chances and then got the goal in the end.

My perception was we were trying to protect something instead of going for the second one. We were not comfortable.” – Mikel Arteta

Elsewhere, Bukayo Saka (£6.4m) was withdrawn at half-time, following a heavy challenge from James McArthur (£4.5m) just before the break, and later appeared on the bench with a heavily strapped calf muscle.

“Obviously, he couldn’t continue and he’s a boy that’s pretty tough and wants to keep playing, but he could not carry on and we have a quick turnaround for the next game, so we will see how he evolves.” – Mikel Arteta on Bukayo Saka

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney, Partey (Martinelli 81), Odegaard (Lacazette 67), Smith Rowe, Pepe, Saka (Sambi Lokonga 45), Aubameyang

C Palace XI: Guaita, Ward, Guehi, Andersen, Mitchell, Milivojevic (Kouyate 67), McArthur, Gallagher, Ayew (Olise 71), Edouard (Tomkins 82), Benteke

Don't really believe in players being 'due', probably a bit like Amartey Party below in that it's a gut feel. I'm excited to see how he goes against the likes of Liverpool and City in front of a home crowd and think, as bizarre as it sound, that this tough run might just kick United and Ronaldo back into gear.

Ronaldo playing at Old Trafford against their bitter rival is a telling factor. He’s going to badly want a goal in this one.

I felt Chilwell was a better option than Lukaku this GW as Chelsea wingbacks looks the most deadly. He may not start but it’s a risk I’m willing to take.

Benitez said DCL was going to take a bit more time, whatever that means.

Worst thing is I brought him in for GW8. At least I have a decent bench so will keep him hoping he will be ready by GW10. I do not see better options to take him out, especially not for a hit.

I don’t trust Leeds form and that Raphinha can carry them. His EO does factor highly in me starting him.
Mbeumo is staying. He’s been unlucky and against Leicester, the hope is that those chances will go in the posts than off

        1. Amartey Partey
          • 4 Years

Yeah it is a tricky choice between them. Leeds form makes me wary about Raphinha and Wolves can often be hard to beat. Difficult to know when those goals will start for Mbeumo but it could be against Leicester.

      I'm benching TAA

I know, I know. I just don't see a fixture-proof defence this season, and especially not our defence this season, across all competitions. Just like City and Chelsea

If you come with a high rolling attack, you're getting one goal. You'll most likely lose, but our high line gives enough breaks for at least one goal. That leaves TAA's attacking returns, but I'll take that on the chin as others can get those too

With good fixtures (defenders facing bad/meh attacks, attackers facing bad/meh defences) everywhere else in my XI, I'll roll the dice with TAA B1:

      McCarthy
      Livra Cancelo Rudiger
      (C) Salah Son Raph Gray
      Lukaku Antonio Hwang

      Matthews | TAA Tierney D.Luiz

Trent can basically be seen as an attacking midfielder in FPL. If he does not keep a clean sheet then you can still bank on him getting attacking returns.

Any defender capable of hitting 200+ points should not be benched, just my opinion

What is more, any midfielders in his price range are unlikely to fend him off with points as long as he starts every match 🙂

            • 2 Years

Wholeheartedly agree. He's his own position. I consider him an Attacking Trentfielder.

I understand, but this attacking mid has two assists in 6 games (5 of which were easy games). Clean sheets form a huge part of his appeal to me, especially this season so far. I'm okay with being wrong on this one. It's a huge bet. I'd have benched Cancelo against Liverpool, so I didn't buy him. I benched TAA, but he turned out unfit, etc

            I'm not selling him, mind

            1. Gunneryank

Personally I'd play him as ManUtd are pretty poor, although would still be like them to score anyway. But I get your reasonings, I remember last season I said I was benching Robbo a couple of times as I felt I had other players with better fixtures and form and he had a tough fixture and still people said to me "never bench Robbo". Go with your gut, if you think Liverpool will concede and that he's unlikely to get an attacking return and you have other good options (which you do) then go for it

Is having double CHE defence not a better option than having Lukaku? Cleanies, bonus plus attacking returns at the same price and less blanks.

Two players for the price of one and let's face it, CHE will most likely have loads of clean sheets this season.

Tuchel is relying on his defence to win matches...

Arsenal and Spurs have hardly been setting the world alight from an attacking standpoint though. I’m sure they’ll get a couple of clean sheets in the next few games, but I’d not want a double up after that and don’t want to book in defender transfers

True, Brentford had the chance to slice them open but did not take it.

Only 3 goals conceded and Mendy who is probably the best GK in the PL now.

I would rather take my chances with two of their defenders compared to Lukaku which just does not seem to fit.

And doesn't anyone find it strange that Tuchel as yet has not changed things to accomodate Lukaku?

Here i am agreeing with you again. Brentford pushed them back into their own penalty area for large portions of the 2nd half, Mendy saved their butts and gave them all 3 points, and Tuchel played 8 primarily defensive players! Against Brentford. Like he was playing against Barcelona circa 2009.

Hint for Tuchel: they wouldn't be putting you under the cosh if you attacked them and forced them to defend you. Oh wait....

Honestly I'm not so sure, it was because of an incredible Mendy performance alone that they didn't concede against Brentford and he pulled off similar heroics against Villa a few weeks back too. They've given up a lot of chances and don't look as tight as they did last season by any means, I've been tempted to bring Chilwell back in again but think I'm just going to hold off and just go with Rudiger as honestly I think they'll concede at least once in one of their next two games (probably Newcastle)

      1. Gunneryank
        • 2 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Absolutely. Mendy gave them the 3 points.... somehow. Most teams would have conceded at least once in that frantic final 20 minutes. Brentford may still surprise a few teams who aren't aware of what this side is capable of.

This is actually why I've insisted on having a third premium (Kane, then Ronaldo, now Son) since WC3, even if I won't cap him. So much value this season, and many reliable cheap 4.5 mids too

Conte on the situation with Lukaku at Chelsea. I do not think his points can be argued against.

Former Chelsea boss Conte has not been impressed from what he has seen so far, explaining that the Blues do not know how to play with Lukaku yet.

"Getting Lukaku into the box is a danger," said Conte.

"It is good to keep him away. It is difficult to find a player who acts as a point of reference and who gets forward with pace from midfield.

"He is impressive, he is one of the most difficult forwards to face – he must always play, but Chelsea have not quite understood how to use him."

Why lose James? Surely a good chance of a start this game week, probably wasn’t a hundred percent fit this weekend. It’s not like Christensen is nailed.
I like A from those options.

    Ramsdale
    Cancelo Dias Azpilicueta Rudiger
    Salah Grealish Raphinha
    Lukaku Antonio Jimenez

Foster Smith Rowe Livramento Douglas Luiz
    0.5 ITB, 2 FT

Is Antonio Grealish -> Toney Son a decent move this week? Leaves me with 0.0m ITB. Not a big fan of switching out Antonio right now, but I think it makes sense long-term.

That’s a tough one. I am going to give Antonio another week or 2 and see what happens it also conincides with better fixtures for Spurs. The moves can have an upside but could easily backfire. Annoying that you would be priced out it you wait.

      From Metro:
      Quotes:
Asked for an update on Saka’s condition after the final whistle, Arteta told Sky Sports: ‘We had to take him off because he could not continue.

‘He was very sore in the area. When I look at the action I cannot understand how the player can continue to play.’

At his post-match press conference, Arteta was unable to confirm whether Saka would be fit to take on Aston Villa on Friday.

‘We’ll see how it evolves,’ the Arsenal head coach said.

‘He could not continue and he’s a boy that is pretty tough and wants to keep playing, but he could not carry on.

‘We have a quick turnaround after the next game so we will see how it evolves.’

After a stupid GW2 WC and lots of injuries I have gone hit crazy the last few weeks. Hopefully that can stop now as I am fairly happy with this lot and 2.3 ITB for moves in future weeks. Thoughts on the team and an ideas where to spend that cash down the line?

That extra 2 mil for KDB over Son could mean breaking up that deadly defence.

Son is the better option and nailed whereas nobody knows when KDB will next make a cameo off the bench.

ESR (1 game with returns out of 7 starts, and a derby vs a poor side on the day) is unlikely to get more points than Livra in the short or medium terms. Personal and team stats aren't encouraging either

This is a 5-2-3 team with ESR as an okay/meh first sub, except if you switch him or a 4.5 to Mbeumo this week or next

So I'd play 5-2-3 this week and make that move next week

I'd hold and play him personally, Everton aren't exactly tight in defence and he was unlucky not to score against Liverpool (and should have had an assist too) in a game where Watford barely had the ball. Unless it was just a one-off, he was effectively playing as a CF and Ranieri tends to get the best out of wingers
