Zaha and Saka updates as Palace players impress ahead of plum Gameweek 9 match

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 8 write-ups with analysis of Arsenal v Crystal Palace.

For a shorter summary of all of Saturday’s action, click here, while you can read up on Sunday’s two Premier League fixtures here and here.

ARSENAL 2-2 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m), Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) | Christian Benteke (£6.3m), Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m)
  • Assists Nicolas Pepe (£7.1m), Gabriel Martinelli (£5.2m) | Jordan Ayew (£5.9m), Michael Olise (£5.4m)
  • Bonus: Aubameyang x3, Benteke x3, Edouard x1

PALACE IMPRESS DESPITE LATE SETBACK

ARS/CRY

A 95th-minute equaliser from Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) saw Arsenal rescue a draw at the Emirates Stadium tonight.

However, that aside, it was a match full of positives for Crystal Palace, who carried a real threat going forward and probably deserved all three points.

“It was so close but we have been saying that a little bit too often. We have to learn from the games we played previously. I am really disappointed because the way the team came back in the second half, they deserved to win the game.

I am frustrated for them, they were brave and showed character and to concede a goal like that I am disappointed for my players.

We conceded those goals on set pieces on the second phases and we need to work on that. We have to put our sleeves up and put our bodies on the line. We were really unlucky today, it is the way it is but I believe there is more to come from the team to challenge even better.” – Patrick Vieira

ZAHA LATEST

Sarr underlines differential potential as Chelsea earn another clean sheet 8

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) missed out tonight though illness, having felt unwell since returning from international duty last week.

As a result, he hadn’t trained, and sat out his first Premier League match of the current campaign.

“The plan is for him to do some light training tomorrow and he will be joining the team on Wednesday morning.” – Patrick Vieira on Wilfried Zaha

With Zaha out, Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m) took up a wider role on the left (no. 22 below), with Christian Benteke (£6.3m) leading the line in Patrick Vieira’s 4-3-3 formation.

Crystal Palace’s average position map v Arsenal in Gameweek 8

As for Conor Gallagher (£5.7m) – who is owned by 7.8% of FPL managers – he carried plenty of attacking threat on the night, and despite serving up his third blank in the last four Gameweeks, ended the match with three shots and was also involved in the buildup to Palace’s second goal.

With Newcastle United up next at Selhurst Park, owners will surely be content to hold another week, but with champions Manchester City to follow, he will need to return soon to keep ticking over.

AUBAMEYANG ON TARGET

Since Gameweek 4, which coincided with Arsenal’s fixtures easing, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m) has now registered three goals and 29 FPL points.

During that time, he ranks fifth in his position for expected goal involvement (xGI), and top amongst team-mates for goal attempts and shots in the box.

Admittedly, he is difficult to accommodate in our squads right now, but with Aston Villa, Watford and Newcastle United up next at the Emirates, he certainly has the platform to keep on delivering.

As for the Gunners, there were few positives on the night, with their 43% possession total in the opening half clearly not enough for a side who wants to take the initiative in front of their own fans.

Despite going five games unbeaten now in the Premier League, that suggests that they will need improve to improve ahead of Villa (h) and Leicester City (a), especially defensively, having suffered several shaky moments at the back tonight.

“A strange game. We started really well, we were dominant and we scored the goal. After that we lacked composure to manage the game. We didn’t have a sequence of passes and then the team was stretched.

After half time we changed a couple of things and we got better but we gave the ball away in areas you can’t and after that we have a mountain to climb.

Credit they didn’t give up, we had some big chances and then got the goal in the end.

My perception was we were trying to protect something instead of going for the second one. We were not comfortable.” – Mikel Arteta

Elsewhere, Bukayo Saka (£6.4m) was withdrawn at half-time, following a heavy challenge from James McArthur (£4.5m) just before the break, and later appeared on the bench with a heavily strapped calf muscle.

“Obviously, he couldn’t continue and he’s a boy that’s pretty tough and wants to keep playing, but he could not carry on and we have a quick turnaround for the next game, so we will see how he evolves.” – Mikel Arteta on Bukayo Saka

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney, Partey (Martinelli 81), Odegaard (Lacazette 67), Smith Rowe, Pepe, Saka (Sambi Lokonga 45), Aubameyang

C Palace XI: Guaita, Ward, Guehi, Andersen, Mitchell, Milivojevic (Kouyate 67), McArthur, Gallagher, Ayew (Olise 71), Edouard (Tomkins 82), Benteke

Yeah got him in last week so pretty happy with his 11 points.
He's about as nailed as you get for a City mid/attacker, and he's FPL gold. I had Bruno so was an realtively easy swap.
I like his next 2 fixtures - then will see if I want to keep, or distribute his funds.

Quite unlucky with those transfers as on paper they looked good! Lukaku hauls this weekend or he's out!

Out of those I would pick B, Mbeumo xG is 2.37 for last 4 GW's.

Might want to consider Ronaldo to Vardy too?

Unfortunately I've been very unlucky for some time now.

Any pointers on my current WC draft? Would look to do Vardy to Toney & Mbuemo to Son GW12 when fixtures change. Toughest decision is best keeper to have alongside Foster!

Don't bother planning transfers as it never works out that way. I'd go Raya but my god don't bother with Gallagher! Love the broja pick. Cancelo over Dias.

Thanks! Was worried about Cancelo not playing at the weekend but will decide after champs league fixtures.

Who would you have over Gallagher for 5.9? Doucoure or Gray?

Shame I can't get Raphina in, I could if I downgrade Azpi to James and move Raya to 4.5.

      Solid

Cancelo over Dias for me even though he's at risk of missing one very soon - you have bench for that.

I'd put Broja in defence. Southampton aren't scoring goals really and there's no telling who plays in attack there anyway. 5.0 defender will comfortably outpoint him is my guess and you have absolutely nowhere to go if he fails.

Gallagher? Yes if it was Sky and MoM counted. Suspect he will be pushed back quite soon by Eze - possibly back just when Palace top the ticker.

Returning players who have had both Covid vaccine jabs will enter a quarantine similar to that experienced by Olympic athletes in Tokyo this summer. Allowed to train and play matches from the day of their return, players will otherwise be confined to “bespoke quarantine facilities” for 10 days.

Such a descriptive word 'bespoke'. Joe and Josephine Soap must adhere to COVID protocols, some PL footballers and others have bespoke protocols, depends on money usually.

If you go Smith Rowe to fodder how does the 3rd forward options look? Broja looked good, not nailed on yet but could be a good punt. Downgrading Lukaku and Chilwell to Rudiger/Christensen gives more scope too. If Lukaku starts firing take a hit or two to get him back in later, but selling frees up cash.

Would you take a -4 and do the following?

        Cr7 > Lukaku
        Gray > Raph

Ace, make the move now? Or wait until the midweek games?

Just the first - Gray seems fairly advanced up the pitch and getting a run of easier fixtures

Can't see losing Gray before Watford - arguably the best fixture in the league right now.

Didn't watch the game so can't comment but considering MD was involved I take your word for it.

Shout to me also. As a Saka&Gallagher owner I knew it will be 2-2 without any of their involvment and both of them booked. Saka's injury was unexpected bonus I gladly took 😀

Sorry for being little bit salty but Son's covid saga lost me about 30 pts on my WC, when it rains it pours I guess 🙂

        Morning all.

        1FT and 0.0 itb.

What transfers would you make here? I'll likely do Ronaldo > Lukaku as everyone else is doing but is it worth taking a hit to remove one of Alonso or Barnes?

        Sanchez Steele
        TAA Alonso Cancelo Livramento White
        Salah Raphinha Barnes Benrahma Gilmour
        Antonio Ronaldo Toney

          Ron -- Lukaku

and you look like this, you then have a strong 1st sub with Livra to cover alonso, defo no hits needed

          Sanchez
          TAA Alonso Cancelo
          Salah Raphinha Barnes Benrahma
          Antonio Lukaku(c) Toney

          Steele Livramento White Gilmour

Cheers mate. Not sure on starting Barnes given his lack of form this season, and benching at the weekend.

        Ramsdale
        Duffy Rudiger Shaw
        Gallagher Salah(c) Gray Benrahma
        Antonio Ronaldo Lukaku

        Foster Sarr Coady Livra

        A) Ronnie + Shaw --> Toney + Chilwell (2FT)
        B) Ronnie + Shaw + Sarr --> Toney + Chilwell + KDB (-4)
        C) Ronnie + Shaw --> Vardy + Chilwell (2FT)
        D) Ronnie + Shaw + Coady + Ramsdale --> Toney + TAA + Dias + Mendy (-8)

Leicester voting to temporarily ban sponsorship deals linked to team owners, yet they’re sponsored by King Power.

This is a Newcastle United ban. Absolutely disgraceful

Lol. Making it a bit harder for a backward petrostate to buy the league for theirsportswashing project is about the least disgraceful aspect of the whole sordid affair.

I’m not sure when to use my wildcard. Currently ranked around 100k (well, one point off), team is rated as 80% template.

I’m Man Utd-less at the minute which doesn’t feel too big a problem, starting to feel envious of some of these defenders being posted up, and I think Raphinha/Benrahma may need moving on soon?

        Sanchez (Steele)
        TAA - Rudiger - White - Duffy - Livramento
        Salah - Jota - Benrahma - Mbeumo - Raphinha
        Lukaku - Antonio - Jimenez

I'd say Jota is more of a priority to move on than Raph/Benrahma. Bilva could be a good replacement for him?

Thanks, will see if I can price him in. it’s bizarre but can see me going most of the season without city. There will be times that their players haul but it’s so spread out it’s almost a calculated risk.

Priority 1 Chilwell or James for Rudiger
          2. Jota for Foden
          3. Toney for Jiminez

Your defense is fine. TAA and Rudiger back and rotate the third pick on fixtures with decent cover.

If you can, hold WC to get a boost over Christmas when injuries may hit others hard.

I find it much more painful trying to manage injury flags on the UCL fantasy:

I’ve got De Ligt and ADavies both yellow-flagged and I have no clue how bad it is. Do I use my 2FTs to get rid? Will they play? Are they out until Christmas? Who knows

        Whatcha reckon here?

        A) Save FT
        B) Saka -> Mbeumbo
        C) Something else

        Ramsdale
        TAA, Chilwell, Cancelo, Dias
        Salah, Foden, Raphina, Saka
        Lukaku, Antonio

        Foster, Livramento, Brownhill, Davis
        Bank 0.0m, 1FT
