Scoutcast: Lukaku and the FPL ‘form versus fixture’ debate

Joe is joined by Andy and Seb to help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for Gameweek 9.

After mastering the art of nappy changing, Seb and Andy return to the Scoutcast from paternity leave to attempt to get the better of Gameweek 9.

But the next set of fixtures presents several problems to add to their sleepless nights.

Chief among the challenges is the worrying form of Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m), who is enduring a goal drought in the league ahead of a fine run of fixtures starting with relegation-bound Norwich.

The poor form of another captaincy candidate this season, Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), is another concern.

Meanwhile, there are several form premium picks vying for the armband.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) and his sensational form is certainly catching Joe’s eye for the captaincy in Gameweek 9, while Andy and Seb are adamant that fixtures will give birth to fine form regarding Chelsea’s wayward striker.

During a heated debate, the Scoutcast crew put across their arguments regarding form versus fixture.

Elsewhere, there are cheap midfielders to consider as changing fixture runs and form see a number of FPL managers look to shake up this central area of their team.

Before ducking out early to resume baby duties, Seb runs through the latest over and underachievers.

Joe battles with a new pair of glasses as well as a troublesome microphone lead.

There’s a particularly interesting rough with the smooth round-up of the community’s Gameweek 8 tales of woe and joy as well as several viewer and listener questions to consider.

The Scoutcast’s community team, which they are managing on behalf of a top manager who is taking a break this season, is looked at.

In a packed show, there are also fixtures to frisk, differentials to consider and the crew finish off with a final look at their Gameweek 9 transfer and captaincy plans.

    Thoughts?
    A) Ronaldo -> Vardy (FT)
    B) Ronaldo -> Kane (FT)
    C) Ronaldo, Semedo -> Vardy, Chilwell (-4)
    D) Sarr -> Mbeumo (FT)
    E) Sarr, Semedo -> Mbeumo, James (-4)
    F) Ronaldo, Scarlett -> Vardy, Toney (-4)

    C probably makes sense.

    Kane in for Ronaldo, he does love to score v the hammers and if he gets back to any but if consistency, he's surely no1 fantasy striker.

      I currently own Kane, with the plan to sell him for Lukaku earlier in the week but looking at his next 2 fixtures they aren’t even that bad considering West Ham and United both like to concede a few and then after that it’s green fixtures

        Exactly, Kane can score against anyone really. Spurs are bang average though and that's my worry.

          Very true, but on the flip side Lukaku hasn’t been great himself recently either! Plus, Son being back and him finally getting off the mark are both hopefully good signs.

        Kane got an assist and scored in his last game, Ronaldo has done nothing for 3 games. There’s only one person looking for there form to rise.

          True but Kane was against the worst defence in the division. Not that WH or MU are excellent in that regard but not like it was hard for even Spurs to play through Newcastle

          Ronaldo is Ronaldo.

          Kane needs to play closer to goal to be a better FPL asset. 1 game isn't form.

      He could well be rested. Man City play every 3 or 4 days up to January so they will naturally pick from their huge array of talent in midfield.

      I think Jesus is more nailed in the league and Mahrez preferred to start in the Champions League where his goal return is strong.

        I don’t see Foden getting rested much now. He’s showing his potential now, consistently, and I think he’ll continue coming off in games that are won around the 65 minute mark.

          This could be the way he's managed.

          I suspect he won't be starting every game in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup etc.

          I think KDB and Gundogan are those guys and Rodri of course.

          Foden, Grealish, Silva, Mahrez and Sterling all easily rotate plus the rest.

        In the short term I think it is going to be tough trying to bring players into Newcastle in the Jan window. Obviously money talks but you need the type of player that is significantly better than they have already. Will the new manager be experienced in getting the best out of they players they will have for the 2nd half of the season? Wouldn't be a shock if they still go down.

        Antonio is hard to lose, he still ranks in the top 3 for shots per game over the top 5 leagues.

        Greenwood, I'm not convinced about him either. But I do wanna have as many players from top clubs as possible, and he's safer than the City mids.

      Look up his Wikipedia notes, I think almost every managerial change he's banked big on the pay off.

      Even disputed his image rights when manager at Birmingham City iirc.

      I expect he could take up a line in contractual law disputes for football agents etc and rock up in media punditry too.

        To be fair how many managers in the PL don't get big payoffs when they're brought into a team to avoid relegation and end up getting sacked? I can understand fans' frustrations with his playing style (or lack thereof), but the man was hounded out of the club before he even began.

    'People called me a tactically inept cabbage-head'
    “I really have to thank all the people who have worked alongside me, because I can be demanding and I can be hard work - especially when I was younger," Bruce admits. "When we get beat, I get very low, but when you are managing in the Premier League with Birmingham, Wigan, Hull, Sunderland you do get better at dealing with it. You have to.

    “By the time I got to Newcastle, I thought I could handle everything thrown at me but it has been very, very tough. To never really be wanted, to feel that people wanted me to fail, to read people constantly saying I would fail, that I was useless, a fat waste of space, a stupid, tactically inept cabbage-head or whatever. And it was from day one.

    “When we were doing ok results wise, it was ‘yeah but the style of football is rubbish’ or I was just ‘lucky.’ It was ridiculous and persistent, even when the results were good.

    “The best one was to be told we were a relegation team in all but points…this was all in the first season. We finished 13th. It [the criticism and abuse] got even worse in the second year. We finished 12th, 17 points clear of the bottom three.

    “I tried to enjoy it and, you know, I did. I’ve always enjoyed the fight, proving people wrong, but that’s all it ever seemed to be. A fight, a battle. It does take its toll because even when you win a game, you don’t feel like you are winning over the supporters."

    'My only job was to keep the club up'
    “I wanted so badly to make it work," Bruce added. "I was so proud to be manager of Newcastle United, even in the dark times, I was determined to keep going and to keep this club in the Premier League.

    “The takeover rumours were rumbling on in the background but they would not have bought the club if it had been relegated. Everyone knew that.

    “The only task I was given was to keep the club up. There wasn’t the money to overhaul the squad. Covid drained the club of money, there was virtually nothing to spend this summer, but I wouldn’t walk away from it.

    “People told me to quit and if it hadn’t been Newcastle… I refused to give up. I just felt who could come in who was going to be better equipped to keep them up again than me?

    "I’m really happy for the fans, the city, everyone associated with this great club.

      It's disgusting really. They loved Benitez and were gutted when he left, but he did no better than Bruce. The guy has never had money to spend and has done well at some pretty poor clubs.

        I never loved Benitez. I thought he lived up to his talent of working with limited funds. Not somebody I'd have signed long term with a decent budget, but it wasn't to be anyway.

              rubbish, its the same from them every season from a core group ,yes they wanted ashley out, ok vote with your feet and stay away from the games like the rangers fans did? no. they still go and filled his coffers. they talk about attacking football. well newcastle played that this season -there XG shows that- but had no defence to suporrt it. if bruce had played defensively he wouldnt have heard the end of it. Bruce and Rafa were paractically like for like results wise but you'd never have thought that from listening to their supporters groups.

              Disgusting or not, there's no comparison between Bruce and benitez, in terms of spend and squad. Results being similar is kinda the point really, one cemented a promoted team as lower midtable with little spend, the other did the same and flirted with relegation with more money and a more established side

                      that's patently not true, show me a squad hit like his was, especially with long covid? also wilson has missed more games than he played, that's not bruce's fault. And Rafa had a net spend of 100m in 18 months, how is that 'little spend'??

                          I didn't say a squad was hit like his, I said everybody had to deal with it

                          Not sure what Wilson injury has to do with anything every manager had to deal with injuries too

                          Ummm source on the spend? And not sure why you'd take a moment in time anyway we all know he was operating while the club was in positives net spend wise

              Alonso, Cancelo, Rudiger
              Salah, Greenwood, Saka, Gray
              C Lukaku, Vardy, Toney,

              4.0, Livramento, Tierney, Sissoko

              Next week Sa is gone & the Chilwell/Alonso debate should be clearer.

                Bit early, Adams is back training and Armstrong will come back in at some point, and then you still have the likes of Walcott and Tella that can play there. If he gets another start or two in a row then maybe it'll be time to consider but give it time

                yeah but here's the thing, bruce was proactive, he played attacking football, the fans got what they wanted in that regard (even though they will claim otherwise) their XG at this minute is higher than Arsenals and one of the highest in the bottom half. they need to shore up the back which could effect the attack and therefore the assets you mentioned

                They need a better and more stable midfield to make any use of that, as well as a defensive line that can defend. They'll spend crazy amounts in January of course but I still think they're going to struggle

                Maybe you should wait until Friday from now on before making transfers.

                Taking huge hits for the likes of DCL last week before injury news is a big mistake.

                  Yes, will wait but no point keeping them if the will not be back soon.

                  The -12 I took for GW8 resluted in green arrows, 73(-12) so as long as you pick players capable of paying the hits back then you are ok.
