The latest news on Lukaku’s ankle injury ahead of FPL Gameweek 9

Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) looks set to miss Gameweek 9 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after twisting his ankle in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League.

The Belgian limped out of Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Malmo and while an exact timeframe on his recovery is still not known, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel confirmed after full-time that his striker would miss “some matches”.

Lukaku was the second most-bought FPL forward of Gameweek 9 before news of his injury broke, sitting in over a third (36.3%) of Fantasy squads in total.

Well over 60% of the top 10,000 FPL managers owned the Belgium international, too.

Lukaku had also been top of our captaincy poll for the upcoming Gameweek, with over half of our voters backing the premium striker with the armband:

We’ve now reset the results of that poll, which you can vote on again in the sidebar of this page.

TUCHEL’S COMMENTS ON LUKAKU’S INJURY AND ROTATION

It was a double-whammy for Chelsea on the injury front, with Timo Werner (£8.6m) succumbing to a hamstring strain shortly before the interval.

Tuchel said of his injured strike duo:

“Romelu twisted his ankle with the foul in the box and Timo has a hamstring injury. It will take a while for both of them. We need more examinations to be more precise but they will be out for some matches.

“If I knew before [the game], I wouldn’t have [started Lukaku]. But how can you know it before and it was necessary that he was on the pitch and he started very strong. I spoke with him about the situation, that I think that he carries a bit of mental fatigue around with him. I think that is also normal but he is our number nine and is our reference upfront.

“The best thing against mental fatigue is a goal and we knew that we could be the dominant team. We knew that we wanted to build our attack today with Mason and Timo around him and him as the reference up front in the middle.

“I had the strong belief that in a Champions League match he could turn things around in terms of scoring and being decisive, which he actually did because he was super strong in our start. He took the foul and without him maybe it’s not 2-0,

“So no, I don’t regret it. It’s not a muscle injury or because of physical fatigue. He is a little bit overplayed, this is my opinion and maybe I’m not even right. This was a moment to give him confidence and let him play. I don’t regret it, things like this can happen. It was bad luck.”

There were also some ominous words on rotation from Tuchel, who named a strong team for a routine win over the Swedes:

“This will be maybe one of the shortest pre-match meetings in my history of coaching because we want everything on the same level. We have the chance to switch on some positions, to demand from everybody physically the same input.”

Ben Chilwell (£5.7m), Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.2m) and Andreas Christensen (£5.1m) started their second successive matches of the week, although the first two of those were handed breathers midway through the second half.

Antonio Rudiger (£5.8m) and Thiago Silva (£5.5m) were both back in the starting XI after missing Gameweek 8 but Reece James (£5.5m) and Marcos Alonso (£5.9m) were again only substitutes.

WHO PLAYS UP FRONT NOW FOR CHELSEA?

On the assumption that Werner and Lukaku do indeed miss Gameweek 9, Chelsea need a new attacking spearhead against the Canaries.

With the likes of Olivier Giroud, Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi gone from the club either on a permanent basis or on loan, the European champions are short of options up top.

Enter Kai Havertz (£8.1m).

The German replaced Lukaku after 24 minutes of Wednesday’s clash, going on to score his side’s third goal with a fine finish having earlier wasted a clearer opening. Havertz racked up four shots in all, the most of anyone on show.

Havertz has occasionally played as false nine in the past and ended 2020/21 mostly being used in that role, although hasn’t had a look-in through the middle since Lukaku joined. He’ll very likely be the man playing centrally on Saturday and at 3.9% owned, is a veritable FPL differential for the visit of the Premier League’s basement club.

“Always, always a chance and it is always necessary to prove a point. We will have some games without Romelu and Timo so everyone is invited to join the race for minutes on the pitch.

“When they are on the pitch, they need to show their hunger and determination to be decisive and be in the box.

“This is how it is and they did it today but there’s still room to improve and on Saturday we need the same performance, hunger and determination from whoever starts for us because we need goals to win matches. We want to find solutions without Romelu and Timo, that’s clear. Everyone will join the race to be decisive for us.” – Thomas Tuchel on Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson-Odoi

Do I go Raphinha or Mount?

Not quite enough to stretch for Havertz. Those fixtures are so good and now that Werner is out, Mount is more nailed as well.

Some thoughts here? I got Armstrong for this run now but then he gets benched, don't really want to get rid but might have to.

    2FT and 0.2 ITB.

    Sanchez
    TAA Rudiger Christensen
    Salah Jota Raphinha Greenwood
    Ronaldo Antonio Armstrong

    (Steele Livramento White Gilmour)

    A) Jota/Greenwood to Everton mid
    B) Gilmour to Allan
    C) A + Armstrong to Toney
    D) A + Gilmour to Mbuemo
    E) Something else

Probably C. Maybe Greenwood to Mbuemo and that gives you decent funds for improving Armstrong.

I'd consider rolling a transfer as you probably don't want Sanchez after this GW as they play City and Liverpool

Getting rid of Jota/ Greenwood to an Everton mid probably weakens your best 11 and with the rotation risk of Christensen and the potential that Armstrong isn't going to start I'd just consider doing Gilmour to Brownhill if I was you. Think would add another 0.1 ITB for next week and then you'll have more idea on the Southampton attacking choices.

Then next week you'll have 2FTs which you could use on Sanchez and another player. Personally I want to get Mendy in, I almost did on my WC last week but I was put off by it and regret it! You could move a number of players to get the funds available for it

I find the double Brentford attack a curious one. Between them so far they've had 4 goals and 2 assists in 8 matches. It's unlikely they get much more than that p/game as the season goes on.

They both offer good value in their positions, but I think the double-up is crazy.
Realistically the best scenario is 1 attacking return between them p/game. Will be plenty of games where they nothing between them, or you could hedge your bets and go:

        Toney + Townsend/ Gallagher/ ESR
        or
        Mbeumo + Armstrong/ Edouard/ ASM/ Maupay

I'm a fan of double defence this season, I almost did GK and 5 defenders all from Liv, MCI, Che to smash it when they get the cleanies!

Kane over Son though? Son clearly better value so far this season and doubt you want both of them for the next few games. Maybe when the fixtures soften.

So yeah, maybe Kane if the decision is just as a straight Lukaku captain. But Son if it's part of a double move and bring in a cheaper forward.

A week ago, Lukaku a definite captain and all will make hay. This week due to performances by Kane (vs Newcastle by the way) and Salah's 2nd worldlie in as many weeks, the noise for FPL change has been deafening.
Havertz was at his best when playing down the middle last season. Simple if you want to use 2 tfr's. If you want Kane, unless you have the spare cash it is 2 tfr's with a probable downgrade.. Vardy into the mix with his performances, but, in my view has been a trifle fortunate to get the points he has.
If it is costing 2 tfr's anyway, 2 playing Chelsea is a must. Vardy or Iheanacho or Daka will cost 1 tfr and will be the boring pick. Kane has yet to prove himself and is 3 weeks too early.
I will have Vardy, Havertz and Son for a minus 8. If I cannot recover the outlay over the next 6 weeks I will show my bum in Woollies.

I could just keep Veltman, although his price will drop possibly tonight and his place is at risk.

If Lukaku and Werner are both out then surely Havertz starts upfront, or at the very least starts.
I wouldn't be making to moves till close to deadline, although maybe if I am to move Veltman I'd likely do that very soonish to beat price drop

I went in early on Azpilicueta as he tends to always start and is something as RWB. So gives you the consistency plus sometimes a bit more attacking threat as well.

Having 2 Chelsea full backs is risky! Christensen and James might be cheap double, I'd guess generally at least 1 starts as if James doesn't then Azpilicueta moves to RWB and opens a place a CB. With Livramento could work ok

Mbeumo and Hwang both starting I'm not sure on. Not many options to go to from them either unless have money ITB?

Son and Vardy - the thing with having both is will you ever captain them? If not then having both is probably detrimental to the overall starting 11. They're both in price brackets with little to no other options around them as well so changing would likely need 2 or 3 transfers and taking a hit probably. I'd pick 1 if was you. Son + Jimenez or Vardy + Foden type options. Or even Jimenez + KDB!

Livramento could easily be worthy of starting though with the run Southampton have, so I'd downgrade Mbeumo to Brownhill myself then you have lots of options for Hwang like Eduoard/ Maupay/ Toney

I think the value is in defenders this season so worth at least 4. You could easily shift a few things and get Matip in for Manquillo or even Rudiger really.

      1. Steager
        • 6 Years

        Some good points.

Foden, I'm not sure will start either. Went for Son because of Guaranteed starts and consistency.

Jimi, I just don't think is consistent. The striker slot is difficult so I went for Hwang as He's not that much so can rotate with Liv, mbuemo.

I think it might be worth upgrading Manquillo to Duffy or Brentford defence

        1. Tarby

I think Jimenez is very consistent, he's not exciting is the thing! Usually it's 1 attacking return, but not the big scores like others can offer. With Hwang he could get benched a lot with their options is my concern. His historical scoring record is very poor though, I think we'll find his start is an anomaly.

I like a lot of your team, just a different approach to mine. The beauty of FPL isn't it, so many different ways to approach it and at different times of the season different approaches will prosper more than others!

You certainly have a tasty players in that line-up!

    2 questions gents:

Who Would you rather have out of:

    A) Azpi
    B) Chillwell

    And

If you could have TAA over the chelsea duo above, but means you would have no chelsea defence, would you still opt for TAA over them?

    Thanks muchly

You'd have TAA over both of those at the expense of meaning you'd have no Chelsea defence at all? Interesting...

FWIW, rest of defence would be Dias, Cancelo, Tierney, Livramento

    2 FT
    A) Ronaldo to Kane and roll other transfer
    B) Ronaldo and White to Vardy and Cancelo

Tough one! I really fancy Kane and his low ownership.

Yes or no? Still have Alonso and James in defence but TAA, Semedo and livra can play this week if they are benched again

A few hits may be taken this week with people making early transfers to the likes of Vardy & Azpi.
If I knew Lukaku was only missing this fixture then I would likely roll my transfer but that doesn't seem to be this case, correct?

Already have Vardy and Antonio. Looking to transfer to get rid of Lukaku. A move to Auba/Jimmy means I can upgrade to TAA.
