Scout Notes

Tierney injury latest as Smith Rowe and Aubameyang impress in Gameweek 9

We begin our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Arsenal v Aston Villa.

ARSENAL 3-1 ASTON VILLA

  • Goals: Thomas Partey (£5.0m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m), Emile Smith Rowe (£5.4m) | Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Smith Rowe, Aubameyang | Leon Bailey (£6.4m)
  • Penalties misses: Aubameyang
  • Penalties saves: Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m)
  • Bonus: Smith Rowe x3, Martinez x2, Partey x1

IN-FORM AUBAMEYANG

A dominant Arsenal display against Aston Villa saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m) continue his fine form, as he bagged a goal and assist in Gameweek 9.

As a result, it’s now five attacking returns in the last six Gameweeks for the Gunners captain, a period which has also seen him produce 35 FPL points.

However, tonight’s six-point return could easily have been more, as despite converting the rebound, his initial penalty was saved by the impressive Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m), and combined with a second-half yellow card, ensured that he narrowly missed out on bonus.

SMITH ROWE SHINES

Lining up in a 4-4-2 formation, Arsenal ran out deserved 3-0 winners and were at their best on the break, with Emile Smith Rowe (£5.4m) in particular thriving.

Featuring on the left of the midfield four (no. 10 below), the youngster produced his second double-digit haul of the campaign, and completed more passes on the night than any other player on the pitch.

Arsenal’s average position map v Aston Villa in Gameweek 9

Elsewhere, Thomas Partey (£5.0m) had earlier opened the scoring with a glancing header from a Smith Rowe corner, having seen his volley earlier in the match cannon off the bar, while Bukayo Saka (£6.4m) put in an encouraging shift on the wing.

After tonight’s win, Arsenal are now unbeaten in six Premier League games, with Leicester City (a) up next in Gameweek 10.

INJURY LATEST

Kieran Tierney (£4.9m) missed out tonight due to a bruised left ankle, which certainly doesn’t sound too serious, though we await further updates from the club regarding the severity of the injury.

Elsewhere, while initial reports suggested that Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) was replaced after 67 minutes with a knock, Mikel Arteta confirmed in his post-match interview that it was in fact only tiredness.

“He worked really hard, he hasn’t played many minutes, he’s not played any internationals and he’s lacking a little bit of that resilience to finish the games. But it doesn’t matter, the time he was on the pitch he was terrific.”

BAILEY ON THE WATCHLIST

After a dismal first-half showing, which saw Villa fail to register a single effort on goal, they improved after the break, which coincided with Dean Smith reverting to a back-four system.

As a result, his team looked far more comfortable, with substitutes Leon Bailey (£6.4m) and Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m) making a real impact off the bench.

Both players were key in adding more energy, and will now surely be pushing for a start against West Ham United (h) next weekend, as Smith’s troops look to get back on track after three defeats in a row.

VILLA SET-PIECE WOES

Villa conceded from another set-piece tonight, and looked awkward throughout defending dead-ball situations.

Having thrown away a two-goal lead against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend in similar fashion, it’s becoming a worrying theme for Dean Smith’s side.

However, that could be good news for Tomas Soucek (£5.9m) owners in Gameweek 10, with West Ham United up next.

“It was a very poor first half. Not recognisable as a Villa team we have come to know. They deserved what they got. We got dominated physically. If we had got through the half at 1-0 I would have fancied us, but 2-0 was hard to get.

We knew Arsenal would start strong. I’d love to say it was the system and personnel but we just didn’t play well. Didn’t win enough balls, weren’t good enough on the ball. I’ll accept the second half all day long but the first half was not good enough.” – Dean Smith

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tavares, Saka, Sambi Lokonga (Maitland-Niles 73), Partey, Smith Rowe, Aubameyang (Martinelli 90+1), Lacazette (Odegaard 68)

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Konsa, Tuanzebe (Bailey 45), Mings, Cash, McGinn, Luiz, Targett, Buendia (Ramsey 68), Ings (El Ghazi 77), Watkins

Can someone explain this to me? I get that it is said when you are at the top of a column (which this isn't quite, I know).

      But why?

And why 'Play up'? I doubt very much everyone on here knows the poem

Some Pompey fans think it’s funny.

        They don’t get out much.

And the probably won’t get out of League One, either.

"Pompey" is northern slang for a prison, and there is a naval prison in Portsmouth. ... There is, or was, a naval expression "to play Pompey" meaning "to wreak havoc". Any of these might have given rise to the nick-name, but no-one really knows. And to repeat, the earliest written reference is to the football team.

One possible explanation for Portsmouth being called Pompey is that a group of Portsmouth-based sailors allegedly climbed to the top of a column called Pompey's Pillar.

"2. It is said that a group of Portsmouth based sailors, who climbed Pompey's Pillar near Alexandria in Egypt around 1781, became known as the 'Pompey Boys' in recognition of their feat and that this term carried over into common usage to describe anyone from the City of Portsmouth.

Pompey's pillar in Alexandria, Egypt, is a 28m high granite column, mistakenly attributed to the Roman General Pompey, but actually built as a memorial to the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The pillar is made from very smoothly worked granite, so climbing it would have been quite a challenge."

Top of a column near Alexandria - top of a column of chat.
Sounds to me like a possible reason for the expression being used here.

I suspect it might also have given Frankie Howerd the idea of calling his sitcom "Up Pompeii".

Well done, I wish I had retained ESR now, but got rid on my wildcard. Transferred him out as apart from one GW with 12 points, just a mix of 2's and 3's, not good enough. Always the case, as soon as I sell, the player has a field day and a haul.

Blows my mind how players can be injured and nothing comes out until kickoff. Like it’s kinda impressive. Or journos in the UK are bad at their jobs. Maybe both.

Anyway need at least one of my Chelsea defenders to play to have a backline now. Thanks Tierneys secret ankle bruise!

Just how your 'mind is blown' about managers being called to a press conference that is just an obligation, then not necessarily giving away to the opposition manager, who is watching, which players might or might not be playing.

          Seems... obvious.

Well most professional sports that aren’t soccer I’m familiar with - in Australia, the US - have a level of transparency about injuries. Part of that is preventing things like gambling plunges

Aside from that its legit impressive there aren’t leaks or training photos or anything that comes from the literally tens of thousands of people obsessing over Arsenal, FPL, EPL generally etc.

Players play injured. Have done for years, especially the biggest players in the biggest games. They might need painkillers to play and not a great long term plan. Most of the time they can do it and there won't be a word said about it.

Yes I get this. And I’ve just been informed by someone else it’s wrong to consider this from a different perspective but… I’m just amazed there isn’t even a rumour a lot of times. You definitely know about injuries in the other sports I follow, even if the severity is somewhat murky, even if they are playing through.

Fair point indeed but I think we're probably only bothered by that if the non-reported injured player plays and does badly if we have picked him to start. If you had Tierney, he kept a cleansheet and scored and you heard later he played through an injury it wouldn't bother you or other Tierney owners at all.

It's damn hard to keep track if all the injuries, COVID etc. When your team is picked and deadline passes relax and enjoy the football.

Do you not think that is a bit parochial, seeing all things your own way?

I don’t know, they looked solid for most the game and he’s cheap. Villa’s switch to 4-4-2 seemed to be more familiar to their players and was naturally more balanced (although it’s definitely not the system they made their summer transfers in mind with…)

I think partly people just didn't want to bring in Raya and have to play him against Chelsea right away. But he matched Ramsdale in GW8, and now has a great run of fixtures.

He scored 28 goals, or 27 or near, first year at United (if that was certain other players, people would be creaming over the total|). Only second season when something went wrong, not sure what, he didn't score prolifically.

He's scored tons of goals throughout his career.

Don't understand the thinking that underlies the idea he is some kind of clown.

300+ goals in all and he's only 28

5 blanks in 7 PL games. The break will do him a world of good. Had a very short preseason and Tuchel said he was fatigued but inexplicably played him v Malmo.

Yeah, but seven games is just not science as a sample. When you have someone who has consistently scored so many goals. It's so contrary to pick seven games when he hasn't scored. At the end of the season, how many goals do you seriously think he will have? It's not going to be on that same ratio, he's going to catch up big-time, surely.

Agree about Malmo. But then Tuchel did make the only fair point pist-match, played him because he thought he;d score and get his mojo working. Backfired, of course

There’s certainly an issue there. I do think it has more to do with service & the way the team is structured. At the end of the day, if he helps the rest of the team score goals, that’s what matters from a Chelsea perspective. From an FPL one… I guess don’t own until he starts delivering.
One point I don’t understand is both Conte and Tuchel talking about his pace. He’s still a big lad and I really can’t imagine him doing a prime vardy run & score. And he pressed almost as little as Ron

So your team is compared against every team of the top 10,000 and the mixture of EOs you have is correlated with the mixture of EOs in each top10k team and then averaged.

Template rating just gives you an idea about how similar or differential you decided to be this gw, which could go either way.

EOs on the other hand are very important, they are literally how ranks work. They determine how big your rank losses and gains if a particular player scores well.

Yes of course that still holds. However, if you own Salah and he gets 10 points vs if you own Jesus and he gets 10 points, the outcome is not the same. Because in one case you got points that everyone else got too, while in the other you got points that nobody else got. So you want to maximize the relative points between you and everybody else and that's what EO indicates.

It's all about risk management, nothing else. If you know Salah will have high EO, are you the type of manager who will fear of missing out and prefer to be safe to avoid huge rank swings, or will you take a risk and go against the flow. If one keeps playing it safe forever, their ranks won't probably change much, and if one take risks left and right, the rank will swing a lot.

At the end of the day, if you're 100% confident in your choices, you shouldn't worry about ownerships. If you are not very confident, you might want to make choices about when to take risks and when to play safe.

Yes it is definitely. But in a more mathematical sense, it's about trying to score more than the others, and not just a lot of points in absolute. Scoring 100 points will give you a red arrow if the average is 101+ etc..

                        Enjoyed the conversation mate!

To me, I just always wanted to understand how changes of overall ranks work, and that's really what I created LiveFPL for. To understand what's going on mathematically. However, I personally don't explicitly think much about ownerships (bought Jesus for example this week and ignored Vardy) but getting a sense of how ranks work has made me more aware of the potential consequences of my decisions which I believe has made me a better manager.

Going to break the trend by not moaning or celebrating about players I had - thought it was a good game that told us a lot.

Arsenal still a little vulnerable at the back, but they’re improving. Villa a lot more comfortable in a 4-4-2, front to back, although it means one of their big summer signings likely doesn’t fit in the XI. Interesting!

(Also will definitely celebrate, I’ve kept faith with ESR for far longer than points justify based upon his underlying stats, minutes and the eye test…)

I've watched it a few times and to me, it appears Targett gets a touch on the ball. It is also noticeable that Lacazette's dive is a little delayed as well. Poor decision from the ref who has to do better with VAR in these situations.

Agreed. VAR shouldn't have given it according to their rule of it having to be a clear-and-obvious wrong decision by the ref, who didn't initially give it.

You should check the highlights of when we played them in February and they beat us 1-0, they should have got a red card for a tackle on Saka and we should have had a clear penalty.

      Best team won today.

Just bored, any input on my longer term thinking?

    Sanchez
    Cancello Dias Christiansen
    Salah Gray Raphinia Havertz
    Jiminez Vardy Antonio

Steele Livaramento White Gilmor 1FT 2.1M ITB

    Looking at something like-
    Gray to Mbembo
    Dias to TAA
    Later Havertz to Son
Jiminez to Toney and thats about all budget or Jiminez to 4.5 and have cash for later Vardy to Ronaldo

These are not planned out, just looking at what I could do next. Thanks for any thoughts

i don't mind christensen. with the backup defenders saving the money for him isn't silly.

all the plans make sense in advance - who knows how it will play out.

i might go havertz > mbeumo first...if he doesn't do what you hope that is. frees up a lot of money to do whatever you want. though no DCL doesn't really help grey.

      my team is super similar
      - Jota over Gray
      - Azpi over Christensen basically.

think it's a versatile place to be.

Ive not captained Salah that much though, couple of Ronaldo fails and a Lukaku fail too, and I’ve wildcarded, took hits, had loads of auto subs and stressed myself silly for virtually nothing.
I found it quite revealing actually, when you take into account the scores for the great and good league too, how similar they are. Don’t think I will be stressing as much over transfers and captaincy in the future

          That's the point.

Your losses compared to week 1 are most likely due to having permanent captain Mo in that team. My real team captaincy score is way off perma Mo which is the only reason the two are close.

Try looking at scores without captaincy.

Looked at arsenal aston villa game rightnow after fist goals started to skipp most of it looked only at score(Martinez in play this week) Was pretty bummed that I chose him instead Sanchez after the game due to score and so on. So I was positivly suprised after I looked at his points in FPL. By skipping most of the game I missed the penalty part as well. 🙂

Sanchez might still outscore Martinez , but 10 points is good score for a goal keeper I thunk. 🙂

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

The points came from a penalty save that resulted in a goal. The Villa defence is poor; Brighton's is far better.

      1. Hiiler
        • 2 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Agreed that Brightons defence is better, but the reasoning for going with Martinez this GW was for me that Brighton plays with Man City this time.

        Saw the penalty also now.

      2. Hiiler
        • 2 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

And an other thing that I saw now when comparing those two teams defence, was that before GW 9 they were on same points, both had 31. So while Brighton's defence is better Goalkeepers seem to be on the same level rightnow at least.)

But it would mean Sanchez is a little bit better because he is cheaper. 🙂

Also quite interesting to see that - on tiny sample size - some of the most aggressive players in hits are right at the top. Noticeable how in the midrange you see fewer hits. All quite logical of course.

Have been unnaturally conservative this season so far myself - contenting myself in using FTs on differentials and not taking hits,

Rose to 10.5 out of nowhere in IB

Happy to have jumped on when he was still at 10.4 and everyone was ignoring him still and flocking to Son. Hope he scores some more, and raises in value more, but feels like I need to find another differential soon

        Ditto

But already have other differential in place. One that seems to be finding just a little traction on here judging by comments. Toney is very template judging by ML - already 30% plus before fixture turn. Edouard is way behind. Same fixtures just in reverse order.

Ownership could swing today with a Toney blank and Edouard goal but I doubt it. Too many are put off by City in 10

I believe that Edouard a great option, especially if you have already Mbeumo and don't see the appeal of Brentford double up, like me. As well as Edouard, I am watching Olise and his potential going forward, with those fixtures (other than city) and nice play style under Vieira in mind, I think they can both make an appeal soon enough

Would love Olise to become nailed but slightly fear Vieira is going to stick to his word and use him sparingly for a while. Has said he needs time to become a starter. Also Eze is due back around 12 which will put added pressure on mids selection.

That's what worries me, Palace's squad, specifically mids and attack is pretty stacked. I'm sure that Olise can play a few positions, but will be near impossible to start everyone once they're all fit. 1G 1A off the bench the last 2 games means he's making a case for himself, but of course the Vieira comments tell us that like you said he won't be ready to be a weekly starter just yet, but I feel that there is value in Palace if you can find it...

Thank you Aston Villa. You looked like world beaters when you faced Bruno and Ronaldo (2 players I owned), but looked like wolrd minnows when faced Auba and ESR (2 players I highly considered).

Played better in 2nd half when they went 4 at the back and brought the two subs on.

Honestly, that penalty was a joke on several levels. 1) Targett won the ball, full stop; 2) lakazette is a known cheat and it was an obvious dive; 3) pawson should have blown for half time, in which case the half would have been over upon the save. There really should be an inquest over this.

For the record, I’m not a Villa fan. Cant stand them.

All your reasoning is pointless as the first one is of you follow the logic of clear and obvious error Var should not give any light for the screen to be used. Those in the VAR room should always ask themselves, is the foul clear and obvious? Like that one, Targett is clearlyvin contact with Lacazette, but also clearing the ball and when Dawson decides No pen there is No clear and obvious mistake, because you can argue for both cases. Turn it to the opposite, if Dawson had blown for a pen it would still not be clear and obvious mistake.
