Scout Notes

Tierney injury latest as Smith Rowe and Aubameyang impress in Gameweek 9

We begin our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Arsenal v Aston Villa.

ARSENAL 3-1 ASTON VILLA

  • Goals: Thomas Partey (£5.0m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m), Emile Smith Rowe (£5.4m) | Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Smith Rowe, Aubameyang | Leon Bailey (£6.4m)
  • Penalties misses: Aubameyang
  • Penalties saves: Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m)
  • Bonus: Smith Rowe x3, Martinez x2, Partey x1

IN-FORM AUBAMEYANG

A dominant Arsenal display against Aston Villa saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m) continue his fine form, as he bagged a goal and assist in Gameweek 9.

As a result, it’s now five attacking returns in the last six Gameweeks for the Gunners captain, a period which has also seen him produce 35 FPL points.

However, tonight’s six-point return could easily have been more, as despite converting the rebound, his initial penalty was saved by the impressive Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m), and combined with a second-half yellow card, ensured that he narrowly missed out on bonus.

SMITH ROWE SHINES

Lining up in a 4-4-2 formation, Arsenal ran out deserved 3-0 winners and were at their best on the break, with Emile Smith Rowe (£5.4m) in particular thriving.

Featuring on the left of the midfield four (no. 10 below), the youngster produced his second double-digit haul of the campaign, and completed more passes on the night than any other player on the pitch.

Arsenal’s average position map v Aston Villa in Gameweek 9

Elsewhere, Thomas Partey (£5.0m) had earlier opened the scoring with a glancing header from a Smith Rowe corner, having seen his volley earlier in the match cannon off the bar, while Bukayo Saka (£6.4m) put in an encouraging shift on the wing.

After tonight’s win, Arsenal are now unbeaten in six Premier League games, with Leicester City (a) up next in Gameweek 10.

INJURY LATEST

Kieran Tierney (£4.9m) missed out tonight due to a bruised left ankle, which certainly doesn’t sound too serious, though we await further updates from the club regarding the severity of the injury.

Elsewhere, while initial reports suggested that Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) was replaced after 67 minutes with a knock, Mikel Arteta confirmed in his post-match interview that it was in fact only tiredness.

“He worked really hard, he hasn’t played many minutes, he’s not played any internationals and he’s lacking a little bit of that resilience to finish the games. But it doesn’t matter, the time he was on the pitch he was terrific.”

BAILEY ON THE WATCHLIST

After a dismal first-half showing, which saw Villa fail to register a single effort on goal, they improved after the break, which coincided with Dean Smith reverting to a back-four system.

As a result, his team looked far more comfortable, with substitutes Leon Bailey (£6.4m) and Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m) making a real impact off the bench.

Both players were key in adding more energy, and will now surely be pushing for a start against West Ham United (h) next weekend, as Smith’s troops look to get back on track after three defeats in a row.

VILLA SET-PIECE WOES

Villa conceded from another set-piece tonight, and looked awkward throughout defending dead-ball situations.

Having thrown away a two-goal lead against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend in similar fashion, it’s becoming a worrying theme for Dean Smith’s side.

However, that could be good news for Tomas Soucek (£5.9m) owners in Gameweek 10, with West Ham United up next.

“It was a very poor first half. Not recognisable as a Villa team we have come to know. They deserved what they got. We got dominated physically. If we had got through the half at 1-0 I would have fancied us, but 2-0 was hard to get.

We knew Arsenal would start strong. I’d love to say it was the system and personnel but we just didn’t play well. Didn’t win enough balls, weren’t good enough on the ball. I’ll accept the second half all day long but the first half was not good enough.” – Dean Smith

Arsenal XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tavares, Saka, Sambi Lokonga (Maitland-Niles 73), Partey, Smith Rowe, Aubameyang (Martinelli 90+1), Lacazette (Odegaard 68)

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Konsa, Tuanzebe (Bailey 45), Mings, Cash, McGinn, Luiz, Targett, Buendia (Ramsey 68), Ings (El Ghazi 77), Watkins

Alonso, Havertx & CHO. Took -8 for the latter two. GW rank of 7.8 million atm.

My FPL season is highly depending on the outcome at Stamford Bridge later.

ESR seems like a player who will frustrate a few people, all season long. In the 9 games this season all of his points have been returned in just 2 games and I'm sure many people had him on their benches for this return. Seems to me like he'll be a more expensive, but more rotation prone version of Soucek last season, you don't want to bench him as it might be the week he scores, but chances are he will blank when you do start him.

      • 11 Years

Play him in home games, and some select away games. This guy is some footballer but agree FPL wise not consistent. Worth it for the hauls though at such a bargain price.

ESR has played 90 mins in 7 out of 9 games, the other 2 he played 60 and 30 mins…where are you getting “rotation prone” from? And if anything after that performance he certainly won’t be rotated by Arteta anytime soon. You’re frustration is understandable though lol it’s coz you don’t own him haha

      1. Thomas Magnum
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Why would I be frustrated? Preferably I like to pick players who return more often than 2 times every 9 games, lol. And look at arsenals attacking options, once the fixtures start getting congested he’ll either be rotated or will play deeper. You get what you pay for though

        1. FantasyClub
          • 3 Years

You said he was rotation prone, I was simply asking how you came to that conclusion when he actually isn’t

            • 8 Years
            2 years, 5 months ago

Maybe I should’ve written the op better but yes I believe that once the fixtures start getting congested he will be prone to the odd rotation due to the depth that Arsenal have in attack

    3. FPL Theorist
      • 4 Years

Soucek was actually easy for managers who actually bothered to look at the set piece defence stats of every opponent when deciding whether to play him. Surprisingly few people used these stats.

        Yeah right

Name the teams with poor set piece defence where Soucek scored a set piece goal. There are two of them 🙂

        1. FPL Theorist
          • 4 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

Palace and Leeds are the ones that come to mind.

I only benched him for his goal in GW12 -- caught all his other returns. There was one other goal prior to that where I missed it due to not owning him at the time.

I did plenty wrong last season, but Soucek was certainly one of the bright spots.

          1. pingissimus
            • 5 Years
            2 years, 5 months ago

Leeds and Palace are the only two I believe

Not arguing that he isn't a good pick against ropey set piece defence but hoping to use those stats to predict goals is chancy. You'd get just 2 of his 4 set piece goals I think - perhaps 3. But you'd miss the other 7!

Slightly randomly I've just cut off last season at around gameweek 25 and hit 8 of his goals. Just plying him every week for those week got you a goal every third game. Play him for the last third of the season and you got a goal every 6 games. That coincided with Lingard just about.

            Always another possible explanation.

I think he's one of the first names on the teamsheet, if not the first. Ødegaard's recent form also strengthens his position in the team as he can play wide or 10.

He's a very good player, but stats and eye test-wise, he's not all that. Looks to be an assist the assister type and is very much a team player without that selfish streak. Doesn't come close to Mbeumo as an FPL pick imo.

That said, he does have some set pieces which improves his appeal, so in isolation he's a decent pick at that price, it's just that there are players who I'd get ahead of him in that range (Mbeumo, Townsend).

      1. Thomas Magnum
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

Well written, I feel he would be a perfect option at 5.0 but at 5.4 he just feels a little too much or not good enough to be picked ahead of those you mentioned, maybe he will be eventually though

    5. LE CHARO

As someone who's had him from GW1, missed his haul vs Spurs, and sold him on wildcard this GW, I couldn't agree more with the first part of your comment.

I disagree with the second though, he is totally nailed, the only game he didn't start this season was because he was ill during the week and barely trained with the team, yet he still came on. Arteta seems to have found the right direction and the right players to lean on and ESR is definitely one of them.

At that price, I think he is an excellent pick for those with 3 premium players who need multiple 5.5-6 M mids.

I guess Villa will roll with 4-4-2 in next game, dont think it will improve their defense anyway. Need a proper DM to protect that defense.

Not a proper DM imo, more like a CM. I guess they have only Nakamba who can do that job.

        ----------Nakamba
        --------McGinn-Luiz
        Bunedia-Watkins-Bailey

The above looks a better setup to me for attack as well as defense but that would mean benching one of Watkins and Ings every week.

Craig Pawson and Michael Oliver (who is actually a decent ref) should be totally embarrassed by the Arsenal penalty at the end of the first half. Everything about that was wrong. Wasn’t even a foul. It was an obvious dive, and half time should have been blown before the VAR review (in which case the half would have ended immediately after the safe). Total joke.

      Cmon, now.
It is hardly a shocker. We've seen the same given plenty of times before.

As for half time being blown immediately after the save, well that would just be incompetent.

Agreed. Targett came from behind but without touching Lacazette, he toe poked the ball...and then a delayed dive from Lacazette.
I really do not understand how that was given after VAR.

I actually bought him in last week with the whole Son thing. The theory was right - Liverpool’s attack is ridiculous.

I’m not sure that Firmino is 100% ahead of Jota (though I do think he is). 30mins of Jota is pretty good most weeks.
      I think he’s as good/better than any City/Chelsea attacker.

I’m hopeful this week it pays off. But wouldn’t be surprised moving him next week - will have up 8.7.

    Good morning DZ.

    What's everyone's thoughts on Bailey?
I'm a fan of the performances he has shown so far. Just not 100% fit or nailed.

Surely he will be nailed soon?

    Thanks.

He has looked injury prone till now, gametime will probably be managed for next couple of games. Should be nailed when fully fit.

Don’t thank me too soon 😉

He’s still fairly punty - not a lot to go on if you’re looking at stats.

Amused that he snuck onto the scout picks team. He was an afterthought mention in just a couple of scout squads at the start of the week.

Not expecting his stats to be great with the defences he's faced, tbh

I might still end up with Toney next GW instead. The Burnley game will show me Toney's role in the easier games. I miiiiiiiiight miss a haul for this, but oh well 🙂

Which FT would be more powerful for next GW with 2.8 ITB?

    A. Locadia => Toney and bench Gallagher vs ManCity
    B. Semedo => TAA

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years

      Both?

          2 years, 5 months ago

Oh yeah! Forgot the money part

          TAA then

As much as I want to advise Gallagher to Mbeumo for -4 (if not in your team already), Palace fixtures shoot up from GW11. Mbeumo should get more points though

      2. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

I mean, both can easily come up in captaincy conversation:

Brighton barely concede many, but don't score many either. This is good for TAA in different ways

Burnley defence has fallen apart so far, and Toney is talismanic for Brentford via assists to Mbeumo and hopefully more freedom for him from his hold-up role in the easier games

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

Wouldn't take a hit to bench Livra vs Watford

Or even bench Alonso for free

Maybe just Toney, then? Play Alonso with Livra first sub?

The only reason I'll agree with this is that there's someone you really want for Alonso, mid and long term, not just a rush to get rid of him

That might turn out to be TAA or Pinnock himself, so I see the point. May I see the full team?

              • 5 Years

Okay. I see it now. If Alonso misses out, you're down to TAA Livra White, and White isn't wanted vs Leicester

I'd take that hit, then. But I'd also start TAA Alonso Pinnock, with Livra as first sub

Tuchel didn't dump Alonso completely last season, as good as Chilwell was. I don't think he'll do that this season either. And precedent says they don't get subbed on... So roll the dice and have Livra come in if you lose that bet, I think

Given the amount of transfers in, it's almost inevitable he blanks anyway. That'll be the end of his hot streak and he'll go on to blank in the next 10 gameweeks.

I held off too, similar reasoning but I rolled the transfer so I could have 2 FT for this coming week, which would give me more flexibility and allow me to shift Benrahma as well.

As per my post further below, it currently opens up a potential move to Son and Auba, although I’d have to do that early this week to avoid price rise on either of them as I have the exact money for it now.

Get the feeling Vardy will go on a barren run as soon as I get him, if I get him, as that is what always happens to me with Vardy.

It is mad how 16 point last night has almost halved my rank. A den of mediocrity around me.

My 1pt haul saw me fall 27,000 places. Mad world alright.

Sorry, but I’m going to Wang Chung tonight.

Now this is interesting, well, for me anyway!

Have 2FT and exactly enough to do:

Benrahma and Ronaldo to Son and Aubameyang.

That does look rather tempting, I must say.

No, I found it interesting too.

        Thank you.

This is my move of choice at the moment, but I have exactly the right money for it now, so cannot afford either of them to rise in price.

Do you think I should do it after Sunday’s round of games, or wait until after the EFL cup games and hope neither has risen in price?

        Still have WC too.

I love an early trade, but you know the risks. Exciting moves though.

At the start of the GW I was sure that one of Cancelo, Walker, James or Foden will be benched. Now that ESR is waiting first on the bench I'm sure there's just no way they wont start 😆

That would truly be a tragedy.

In a similar position. Just waiting for James' 1 min cameo...

James won't start so don't worry. Start worrying when his touchline warmup intensifies in the 85th minute.
