FPL Gameweek 9 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned

There were huge Fantasy Premier League (FPL) hauls aplenty on Saturday, with Phil Foden, Mason Mount and Joshua King all registering three attacking returns in comprehensive victories for their sides and two Chelsea defenders supplementing their clean sheets with goals.

Our usual, more detailed Scout Notes will follow for all of the day’s games but in the meantime, our resurrected Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 9 fixtures.

You can read about the Friday night match between Arsenal and Aston Villa here.

INJURIES AND BANS

FPL Gameweek 9 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned 7

Raphinha (£6.7m) is an injury concern for Leeds United’s plum-looking Gameweek 10 clash against Norwich City, having limped out of the Whites’ draw with Wolves.

The Brazilian was seen on crutches and wearing a protective boot in the aftermath of that game, with Marcelo Bielsa unable to offer us much after full-time.

“He received a knock, we don’t know the extent or gravity of the injury.” – Marcelo Bielsa on Raphinha

There was at least a more positive update from the player himself, who said he was “fine” in comments posted on social media this evening.

Kalvin Phillips (£4.8m) was back on the bench at Elland Road but Marcal (£4.6m) missed the game for the visitors, even if his calf injury doesn’t sound serious and he could be back for Gameweek 10.

Ralph Hasenhuttl was also optimistic of goalscorer Armando Broja’s (£5.0m) chances of recovering from an ankle knock in time for the trip to Watford.

“I hope so. It doesn’t look too bad, hopefully. It will take a few days [for him to recover], I think. He is not allowed to play [against Chelsea] on Tuesday anyway, so we’re okay. He is a threat for us, definitely. He is helping our team.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on Armando Broja

N’Golo Kante (£4.9m) and Raheem Sterling (£10.7m) sat out wins for Chelsea and Manchester City as precautions.

Fresh from a double-digit haul at Goodison Park, Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m) will miss Gameweek 10 after picking up his fifth booking of the season today.

GAMEWEEK 9 TAKEAWAYS

LIVRAMENTO IS THIS YEAR’S LUNDSTRAM?

Tino Livramento (£4.3m) isn’t an ‘out of position’ defender in the mould of John Lundstram but he’s providing similar value from a £4.0m starting price, with Saturday’s goal against Burnley meaning that he has banked an attacking return or clean sheet in five of the last six Gameweeks. This was no fluke, either, as he registered three shots and created another three chances against the Clarets, hitting the post with another effort.

Among £4.5m-and-under defenders, Livramento is second to and only four points behind Shane Duffy (£4.4m). And while Livramento’s ever-present starter status remains intact, Duffy was an unused substitute in Brighton’s loss to Manchester City. It was likely a ‘horses for courses’ selection by Graham Potter, with the Irishman’s lack of pace probably a consideration, but Adam Webster (£4.4m) made his comeback from injury on the bench and Tariq Lamptey (£4.4m) produced an eye-catching cameo to further the medium-term concerns about Duffy’s security of starts.

MOUNT AND FODEN ON THE CRUSADE FOR MID-PRICE MIDFIELDERS

So much value is being offered by £6.0m-and-under midfielders this season (the eye-catching Maxwel Cornet (£6.0m) is now firmly on the radar in that price rung after his brace against Southampton) that it’s easy to overlook the options in the bracket above. But Phil Foden‘s (£8.0m) recent promise finally culminated in a massive 18-point haul at the Amex, with Mason Mount (£7.4m) topping even that with a hat-trick in Chelsea’s 7-0 win over Norwich City.

Foden’s strikes were somewhat fortunate given the deflections involved but he was nevertheless putting himself in positions to score in his false nine role, topping the Gameweek 9 count for goal attempts, shots in the box and efforts on target.

Mount, meanwhile, can boast the best expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of any midfielder in Gameweek 9 so far, even if his mammoth FPL score comes with a big, fat, yellow-and-green caveat of it ‘only being Norwich’.

It wasn’t all success stories at this price point, however: Kai Havertz (£8.1m) – captained by 11% of the top 10k – somehow failed to get in on the act in that thumping win for the Blues.

CHELSEA’S DEFENDERS: HIGH RISK, HIGH REWARD

We were given another weekly reminder that Thomas Tuchel holds all the cards with our Chelsea defenders, with the German benching Marcos Alonso (£5.9m), Andreas Christensen (£5.1m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.2m) for the humping of the Canaries. Ben Chilwell (£5.7m), who now has 35 points in three Gameweeks, Antonio Rudiger (£5.8m) and Reece James (£5.5m) again demonstrated the upside of owning a member of the Blues backline, however, notching attacking returns to go with their clean sheets. It’s Newcastle and Burnley up next before the international break, so it’s an emphatic hold on most of our Chelsea defenders (Alonso perhaps aside) ahead of Gameweeks 10 and 11 – and all eyes on the teamsheet in the midweek EFL Cup clash with Southampton.

A GOOD DAY FOR BUDGET FORWARDS

Sub-£6.5m players have been responsible for eight of the 11 goals scored by forwards in Gameweek 9 so far.

Joshua King (£5.5m), back from injury and playing through the middle of Claudio Ranieri’s 4-2-3-1, scored a hat-trick, while Broja has two goals in as many starts and Hwang Hee-chan (£5.7m) made it four goals in six apperances since his Gameweek 4 debut with the opener at Leeds.

Both names currently on our Watchlist on the sidebar of our homepage, Hwang and Broja have another good-ish five Gameweeks’ worth of fixtures to come before we reach the hectic December period.

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 9

After what seemed like years of dormancy as a Fantasy asset, 2016/17 cult favourite King burst back onto the scene on Saturday. A total of four big chances and an xGI figure of 2.13 haven’t been beaten in Gameweek 9 so far, and he now has six attacking returns in his last four appearances for the Hornets.

Christian Benteke (£6.3m) matched King for big chances on Saturday, notching back-to-back goals in successive Gameweeks and only being denied a match-winner against Newcastle after a foul was spotted in the build-up. He is top for xGI among all Premier League players since his return to the Palace line-up in Gameweek 8.

Alonso played amazingly in the first 6 GWs. People even said he was keeping Chilwell out and bought him, even though Tuchel said Chilwell was on a mental health recovery break

Alonso WILL start in the league at some point. He's not dead to Tuchel. But now that both are fully fit, Tuchel has started this dude 3 EPL games in a row (+ UCL), with three goals in a row (Alonso's strength), and all wins. He wasn't second choice last season, but he's been relegated to that so far this season. Even if Chilwell's benched in the next game, it looks more like a rest than last season's rotation. I'd make the switch asap and accept any Chilwell rest as something similar to Dias last GW or Rudiger's injury

I'm thinking of Semedo -> Chilwell and keeping Alonso. My back line would be TAA, Cancelo, Alonso, Chillwell, Livramento. Would play both each week with either gallagher or livra 1st bench for the inevitable. This a waste of money?

Alright - I’m having not the best couple of weeks but I’m still around 100k at the. Of this GW (probably) so it’s not a bad start by any stretch.
Feel I need to get back to some long term planning and move slowly.

    Ramsdale
    Dias, Cancelo, Azpi, Livramento
    Salah, Havertz, Jota
    Vardy, Antonio, Jimenez

    (Foster, Raphinha, Brownhill, Duffy)

    1ft, 1.2 itb

    a/ Raphinha > Mbeumo
    b/ Raphinha > Mount
    c/ Havertz/Jota > Mount/ Foden

    a/ + Duffy > Chilwell (-4)

    Any thoughts?

I have an idea you might not want to hear, but here it is:

Raph + Duffy > D.Luiz + TAA, and hope Jota starts, with Livra first sub

Jota to Mount if you don't want the risk, but I wouldn't take that extra hit when Livra's this good

Havertz, Jota, Dias and Antonio might have to combine into Son + Brentford +/- 4.5 D at some point. I have no idea how/when exactly. Jim back to Antonio GW16

      https://www.livefpl.net/myteam should help with planning

Interesting. Haven’t been too keen on 2 cheap mids up until now - feels not ambitious enough. But that’s definitely something that could work.

          I'm on this from GW10:

          McCarthy
          TAA Cancelo Chilwell Rudiger
          Salah Son Foden
          Vardy Antonio Hwang

          Matthews | Livra D.Luiz Brownhill

Antonio to Toney for GW11. Hwang + Rudiger become Antonio + Dier later. McCarthy swings to Sa and then DDG long tern. Vardy to CR7 for that same fixture run. I'll keep adapting as my players keep getting injured: Raph and Tierney out for GW10. Planning is fun, but adapting is important if you do

I think the first thing you may want to ask yourself is, are you happy with your team structure? If not, then it might be time to roll a transfer and prepare to restructure with 2 FT.

The other thing to ask yourself from a long-term planning perspective is, are there any captains you want over the next 4-6 GW that you don't own? If so, how hard are they to get to and what is your plan to get there?

Guys, any thoughts on Duffy’s place now? Might be a one week benching but with others coming back could it become a regular sight.

Thinking Duffy>Chil tonight to beat the price rise. Would you do it or hold?

Rest of defence is TAA, Cancelo, James, Tino.

Is Jota, Benrahma, Marcal > Son, Foden, Chilwell (-8) too drastic? Haven’t taken a hit all season but now feels like the time.

    Sanchez

I would not get Havertz. 7 goals and he did nothing while being OOP. He is dropping like a rock, so will lose value too.

Thinking of switching to 4-4-2 long term.

    Something like this:

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell James
    Salah Son Foden Mbeumo
    Kane Toney

    Basically:
    GW11: Roll FT
    GW12: Antonio + Raphinha > Son + Davis

I'd have an awful bench of Livra, Brownhill, Davis, but that starting XI is plum and double Spurs for their run starting in GW12.

Yeah because there's a bit of rotation risk, I will probably end up sticking with the safer looking Raphinha + Toney over Son + Davis. It depends how frustrated I get with benching points which is gonna happen a lot with my current team.

Too much concentration on a handful of clubs for me - you've got 2 each from Chelsea, Spurs, City, Brentford & Liverpool + Ramsdale. You'll be relying on wins / CSs from 5 teams every week, and if more than one has an off day in the same GW you're in for a low scorer.

Worth WC to move from team A to B. Being on 12 (-4) so far with Team A could be think irrationally! 7 changes

    Team A

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Alonso
    Salah Raphinha Havertz Benrahma Mbeumo
    Kane Antonio

    Foster Livramento Semedo Scarlett

    Team B

I think D_D was referring to their GW9 score. 12 points with one hit so far

I agree with the 1 FT and held wildcard. Maybe Raph + Scarlett > Toney + 4.4 if confirmed out, and trust Livra to cover Alonso for one more GW, then address that fire next

No. I have only scored 12 points so far this week with team A and as took -4 net 8 points. Shocking but still have Livramento points to come in and TAA Salah (c) Mbeumo Benrahma Kane and Antonio to go

I'm thinking of Semedo -> Chilwell and keeping Alonso. My back line would be TAA, Cancelo, Alonso, Chillwell, Livramento. Would play both each week with either gallagher or livra 1st bench for the inevitable. This a waste of money?

I don’t like it. That’s what, almost 12m for one defender spot? If one of Chilwell or Alonso were nailed for all games would you pay 11-12m for them?

Doesnt work like that,TAA + fodder is 11.5 so this is similar.
And much better than TAA right now,Chilwell already got 3 goals in last 3.

It works exactly like that lol do you think Chilwell’s going to continue to scor a goal a game the rest of the season? If so, go for it

No its not, doesnt matter how much goals will Chilwell score not important at all.

Compare TAA(+fodder) points vs Chilwell and Alonso points combined both ~11.5M

You said yourself it’s TAA + fodder and then compared TAA to Chilwell + Alonso’s combined total? It’s 77 for TAA + Livramento but yeah, feels this is a bit of a waste of my time

Thanks for your thoughts. Assuming the strategy would be to play both alonso and chillwell every week and one will inevitably be benched vs play just Taa and if he doesn't play - livra comes in. So far this season the points would be 74 (CHE) vs 41+9 = 50 (Taa/Liv). Start of season $: 11.5 vs 11.5. Current $: 11.6 vs 11.8.

24 points up and quids in, I think there's a case for it.

You're almost betting against yourself, you just need to make the call and replace Alonso..... they will never both play, would would be better off with Chilwell and Rutiger at least some weeks they both play

Seems to be be loads of great options in Midfield but up front is tough to call.
2 FT and I want to drop Lukaku and Raphina and and bring in Mount + Forward (Can't keep Lukaku because I have Kovaic and James) but every time I bring in Vardy he does nothing and I just don't fancy anybody else (already have Antonio and Hwang) ....
Money is not an issue but I think Toney is probably the best option ....

Who do people fancy to score over next few weeks??

    1. waldo666
      • 13 Years

Toney looks a decent option, Broja could be good for the next few if he's taken Armstrong's spot (so long as passed fit). I'm looking at both as a potential Armstrong replacement.

Toney + Son should let you focus transfers on other spots for the next 10+ GWs, maybe even longer for Son

Ugh, Adam Armstrong has been my worst pick up this season by far. Got him in for this run so thinking of a straight swap to Broja who looks to have cemented a starting spot, assuming he's passed fit.

If Broja is out, worth keeping Armstrong or move him on anyway?

Probably worth moving especially if Broja is fit
JWP back next game I think as cup game counts as one of the suspended
I’m in the same boat below, but prefer Toney/Hwang unless I go Broja and play 5 midfield

Would you shift this team to 2 up top and 5 playable midfielders or leave Gilmour (for now) and target Mbuemo + Toney/Hwang to replace Armstrong/Gray/Raphinha (injury pending).

True to my name just done Dias Raphinha Havertz Jesus to Chilwell Son Foden Hwang.

No more hits until next week!

      Those exits are scary

Jesus could have easily outscored Foden this week, for instance. Foden had a slight touch to put in what was already possibly an own goal, and then had Jesus's goal skid slightly off his thigh

Raph has other direct replacements. Havertz and Dias could as easily haul in the next game as they blanked in this one

I'm a hit advocate myself, but this feels so... Dangerous

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger White Livramento
    Salah Havertz Raphinha Gray Sissoko
    Vardy Antonio Toney
    1FT 1.8 ITB

Feeling a little shell shocked after captaining Havertz today, and getting 1 point out of Cancelo and Raphinha.

Best move forward? Is Raph to Foden before the price rise too knee jerky?
