Raphinha and Marcal injury news as £4.5m FPL forward Gelhardt stars

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Leeds United v Wolverhampton Wanderers.

For a summary in brief of Saturday’s Premier League action, click here.

Leeds United 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goals: Rodrigo (£6.3m) | Hwang Hee-chan (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Joe Gelhardt (£4.5m) | Raul Jimenez (£7.6m)
  • Bonus: Rodrigo x3, Hwang x2, Stuart Dallas (£5.3m) x1

RAPHINHA AND MARCAL INJURY UPDATES

FPL Gameweek 9 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned 7

Raphinha (£6.7m) is an early injury concern for Leeds United’s plum-looking Gameweek 10 clash against Norwich City, having limped out of the Whites’ draw with Wolves.

The Brazilian was seen on crutches and wearing a protective boot in the aftermath of that game, with Marcelo Bielsa unable to offer us much after full-time.

“He received a knock, we don’t know the extent or gravity of the injury.” – Marcelo Bielsa on Raphinha

There was at least a more positive update from the player himself, who said he was “fine” in comments posted on social media. We should have a bonus press conference from Bielsa on Monday ahead of their EFL Cup clash with Arsenal, so we may hear more news on the Brazilian way in advance of next Saturday’s FPL deadline.

Kalvin Phillips (£4.8m) was back on the bench at Elland Road, meanwhile, but the 7.0%-owned Marcal (£4.6m) missed the game for the visitors, even if his calf injury doesn’t sound serious and he could be back for Gameweek 10.

AIT-NOURI ADVANCES

Coming in for Marcal was Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.3m), one of the early pre-season bandwagons that had long been forgotten about by the time Gameweek 1 kicked off.

Marcal had started all of Wolves’ first eight league matches at left wing-back but has flattered to deceive for some time, particularly in possession.

Bruno Lage’s change in that position at Elland Road was enforced by the Brazilian’s injury so it’ll be interesting to see who the Wolves boss plumps for against Everton next Monday, with the cut-price Ait-Nouri impressing at times yesterday.

The average position map below shows just how more advanced the young defender was compared to Nelson Semedo (£4.9m, number 22), with Ait-Nouri’s total of 21 final-third touches unbeaten by any of his teammates and three times more than Semedo racked up.

£4.5m GELHARDT MAKES HIS MARK

Leeds fans will know all about Joe Gelhardt (£4.5m) from his exceptional displays for the under-23s and he has finally got his chance in the Premier League in the last two Gameweeks, with his latest second-half cameo on Saturday showcasing his talents.

Racking up an eye-catching 11 penalty box touches in under half an hour (as many as any forward in Gameweek 9), he twice went close with rising efforts from inside the Wolves box before a weaving run brought about the stoppage-time penalty that Rodrigo (£6.3m) despatched in the absence of the injured Patrick Bamford (£7.8m) and the substituted Mateusz Klich (£5.5m).

The length of Bamford’s absence will likely determine how much game-time he gets but the Whites looked better with Rodrigo dropping deeper behind Gelhardt in the closing stages.

“In the initial minutes of the 30 that he played, he had very few contacts with the ball. But in the final 15 minutes, he got the penalty and he had options to score one or perhaps two goals. And I have the impression that him alongside Rodrigo in the second half created enough chances to win the game.” – Marcelo Bielsa on Joe Gelhardt

Armando Broja (£5.0m) looks head and shoulders above any £5.0m-and-under FPL forward at present but the teenage Gelhardt is one for the watchlist for FPL managers eyeing up a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 in the longer term.

HWANG/JIMENEZ LINK-UP DELIVERS AGAIN

Raul Jimenez (£7.6m) set up a Hwang Hee-chan (£5.7m) goal for the third time in as many Gameweeks, even if this latest ‘assist’ was of the Fantasy variety after the Mexican had an effort blocked.

Lage’s troops have scored seven goals over the last four Gameweeks, having found the net only twice before that.

And yet, Wolves’ attacking stats are otherwise on a downward trajectory. Their rate of shots in the last four matches is down over 9.0 per game, with shots in the box also markedly reduced despite encountering some favourable opposition – although big chances, perhaps significantly, haven’t been too badly affected:

Above: Wolves’ goal threat stats from Gameweeks 1-5 (left) and Gameweeks 6-9 (right). Most figures given are ‘per match’.

With four goals from just seven shots, Hwang’s goal conversion rate of 57.1% is unsustainable in the long term – so Wolves’ less gung-ho approach is something to monitor going forward.

Leeds XI: Meslier, Shackleton, Llorente, Cooper, Dallas, Klich (Gelhardt, 62), Struijk, James, Raphinha (Summerville, 54), Harrison (Roberts, 45), Rodrigo.

Wolves XI: Sa, Kilman, Coady, Saiss, Semedo, Moutinho (Neves, 89), Dendoncker, Ait-Nouri (Hoever, 83), Hwang, Traore (Podence, 75), Jimenez.

I caught that badly a few years ago, despite being 30-odd. Somehow a body built on 12-hour shifts on a laptop, zero exercise, stout and McCoy's crisps couldn't fight off a disease that mostly hits toddlers.

Ideally no but not sure what else to do. As it is currently I feel like I'm unlikely to ever start Saka, whereas having a benching headache at least gives me a chance to play the fixtures each week.

Thanks but lol sadly not. I only WC'd to this team last week, did fairly well, but currently on 19 with 6 to play and no bench jam to help me get Livra's 9 pointer off the bench. Some in my ML are on 60+ already with players left. Horrible week.

On the bright side, they conceded 4 so would be a zero anyway and very likely he would have got yellowish added to hiw score. I had same issue before Cancelo started, my single positive from this week so far. My season went bad the moment Lukaku and Ronaldo signed, i sat pretty with Vardy and Son, but then i did not commit properly to my own idea and succumbed to the luring that was Lukaku, and with some new issues coming up every week it is difficult to do the changes you really want. But still good, around 100k

    3. Ginkapo FPL

Honestly not really. The difference between -1pt and the standard 2pts is 3pts. In a typical 60 pt week this is 5% impact. Not getting cs's is 7%, not getting goals is 8% and so on.

Brought Havertz in for Sarr for a hit. Considering taking a hit to remove him and get Phil Foden in. Kid was phenomenal. Got others transfers planned down the line

    GW11: Antonio to Toney
    GW12: Auba to Kane

Should I pull the trigger and accept it was a bad decision that effevtively cost me 8 points or is it too kneejerky?

I feel you. Last week I wildcarded, it paid off (for once), I cut my rank by 200k and moved up in my mini leagues.

This week crashed straight back down to earth: 19 from 5 so far, no chance of getting Livra's 9 pointer off my bench and rivals are already on 60+ points! All ground seemingly lost. Sigh.

Feel your pain. Had decent finishes last two seasons (10k and 15k), started well this season (50k after GW3) but then a bad wildcard and injuries saw me fall outside 350k and I’m still outside 200k now.

Felt really down and frustrated about it but even small green arrows have cheered me after mediocre weeks the past fortnight. Concentrating more on my MLs and hopefully OR will follow.

Tough isn’t it? Sometimes sounds like you’re trying to humble brag (im not on the level of some people on here to do that!) but it’s genuinely how the game makes you feel. Frustration of a bad week so much stronger than the satisfaction of a good one

This feels like a week when those having a good season pulled away from stragglers like me.

I’m not miles off a team I’d be happy with (slow rebuild after a bad wildcard and loads of injuries) but the likes of Chilwell and Foden look even better now…

Early thoughts are Ronaldo to Toney and then either Marcal to Chilwell or Gallagher to Foden (or all three for -8).

    What do you reckon?

    1FT 1.0ITB
    Sanchez Steele
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger Livramento Marcal
    Salah Raphinha Gray Gallagher ESR
    Ronaldo Vardy Street

    Cheers!

As -8s go I don't mind it at all. It always has the potential to go wrong in the short term but if it gets you to a point where you're actually happy with your team, I'd go for it. It'd look close to a WC team if you made those moves.

Thank you. That’s what I’m thinking. If you look at hits in the medium to long term as well as short, they’re like an expensive wildcard. I’ve not taken any hits yet despite my issues and, having used them well last season, I feel they can be effective. Cheers!

Thanks. Yes, looking at routes to Son or Kane from GW12 ideally but might have my hand forced before then. Have you got them or looking to bring them in?

And I know what you mean about Toney. Might be that I play four or sometimes even five at the back.

Swapped Lukaku for Kane this week as I was short of getting to Son even if I went Vardy. Looking at Armstrong to Toney but as 3rd striker
I got Foden in for Jota last week so that’s been a success.
Not sure I want double Chelsea defence especially long term. Chilwell in great form, hopefully it continues for owners

Sounds like you’re well set up there. Good work with Foden.

Know what you mean about Chelsea but, looking further ahead, I wonder if I could move Rudiger to Shaw for example when United’s fixtures turn great.

Gw15 still a while away, but good to have a plan.
I started awful this season and was 1.6m rank coming into this gw but on 50 with Salah c Trent Antonio Kane to come so finally a good week (so far).
I like Dunk as an option, non Sanchez owner. Good fixtures for cs/bonus after Liverpool game.

Last GW I brought Havertz in for Mahrez and captained. Thought Havertz would use this opportunity and put in a good performance in a good fixture.

      Now, what to do?

      A) Sell for Mount (Havertz just a bad pick, fix it quick)
      B) Give him next GW and do Duffy to Chillwell or something else.

Morning all. Hope you've got plenty of players & goals for today.

        Sanchez
        TAA / Cancelo / Chilwell
        Salah / Jota / Raphinha* / Mbeumo
        Vardy / Antonio / Toney

        Steele // Livramento / White / Bissouma

        - Possibly okay with no LEE after NOR.
        - Jota becoming a little problematic
        - Worry about Bissouma later 😛

        Had planned for:
        A) Jota > Son

But with Foden still looking great, it's tempting. (Mount less-so, because NOR were absolutely awful.) So instead?
        B) Jota > Foden

If Raphinha is out, should I do:
        C) Raphinha > Foden

Maybe Son less of a priority because I can still get him in a week or two by selling Antonio (Broja vs. NOR) for example. I aim to keep Antonio for GW:11 AVL, but after that it is LIV, WOL, MCI, BHA, CHE before getting good again.

        Thoughts on what's best?

Looks decent. No major surgery needed.

Would just upgrade Bach to a 4.6 keeper and then change others in coming weeks.

Maybe Townsend first as Everton will suffer without Doucoure, then Ron out for Vardy/Kane/Auba unless he hits form.
