Vardy and Mbeumo injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Brentford v Leicester City.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s Premier League action, click here, while you can read up on Arsenal v Aston Villa, Leeds United v Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur via the links below.

BRENTFORD 1-2 LEICESTER CITY

  • Goals: Mathias Jorgensen (£4.5m) | Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), James Maddison (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Mathias Jensen (£4.9m) | Patson Daka (£7.1m)
  • Bonus: Tielemans x3, Jensen x2, Maddison x1, Christian Norgaard (£5.0m) x1

WHY WAS VARDY SUBSTITUTED AT HALF-TIME?

Vardy injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form 1

FPL’s joint-top scoring forward, Jamie Vardy (£10.8m), was substituted after 45 minutes in Gameweek 9.

Following the match, Brendan Rodgers revealed that the veteran striker had felt something in his knee during the warm-up, and was taken off after his manager felt he wasn’t moving right in the first-half.

“He felt something in the warm-up, something in his knee but he felt OK to give it a go.

You could see he wasn’t as dynamic or moving like he normally would be, so there was no point risking it further if he’s sore. So, we gave him a breather and brought Patson on.

We will have a look at that tomorrow (Monday).” – Brendan Rodgers

His replacement – Patson Daka (£7.1m) – followed up his Gameweek 8 goal and subsequent four against Spartak Moscow with an assist. When on the pitch, he generally delivers, and if we were to see a period on the side-lines for Vardy, Daka would surely see huge Fantasy interest ahead of Arsenal (h) and Leeds United (a).

CONSISTENT TIELEMANS

Today’s match also saw a wonderful strike by Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), who has now produced two goals and two assists in his last five appearances. Regardless of the system – Leicester have used a 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 in recent weeks – the Belgium midfielder is thriving, and after collecting maximum bonus, now sits joint-fifth amongst all midfielders for FPL points.

Statistically, amongst all sub-£7.0m midfielders, he ranks sixth for expected goal involvement (xGI), which is partly down to how many of his shots are coming from outside of the box. However, his creative numbers remain excellent.

Youri Tielemans xG shot map 2021/22

Sub £7.0m midfielders ranked by xGI 2021/22

Elsewhere, James Maddison (£6.7m) opened his 2021/22 account after a swift counter-attack, which Rodgers touched on after the game:

“He’s returning to the level, he’s been competitive when he hasn’t got the ball and that keeps the tempo. He showed some real moments of quality.

(The goal) will be really important for him. His job is to create and score goals. When you don’t have that, you do lose confident. We have been analysing his game, and what’s important for him to be at this level.

You can see in his last few performances, he’s gradually got better. I’m delighted for him.”

MBEUMO INJURY NEWS

As for Brentford, it was another encouraging display by Thomas Frank’s troops on Sunday, who dominated for large periods and narrowly won the xG battle.

Up until Tielemans struck, they were comfortably the better team, with Ivan Toney (£6.5m) having a goal controversially ruled out for offside and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) missing a good chance early on. However, the latter looked off the pace and was eventually hooked just before the hour mark. Frank later explained that the withdrawal of the ‘out of position’ midfielder was enforced.

“Bryan Mbeumo and Ethan Pinnock will be out for [the EFL Cup on] Wednesday. Hopefully, they are available for Saturday, it is too early to say yet.

“Bryan is a minor hamstring issue. It is not a big one because that would rule him out for the next couple of weeks. We took him off as it was the early stages so, hopefully, he can be available for Saturday.” – Thomas Frank

Despite today’s setback, the Bees’ are about to embark on an appealing run, as they rank top of our season ticker for ease of fixture between Gameweeks 10 and 16:

Toney and Mbeumo (if fit) are the standout attacking options, but the defence shouldn’t be overlooked. In fact, only Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea have a lower non-penalty xGC total so far this season:

“We deserved three points. We battered them for the first 45 minutes, there were only one team in the game.

I’m proud of the performance and the boys, and although we weren’t as dominant after half-time, and the only thing I can blame us for is the second goal.

We have to do better in terms of recovery and getting back in, but if we can replicate this game again and again, we’d win it seven times out of 10.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford XI: Raya, Zanka, Jansson, Pinnock (Ajer 45), Canos, Onyeka (Ghoddos 77), Norgaard, Jensen, Henry, Toney, Mbeumo (Forss 57)

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Amartey, Evans, Soyuncu (Vestergaard 68), Pereira, Tielemans, Soumare, Castagne, Maddison (Perez 78), Vardy (Daka 45), Iheanacho

B will suit it, seeing that you are going for 4 in the middle. Get manquillo for your last defence spot.

Have 2 ft and use one to do meslier > raya. Doesn't see other pressing issue except for raphinha. My lineup for gw 10

    Raya
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell Livramento
    Salah(C) Raphinha Gray
    Antonio Jimenez CR7
    Begovic Sarr Saiss Allan

How does this look? Might sit on it till friday and assess again.

GW10's fixtures are as good for the template as GW9. Maybe even slightly better

As usual, the main template problem is injuries. But a hit or two can fix those

Foden and Chilwell (and maybe Mount) should be around 10% owned by the next deadline. Welcome to the ever-evolving template, lads

    We go again 🙂

It was a precautionary measure to bring him off at half time, because the knee pain he felt in the warmup was hindering his sharp runs (his trademark)

This is as minor as it gets. Minor enough for the meds to let him play 45 minutes *after* discovering it

A scan today will confirm if anything serious happened though

I'm gonna guess you have a cheap mid who can fund TAA somehow. Or someone in front to Hwang

Taking punt, chasing ranks, hit madness Doesn't Work so far. Playing safe and boring, saving FT seems more rewarding.

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

If I didn't chase with hits, I'd be probably double or triple my current rank (which is 500k)

      Because of injuries, mind 🙁

I haven't gotten one haul off the bench. If my players miss out, a blanker comes in. If my first sub does well, everybody starts and someone gets injured or does badly

I'm aggressively chasing my own luck

So, other than Salah C, not much else is "safe" when injuries keep flying about and you need to somehow get the best replacement... While fixture blocks and team performances swing wildly

If there's a guaranteed way to be lucky in such a season, I'd love to hear it

Yeah Whenever i took hits, not because of injured players but for chasing ranks it turned out bad. Whenever i saved my FT, it turned out really useful

          • 5 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

          Oh okay. I understand that

But would you have been patient with Greenwood, Bruno, CR7?

Would the patient method have gotten Chilwell, Mount or Foden when the likes of Raph, Gray and Mbeumo were still okay? People have been patient with Alonso, for instance. Patient with Arsenal defence. Patient with Duffy. Someone even had Barnes for like 6 GWs here on the comments

It's a *very* fast season that's only being masked a bit now by the emergence of Salah permacap

The one lesson from GW9 is to cap nobody else, and many of us learnt that since GW7

Funnily enough, GW10 is not the time to sell either of them. 🙂 Spurs and Villa defences are good for both

My fear is that you're taking the wrong lessons from situations that are simply down to bad luck or just a bad beat. Havertz was the only player without a return in that game. Vardy got injured. Learn from things that were actually your fault

I wanted auba for ronaldo before this week. 30 seconds before deadline i joined the hype and brought vardy+havertz with a hit. Not anymore. Playing my own game is certainly better. Somehow i still managed to stay at 400 k.

The success and failure of the options selected will always belong to you. Not any hype, not any Twitter account.

Its a long term process and sooner or later, you will realize the same. We were all in this situation at some point in our FPL career. No room for blame game, enjoy the success and take the responsibility of your failure and move on...

Havertz wasn't really a punt. Many got him in purely because Lukaku and Werner were out. Even v Norwich very few considered getting him.

I considered benrahma as mess and havertz as punt, did -4 to bring him in, though fortunately Didn't cap havertz. Havertz+vardy gave me 4 points with vardy injured. While benrahma + ronaldo got 4+4. Now i would have 2 ft and 4 points more

Vardy got injured in the warmup, and his replacement got an assist. You could have gotten Mount instead of Havertz for very similar reasons (especially since Tuchel doesn't create much for his strikers) and this entire "lesson" would have turned on its head

Or you could have gotten Chilwell with the Vardy funds

It didn't work this time. Take it on the chin. Look forward to the next GW

Mbeumo should be a few days, maybe over a week... Maybe much longer, but I think that's unlikely. Wondering if T. Frank will change Toney's role now. That could be good for FPL 🙂

Raphinha is looking at Bamford's recovery timeline, imo. And just like Bamford, he considers it a minor issue because he won't need surgery, so he's "fine" with just painkillers, weight taken off the ankle by a protective boot and crutches, and lotsa bed rest to allow natural ligament healing. That's my, err, educated guess. We'll find out from Bielsa soon

Thinking of taking either Benrahma/Sarr out this week. Did a quick search and found out Villa has the 3rd worst xGA (understat) over the past 5 games! Any Villa fan has insights on this?

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years

      Wouldn't sell either this GW

The problem with players like these is that you probably missed the time to sell a few GWs ago, and would now sell for their one/two best games from a bad run

If you're selling, it has to be for a clear upgrade who you really want long-term (Foden for me), not a reaction to their blanks

I'd say the same for selling CR7 for GW10. We gave this warning for those losing Antonio for GW9, after the frustration of two blanks

      1. RAMZES666
        • 6 Years

Thinking of getting Foden as well but for Sarr. Watford doesn't look convincing in attack and Southampton are no jokes in defence too.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years

The unconvincing Watford just scored 5 under their new manager

Sarr's replacement for the haul part of the thriller, Dennis, is now suspended for this one game, so Sarr should be back on it

S'oton just conceded twice to Burnley's new boy

One of Foden's goals could have been an OG instead, the other was someone else's shot that he almost blocked inadvertently

The What If's are many here, and I'm not sure they're predictive enough for an immediate switch

Foden is a good long-term pick anyway, so I'd just close my eyes to it and accept any instant punishment as par for the course. Because, FPL 🙂

I'm sure this is a story shared by many already but if I'd have missed the deadline this week I would have scored 110 points. Instead I got 80 (-4).

Fine margins and massive point swings. Here's to a havertz hatrick next week.

I can't see where to go from here. Got a massive haul of 111 to launch me back up to OR 5K.

    BUT
everyone will perma-cap Salah now, so there's no advantage to be had.
I got Foden's haul and bought him when he was a differential - that won't be the case much longer.
I've had Livramento from the beginning - and caught most of his hauls including this GW - but now he's highly owned.
My final real differential is ESR. I left him on my bench this GW, and now he's being brought in in large quantities.
Otherwise, my defence of TAA and City and Chelsea defenders is par for the course.
My mid-price forward line is malfunctioning - but there are no stand-out options to jump onto.

So it seems to me going forward entails getting the same score as every other decent player. Damn.

You'll be doing that from a high rank, so consolidating and aiming for a good finish, this early already

Just like Son and Kane last season, there's the feeling that the watershed moment has happened

And now climbing from 500k without risky moves is a tough task for me, just like last season. Ah well

I feel it's far too early to play conservatively. It would be like taking a lead after 20 minutes then parking the bus. But the weird thing is, I now have no transfers I want to make, having taken quite a few hits to get in this shape. I even have a situation where I want to start all my 13 outfield players every week going forward. Of course, unforeseen circumstances will come up, just like the interminable injuries I've had to manage, but they will probably be dealt with by boring like-for-like replacements.

It's like Fish & Chips posted as I was typing, if he's captained Salah, he'd have got the same score as me. Next GW he and others WILL captain Salah, so we all end up with identically-strong squads.

      Most perma captain Salah anyway.

You just need to find an edge and the next haul that other don’t have …

      Jesus, Firmino, Hwang, Kane
      Mount, KDB, Kovavic, Mane
      Pinnock, Robbo, James

I've got no vacancies in defence. There's Sarr and my front 3 who are moveable, but of that lot, none look like upgrades, plus any incomer wouldn't get in my starting XI, otherwise, I'd have Mbuemo by now. I'll just need to wait for circumstances to change, then react.

Try to be boring and hold that position for now, BGW/DGWs is when you will make final push.

Having Trent and couple of differentials should still make a difference.

        • 11 Years

Yeah, I have to get boring now. I'm suggesting that the differentials that have launched me so high are no longer differentials - people have cottoned on.
Actually I suppose the secret is to spot the next differential bandwagon quickly and sell a popular pick as they fade. Not boring at all! I have an eye on selling Antonio before the masses, but not sure when.

          Exactly this.
People think that Jota rotate with only Firmino, this is wrong. He will share starts with both Firmino and Mane and Salah will also get one benching, probably around a Everton in gw 14. Mount is not playing 10 men a Norwich every week and Foden is possible to have alongside Jota if you want. Also, Foden scoring with his back inadvertently is not sustainable like Jota running in to a tap in from Trent.

      2. Jafalad
        • 14 Years

Agreed. Having a decent bench can justify his non-appearances. With the amount of goals LIV are scoring -esp away, Jota's speciality - he has earned a stay in my team.
I think play Jota in away games has to be the strategy.

T plays every minute and F is a rotation risk. But F has the higher ceiling. Comes down to how much risk you want and your bench cover.

Tielemans is a good player but he normally has spells of scoring goals, and this is his spell so might work or not. On the other hand, Foden when he starts will give you goals no doubt so its your bench which will be more important. Foden for me.

Is it the time to accept Bernardo as the current most nailed on City player and bring him in? He is not the type of fpl asset you want to buy but with the way he is playing, you would think he starts 90%+ of the games, and with the way he is playing, he will at least give you consistent assists and once in a while goals. Foden is the better option but you do know one bad game and he is on the bench with the talent City has all over the pitch. Or Bernardo is still a risk starting games?
