Vardy and Mbeumo injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Brentford v Leicester City.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s Premier League action, click here, while you can read up on Arsenal v Aston Villa, Leeds United v Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur via the links below.

BRENTFORD 1-2 LEICESTER CITY

  • Goals: Mathias Jorgensen (£4.5m) | Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), James Maddison (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Mathias Jensen (£4.9m) | Patson Daka (£7.1m)
  • Bonus: Tielemans x3, Jensen x2, Maddison x1, Christian Norgaard (£5.0m) x1

WHY WAS VARDY SUBSTITUTED AT HALF-TIME?

Vardy injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form 1

FPL’s joint-top scoring forward, Jamie Vardy (£10.8m), was substituted after 45 minutes in Gameweek 9.

Following the match, Brendan Rodgers revealed that the veteran striker had felt something in his knee during the warm-up, and was taken off after his manager felt he wasn’t moving right in the first-half.

“He felt something in the warm-up, something in his knee but he felt OK to give it a go.

You could see he wasn’t as dynamic or moving like he normally would be, so there was no point risking it further if he’s sore. So, we gave him a breather and brought Patson on.

We will have a look at that tomorrow (Monday).” – Brendan Rodgers

His replacement – Patson Daka (£7.1m) – followed up his Gameweek 8 goal and subsequent four against Spartak Moscow with an assist. When on the pitch, he generally delivers, and if we were to see a period on the side-lines for Vardy, Daka would surely see huge Fantasy interest ahead of Arsenal (h) and Leeds United (a).

CONSISTENT TIELEMANS

Today’s match also saw a wonderful strike by Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), who has now produced two goals and two assists in his last five appearances. Regardless of the system – Leicester have used a 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 in recent weeks – the Belgium midfielder is thriving, and after collecting maximum bonus, now sits joint-fifth amongst all midfielders for FPL points.

Statistically, amongst all sub-£7.0m midfielders, he ranks sixth for expected goal involvement (xGI), which is partly down to how many of his shots are coming from outside of the box. However, his creative numbers remain excellent.

Youri Tielemans xG shot map 2021/22

Sub £7.0m midfielders ranked by xGI 2021/22

Elsewhere, James Maddison (£6.7m) opened his 2021/22 account after a swift counter-attack, which Rodgers touched on after the game:

“He’s returning to the level, he’s been competitive when he hasn’t got the ball and that keeps the tempo. He showed some real moments of quality.

(The goal) will be really important for him. His job is to create and score goals. When you don’t have that, you do lose confident. We have been analysing his game, and what’s important for him to be at this level.

You can see in his last few performances, he’s gradually got better. I’m delighted for him.”

MBEUMO INJURY NEWS

As for Brentford, it was another encouraging display by Thomas Frank’s troops on Sunday, who dominated for large periods and narrowly won the xG battle.

Up until Tielemans struck, they were comfortably the better team, with Ivan Toney (£6.5m) having a goal controversially ruled out for offside and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) missing a good chance early on. However, the latter looked off the pace and was eventually hooked just before the hour mark. Frank later explained that the withdrawal of the ‘out of position’ midfielder was enforced.

“Bryan Mbeumo and Ethan Pinnock will be out for [the EFL Cup on] Wednesday. Hopefully, they are available for Saturday, it is too early to say yet.

“Bryan is a minor hamstring issue. It is not a big one because that would rule him out for the next couple of weeks. We took him off as it was the early stages so, hopefully, he can be available for Saturday.” – Thomas Frank

Despite today’s setback, the Bees’ are about to embark on an appealing run, as they rank top of our season ticker for ease of fixture between Gameweeks 10 and 16:

Toney and Mbeumo (if fit) are the standout attacking options, but the defence shouldn’t be overlooked. In fact, only Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea have a lower non-penalty xGC total so far this season:

“We deserved three points. We battered them for the first 45 minutes, there were only one team in the game.

I’m proud of the performance and the boys, and although we weren’t as dominant after half-time, and the only thing I can blame us for is the second goal.

We have to do better in terms of recovery and getting back in, but if we can replicate this game again and again, we’d win it seven times out of 10.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford XI: Raya, Zanka, Jansson, Pinnock (Ajer 45), Canos, Onyeka (Ghoddos 77), Norgaard, Jensen, Henry, Toney, Mbeumo (Forss 57)

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Amartey, Evans, Soyuncu (Vestergaard 68), Pereira, Tielemans, Soumare, Castagne, Maddison (Perez 78), Vardy (Daka 45), Iheanacho

Might have to play in central midfield the way we get injuries in that area, last year it was cb, this year it will be midfield. So, next year we bring in Raphinha and then ut will be our front 4 that gets injuries.. Lol

Klopp done this every year in the Liverpool derby, resting sine of his stars, one year it was Salah, another it was both Firmino and Mane, often because these derbys tends to be in a tight schedule and Klopp loves to introduce his other players to this derby, just gi check starting line up vs Everton at Goodison last seasons.

Don't see Klopp resting Salah in the league. Not a chance. He's scored in 7 games in a row. He's 4 short of Vardys record of 11 in a row. He could break that record v Everton.

Maybe Everton, maybe the fane after, point is he will be benched, but i would not mind anyway because he will get like 20 minutes and he will get something anyway. Klopp dont care about records but care about tiredness and physical well being, so the staff will tell him when it is smart to rest.

Yeah I know. Sorry not to explain myself better. Salah is king atm. He will want to be in this game and rotation related more to fixture pile ups. Now there is no fixture pile up.

I transferred KDB in GW9 for Bruno. Other options were either Son or Vardy, later using 2FTs.

Question: should I keep KDB or get rid of him?

I’m tempted by Scarlett to Gelhardt. You’d think that if Raph’s out, he’ll at least get another 30 mins, which should be plenty of time to brace vs Norwich

With head a bit more clear this morning after the weekend's disaster, think the advantage of falling to the bottom is, you feel a lot less pressure and start looking at the game from a fun filled perspective, which should've been the case in the first place.
Never reached past the 1m rank(1.1m right now) at any given point in the last three seasons. Just gonna take my calculated risks and try to enjoy the ride now 🙂

I can have a full house at the back from next week or so pending price changes. Thoughts on this setup?

    Raya Foster
    James Chilwell Trent Cancelo Livra
    Mount Foden Salah Son Brownhill
    Vardy Broja Hwang

Can go 442 rotataing Broja and Hwang for best fixtures. 343 with James autosub for Chilwell. Bench pretty decent as well for no shows etc.

    1. Dammit_182
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

Chilwell, TAA, Cancello are the best 3 right now. James added in with the beautiful cover which is livra gives you potential for some mega defensive hauls.

Mount, foden, salah & son looks great. Again, some rotation risk but looks great.

Up top your a tad light and as someone who just got rid of Antonio he is a glaring omission and despite the fixtures it feels bad not owning him. Vardy has some nice fixtures and has been performing (though above his xg) and keeps the money there to move to most other strikers easily.

I like Hwang - I got in Jimenez and he’s been great but Hwang is doing it for quite a bit cheaper.

Borja if he plays regularly is another gift. I’ve got Toney in his spot and frankly Southampton have started to break their attacking duck and for cheap you get another good asset.

In short love the midfield and defence, strikers are a tad light but as you said, they are your rotation paring and you get 2 ‘proper’ playing subs with Brownhill 3rd bench.

Overall I like it but would just think about leaving Antonio out.

I went Gray to Foden but yeah Havertz showed nothing to make keeping worthwhile. Mind if Lukaku stays out and with everyone selling then H would become a differential. Probably why I am still keeping CR7, lol :).

Early thoughts on this lot? would you save here or take a hit to get Foden in for Raphinha if he's out?

    Got 1FT and 0.4 ITB

    Foster
    Azpi TAA Cancelo
    Salah ESR Raphinha Mbeumo

Similar dilemma, leaning towards moving Raph for Foden for a hit if the former is out. But I also need to get rid of Ronaldo

I've got a decent bench if Raphinha is out and could save and get Toney and Foden in for free next week for Antonio and Raphinha, just not sure if I want to get rid of Antonio though, rather loose Jimenez despite the fixtures.

        1. Pompel
          • 10 Years

That's a tricky one. Wouldn't want to lose Antonio - would rather downgrade Jimenez. But I think it won't hurt you too much to wait one week - Foden not likely to haul every week.

Problem with dropping CR7 is unless the trans is for another premium up front, once you spread those funds it's very hard to get back to Lukaku if you wanted.

          • 10 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

Yeah , I know, so it's a long term strategy move. But right on the money to get Vardy + Foden, so could do Vardy to Lukaku further down the line if the latter shows some form. But also have to plan for Kane ot Son from GW12.

Lack of 'premium' option when Lukaku was off, should probably have gone cheap

Same here. Was planning on saving FT even with Lukaku ruled out but the Jimenez doubts pushed me to get Vardy in and hence cemented the Livra-points on my bench. Well well, the red was "only" 50k after all players but the Liverpool duo Salad and TAA disappointed.

    DDG
    TAA Cancelo Chill Christ (Livra)
    Salah Foden Raph (Gall Gilm)
    Kane Antonio Toney
0.2 bank, 0FT (used it on Kane already)

General plan will be DDG down to a cheaper GK (thinking either the plucky Brentford, or Guaita who always comes good every year) and drafting in James for Christ to complete the backline.

Still don't think James is a good FPL pick long-term. The cameos are an absolute nightmare. Christensen still a good pick as you can be confident he won't get subbed on unless there's an injury.

Any insight on when Guaita will come good? Had him for 5 weeks now and barely had a save point out of him.

    Ramsdale
    TAA | Cancelo | Livramento
    Salah | Raphinha | Gray | Mbeumo
    Ronaldo | Vardy | Jiménez

    Steele | Duffy | B Williams | Allan

    1FT, 1.1 ITB.

Bit of a mess this, had to hold Ronaldo last week due to Lukaku's injury.
B Williams to Christensen is an option to get a Chelsea defender (had Rudiger before his injury). 0.1 short of doing Duffy to R James.

Definitely, a wait and see injury-wise as that will force my decision making, however, any overall thoughts?

Got to lose Ronaldo really and it's tough when injuries keep cropping up and only having 1 FT. Think you just got to bite the bullet.

      Antonio/Toney to free up funds
Williams to Chilwell with the spare cash

Hoping Duffy gets his place back and it was just a tactical switch on Sat

Yeh, it's a tough one this. Spurs & Watford in his next 3 & he did have the ball in the back of the net.
But yes, to get a Chelsea defender other than Christensen/cheaper will require a hit.
It may be a watch of what happens at Manchester United as a whole.

Duffy, I'm not convinced will come back in for Liverpool but I would be surprised if he didn't play against Newcastle. Should he not feature in the next two then that will most likely be when I trade.

        Cheers for your thoughts.

Holding Ronaldo probably a blessing in disguise , as I guess you would otherwise have captained Lukaku. That was was my plan at least 😉 . Tough call whether to keep Ronaldo one more GW though

Still got Chelsea and City to come but Spurs and Watford in the next 3 aren't exactly bad.
He did also have the ball in the back of the net.

I think it will probably be a hold as there will probably be more pressing issues.

There's also an argument that post gw13 he will be a strong asset to have.
I also don't think he will continue along this trajectory, he's too good of a player.

With so many mid priced strikers emerging and Salah looking like a permanent captain. Is it worth dropping the premium striker slot?

Lukaku injured, Vardy now injured, Kane out of form. You could put more funds in defence and midfield. Just a thought.

          Hwang -maybe, jury still out
Broja - injury prone, Saints not scoring many
Wilson - injury waiting to happen, plays for Championship side
          Benteke - really ?
Toney - overhyped , especially round here. Talisman with 2 goals in 9 games.
          Ikenacho- yes
          Jimenez - maybe

Whilst you are in progress the FH will take on rises and fallers. But when the GW is complete your team will revert to normal and the price movement will relate to your old side.

If you FH now, you get the team back from GW9 including price changes incured before the deadline. Foden will not be in your team if you transfered him in before the FH.

I'm going McCarthy > Sá > DDG, then Vardy > CR7, then Son > Greenwood. Salah > Son for AFCON

Bad form doesn't mean they're now relegation candidates. See what happened with Arsenal

This is where those who can see through the reactionary headlines make gains

Heck, I wouldn't sell CR7 before Spurs if I still had him. Man U defence is horrible (for now), but their attack is still around top 5

Morning all. 1FT & 0.2m ITB. Which one or maybe two are priority to get out? Benrahma, ASM or Raph if out for a while?

    Sanchez
    TAA - Livramento - Rudiger
    Benrahma - Son - Salah - Raphina
    ASM - Vardy - Antonio

    White - Marcal - Brownhill

    1. Eze Really?
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

IMO Raphina has been popular due to eye test and last year's performances. Clearly undervalued considering these points but is he? He is now playing in a poor Leeds side compared to last year. His ceiling is not that high and he has no assist potential since Bamford's injury. On top of that he is in the Brazil side. He came off injured and a wait and see on how serious. A long winded way of saying get ESR.

Any early thoughts on what to do here? Would like Foden but only way really is to take a -4/ or move Son on.

    Sanchez
    Trent - Cancelo - Rudiger
    Salah - Son - ESR - Gray
    Antonio - Toney - Vardy

    Steele - Livra - Sissoko - B Williams

Hmm, only brought Vardy in this week haha. Son I feel is the asset to own at Spurs, but if City play like they did at the weekend, Foden is the man to own.
