Vardy and Mbeumo injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Brentford v Leicester City.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s Premier League action, click here, while you can read up on Arsenal v Aston Villa, Leeds United v Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur via the links below.

BRENTFORD 1-2 LEICESTER CITY

  • Goals: Mathias Jorgensen (£4.5m) | Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), James Maddison (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Mathias Jensen (£4.9m) | Patson Daka (£7.1m)
  • Bonus: Tielemans x3, Jensen x2, Maddison x1, Christian Norgaard (£5.0m) x1

WHY WAS VARDY SUBSTITUTED AT HALF-TIME?

Vardy injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form 1

FPL’s joint-top scoring forward, Jamie Vardy (£10.8m), was substituted after 45 minutes in Gameweek 9.

Following the match, Brendan Rodgers revealed that the veteran striker had felt something in his knee during the warm-up, and was taken off after his manager felt he wasn’t moving right in the first-half.

“He felt something in the warm-up, something in his knee but he felt OK to give it a go.

You could see he wasn’t as dynamic or moving like he normally would be, so there was no point risking it further if he’s sore. So, we gave him a breather and brought Patson on.

We will have a look at that tomorrow (Monday).” – Brendan Rodgers

His replacement – Patson Daka (£7.1m) – followed up his Gameweek 8 goal and subsequent four against Spartak Moscow with an assist. When on the pitch, he generally delivers, and if we were to see a period on the side-lines for Vardy, Daka would surely see huge Fantasy interest ahead of Arsenal (h) and Leeds United (a).

CONSISTENT TIELEMANS

Today’s match also saw a wonderful strike by Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), who has now produced two goals and two assists in his last five appearances. Regardless of the system – Leicester have used a 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 in recent weeks – the Belgium midfielder is thriving, and after collecting maximum bonus, now sits joint-fifth amongst all midfielders for FPL points.

Statistically, amongst all sub-£7.0m midfielders, he ranks sixth for expected goal involvement (xGI), which is partly down to how many of his shots are coming from outside of the box. However, his creative numbers remain excellent.

Youri Tielemans xG shot map 2021/22

Sub £7.0m midfielders ranked by xGI 2021/22

Elsewhere, James Maddison (£6.7m) opened his 2021/22 account after a swift counter-attack, which Rodgers touched on after the game:

“He’s returning to the level, he’s been competitive when he hasn’t got the ball and that keeps the tempo. He showed some real moments of quality.

(The goal) will be really important for him. His job is to create and score goals. When you don’t have that, you do lose confident. We have been analysing his game, and what’s important for him to be at this level.

You can see in his last few performances, he’s gradually got better. I’m delighted for him.”

MBEUMO INJURY NEWS

As for Brentford, it was another encouraging display by Thomas Frank’s troops on Sunday, who dominated for large periods and narrowly won the xG battle.

Up until Tielemans struck, they were comfortably the better team, with Ivan Toney (£6.5m) having a goal controversially ruled out for offside and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) missing a good chance early on. However, the latter looked off the pace and was eventually hooked just before the hour mark. Frank later explained that the withdrawal of the ‘out of position’ midfielder was enforced.

“Bryan Mbeumo and Ethan Pinnock will be out for [the EFL Cup on] Wednesday. Hopefully, they are available for Saturday, it is too early to say yet.

“Bryan is a minor hamstring issue. It is not a big one because that would rule him out for the next couple of weeks. We took him off as it was the early stages so, hopefully, he can be available for Saturday.” – Thomas Frank

Despite today’s setback, the Bees’ are about to embark on an appealing run, as they rank top of our season ticker for ease of fixture between Gameweeks 10 and 16:

Toney and Mbeumo (if fit) are the standout attacking options, but the defence shouldn’t be overlooked. In fact, only Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea have a lower non-penalty xGC total so far this season:

“We deserved three points. We battered them for the first 45 minutes, there were only one team in the game.

I’m proud of the performance and the boys, and although we weren’t as dominant after half-time, and the only thing I can blame us for is the second goal.

We have to do better in terms of recovery and getting back in, but if we can replicate this game again and again, we’d win it seven times out of 10.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford XI: Raya, Zanka, Jansson, Pinnock (Ajer 45), Canos, Onyeka (Ghoddos 77), Norgaard, Jensen, Henry, Toney, Mbeumo (Forss 57)

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Amartey, Evans, Soyuncu (Vestergaard 68), Pereira, Tielemans, Soumare, Castagne, Maddison (Perez 78), Vardy (Daka 45), Iheanacho

Shame Klopp decided to go easy on United after 5-0 up, could have done with few more points especially form TAA.

Hola chaps, would appreciate some thoughts.

I'll have 6.3 itb when transferring out Marcal (1.8 before). My current defence is Azpi, Cancelo and Livra.

Do I transfer in Marcal for say Chiwell, Rudiger or Cresswell? or do I hold to try get Trent back in as originally planned? Also have to worry about Raph and Vardy yellow. Teams pretty good otherwise to hold transfer.

Yeah, Issue is it involves a hit-either Raph or Vardy-I could potentially just put in Chilwell this week for Marcal and transfer out Azp next week.

Kind of wish I had kept him on my WC a couple of weeks ago but there was just so much choice! Essentially went Foden over him which obviously worked out fine but definitely looking to have both very soon,

Yeah, I was planning to do Jota to Foden but resisted because I had other fires to put out. Both seem a good bet but it means I will miss out on Mbeumo with my current set up

If I abandon the premium forwards (currently Vardy in my team and have had similar disappointments with Ron and Rom) and go down to Antonio I could upgrade 5th mid (Brownhill) to Jota. Maybe some benching headaches but I'm increasingly in favour of a strong bench. Annoying when you miss the bench points (as I did with Livra this week) but nice to feel you actually have a chance of bench points when you need them...

It’s said time and time again, don’t do early transfers. Always have a bit of patience and wait for as much info before doing moves as possible. If you have an injury at the end of the week then make them a priority to move out, if not use the transfer for planned improvements on the squad.

    Raph/Zaha->Foden/ESR (-4)
    Jimmy/Zaha->Foden/Toney (-4)

Most of us got it wrong. I immediately corrected my mistake and changed to Mount this GW after watching the game. Havertz really didn't look like to score, lack of confidence. Mount looked lively. Didn't think twice to replace after watching the game. Maybe 1 goal would bring back the confidence to Havertz.

I know it wasn't probably a sensible move, but now that it's done I can only try to find the positives in this move, at least got 0.1 from this move last night and will probably rise once again before the GW.

I was totally set on Mount on my WC (every draft) until the Lukaku injury caused me to switch to the OOP wonder. He wasn’t great, but I don’t think it’s beyond the realms of possibility roles could be reversed against Newcastle. If on a wc, how would we shape a team now?

    Ederson Foster
    Cancelo chilly James Trent livra
    Mbeumo Salah jota mount foden
    Toney Antonio Borja

    1.2itb

Too much rotation and only one premium?

James ----> Rudiger. Other than that looks very strong, not sure if i would choose double Brentford. Might work out. Maybe Mbeumo to ESR or Toney to Wilson ( either 1 of these moves)

Your prob right, removes a rotation risk for a more nailed guy. Yeah can play around with a decent combo.

King a more punty move but prospect of hauling under Ranieri. Ranieri might have changed the shape of the team for better. Still to be seen but getting onto the train now is fun. I haven't seen Soton game so can't comment on Broja, not sure if Broja is nailed though.

i did very well with it two seasons ago, and did fairly well with it last season. I wouldnt spend too much time planning to get a big BB score though as it will almost certainly never go to plan with injuries, rotation etc. you would have to own a brilliant squad with a fantastic set of fixtures for all your players, to use it in a SGW

    3. Eze Really?
      • 9 Years

Me. To have a side using a BB in a single GW, can anyone tell me how often all have played. One has to be careful not to dilute the the main 11 players by having a bench, but a DGW is easier to predict all the bench getting a game. For me it is a chip that will just appear as prudent; planning usually ends up in tears.

Don’t think I’ve played it in a double GW, there normally comes a time where my bench looks fine to play it in a SGW. Saying that I’ve only ever scored about 15-20 points which is pretty average I would think.

Last season I've got something like 29 pts but that's about it. Usually it's a 15 pointer more or less.

If you want to ask about using BB in a SGW I'm not against, if your bench looks good any given GW just play it.

I really can't see Mount having anther mega haul next week as he is not historically so prolific and Havertz may well get a good score. If you have had him just the one week you should stick for the rest of their good fixtures IMO

B would worry me by virtue of the fact you want to change. Not because of the call but the disappointment of having a Chelsea player benched. There is a train of thought to have both Alonso and Chilwell. Costs under 12 mil and you have a guaranteed big hitter. Just a thought.
D is a brave move that will repay you probably over 4 GW's
        C a sensible pick IMO

      Should I wc this lot

      Sanchez
      Taa cancelo rudiger
      Salah raph mbuemo benrahma
      Vardy Antonio jiminez

Flags for mbeumo vardy and raph
Would probably remove Antonio benrahma and possibly jimi
Bring in a Chelsea fb and Foden too

No playing bench either except white

I know I could stretch this team longer but perhaps it’s time

Waiting for injury updates is obviously sensible but prices are also changing and a last min wild card paying more for players would be annoying too

Build a WC team, compare it with current one. Count the number of major changes.

Dropping Antonio and Benrahma this week probably isnt a good idea, Villa has been poor.

Not sure how you will get Foden even on WC (assuming you wouldnt make changes in defense).

You cannot plan for the Shaw Livra on the bench situation. These issues have been a common thread TBH, even for those not Wcarding.
