Vardy and Mbeumo injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Brentford v Leicester City.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s Premier League action, click here, while you can read up on Arsenal v Aston Villa, Leeds United v Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur via the links below.

BRENTFORD 1-2 LEICESTER CITY

  • Goals: Mathias Jorgensen (£4.5m) | Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), James Maddison (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Mathias Jensen (£4.9m) | Patson Daka (£7.1m)
  • Bonus: Tielemans x3, Jensen x2, Maddison x1, Christian Norgaard (£5.0m) x1

WHY WAS VARDY SUBSTITUTED AT HALF-TIME?

Vardy injury latest as Tielemans keeps up fine FPL form 1

FPL’s joint-top scoring forward, Jamie Vardy (£10.8m), was substituted after 45 minutes in Gameweek 9.

Following the match, Brendan Rodgers revealed that the veteran striker had felt something in his knee during the warm-up, and was taken off after his manager felt he wasn’t moving right in the first-half.

“He felt something in the warm-up, something in his knee but he felt OK to give it a go.

You could see he wasn’t as dynamic or moving like he normally would be, so there was no point risking it further if he’s sore. So, we gave him a breather and brought Patson on.

We will have a look at that tomorrow (Monday).” – Brendan Rodgers

His replacement – Patson Daka (£7.1m) – followed up his Gameweek 8 goal and subsequent four against Spartak Moscow with an assist. When on the pitch, he generally delivers, and if we were to see a period on the side-lines for Vardy, Daka would surely see huge Fantasy interest ahead of Arsenal (h) and Leeds United (a).

CONSISTENT TIELEMANS

Today’s match also saw a wonderful strike by Youri Tielemans (£6.4m), who has now produced two goals and two assists in his last five appearances. Regardless of the system – Leicester have used a 4-3-3, 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 in recent weeks – the Belgium midfielder is thriving, and after collecting maximum bonus, now sits joint-fifth amongst all midfielders for FPL points.

Statistically, amongst all sub-£7.0m midfielders, he ranks sixth for expected goal involvement (xGI), which is partly down to how many of his shots are coming from outside of the box. However, his creative numbers remain excellent.

Youri Tielemans xG shot map 2021/22

Sub £7.0m midfielders ranked by xGI 2021/22

Elsewhere, James Maddison (£6.7m) opened his 2021/22 account after a swift counter-attack, which Rodgers touched on after the game:

“He’s returning to the level, he’s been competitive when he hasn’t got the ball and that keeps the tempo. He showed some real moments of quality.

(The goal) will be really important for him. His job is to create and score goals. When you don’t have that, you do lose confident. We have been analysing his game, and what’s important for him to be at this level.

You can see in his last few performances, he’s gradually got better. I’m delighted for him.”

MBEUMO INJURY NEWS

As for Brentford, it was another encouraging display by Thomas Frank’s troops on Sunday, who dominated for large periods and narrowly won the xG battle.

Up until Tielemans struck, they were comfortably the better team, with Ivan Toney (£6.5m) having a goal controversially ruled out for offside and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) missing a good chance early on. However, the latter looked off the pace and was eventually hooked just before the hour mark. Frank later explained that the withdrawal of the ‘out of position’ midfielder was enforced.

“Bryan Mbeumo and Ethan Pinnock will be out for [the EFL Cup on] Wednesday. Hopefully, they are available for Saturday, it is too early to say yet.

“Bryan is a minor hamstring issue. It is not a big one because that would rule him out for the next couple of weeks. We took him off as it was the early stages so, hopefully, he can be available for Saturday.” – Thomas Frank

Despite today’s setback, the Bees’ are about to embark on an appealing run, as they rank top of our season ticker for ease of fixture between Gameweeks 10 and 16:

Toney and Mbeumo (if fit) are the standout attacking options, but the defence shouldn’t be overlooked. In fact, only Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea have a lower non-penalty xGC total so far this season:

“We deserved three points. We battered them for the first 45 minutes, there were only one team in the game.

I’m proud of the performance and the boys, and although we weren’t as dominant after half-time, and the only thing I can blame us for is the second goal.

We have to do better in terms of recovery and getting back in, but if we can replicate this game again and again, we’d win it seven times out of 10.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford XI: Raya, Zanka, Jansson, Pinnock (Ajer 45), Canos, Onyeka (Ghoddos 77), Norgaard, Jensen, Henry, Toney, Mbeumo (Forss 57)

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Amartey, Evans, Soyuncu (Vestergaard 68), Pereira, Tielemans, Soumare, Castagne, Maddison (Perez 78), Vardy (Daka 45), Iheanacho

Probably yes. Raph a hard one. Injury, Brasil, lacking assists due to nobody to give too, low ceiling, are good reasons to think he is not as undervalued as people think. (not that I listen to my own advice)

    Cancelo Rudiger Christensen White Livramento

Would you sell Christensen (rotation risk) or White (less good defence)? 0.6 difference in price.

Livra has covered Christensen brilliantly since I bought so haven’t lost out at all on his benchings but appreciate this probably won’t continue.

I think either way I’m going to want to get rid in a few weeks of whoever I keep as all of Chelsea, Arsenal and Southampton’s fixtures are less good.

Given that, you think I may as well try to cash in on Chelsea defence points in the next 3?

I would keep Chelsea for the next 3 over Arsenal.
White baps are consistent around 18 for home games and unlikely to get any bonus when they score. So pretty limited points but he’s good cover.
If it’s for a playing defender I’d lose white first

Yeah I won't. It would be like chasing your losses at this point. Salah just looked so good. Every little backheel, flick and shot is going exactly where he wants it to go.

But honestly, I don't think I've ever experienced a more consistently painful watch in 17 years of playing. First your CF captain's team bangs in goal after goal without his involvement. And then you have to sit through Salah taking every single opportunity again and again and again. Gonna take a while to build back from this one.

Sorry, the reply was aimed at Offs!de. But yeh, I can understand your pain. I feel lucky to be on the right side of Lady Luck for once. The safe option is to permacap Salah, but it will be hard to close the gap if everyone's doing it. Too early in the season to take reckless risks though.

The question is, given you won't cap Havertz, is to keep him or ditch him. I took a gamble last week and got Foden instead of Kai - another lucky break, but he might disappear like Torres going forward.

Rudiger and Chilwell the best double up from Chelsea defence?

Tons more upside if you go James instead of Rudi but with cameos and benchings for James, Rudiger gives you more constant flow of points.

Depends on the whole squad. If you can stomach one benching, Rudi/Chilli works fine; if you can tolerate a double-benching, Chill/James has a higher ceiling.

On WC and currently on Chill/James with the intention of 2 worthwhile bench players to cover no shows. Seems unlikely if one doesn't start they get on and James when fit is first choice in the 'easier' games it seems when Azpi is in for the harder tests.

      Is there tons more upside?

Rudiger features very heavily in the charts of most attacking defenders. He's already near the number of shots he had in the entirety of last season.

Only Mount had more shots than he did last week and that was only because of the pen.

Foden and Cornet a punt. I mentioned Cornet last week as he seems a star going forward. My bad for not listening to myself.

Cornet could be a good option.

If he was in a more attack minded team than Burnley he'd be higher up in profile. Didn't Burnley start taking more risks going forward the second half of last season too?

Would not go Son, I have him and with Nuno at the wheel he will regress.

Foden the one to get. Got him in days ago. Have Cancelo as well. Could end up bringing in Jesus for the triple up.

All I heard is he left the ground in a boot and crutches so I think it’s very unlikely he makes it

Will consider benching if it’s only 1 game

I am looking for midfielders at the same price bracket to Raphinha and there are not a lot of options. With Mbeumo injured the only one i can think is Elyounoussi.Specifically for gw13-15 i think that Raphinha would still be the best midfielder.Any thoughts?

Wait for Mbeumo news, I think he's still the best option if fit. Other options are ESR, Cornet.

I saw this when Raph got injured, then killed the spot in my team

Remember when the 7.5-8.0 mid bracket died at once, a few GWs ago, and budget mids were flying? It's turned again in GW9, so I've switched again. I've chosen Foden from the bunch for GW10+, to go with Salah and Son in a 4-3-3. Transfers will focus on my three forwards, GK and three defenders for the foreseeable future. Until more injuries and then AFCON, of course

If you want direct replacements, then I agree with Skeng. Would take those over Elyou, who's about to have a minor surgery btw: https://twitter.com/FFScout/status/1452551005334343685?s=20

It's not turned again, it's hit the jackpot in a high-variance week. Watch Mount and Foden blank next week while Havertz and Bernardo haul

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 6 months ago

Havertz and Bernardo are in the price bracket I'm referring to

5.5 to 6.5 has gotten hit hard by injuries (Raph and Mbeumo) and fixture swings (Everton) for their best representatives. There'll still be some consistent 6.0 out there flying under the radar, maybe that's Cornet (who hit the jackpot this GW), just like how Jota Greenwood Foden kept that price bracket ticking over before it exploded in GW9 and left the cheaper bracket in the dust. I see a template shift, not that all options are now dead, especially with Hwang and a back 4 coming into play, and premium strikers evaporating

Think there is just too much hype around Raphinha.

Leeds were pumping when he joined them last season so an easy transition. Now with Leeds in a shambles he is expected to carry them and taking it's toll.

Raphinha will be a 'neither here or there' asset to own week after week.

    4. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years

Raphinha is top dog in that price range, and is also a better pick than most mids 1.0-2.0 above him

Since GW14 of last season (he was only added to the game in GW5, and didn’t get his first start until GW9, didn’t really settle until GW14) he has 18 returns in 29 appearances

That’s the level (or slightly above, and way above in weeks where he manages to get lucky instead of unlucky) he should continue delivering at in his next 30 or so appearances

The injuries are black swan events, like Antonio’s sending off and ban, they will lead knee jerkers to draw incorrect conclusions when looking at small sample sizes

He’ll be absolutely fine - by the end of GW15 the doubts will likely look very dubious in hindsight (unless he gets injured or something unpredictable)

Game against Norwich next is going to be uncomfortable to watch for non-owners

Thought it was gone - must have been a glitch - worst case even if he doesn't make it one game doesn't change things either way

                  Form is fleeting/class is permanent

                  And Raphinha is all class
