Why Duffy was benched and Foden’s fine form: FPL notes from Brighton v Man City

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 9 Scout Notes with analysis of Brighton and Hove Albion v Manchester City.

For a briefer summary of all six of Saturday’s games, click here, while the footer at the bottom of this piece will direct you to our detailed Scout Notes on the other Gameweek 9 action.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION 1-4 MANCHESTER CITY

  • Goals: Alexis Mac Allister (£5.4m) | Ilkay Gundogan (£7.2m), Phil Foden (£8.1m) x2, Riyad Mahrez (£8.7m)
  • Assists: Enock Mwepu (£5.9m) | Bernardo Silva (£7.0m), Jack Grealish (£7.9m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.6m), Foden
  • Bonus: Foden x3, Gundogan x2, Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) x2

FODEN IMPRESSES THROUGH MIDDLE

Phil Foden (£8.1m) netted a brace and set up another on Saturday evening as Man City dispatched Brighton 4-1.

The England international has now started the last four Premier League matches, and as a result of his 18-point haul, has seen his ownership rise to 8.7%, having gone into the weekend as a real differential.

In Gameweek 9, he posted match-leading totals for goal attempts, shots in the box, final-third touches, penalty area touches and expected goal involvement (xGI), while his average position in possession was comfortably higher than any of his team-mates.

Man City’s average position map v Brighton in Gameweek 9, featuring Foden (no. 47)

“In the final third he can play up front, has the quality to move and be aggressive one on one and arrive in the box. He can play as a striker, a false nine, a winger, wide left. The position doesn’t matter. It’s about playing well, depending on the movement of the opponent, and many other circumstances. What is important is to understand the game. There are players that play in one position, and players that play football. And when you play football, that means you can play in any position, because you understand the game.” – Pep Guardiola on Phil Foden

DE BRUYNE BENCHED

With Bernardo Silva (£7.0m), Ilkay Gundogan (£7.2m) and Rodri (£5.5m) being favoured in City’s central-midfield three, that meant Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) was left on the substitutes’ bench, at least until the latter stages of the game. However, despite only coming on in the 77th minute, the Belgian did create four chances as Guardiola perhaps looks to manage the playmaker’s workload.

Man City players ranked by xGI over the last four Gameweeks

City started the season with a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, but have not lost a Premier League game since, and have now taken 20 points from the past 24 on offer.

LAMPTEY PUSHING FOR START

Despite shipping four goals, Brighton put in an encouraging second-half display, with Tariq Lamptey’s (£4.4m) appearance off the bench catching the eye.

The youngster made a really positive impact, as he attempts to build up his match fitness following a 10-month injury layoff. With 64 minutes clocked since Gameweek 8, he will surely be pushing for a start soon, with the Seagulls’ fixtures easing following this weekend’s trip to Liverpool.

Tariq Lamptey’s touch heatmap v Man City in Gameweek 9

Brighton’s fixtures Gameweeks 11 to 15

“That’s his second appearance in a long, long time so we are trying to build his minutes up. I am delighted for him. We have got him on the pitch and we saw more of a version of Tariq than last week, which is normal. It’s a process for him to go through. He is getting there and we are trying to support him and it’s great to have him back.” – Graham Potter on Tariq Lamptey

As for Shane Duffy (£4.4m), the Irishman has been playing at a high level during the opening weeks, and as a result, is owned by 25.0% of FPL managers. However, he was an unused substitute against City, with his manager suggesting that it was a specific change for this match-up, with Duffy’s strengths perhaps not as well suited to the challenges posed by a Pep side.

“Well, I think they (Man City) pose you that challenge. Shane has played a load of football, and it’s just a tactical decision. It’s no slight on Shane at all, he’s there ready to help us at the back of the game.” – Graham Potter on Shane Duffy

Elsewhere, despite making a costly error for City’s opener, Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) owners will be delighted with his four-point return, having made eight saves and collected two bonus points during that match.

Brighton XI: Sanchez, Veltman, Dunk, Burn (Lamptey 57), March, Gross (Mac Allister 72), Lallana, Moder, Cucurella, Trossard, Maupay (Mwepu 58)

Man City XI: Ederson, Walker, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Gundogan (Fernandinho 75), Jesus (Mahrez 87), Grealish (De Bruyne 77), Foden

      I’m not falling for it.

Having been burned by Torres I think it may be wise to leave City outfielders alone.

That Trent price rise out of nowhere is so annoying. Had the exact money to do Tierney > TAA.

Christensen > TAA worth doing instead?

Him getting those pts vs MU was unfortunate, that offline goal denied by VAR was too much. No certain about timing of your transfer. Maybe you can afford Tierney to him after one minor downgrade elsewhere?

I could ditch Benrahma but don't fancy taking a -4 to get TAA. I might just ride it out this week. If I knew Christensen would start vs Newcastle then I'd gladly keep and start him.

I'm keeping him for the next month most likely. West Ham are a really good team. I don't think losing to them tells us that much.

He has until GW16 for me unless he gets injured or I really desperately need the funds to upgrade somewhere else.

I don't think money matters that much at the moment considering only Salah looks like he's worth the money from the premiums. And I still trust Kane more than Aubameyang for instance purely because he's nailed on for 90 every game.

I used my FT last week to bring him in for CR7. He didn't have a great game against West Ham but I'm not overly concerned (Son was poor as well). He's up against Man United and Everton next who both conceded 5 at the weekend, then a lovely run of fixtures. I think you keep at least until GW15 now, bar injury.

A lot will depend on how long Raph is out for, but what is the bigger priority here in terms of using the FT (£1.6m ITB)?

    Raphinha -> Foden
    Christensen -> Chilwell.

Sarr and Benrahma are the only other duds, but they both have half-decent fixtures this week so will probably hold them both one more week.

I really like that set of moves. But selling Raphinha when he has Norwich next is dicey. I wouldn't worry too much about price rises. Both Chilwell and Foden already went up so they are very unlikely to rise again until Friday at the earliest.

Just a bit of tinkering.. building the team(and not falling down further till GW11), and then KDB -> Son and Vardy -> Ronaldo in GW12. Probably new manager bounce by then for Ronaldo? 😉 Not a United fan even, but loving this drama. Conte if he comes will turn Ronaldo into a goal scoring machine imo.

Going back to Havertz against Norwich, was owning him enough of a differential rather than captaining him as well ?

A captain needs a high ceiling, even better should typically be giving us a return in as many games as possible so that we avoid the dreaded blank and be likely to play out most of the game.

Havertz has played 34 PL games for Chelsea (some off the bench) and only passed 80 minutes 9 times, only returned in 6 of those 34 games but in 2 games last season had a double return.

So just 6 returns in 34 games and just 2 double digit ‘high ceiling’ returns.

Salah … this season alone returns in 7 out of 8 games and 5 were double digit hauls

Was Havertz as captain trying to be just a little bit too clever?

With Salah’s EO, if he hauls and you have not captained him invariable you will drop in rank unless you were also lucky with your captain pick, but why risk that?

Surely the tactic is to captain Salah and cluster differentials (if that is your style) around him rather than chasing the holy grail of a haul from a differential captain?

Yes, I have now got round to playing this way after dropping from 12k to 300k in the space 2 GW's. Havertz (c) this past weekend was a risk I took too far.

It was typical FFS sheep behaviour and, frankly, I don’t feel in the least bit sorry for anyone who capped him.

It’s not like he was on fire before the Norwich game, but for some reason there was this assumption that he was going to suddenly be the main focal point of the Chelsea attack and was going to put Norwich to the sword.

It just felt like a trap, and so it proved to be.

Havertz scored a hat-trick against Barnsley in the cup. The ceiling was there. It just didn't work out.

Now my decision to captain Kane on the other hand... I was stupid. I hold my hands up for trying to be too clever.

I don’t think you can count one haul in a dodgy cup against weakened lower league teams like Barnsley as an good indicator for FPL decisions, imho

I brought him in but did not captain him over Salah but I did consider it early last week.
He didn’t even have good enough number to bring him in never mind captain him. A decision taken too quickly that I regret and it also involved some hits and losing ESR from my team 🙁

depends if Ole stops with the pressing and goes back to parking the bus to avoid another embarrassing scoreline

He basically has to. He can't afford another loss like that.

If raphina is out who’s best replacement?

    Thinking mount or tielemans
    I already have foden

I have this feeling that Mount is a trap. Amazing score this GW however.

When everyone is fit again I expect him to be rotated heavily. But it's team depending, he could be short term gold. And what do I know, I sold Jota for Son last week 🙁

Mount would be fine, sadly a week early for Zaha

Would you get Mount for Raphina, even if you already had Havertz?

No I would prefer double Chelsea defence than double midfield

Got to get rid of Digne on WC, but until then, I wouldn't mind so much his -1’s if he’d follow them up with hauls. But he doesn’t.

What to do with this lot?

    Foster
    Azpi Rudi Cancelo
    Salah(c) Raph* Mbuemo* Saka
    Vardy* Antonio Jimmy

    Bench: Ramsdale Livra Brownhill Duffy
    1 FT, 5.6m ITB

Considering moving Brownhill to keep Raphina and Mbuemo for their good fixtures.

    A) Brownhill > Foden
    B) Brownhill > Mount
    C) Brownhill > Son
    D) Other

Depends on Vardy's fitness but if fine, Foden or 4 back with TAA

Any of those 3 options, probably lean towards mount. Just not sure about rotation risk with foden

The potential in this team is huge but does it contain to many risks for the bench strength? Another option is
    Changing Jesus and Raphina
    For Nacho and Foden

    Raya

    TAA VVD Dias Cancelo Chilwell

    Salah Son Raphina

    Antonio Jesus

    Steele Kovacic McArthur Gelhardt

Rudiger and James will match VVD and Dias for quite a bit less; depends how badly you want Kovacic

I have just brought Kovacic in. He is a different player this year his value is too great to ignore anymore.
        Too many risks or not?
In theory 2 defenders and Jesus could be benched any week.
Thanks for the feedback James over VVD is a hard one. James is just more risk and not convinced on where I put the extra cash.
        James and Jota
        Or VVD and Raphina?

the team looks great, if Raph is fit he's a keep for me, still doing well this season even with Leeds' injury problems.

VVD vs Rudi/James is close, the extra mil-ish spent on VVD seems like a luxury when Rudi has averaged 5 PPG since Tuchel took over, but if you don't have any need for it then that's fine.

            Cool thanks again.
Livra is currently in that VVD / Rugier / James spot so I don’t have to rush a decision but it is a difficult one.

How’s this squad looking. 1 FT and 1.0m ITB

    Sanchez
    TAA Rudiger Semedo Livra
    Salah Havertz Raphina Benrahma
    Vardy Antonio

Subs - Steele ASM Allan and Reguilon

Obviously waiting to see injury updates forVardy and Raph but presuming they are fit do I roll the transfer? Lots of places that need upgrades if not:

    Allan —> ESR
    Benrahma/Raph —> Mount
    Sanchez —> Raya
    ASM —> Hwang

Wait on injury news before moves. You need City players.
If all good maybe save a transfer.

Can’t really afford anyone from City at the moment. Probably try and save transfer this week and downgrade ASM and get a City midfielder next week

Foden rising fast, on 94.6% atm. Looks lie he'll rise tonight. Hate that, as on the money for planned move pending Vardy injury update

Brentford and Mbuemo are a trap, surprised to find so many complimentary comments towards both.

    1. @persecuted_by_mods

Not sure on them yet, they've done well enough with a tough run but the community is reading that as them automatically doing well when the fixture run is easier and that isn't how it works

Absolutely, also, having watched Brentford, I'm certain they will be fighting relegation next season. Their football seems to be route one. That won't work for long. As for Mbuemo, he's scored 2 goals in the league from 9 games, during a kind run of fixtures. Underwhelming.
