Armstrong ends goal drought as Livramento keeps up fine FPL form

We begin our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 11 Scout Notes with analysis of Southampton v Aston Villa.

SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 ASTON VILLA

  • Goals: Adam Armstrong (£5.9m)
  • Assists: none
  • Bonus (projected): Adam Armstrong x3, Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) x2, Jan Bednarek (£4.4m) x2

ARMSTRONG NETS WINNER

Armstrong ends goal drought as Livramento delivers again

Prior to Gameweek 11, Adam Armstrong (£5.9m) had failed to score since the opening day, having attempted 25 shots without finding the back of the net. However, an excellent first-time strike after just three minutes tonight got Southampton off to the perfect start, and ensured that the 24-year-old has now bagged attacking returns in back-to-back Gameweeks.

“No pressure for me, I know I can score goals, I have had chances and as a striker that is football. You cannot be too down on yourself.” – Adam Armstrong

After another two goal attempts against Aston Villa, Armstrong has now registered 29 shots this term, second only to Michail Antonio (£8.2m) amongst all forwards.

With Che Adams (£6.8m) and Adam Armstrong paired up front together again, budget forward Armando Broja (£5.0m) had to settle for a place on the bench, with a frustrating 10-minute cameo ensuring he ends the Gameweek with just one point.

After tonight’s win, Southampton have now taken 10 points from their last four matches. During that time, they have kept three clean sheets and conceded just two goals, ahead of an appealing away trip to Norwich City after the international break.

FULL-BACKS IMPRESS

Elsewhere, Southampton’s full-backs were both excellent on the night, and regularly found themselves in advanced positions.

That was enhanced after a switch to a three-at-the-back formation following the introduction of Lyanco (£4.5m), but it was encouraging all the same, and bodes well for their prospects moving forwards.

Tino Livramento (left) and Kyle Walker-Peters (right) touch heatmaps v Aston Villa in Gameweek 11

As for Livramento, the 21.7% owned defender was benched by 474,600 FPL managers in Gameweek 11, despite now returning either a goal, assist or clean sheet in seven of his last eight appearances.

Elsewhere, In his pre-match interview Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed that Nathan Redmond (£5.9m) was isolating, having tested positive for Covid.

“Nathan Redmond tested positive but is fine at home.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

ANOTHER DEFEAT FOR VILLA

After tonight’s loss, it’s now five defeats in a row for Dean Smith’s side, which has seen them drop to 15th in the table.

During that period, they have conceded 13 goals, which means only Newcastle United and Norwich City have a worse defensive record than Villa this season.

MOST PREMIER LEAGUE DEFEATS IN 2021:

Aston Villa18
Southampton18
Burnley17
Newcastle United17

As is stands, it does feel like this Villa defence is one to target in the coming weeks, especially given their ongoing issues defending set-pieces, which is something to keep in mind with Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Manchester City up next after the international break.

“They were the better team in the first half. We got them in at half-time and put it right. Bailey played down the middle and Buendia off the right and we looked a totally different team. We played with intensity in the second half. There was a response. You can’t question the character of the players. We have a few injuries. Some of our subs were academy graduates. I don’t like making excuses. We shouldn’t be losing five games on the spin. We can get some players back to fitness during the international break and come back stronger. You’d like a game in the next three or four days but we can’t.” – Dean Smith

Southampton XI: McCarthy, Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Walker-Peters, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Elyounoussi (Diallo 76), S Armstrong (Lyanco 56), Adams, A Armstrong (Broja 81)

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Tuanzebe, Mings, Targett, Nakamba (J Ramsey 63), McGinn, Bailey, Buendia (Archer 71), El Ghazi (Davis 79), Watkins

Worked my way to top 20k without a single hit. Seems I need to make my first cos I'm stuck. Want Son but struggling to figure it out.

PLEASE HELP. Have 1.8itb and 2FT
    Sanchez (Steele)
    TAA Rudiger Chilwell Livramento Reguilon
    Salah Raphinha (ESR Townsend Gilmour)

I guess you can drop Antonio to enable Townsend to Son, then do Jimenez to Antonio after 3-4 weeks.

        Townsend + Antonio = Son + 4.9
Cant find a striker in that range, I'll probably need 3 transfers. What do you think?

Chelsea have Leicester away and have had the best part of the run, so i would probably just fond a cheaper defenders you can play next week and then save 1, and then you have more space of you want to reinvest in midfield say over Antonio.

          Have you watched Spurs? 😉

Wouldn't have Son in buy territory until we have seen if Conte can magic up a midfield. Also don't rate Burnley away and Brentford home as fixture prospects - very neutral. Take a look at Burnley's home record if you don't believe me.

Really regretting not going with my gut and BBing this week. McCarthy 9 pointer already on the bench, and Raphinha, Duffy and Laporte replacement (would've been Mitchell if I BBed) still to come. Hope I won't live to regret this decision.

    Early thoughts
    A) Havertz, Sarr, Cancelo -> Son, Mbuemo, White (-4)
    B) Havertz, Sarr, Antonio, -> Son, Brownhill, Toney (-4)
    C) Havertz, Auba -> Son, Toney

A has Livra as bench cover
B has Livra in starting 11
C has Sarr benched, Livra playing

Not sure I'd go for Toney now, he's got the best fixtures you can have this and next week but after that they aren't the best so I think unless you're going into next week already having him just leave him. Can you do Havertz and Sarr out to fit in Son without moving someone else as well? Auba is a nice little differential right now, I'm not too sure if he can keep up the form but I think he's worth giving the chance, and Antonio's numbers are still great (has identical non-penalty xG as Salah and very close xG+xA as him), he has tough fixtures but personally I think they might suit him and West Ham more as they'll have more chances to counter

Cheers! Fold for thought. Not enough for Havertz and Sarr -> Son and someone (only 4.1). But might downgrade Cancelo as well to keep Auba and Antonio.

I disagree about Toney. He’s got great fixtures til GW16!

Hmmm good point, perhaps I didn't properly look at them. I guess my worry is form, he's only scored twice in 10 games so it guess I'm just not too convinced on him, perhaps I may actually keep him longer if he does pick up points in the next two.

There is a reason it’s called fantasy football. Cause it’s not real ( well kinda not) and in the overall scheme of things it doesn’t matter a jot. Unless you win it which is a one in over 8 million chance. I will say time difference is a pain but I ain’t getting up at 5:30 am to watch games.

Based on your comments I don’t think you should go a big 5 at the back like I have done. There will be bad weeks with this strategy but also weeks with monster hauls. Take the rough with the smooth and move on. We all know we lose CS after 88 mins 🙂

Not q stranger for the City goalfest, but if 3-5 goals there is a decent chance Dias is involved as a United are gash defending set pieces. From my pov City keeps cs if Pep refers from doing something tactical experiment. If City plays like they did to Chelsea am not sure United will even aloud to step over the half line.. People are again letting United scoring against Atalanta cloud their judgement. Injury striken Italia team 5th in the league playing style is gung ho attack, Who can ship four goals to now serie b team Spal..

No, not silly, it was your decision, and you decided to choose someone you believed had better chance to get points than him. Some times you get it right some times it goes wrong. And that could be decided by things you can not control.

Can’t disagree with that. My point was more that you were coming at this from a deeper analysis rather than a hunch of who to bench.

And my point was that this deeper analysis often goes alongside or are similar to these hunches. Because the decision is based on different interpretations, memories, feelings, all those things which differs from person to person. For instance my impression of City defense stems from that Chelsea game but another player can have picked up a weak thing in their defense from another game or stats etc. I benched Livra for Antonio, and my hunch was just that i dont like how my team Liverpool set up their midfield, and in general plays in a way that leaves a lot of space open. I want Gini W BACK!

We will see at the end of the week how it went-)

I think that is a very interesting part of playing fpl, these decisions you make for your team, thats why i have always tebded to prefer having a more rounded squad so i can challenge myself a little bit with this often having what people terms as bench headache, which for mr translates into having more options to play.

    Hi DZ

    McCarthy
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell James Livra
    (C) Salah Son Foden
    Antonio Hwang

    Matthews • Vardy Brownhill D.Luiz

1 FT. If nothing big happens, I think I'm in a good position to roll. Agree?

About Vardy: Antonio is on my bench for Livra in GW11, Vardy in GW12. If the fixture is bad enough for me/others to consider selling, I'll bench that player, especially with Livra facing two of the worst teams in a row. 4-3-3 returns in GW13

At 500k rank, Son (C) is tempting but also dangerous, considering what Leicester did to Arsenal. When your keeper needs to make that many top saves, it's not a good idea to visit Salah soon after

That’s close to the team I want.
But I would lose Vardy and/ or Antonio to strengthen the midfield and bench. But yes in the short term it looks amazing so I might hold the FT and hold for any ITB injuries.
MCCarthy make top saves is exactly what you want but Martinez * 2 saves were something special.

I had a plan involving getting Antonio back, but this current plan easily benches him except when he's facing City (thanks to Livra, tbh), so I'm rolling with it instead and saving that buy-back cash

Oh sorry. I think I miscommunicated:

It's Ramsdale I'm referring to. He had to make top saves to stop Leicester, meaning Liverpool will create lots of chances, so I'll probably still cap Salah instead of Son

And thanks! 🙂 After McCarthy to Guaita in GW13, it's Vardy to Jesus for GW14 and D.Luiz up to 5.7, then Son + Hwang to CR7 + 4.4 in GW16, all hopefully for free

      • 5 Years

It wasn't a 9-0 it was 50 goals in under 25 matches - Southampton absolutely stank for two thirds of last season. Those weren't anomalous results a la Brighton. They were genuinely awful.

There's a top side to his management clearly but not a super manager. But then you rated Smith as manager of the season no?

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

The 9-0’s were definitely anomalous results yes - the Leciester game was 9 conceded from 4 XG after Bertrand’s 11th minute red card

They had 2 men sent off at Old Trafford, including jankewitz after 60 seconds, and conceded 9 goals from 5 XG

Pretty much the definition of anomalous & not something you’d ever expect to continue

Smith was definitely a candidate for MOTS at the point last year where he had Villa absolutely flying and just as they were starting to struggle from the Grealish injury

Loads of teams absolutely stank last year, and loads of teams will absolutely stink this year

Doesn’t change my opinion that Hassenhutl is well on his way to a bigger job - he had Southampton as top 5 in the league form table over a massive sample of season-spanning games at one point last season

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

In fact, If you look at the form table from pretty much this time last year it shows Hassenhutl was dragging fairly special results out of Southampton, for a ludicrously extended period too:

          MD14 19/20 - MD13 20/21 (All teams played 38 games):
          1. Liverpool 90
          2. Man City 76
          3. Man Utd 75
          4. Spurs 67
          (!) 5. Southampton 67 (!)
          6. Chelsea 62
          7. Wolves 60
          8. Leciester 57

          https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/premier-league/formtabelle/wettbewerb/GB1?saison_id=2019&min=14&max=38

In fairness that run of form above simply had to end, otherwise he was literally going to have Southampton challenging for a champions league place…

But He has again bounced back and dragged Southampton onto another run of form too - unbeaten in 9 of their last 10 league games (a run which has included Man Utd as well as away at both city & Chelsea… and it’s harsh to criticise defeat away at Chelsea)… has now won 3 & drawn 1 of his last 4…

You chose the phrase “super manager”, not me, but I do stand by my original opinion that he’s definitely proved himself ready for a “bigger” job - wherever that may be

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years
            2 years, 5 months ago

*8 of their last 10 with the 0-1 vs Wolves in fairness, which was a *slightly* unlucky result though considering they had 18 shots to Wolves 5 shots & doesn’t materially change things either way

Depends. He's basically a bench player for me as part of a shift to 442 while striker options are so thin. Bit disappointed about last night after I subbed him in for Mount, but can stay on the bench for a while & wait & see. Still rather have him than 4.5 fwd who never plays

I've got Kane already, got him a few weeks ago. Would prefer to have Son but will need to use 2 moves to get him. I've rolled my FT this week, but will be waiting to see how tomorrow goes. Son would be my preference. However if one scores the other is usually involved.

Son is probably still great asset, with Kane I would wait and see. If there are signs he's back to his form from last season then I would consider, but for now wasting probably 2FT on him is too risky.

I have Son. He's going for CR7 in GW16, then probably coming back when Salah goes for AFCON. For me, Kane is outdone by the CR7/Lukaku/Vardy axis, especially if Son continues this way. Even if Kane starts firing for Conte, the fixtures are too short-term with CR7 definitely marked for GW16+
