Eight FPL returns in seven starts for Bowen and hope for Antonio despite blanks

Following our round-ups of Saturday and Sunday’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action, our Scout Notes cover all the Gameweek 11 matches in more depth.

IN-FORM HAMMERS

West Ham United ended Liverpool’s 25-game unbeaten run on Sunday, with an excellent 3-2 victory that ensures they head into the international break ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s side in third place.

Notably, across 2021, the Hammers have been the third-best Premier League team, with only champions Manchester City and Chelsea bagging more points. During that time, they have scored 62 goals in 33 games, a total only Pep Guardiola’s side can eclipse.

That suggests that keeping faith with Michail Antonio (£8.2m) a while longer could be a wise move, despite four blanks in his last five appearances, and a tougher immediate schedule:

In fact, the Jamaican international has now scored just two goals in his last seven league games. However, there isn’t a lot wrong with his underlying numbers over that period, despite an obvious dip in attacking returns.

Forwards ranked by xGI Gameweeks 4-11

The lack of alternatives in his category is another reason to hold. 

Over the weekend, amongst all forwards, only Teemu Pukki (£5.8m), Adam Armstrong (£5.9m), Matej Vydra (£5.2m) and Divock Origi (£4.9m) found the back of the net, with the likes of Ivan Toney (£6.7m), Jamie Vardy (£10.8m) and Harry Kane (£12.2m) extending their run of blanks to five/three/three matches respectively.

IS BOWEN THE BEST FPL MIDFIELDER UNDER £6.5M?

After his brace of assists in Gameweek 11, Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m) has now produced at least one attacking return in six of his last seven appearances. 

During that time, only Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) can boast a higher expected goal involvement (xGI) total amongst all players, yet the winger is still only owned by just 1.8% of FPL managers.

The mid-price midfielder category is certainly stacked with options right now, with the likes of Conor Gallagher (£5.8m) and Emile Smith Rowe (£5.8m) also vying for our attention, but Bowen could be the best of the lot, with his share of set-pieces – and how good West Ham are at them – also worth factoring in.

“We spend a lot of time on set-pieces. The gaffer, Kev [Nolan], Nev [Paul Nevin], [Stuart] Pearcey, Bill [McKinlay], all the coaching staff… we put so much detail into our set-pieces and I think we’ve scored a lot of goals off of them. It’s not a fluke, the amount we’ve scored. Some games can be decided on set-pieces and we’ve had two goals from them – I’m not sure if the first one is an own-goal, or whatever happened, but it went in – and with Kurt Zouma’s first West Ham goal as well, I’m delighted for him.” – Jarrod Bowen

Elsewhere, budget defender Ben Johnson (£4.0m) was once again selected at right-back ahead of Vladimir Coufal (£4.8m), who had to settle for a place on the bench. The youngster had another excellent game, which suggests the Czech international may have to wait for his chance to prove himself once more.

DOUBLE-DIGITS FOR ALEXANDER-ARNOLD

FPL Gameweek 11 round-up: Sunday’s goals, assists, bonus and injuries

Despite conceding three goals, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m) still managed his fourth double-digit return of the campaign, courtesy of a first-half free-kick and assist for Origi’s consolation.

The England international now ranks second amongst all defenders for FPL points, despite missing two games through illness and injury respectively, 

Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, racked up his fifth consecutive assist, though he has now failed to score in his last three matches in all competitions, while Diogo Jota (£7.5m) struggled to make an impact in the absence of Roberto Firmino (£8.9m), and was replaced by Origi when Liverpool needed a goal.

“So, yeah, first half completely in control of the game, anyway 1-0 down because of a set-piece. We scored the equaliser – a wonderful goal – and were really in control and in charge of the game. Obviously West Ham play really good stuff this season but today it was a bit more like the old West Ham – sitting deep, going for set-pieces and counter-attacks. In the first half we didn’t let that happen apart from one, I think, set-piece, if I’m 100 per cent right, at least where they scored the goal. Then second half we lost balls in general, we lost more balls than in the first half. They scored from a counter-attack and from a set-piece; the second one was exceptionally well taken and a great, fantastic finish from Zouma. But that all shouldn’t have happened because we should have controlled the game still in the second half. For whatever reason, it looked for me a little bit like we lost patience, it was like we didn’t have enough clear-cut chances so we wanted to change the wrong things. Actually, our passing changed too early, we had to do that higher up the pitch, then you are better protected. Then we were in the situations where we lost the balls.     Bowen in has Lingard written all over it for me.
    He’s doing great, looking really threatening, good stats…
    As soon as o bring him in he’ll do diddly squat and start dropping in price.

      Fixtures are the problem with Bowen and West Ham.

      I just don't see huge hauls in his next 5 games.

          No but when Gallagher and ESR are alternatives with better fixtures, I think I'd rather go there. And Raphinha is also showing his consistency. It's hard to get rid for a guy who has City and Chelsea in the next 4.

      West Ham seem fixture proof right now but have a great run from GW16

        Wilf is an interesting one. He's playing very narrow and is getting close to oop territory.

        Think he's the Palace mid of choice if you have cash to burn. One thing is Palace aren't actually creating too too many chances. Domination of possession and territory is putting almost all opponents into a form of a low block which is proving hard to break down. Ideally with Zaha you want teams to come out and leave him space.

        Not for me. I was putting out other fires for how ever many GW’s.
        Then I finally got a chance to bring him in & that was that. The returns dried up & I lost about 0.2 before I sold him…

      Since I transferred him out he hasn't stopped scoring points. I got Bowen over Benrahma because he looked like a better asset. I thought I had made a mistake but now it looks like I lacked patience.

    Wonder if the absence of Coufal has added to Bowen by giving him more of the threat down that wing. They do play on the same side no?

    Personally thought Benny looked great against Liverpool and with a full bench quite happy to hold him for the time being for better times ahead.

      I like those transfers - even the hit for James is no biggie in the long term.
      But it’s the IB now, no way I’m taking any hits until I see the pressers in a week and a half.
      Imagine doing those transfers and then Raph, Salah & Kane come back flagged after the IB. You’d be fuming with yourself

        The probability that at least one player gets injured and needs to go is so high, that I would wait. If this was normal gw, not itb, I would recommend to act.

    Anyone think Jesus is worth a punt ahead of Kane (reluctant owner). Really thought Spurs would cause Everton problems as they were shocking against Wolves the previous week

    Not convinced fixtures are as good as people make out & Spurs are just not creating at all

      Like him - especially if you want a 8 mill placeholder in attack and have bench. I'm assuming his PL run of starts will falter a bit when fixture congestion kicks in

      I think with Spurs easier fixtures coming up, I’d hold Kane - plus best to see how the international break goes

      The problem with Jesus is once you get him Pep could stick him on the bench. I’m okay with just having Cancelo and Foden from city.

        I have Cancelo and Jesus. Both Foden and Jesus have been unlucky. What I fear is that since Foden and Jesus belong to best XI, I expect them to be rotated at same time. Or there is strong possibility for it to happen. So having Cancelo, Foden, Jesus, Chilly and James during busy Xmas period is a bit scary. But upside is high also.

      I think you have to gamble on at least one Spurs attacker. Those fixtures are there to be taken advantage of.

        Kane eh!
        I seem to be the only one on the fence about him.
        Most people are either very much pro-Kane and think the fixtures will bring the old Kane back. Or they are anti-Kane and think he’s done playing for Spurs.

        I really don’t know - and no more Spurs games to help me decide!

          plenty are on the fence. The fixtures are so enticing though. I guess it depends on how much faith you have in Conte, to turn things around

        Not sure Leeds is anything other than neutral and Burnley isn't that good either. Brentford and Norwich look better for timing but are a way away still. They've only been clattered by elite attacks and right now Spurs are the inverse of that.

          Leeds and Burnley are unquestionably good fixtures. Burnley should really have let in a hatful against Chelsea and Leeds have always been a bit leaky.

          They are 4 of the best fixtures for an attacker. You can not like Spurs options, but it's also incorrect to turn around and rationalize that their fixtures are tough as a justification for overlooking them.

            Have you checked recent Leeds defensive form and stats and thought about the impact of the return of their first choice defence?

            Your argument would appear to be we MUST pick Spurs because of the fixtures.

            Just querying it and raising another point of view - that imminent fixtures were not golden. Obvs a mistake 🙂

              My argument is that it's fine to dislike Spurs options because Son and Kane are not putting up good stats/performances.

              But to say the fixtures aren't as good as they look is not correct. They are definitely favorable and hence why I think it's worth the 'gamble' and I call it as such.

                Can't be bothered to argue but I do seem to recall that Leeds were deemed to be a must target team last season on the basis of early season form and that very much didn't work out.

                Okay fixtures no more on defensive form. Happy to wait but perverse of me naturally to have an opinion that differs

      I’ve sold him - personally feel the bubble has burst with Brentford lately, coupled with Newcastle’s potential new manager bounce I couldn’t see much gain in holding

      I will give him Newcastle. Good fixture anyway. No money itb so nothing obvious that I could do without -4. Planning to save ft, but during itb easier said than done.

    Ben White has been superb in real life and FPL terms since he came back in GW4. Glad I held him. Newcastle at home is another good game to start him in. Chips in with bonus a bit which I didn't expect.

      Lost him the other week which is a shame, but unless the game lets us have more than 5 Defs, then no room for him at the minute. Maybe if Chelsea's wheels fall off or Livra becomes a mere mortal... much can be done about it.

    Everybody wanted double Brentford attack for the fix, even tho they had like 0,3 returns per game combined.

    But nobody want Spurs attack for their fixures, because of one goalless draw in Contes first pl game?

      Cheap assets often get more love than premium ones irrespective of form, look at Mane for example.

        I agree, but Mane is too expensive, hard to fit in.

        What baffles med tho is how much the consensus in the crowd changes based on 1 game. Last week everybody wanted Brentford and were planning to get Spurs after. Now ppl look to ditch their Brentforders already, and not bring in Spurs players.

      I'm still getting Son next week. I'm a Spurs fan and cannot stand watching us anymore without owning either Son or Kane. With Conte and those fixtures I expect better performances and goals.

          I love Reggy's energy on and off the pitch but he's a headless chicken at times with no composure in defence or attack. Royale might be a good alternative. Will be a while before I trust a Spurs defender in FPL.

              Very small sample but I think Royale looked decent the last two. He also put a nice ball in for Moura to score v Burnley in the league cup. He's got potential in a 343/352.

    I have said it before, but spoke to Bowen briefly when he was at Hull.
    After a midweek match, in which he had scored, he was standing on his own outside Craven Cottage waiting for their driver to come and open the Hull team coach.
    Was very polite, though possibly doesn't wash properly after games as he was out so long before anybody else.

        Curious if the parameters change as the season unfolds but the key would appear to be stay below a GW rank of 4 mill or so. I'm generally a bit of a specialist in very red arrows

      Not as simple as that i reckon PAM.......Kane makes it much easier to move to Lukaku or probably Ronaldo come the onset of those juicy Utd fixtures so far from a wasted forward slot. I don't think it's wise to write of the England Capt either tbf. Historical returns of course don't guarantee future returns but an up for it, motivated Kane under a manager like Conte screams returns to me.

    Aubameyang (c) still hurts like hell and everybody in my whole squad outscored him except Sánchez.

    Well, at least he didn't get a red card so I should consider myself lucky I guess. His bad day at the office really came at the worst possible time.

    1FT and 1.9 ITB.

    My initial plan was to rid of Havertz this GW for Son which would mean I have to take a -4 as I don't currently have the funds.

    Alternatively, I could do Havertz to the likes of Foden and move Vardy to Kane should he pick up some form in the coming weeks?

    Any suggestions are much appreciated!

      Not sure that Son / Kane is worth going for myself.
      Havertz > Foden is interesting to me, or one of Gallagher/ESR if you want to bank a little cash for later.

      Doesn’t seem like you need a hit just now, certainly don’t need a hit for this week i reckon.

      No, it is the midfield. No Gini there so the opposition gets more space to play between hendo and Fabinho which are very good midfielders but they are not the most quick ones, Gini was that cog who brike down the opponents attack even before they begun, now they just sails ahead. Klopp has taken this in the way that well we fint have a Gini to sweep up then we must score more than the opponent kind of style. You want Milner at right back instead?

        Your xi is g2g imo so wiv 2 fts id say you can have a indulgence transfer like the rudi to james/chilly switch mentioned, alternatively id say you could additionally shaft sarr for maybe zaha/Gallagher/ESR/Cornet/Tross
        But id think use 1 and save 1ft is the way to so you have insurance should an injury show up for someone during the international break

        As a fellow Maupay owner, I'm sorry. Team needs a lot of surgery so I think hits required.

        If it were my team I would be inclined to do Azpi + Maupay -> Mitchell + Wilson as a starting point.

            I tried that 3 seasons ago when I was around 4k at this point of the season and I dropped to 40k by Feb. Then went back to playing my own game and ended season at 8k

            I was up around there last year similar time. I didn’t make any plans but the key for me was not to be missing out on key owned players and 2-3 lowish owned to move around for fun. Ended up 1.5k.

            Good luck to ya! And for sure make your own decisions - it’s the best way to play.

            If you play template and safe, you will slowly lose rank. Maybe get 50k to 100k OR.
