Mbeumo and Toney: Keep or sell for FPL Gameweek 12? What Scout readers think

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 11 Scout Notes with analysis of Brentford v Norwich City.

Brentford 1-2 Norwich City

  • Goals: Rico Henry (£4.5m) | Mathias Normann (£4.5m), Teemu Pukki (£5.8m)
  • Assists: Saman Ghoddos (£5.3m) | None
  • Bonus: Henry x3, Normann x3, Pukki x3

MBEUMO/TONEY: KEEP OR SELL?

Mbeumo and Toney 2

Owners of Ivan Toney (£6.7m) and/or Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) had a fleeting moment of joy on Saturday when the pair linked up to beat Tim Krul (£4.5m), only for VAR to play spoilsport and belatedly spot an offside on the ‘out of position’ FPL midfielder.

A case of fine margins and a Sliding Doors moment as overdue attacking returns consequently became hysteria-provoking blanks: for all their promising underlying numbers, it’s now six games without a goal for Toney and two returns in 10 appearances for Mbeumo.

We’re now two-thirds of the way through what was deemed to be an irresistible fixture run for the Bees but Burnley and Norwich City have seen off Thomas Frank’s hipsters’ favourites, and now even a trip to Tyneside is perhaps not the favourable match-up it previously looked given that Newcastle United will be buoyed by the appointment of Eddie Howe.

Toney and Mbeumo are suffering a small number of net transfers out ahead of Gameweek 12 overall but owners polled on our website are generally keeping the faith, with over 75% of responders retaining the full complement of Brentford attacking assets in their squads.

Newcastle are, it should be said, one of two clubs still without a clean sheet in 2021/22 and have conceded more big chances than any other side in the division. Might the adrenaline rush provided by Howe’s appointment, plus the adoption of what will likely be a more attacking shape, open up even more gaps at the back on Tyneside? It’s a straw to clutch for existing owners of Toney and Mbeumo but further blanks against another Premier League whipping boy would surely signal a wider exodus.

INJURIES TO BLAME?

Brentford have now lost four league games on the bounce, although it’s only really the last two where anything other than defeat was expected.

Injuries aren’t helping.

Thomas Frank was able to name more or less the same team in the first six Gameweeks, with 10 of his 11 starters ever-presents in that time and just one central midfield spot showing any change.

Since then, the Bees have lost first-choice goalkeeper David Raya (£4.5m), right-sided centre-half Kristoffer Ajer (£4.5m), central midfielders Vitaly Janelt (£5.0m) and Shandon Baptiste (£4.9m), and, briefly, Mbeumo to injury.

Added to that is a recurring hip problem that seems to be affecting Ethan Pinnock‘s (£4.7m) performance levels and, as of Saturday, a fresh issue for Ajer’s deputy, Zanka (£4.5m).

“I don’t know about Zanka’s injury – he got a minor one in training on Friday so I don’t know if it was the same one that stopped him continuing or another one. I will find out on Monday.

“We’ve been very unlucky with injuries so far, I think we have some of the most (in the Premier League). I think I have a fantastic medical staff so I think it’s been very very unlucky with the injuries we’ve got.” – Thomas Frank

The playing budget defender klaxon was sounded with the introduction of Charlie Goode (£3.9m) for Zanka, although the Bees’ current defensive woes – no clean sheets in six – do make investment in their backline less appealing than it did a month or two ago.

There are parallels with Sheffield United, who excelled in a largely injury-free debut Premier League campaign under Chris Wilder before fitness issues ravaged the squad in their relegation season. While Brentford are somewhere in the middle of those two extremes, injuries won’t be helping; the loss of Raya’s distribution skills and sweeper-keeping are particularly damaging at either end of the field.

NORGAARD: THE POUNDSHOP SOUCEK

Brentford are actually an eye-catching third for goal attempts and shots in the box over the last five Gameweeks. Look a little closer, though, and over half of their 76 efforts during this period have come from set plays.

Only six sides have a lower expected goals (xG) tally from open play in Gameweeks 7-11 but no-one can come close to matching the Bees’ xG total from set plays.

Brentford’s centre-backs have contributed a lot to that shot count but top of the pile over the last four Gameweeks is Christian Norgaard (£5.0m), a defensive midfielder by trade but a bit of a dead-ball magnet and emergency targetman when Frank’s side are attempting to claw back a deficit.

Norgaard can’t be beaten for goal attempts, shots in the box, big chances or xG by any of his teammates in these last four matches, with two gilt-edged opportunities from point-blank range testing Krul’s reflexes on Saturday alone.

Above: Christian Norgaard trails only Mohamed Salah for goal attempts among FPL midfielders in the last four Gameweeks

NORWICH PLAYERS TO MONITOR UNDER THEIR NEW MANAGER

Mbeumo and Toney 3

As for Brentford’s conquerors, Norwich City strangely chose the aftermath of their first victory of the season to dismiss manager Daniel Farke.

Frank Lampard currently leads the bookies’ market to replace the sacked German but whoever is appointed in the Carrow Road hotseat, they face a battle to win the faith of FPL managers given what the Canaries have served up not just this season but in their previous campaign in the top flight in 2019/20.

There are names to monitor. The set-piece-taking Milot Rashica (£5.2m) has had eight shots – the joint-best among FPL midfielders – since returning to the starting XI in Gameweek 10, while Saturday goalscorer Mathias Normann (£4.5m) loves a crack at goal from distance and is arguably the pick of the £4.5m-and-under midfielders.

Above: £4.5m-and-under midfielders sorted by goal attempts in 2021/22

Billy Gilmour (£4.4m) could come back into the thinking for bench fodder duties if Lampard is appointed, while Teemu Pukki (£5.8m) is, for all his profligacy from open play, on spot-kicks for the Canaries and was on target from 12 yards against Brentford.

The truth is, however, that Norwich are bottom of the table for a reason. FPL managers will want an audition period to see if Farke’s successor can transform the East Anglian club into anything other than also-rans and once that ‘wait and see’ chapter is over, the fixtures aren’t great thereafter.

Brentford: Fernandez, Jorgensen (Goode 12′), Jansson, Pinnock, Canos, Janelt (Ghoddos 46′), Norgaard, Jensen, Henry (Forss 69′), Mbeumo, Toney

Norwich City: Krul, Aarons, Omobamidele, Gibson, Williams, Normann, McLean, Lees-Melou, Dowell (Giannoulis 74′), Pukki (Sargent 78′), Rashica (Idah 90′)

Which option you prefer here please?
    1) Saka to Jota
    2) Mbumo/Vardy to Son/Wilson -4
    3) save FT

I'm so tempted to make bold moves this week. But there's an extremely logical move staring at me that I should make.

    Defense that everyone has/wants
    Salah Foden Raphinha Mbeumo Brownhill
    Kane Antonio Toney

I can do Mbeumo > Gallagher and roll FT again. That is by far the most reasonable transfer. But I also have the option of going all-in on 4-4-2 which opens more exciting choices.

Toney + Mbeumo out > Davis + Any mid up to 8.0m - considering Jota, Gundo, Zaha, Trossard,

They don’t really sound exciting. Not like getting a Bertie Beetle show bag at the local Easter show. Gallagher looks more exciting and you’ll still have two trades down the track to sate any future bouts of excitement.

Gundogan/Bernardo are pretty exciting picks. The fixtures are there for hauls.

Cancelo, Foden & Jesus are ‘exciting’ picks.
Bernardo & Gundo not so much.

I think they’ll do okay though and by no means bad picks.

Gundogan could be one of the best picks in the game. We know what he's capable of after last season, his xGI/90 is 2nd only to Salah. He's likely on pens when Mahrez doesn't start. His average positioning means he's playing often as a 10, false 9 or marauding 8.

I see huge potential. The minutes are a concern admittedly but he's a Bernardo or KdB injury away from becoming essential again imo.

I sold him after Norwich game in rage, for Foden of course, who’s blanked every game since. Typical!

I’d just wait on news of Lukaku. If he’s back then it’s a really easy sell to Jota/Foden/Gallagher/Son etc…

          1, 2, 4, 3 maybe

1st one is a massive upgrade
2nd seems counter intuitive this week, but a good move going forward
3rd one - Vardy is a troll, but has some form this season and look at the fixtures after Chelsea, Kane has shown oil tanker tendencies in the past before, i.e. it will take him a while to turn around
4th - see comments above, much prefer Son to Hazza

Let me make the case for buying Zaha

    1. Crystal palace have good fixtures
    2. They have an increase in chance creation, which leads to more goals, most likely goalscorer? (Zaha)
    3. They are scoring more goals, who is the most likely assister? (Zaha)
    4. He is on penalties
    5. He is a 90 minute man, in teams that are currently filled with rotation uncertainty

Conclusion Zaha is a great FPL option for the upcoming fixtures.

    Ramsdale Foster
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell Rudiger Livramento
Salah Foden Mount Mbuemo D. Luiz
    Vardy Antonio Toney

    A) -4 hit -> Mbuemo and Vardy -> Son and 6.3 (probably Hwang). That way I keep Mount, and later I will be able to swap him for Jota or BSilva.
    B) -4 hit -> Mount and Vardy -> 6.4 Mid (probably Gallagher) and Kane. That will shut down for me easy Mid swaps, but it will enable me to do easy swaps for Ronaldo or Lukaku later on
    C) Something else

Does anyone have any strong opinions regarding Gerrard and Aston Villa?

Personally, I find it slightly perplexing.
The winner of the Scottish Premiership this season goes straight into the UCL group stages (next season).

The risk of not being successful at Villa, to me, would decrease his reputation below a level to that of being an adequate replacement for Liverpool post the Klopp era, which we know is the ultimate aim.

    Non-FPL related, but any thoughts?

I think he should take the Villa job. Who knows how long Klopp will stay at Liverpool. Could be years yet. Villa have some decent players to work with and the owners will likely back him with signings.

If he has confidence in himself then he should. Not how it should be, but Villa finishing top half better for his career than winning in Scotland again.

There's no doubt he wants the Liverpool job some day. Success at Villa would be viable preparation. Success at Rangers with low-standard opposition would not be.

          I understand that thought.
However, Aston Villa's expectations are certainly not an easy meet.

These are ambitious owners that want their club competing in European competitions.
And in doing so must qualify against the "big 6", the likes of West Ham & Leicester + the constant strengthening (Newcastle etc.) of the PL for 6/7 European spots.
I certainly don't think Aston Villa sacked Dean Smith because they didn't think he could finish somewhere between 8-12th.
In my opinion, the expectations and the narrative is someone who can take them beyond this, not an easy gig.

What's the highest-ranking English club that would hire him on his current experience? It makes sense that Lampard is interested in Norwich as improving on his Derby record in the Championship is his level right now. I don't see Gerrard being offered a better gig than Villa, and I'm sure he sees it that way. Whether or not Purslow thinks Gerrard would suit ahead of an available European manager is another matter.

Utd? At least as well qualified as OGS. One obvious issue, but look at who Matt Busby played for (granted in a different era of course).

Lampard reportedly wasn't interested in the Palace gig over the summer. Guess he thought they would struggle in the championship next season 🙂

He might actually be a decent fit at Norwich. Bit of a comedown of course. I imagine he's eying something bigger.

Think he might have been okay. Werner Havertz and Ziyech aside he was no disaster at Chelsea.

Avoiding Nuno was the real blessing. Not sure how close he came as he didn't fit the proposed set up of developing youth via the academy and more dynamic football one little bit.

He may be eyeing something bigger but I would be very surprised if Norwich were to hire Lampard.
As per the reports, Knutsen is more the ilk I think they'd consider.

Personally, I would stay at Rangers with, evidently the aim to win the league and qualify for the Champions League. I would also like to think he has a sense of gratitude to them for giving him his first job in management.
18 months longer, in that position would be the correct decision for me.

As for the highest-ranking English club, I would suggest Leicester.
Rodgers to me seems like the kind of manager that the Manchester United hierarchy would be accepting of hiring, so maybe an opening comes up there. Hiring Gerrard would be a risk, of course, however, club profile wise it may be appealing. Possibly not.

The Villa squad is also a really nice prospect imo. There's a reason why everyone was all over them preseason. Get them into a recognisable shape and organised and there's heaps of potential there. Think I'd rather that squad than the Spurs one.

Guess it depends where you stand on Ndombele etc in midfield. To me it looks one of the weakest and poorest balanced midfields in the league - not just among those aiming for top 6. Moura is the only one I wouldn't shift out personally.

I think, exactly how Conte has it, Hojbjerg and Skipp sitting & your 3 CBs is your defensive 5.
Then the WBs & the front 3 are your attacking 5 outlets.

Ole is a legend in MU history(as a player), did a great job to rebuild the team after Mourinho and has gathered a great group of players. But he's done what he can for the team, never expected him to win anything huge sadly.. But that's the truth, someone else need to step in as soon as possible.

This would also be great for us FPL managers with those run of fixtures coming up for MU.

Kane seems ambitious - he's looked off the pace for England and not just Spurs. Would personally go Son first if you're sold on Spurs. Plenty of time to shift money up top if you want Ron down the line.

A more daring option would be to go Ron now with a view to Auba in 13. I'd suggest Watford Newcastle was significantly better than Leeds Burnley.

Would have Cornet over Bowen personally.

Yeah I agree Kane is simply a punt based on his quality and the new manager, I've had Son the past few weeks and not sure about him either based on the stats. Really tempted by Ronaldo! Cornet could be an interesting differential, thanks.

My best season was when I almost knew beforehand who I should pick because they were consistent and not a gamble, basically played it safe and boring but got to top 3k or something like that.
