Learning from ‘The Great and The Good’ FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 12

Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini-league winner Les Caldwell.

“Life is like a game, there are many players. If you don’t play with them, they’ll play with you.”

The FPL Squid Games continued with Dean Smith, Steve Bruce, Nuno Espirito Santo and Daniel Farke losing the managerial tug of war, a red light not a green light for our Brentford players and owners of Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) losing their marbles with his sending off.

In all the excitement, we have a new front man for The Great and The Good in Az, whilst others faced elimination due to VIP party spoilers Norwich and Burnley but who will be contestant number 456 and win the pig filled with cash?

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Az was the secret inspector in Gameweek 11 with an impressive 75 points which sees him reach the top of the table, thanks to an impressive defensive performance from the fabulous threesome of Joao Cancelo (£6.4m), Reece James (£5.9m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m).

The Blackbox host has also been canny in his purchase of Arsenal assets with Aaron Ramsdale (£4.7m) and Emile Smith-Rowe (£5.8m) delivering for him yet again, entering the top 10k for the first time this season.

Joe also scored a creditable 70 with his faith in Adam Armstrong (£5.9m) paying off, Geoff Dance was only a point behind thanks to his smart purchase of Conor Gallagher (£5.8m) – now the fifth-highest point scorer this season – and Yavuz is making a comeback by moving up 139,000 places. Could an eighth successive top 10k finish still be on?

A new game was introduced this week called ‘Bench Bother’, as members of The Great and The Good competed to leave as many points on the bench as possible, with an average of 18.1 between them.

FPL Matthew and FPL General shared the dishonour with 26 benched points as messers Ben Foster (£4.0m), Ben White (£4.4m) and Tino Livramento (£4.5m) ended up doing just fine whilst on their pine.

TRANSFERS

This is a summary of the transfers for this week :

Az – None

LTFPL Andy – None

Fabio Borges – Sanchez (Raya)

Joe Lepper – Chilwell (Christensen)

Geoff Dance – Toney, James (Antonio, Tierney)

FPL General – Son, White (Dias, Mount)

Les Caldwell – Smith-Rowe, Alexander-Arnold (Son, Alonso)

Magnus Carlsen – Toney (Antonio)

Mark Sutherns – None

FPL Matthew – None

Neale Rigg – None

Tom Freeman – Sanchez (Raya)

Tom Stephenson – Jota (Raphinha)

Yavuz Kabuk – None

Zophar – Jota (Raphinha)

The variance went against Tom Freeman and Fabio Borges who picked the wrong week to make a goalkeeper change, as Sanchez proved to be less than a safe pair of fans with his sending off, just as they brought him in for an injured David Raya (£4.5m).

Elsewhere, Les Caldwell continues his uncanny knack of timing his moves as he brought in the double-barrelled double-digit scoring Smith-Rowe and Alexander-Arnold.

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows with number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:-

Foster (11), Ramsdale/Sanchez (6)

Alexander-Arnold (14), Cancelo (13), Livramento (12), Rudiger/Chilwell/James (5)

Salah (15), Raphinha (12), Foden (10), Mbeumo (10), Brownhill (7)

Antonio (13), Toney (11), Vardy (10)

Some small tweaks to the template, with three Chelsea defenders scrapping it out for the fourth and fifth spot, Sanchez comes in but will probably go out again and it’s worth noting that the template forward line failed to score this weekend.

KING OF THE TRANSFER

A deep dive this week into the season transfer activity of The Great and The Good, showing not only the immediate success of the transfers but also the spread across their squads:

Andy and Magnus lead the way with some high-impact transfers, gaining 64 and 63 points respectively with their moves. We’ll move swiftly past how Mark’s trades have performed so far.

Midfield appears to be this season’s battleground for making advances in the rankings, as 40% of all moves have been in this position.

Defensive moves are of a similar number to forward switches and the importance of getting your back line right is backed up by the stat that three of the top five total scorers this campaign are defenders in the form of James, Alexander-Arnold and Cancelo.

CONCLUSION

A break for us, away from the FPL struggle, as we enter our final international break before entering the hectic festive season.

Already we have seen the requirement for a strong bench, as well as Salah’s domination of the captaincy debate leading to more funds being available elsewhere.

The rotation will only get worse, so best prepare and build your squads. However, also brace yourself for more lost points as there will undoubtedly be a high chance that the added squad depth will cause pain.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now and, remember, don’t have nightmares.

For those affected by any of the topics raised in the above article then you can find me here on Twitter.

I like C - not sure about double Spurs yet. But if Firmino out a few games Jota a good option and Jesus playing well with good fixtures

I'm not writing off Vardy yet. Good bunch of fixtures after Chelsea.
Would prefer Son over Kane, but wouldn't double up and seeing as you already have Kane, probably C.

Was planning to play WC over international break but don’t think I need to. Do you agree and is Havertz to Jota best use of free transfer? Only .4 m in bank. Any other better transfer thoughts welcome?

    What's the move, lads?

    Foster,
    Trent, Rudiger, Coady
    Salah, Saka, Foden, Raphina
    Kane, Jimenez, Antonio

Sanchez, White, Allan, Williams. 0.6 itb.

Thinking of just holding the transfer, then doing Saka & Rudiger to ESR and Cancelo the following week. Thoughts?

I would but most will tell you not to take-4 for defender but attacking potential home v Everton appealing! Leicester could easily get goal at home v Chelsea

    2. Boberella
      • 7 Years

I think you need Cancelo or James in that back line as a priority, so I would look at your suggested move for a hit before next GW. Possibly Gallagher over ESR too if you can afford. Shame you can't do Coady to Cancelo somehow and keep Rudiger

      1. MountainBeach
        • 12 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

Yeah...just unsure about taking a hit for a defender. And yeah, my attack is quite pricey, so I can't go from Coady to Cancelo. Really hoping Kane comes good over the next few weeks. Why do you feel Gallagher over ESR?
Also, I could do Rudiger to James this week and have one of them that way at least. Cancelo is more tempting, though lol.

ESR vs Gallagher is a close one. Immediate fixtures swing slightly to Gallagher, but both are in good form. Ideally have both!!
I'm not sold on Kane at all. Lot of money for an as yet unproven performer this season. Looks way off to me.

If I had your team, I'd be planning something like Kane to Jesus, Coady to Cancelo, with Saka and Allan to Gallagher and ESR.

Hi all, hope you're all doing well.

    Quick poll please..
(Obv waiting for IB to be over as I should still be able to afford any of these by then)

    Havertz to:
    a) Bernardo
    b) Trossard
    c) Cornet
    d) Bowen

To free up funds to do (for -4 a hit)
    1) Rudiger to Cancelo
    2) Williams to Reguillon

    Team is
    Steele (Sanchez)
    TAA Rudi James Livra (Williams)
    Salah Son Havertz Gallagher (ESR)
    Vardy Jimi (Dennis)

    1FT 0.3 itb

Any feedback would be highly appreciated, thanks guys.

Bench the Brentford boys that aren’t scoring.

Play Livra (consistent returns) and Antonio (team is scoring).

At least if they blank there’s solid reasoning behind why you did it.

Yeah I might just keep Sanchez and Steele - Brighton fixtures also fine.
Nailing the midfield is so tough:
        So many I want:
Salah, Son, Foden, Gallagher, Raph, ESR, Jota all excellent options.

That's a good WC. Perfect backline, Reguillon could be gold and I'm looking at getting him myself. I think you've got the MID right based on your options too. Antonio should fire up again but some upcoming fixtures aren't exactly amazing so not 100% on him on a WC.

Cheers for the reply. Had Antonio since GW1 so a lot of value tied up, and I go by the adage of “if Antonio’s fit, make sure he’s in your team”. Still think West Ham will score plenty over next few.

Broken down individually what are peoples thought. I have also considered doing rudiger to James last two weeks but decided against doing for a hit which was with hindsight the wrong move. But now I really feel like he won’t outscore Rudiger by 4 this week ha. But Leicester are leaky. Any of these worth the hit? I’m very much of the never take a hit for a defender etc but Trent and James are delivering every week.
    Rudiger to James (-4)
Coady to Trent (benching livra) (-4)
    Smith Rowe to Gallagher (-4)
My thoughts are to do the top 2 and take a -8
    Giving
    Steele
    Cancelo James TAA
    ESR Salah Raph Foden Jota
    Kane Antonio.
    Thanks all

    1. Boberella
      • 7 Years

Yeah, Trent is essential. James is in top form and becoming essential. I'd prioritise Trent first though as Rudiger is still Chelsea cover this GW and is due an attacking return.
Don't think I'd lose ESR for Gallagher I'd want both. See how Raph goes.

Wouldn’t take hit for James with Leicester away - the week after should be fine.
Coady to TAA does look tasty, but doubt TAA will outscore Livra by 5+ next week.
Personally think I’d hold, unless it looks like you’ll be priced out.

No. He's in great form for Leeds and Brazil. Leeds will only improve as their injured players return.

no ‘need’ to sell because he is a good option, but you may want to sell if your team structure needs it or you just fancy a change

Personally I find players like Raph are great value enablers

I am all lined up for Raph > Son, got perfect money itb.
Buuuuut I’m feeling like I won’t do it right now. Unless IB makes me think otherwise, which is certainly possible.

A keeper for me, but probably first bench next week. Chances of Leeds improving seems higher than Raph dipping, too?! Saka, though, he’ll have to go… I think (see below)

Loosing sleep over Son! Would like to get him in for fixtures and possible manager bounce. Form and structure of my team makes it difficult though. 1FT, 0.1 ITB. Any ideas?

    Sanchez/Steele
    TAA/Cancelo/James/Chilwell/Livra
    Salah/Raph/Gallagher/Saka/Gilmour
    Vardy/Jimi/Antonio

    1) Vardy and Saka to Son and someone to Toney or Pukki for a hit
    2) As above but with a downgrade in defence to go for Son and Wilson for a double hit
    3) Leave Son out for now, keep Vardy and just shift Saka to a Bowen/Cornet/Trossard for a FT
    4) Any other ideas?

A bit early in the gameweek to be sleepless, though… cheers!

      Wouldn’t do the double hit.
Do you want to keep Saka?

If yes what about Vardy > 4.5 and Gilmour > Son?
If not then I think you should do Saka > Son and Vardy > Broja. Basically as cheap as you can. You have decent depth with Livramento this week - then use that extra cash to go Gilmour > 6.0ish next week maybe.

I am not too keen on keeping Saka much longer, no. I had ESR from the start, but screwed it up somehow along the way. Hadn’t thought about going all basement on a third striker, though, but it does makes some sense with how they are all preforming at the moment. Will most def look into it. (But Vardy will come back to haunt me, though…)

0,1 off the Vardy/Gilmour to Son/Broja, so would have to throw in Saka to Cornet or back to ESR as well. A bit excessive? Could do the double switch by going for Archer or Gelhardt, though.

    Saka | Havertz | Foden | Salah | Benrhama
    Vardy | Antonio | Scarlett

2 FTs 0.2 ITB. Suggestions on what I should do here? Happy to do a mini wildcard with -4 or -8!

Coady to James financed by two or all three of these? Saka to Gallagher, Havertz to Jota, Benrahma to ESR

Yeah my thinking was similar. Downgrading Havertz would help finance the James/Chilwell move but then the question of Son comes in too and feel with Chelsea fixtures, I may have already lost quite a lot of the James/Chilwell points. Was considering Havertz + Vardy > Son + Wilson as well

Stick with Vardy for another few gws?

I'm thinking Son and Wilson in are looking good options. Have Sanchez to sort too though. Still have my WC which affects things too.
Here are some options how to play things this GW. What do we reckon?
    1. Benrahma + Vardy out and leave the keeper as is.
    2. Gray + Vardy out + hit to change Bachmann-> Foster/Steele who will play next GW. Steele allows extra cash and his fixture is better.
    3. Something else.

    Sanchez**
    TAA, Chilwell, Cancelo, Livramento.
    Salah, Raphinha, Benrahma.
    Vardy, Jimenez, Antonio.
    Bachmann**, Rudiger, Gray, Bissouma.
    2ft, 1.1 ITB. WC. OR about 45k.

I’d probably replace Gray and Benrahma before replacing Vardy. Makes it hard to get to both Son and Wilson, though. In similar dilemma, see above.

    Raph or Gallagher guys?

There is no doubt both are excellent players.
Raphina has been playing on his own and 2 goals have been fortunate.
Gallagher plays a deeper roll and top offensive players returning for Palace. Gallagher could move into McArthur's spot.

With Eze expected back in GW13 and Olise lurking would it be a better idea to hold off Gallagher if you don’t already have him?

Palace are tricky. I want a midfielder but am torn between those 3, or maybe I want a forward but both Benteke and Edouard are looking good. I'm still waiting for one to emerge as a clear favourite.

No. Get him. If he doesn't perform sell him. He's cheap gold in this form and Palace playing great ball.
