Learning from ‘The Great and The Good’ FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 12

Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini-league winner Les Caldwell.

“Life is like a game, there are many players. If you don’t play with them, they’ll play with you.”

The FPL Squid Games continued with Dean Smith, Steve Bruce, Nuno Espirito Santo and Daniel Farke losing the managerial tug of war, a red light not a green light for our Brentford players and owners of Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) losing their marbles with his sending off.

In all the excitement, we have a new front man for The Great and The Good in Az, whilst others faced elimination due to VIP party spoilers Norwich and Burnley but who will be contestant number 456 and win the pig filled with cash?

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Az was the secret inspector in Gameweek 11 with an impressive 75 points which sees him reach the top of the table, thanks to an impressive defensive performance from the fabulous threesome of Joao Cancelo (£6.4m), Reece James (£5.9m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m).

The Blackbox host has also been canny in his purchase of Arsenal assets with Aaron Ramsdale (£4.7m) and Emile Smith-Rowe (£5.8m) delivering for him yet again, entering the top 10k for the first time this season.

Joe also scored a creditable 70 with his faith in Adam Armstrong (£5.9m) paying off, Geoff Dance was only a point behind thanks to his smart purchase of Conor Gallagher (£5.8m) – now the fifth-highest point scorer this season – and Yavuz is making a comeback by moving up 139,000 places. Could an eighth successive top 10k finish still be on?

A new game was introduced this week called ‘Bench Bother’, as members of The Great and The Good competed to leave as many points on the bench as possible, with an average of 18.1 between them.

FPL Matthew and FPL General shared the dishonour with 26 benched points as messers Ben Foster (£4.0m), Ben White (£4.4m) and Tino Livramento (£4.5m) ended up doing just fine whilst on their pine.

TRANSFERS

This is a summary of the transfers for this week :

Az – None

LTFPL Andy – None

Fabio Borges – Sanchez (Raya)

Joe Lepper – Chilwell (Christensen)

Geoff Dance – Toney, James (Antonio, Tierney)

FPL General – Son, White (Dias, Mount)

Les Caldwell – Smith-Rowe, Alexander-Arnold (Son, Alonso)

Magnus Carlsen – Toney (Antonio)

Mark Sutherns – None

FPL Matthew – None

Neale Rigg – None

Tom Freeman – Sanchez (Raya)

Tom Stephenson – Jota (Raphinha)

Yavuz Kabuk – None

Zophar – Jota (Raphinha)

The variance went against Tom Freeman and Fabio Borges who picked the wrong week to make a goalkeeper change, as Sanchez proved to be less than a safe pair of fans with his sending off, just as they brought him in for an injured David Raya (£4.5m).

Elsewhere, Les Caldwell continues his uncanny knack of timing his moves as he brought in the double-barrelled double-digit scoring Smith-Rowe and Alexander-Arnold.

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows with number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:-

Foster (11), Ramsdale/Sanchez (6)

Alexander-Arnold (14), Cancelo (13), Livramento (12), Rudiger/Chilwell/James (5)

Salah (15), Raphinha (12), Foden (10), Mbeumo (10), Brownhill (7)

Antonio (13), Toney (11), Vardy (10)

Some small tweaks to the template, with three Chelsea defenders scrapping it out for the fourth and fifth spot, Sanchez comes in but will probably go out again and it’s worth noting that the template forward line failed to score this weekend.

KING OF THE TRANSFER

A deep dive this week into the season transfer activity of The Great and The Good, showing not only the immediate success of the transfers but also the spread across their squads:

Andy and Magnus lead the way with some high-impact transfers, gaining 64 and 63 points respectively with their moves. We’ll move swiftly past how Mark’s trades have performed so far.

Midfield appears to be this season’s battleground for making advances in the rankings, as 40% of all moves have been in this position.

Defensive moves are of a similar number to forward switches and the importance of getting your back line right is backed up by the stat that three of the top five total scorers this campaign are defenders in the form of James, Alexander-Arnold and Cancelo.

CONCLUSION

A break for us, away from the FPL struggle, as we enter our final international break before entering the hectic festive season.

Already we have seen the requirement for a strong bench, as well as Salah’s domination of the captaincy debate leading to more funds being available elsewhere.

The rotation will only get worse, so best prepare and build your squads. However, also brace yourself for more lost points as there will undoubtedly be a high chance that the added squad depth will cause pain.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now and, remember, don’t have nightmares.

For those affected by any of the topics raised in the above article then you can find me here on Twitter.

    Ramsdale Foster

Thinking of possibly Vardy and Mbeumo to Foden and Wilson?

2ft and 0.1 itb, nothing seems pressing so appreciate some thoughts, the following four are on my mind

    A) hwang to broja(or fodder) and float
    B) hwang and jansson to James and fodder
    C) hwang and Toney to broja and Wilson
    D) hwang and jansson to regi and broja

    Foster
    Chilly Cancelo Trent
    Son Salah jota foden Mbeumo
    Toney Antonio

    Sanchez livra jansson hwang

One of the Jansson moves I think. Despite fixtures the Brentford defence looks like it's dropped with the Raya injury and others

    Current team:

    Mendy Foster
    TAA Cancelo Dias James Livra
    Salah Havertz Raph Mbeumo Luiz
    Vardy Armstrong Toney

Early thoughts on this IB are to use my 2 FTs for Vardy & Havertz -> Kane & Jota. Not convinced by Mbeumo, Toney or Amstrong for much longer but feel like Kane & Jota could have big immediate upside and the Brentford boys are worth another chance against Newcastle.

    Any better moves out there?

Looking at possibly bringing in Gallagher, do you think he will keep his 'floating' spot with Eze being possibly available after the IB?

What position will Eze play? LW? Thats where Zaha is right now, cant see him getting in there.

        • 5 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

        Not really.

Zaha and Edouard are playing inside left and right and occasionally going wider with Tekkers central. The thought is that they will keep that formation for low block sides.

Gallagher and Macca have similar roles just that MacArthur tends to hold station more to allow Gallagher to break into the box.

Eze could well replace MacArthur which would restrict Gallagher somewhat as he'd have greater defensive duties. Or Eze might just feature in a more forward role either wider or just behind Edouard and Zaha.

Thanks, thats interesting to see where Eze fits into this set up, class player and I hope the injury hasnt impacted him too much.

Still remember that wonder goal he scored last season running most of the pitch!

Do you think Tekkers is no1 CF? Or will Edouard get his chance there more regularly?

Top player. As a West Ham fan I think it was a toss up between Eze and Benrahma who we went for. Seeing Eze play for Palace I thought we had made the wrong move initially, glad to see Benrahma has settled in now.

I think PV will be a good manager for him too to push on, good luck to him.

Pretty sure Edouard is the starter if there's only one on the pitch. He's looked really sharp. Tekkers next to certain to play against Burnley as he defo does a job but my guess is the Villa Leeds United Everton run will see Edouard central and not wider. Should be more space in those games and less call for Tekkers hold up play.

Over the next few weeks I want to get son and Wilson.

    Which route sounds best:
1 - 4pt hit this week selling vardy and townsend for son and broja (benched with livra) and then toney to Wilson next week
2 - vardy to Wilson this week and then a 4pt hit next week selling townsend and toney for son and broadband
3 - do the 3 transfers over 3 weeks for free

Feels like 2 is a bad option and 3 will miss out on some good fixtures and price changes.
I like option 1 although I don't like taking hits...

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

Don't take a hit to bring in a player you're going to bench. I'd go with 3 or even try roll your FT this week and see how things are once the next GW ends, will be a bit more flexible for you

      1. ebb2sparky
        • 13 Years
        2 years, 5 months ago

In my mind the hit is for Son rather than Broja but I hear what you’re saying. My biggest concern is Vardy. I only bought him since he seemed a sensible replacement for the injured Lukaku and now he has Chelsea next. I’d have been better off keeping an injured Lukaku and getting livra in off my bench for all his recent points!

You are right that saving the FT would probably be the wisest choice. Whether I do that or not is another question though!

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 5 months ago

I get the point and it makes sense, I just think it could go wrong (Spurs still need to pick things up, and Broja will likely be rotated especially with Armstrong picking up form right at the point where I looked like he'd lose his place to Broja). If you're convinced the hit will pay off for Son v Leeds or feel they're both moves you'll stick with for a while then I wouldn't rule it out. I get the Vardy issue too, did the very same and even though he has decent fixtures after Chelsea he often goes on these bad runs after his good runs sometimes and I can't trust Leicester in any game. Even with Spurs still looking poor in front of goal I'm still considering moving him to Kane and just hoping the fixtures and time with Conte after the IB will pay off but it also feels risky (less so in your case I'd say as Son is always reliable).

          1. ebb2sparky
            • 13 Years
            2 years, 5 months ago

I agree entirely re it being a risk and I’m definitely not convinced the hit will pay off immediately but I do much prefer the idea of having Son long term rather than Vardy. Annoyingly I had Son in my team during my WC only to be foolish enough to listen to the covid rumours and sell him just before the deadline.

Yes Kane is even riskier but the advantage with him is that it’s only 1 transfer to ronaldo should Utd start to improve

Also, that was a very low-quality game of tackles. No creativity at Spurs; no finishers at Everton. I wouldn't count that CS as a predictor of future defensive performance. Remember Norwich vs Burnley?

Staying off Reguilon for these two reasons and one extra: that early sub from Conte wasn't a good sign

I don't know what the other move is, but the first move here is Dias to Reece, play 4ATB. Everything else depends on that first. Duffy can then become Lamptey if he starts rotating, then Ben Johnson from GW18, then Livra when that West Ham run ends. All as first sub, occasional starters

Reece is a priority when fit

          Full team?

    Reposting!

    Foster | Sanchez
    TAA | Cancelo | Livra | Coady | White
    Saka | Havertz | Foden | Salah | Benrhama
    Vardy | Antonio | Scarlett

2 FTs 0.2 ITB. What would you do? Lots of options to consider, not really sure which direction to go in.

    A) Havertz + Coady > Cornet/Gallagher + James
    B) Havertz + Vardy > Son + Wilson
    C) Havertz + Vardy + Coady > Son + Wilson + James -4
    D) Benrhama > Cornet/Gallagher
    E) Benrhama + Saka > Cornet/Gallagher + ESR

    SCOUT STATS
Over the last four Gameweeks no forward has recorded more shots in the box than Christian Benteke (11).

With Burnley, Aston Villa and Leeds next, are you interested in the Crystal Palace forward?

    This is from twitter.@FFS_Community.

Feel like Benteke is a player I've never owned on FPL, never could trust him. But strikers are so sh*t atm on FPL that I might take a punt on him as my Vardy replacement.

Excuse me. May I take a moment of your time to talk about our lord and saviour, Gabriel Jesus?

Haha.. Have considered him as well, but don't like having strikers that are playing as wingers. I know Peps system is fluent, but it seems like Jesus is playing way more wide lately and not that much in the box as he should.

Would you have felt this way if his last assist was a goal that didn't skid off Foden's thigh, and his last goal wasn't ruled out for a marginal offside?

Yeah I know he was unlucky not to get away with a haul against MU (even said to one of my friends who own GJ that I expect a hattrick because he was up against Shaw who has been hoooooorrible). But still.. Who knows, he might end up in my team Everton at H is a decent match.

              Yup 🙂

I like the season he's having. A forward with good threat for both goals and assists is good, especially when I don't need him as a captain. Nice price too, for 4-3-3

Thanks Ze_Austin, think you might have swayed me towards him as an option. I'm just sick of Vardy (despite only owning him for 3GWs now).

I was also thinking of getting Jesus. Problem is I have Vardy and he has nice fixtures coming up. Would you still get rid of Vardy now (after IB) this would also enable to make other intended moves.

He's playing like Sterling and Sane, not like Bilva. I count his season so far as 4 goals and 4 assists when I'm trying to predict his future returns. Same caveats apply to other assets, like those who got lucky deflections for goals that the keeper had covered

Good points that.. Might make it easier for me to replace Vardy with a "half" premium striker. If I can call Jesus that haha.

That's the point. It's the same way I look at Mbeumo. Predicting based on what happens on the pitch, not what's on the scoreboards

Also a good point haha, if vardy scored just 1 goal the last 3GWs he would be easier to keep. But Vardy has been like a ghost the past 3 matches, even less involved then he usually is when he pops up with a goal.

I captained him once for a double gameweek and i'm sure he scored a brace against Liverpool. Based on this you should definitely make the transfer.

Got him in last season during his good run towards the end of the campaign, only worry I'd have would be gametime with Eze coming back in and Edouard there too of course. If you have nothing else on might not be a bad punt if you're able to take a benching or a couple of 1pt cameos over the next few weeks

Oh that's true... Eze is back very soon, hmm.. That only makes me more insecure about him as a pick.

Edouard is a secure pick for starts imo. Watching the game against Wolves and you'd only want to choose one of them and it wasn't the one starting more centrally. Edouard is starting wider but actually spending a lot of time narrow.

Sold Kane for Tekkers last season and came out miles ahead. 4 goals in 5 games iirc.

(Actually imagine he'll lose his slot after Burnley but there is another Palace froward)

Yeah might wait until Eze is back and see if front three will be. Eze-Edouard-Zaha.

2FT and some serious appealing options. vardy and havertz potentially on the block, and smith rowe plays liverpool away.
    please help a man choose:

1 havertz to son, save 1 FT, play ESR.
2 havertz and vardy to kane and jota for free, play ESR
3 havertz vardy and sisoko (!) to wilson, jota and son -4, bench ESR this week.

Yes - good advice. That was my initial move but James in for White makes a lot of appeal because he is really a cheap midfielder with benefits.

Reece is the one I’d be scared about (white out) - Could fund it with jimi to Hwang (pretty comparable and Norwich gw13) and it gives you a future route of Vardy to lukaku

  26. Gingerman

My international break conundrum is this:

    A. Son and Vardy
    B. Kane and Foden

I think Son is a safer bet than Kane at the moment and Vardy has decent fixtures. But Kane has a better upside I think and makes it easier to jump on Ronaldo or Lukaku when I want. Maybe I should just flip a coin, any opinions?

    1. Jafalad

Son looks more in form than Kane. Kane just doesn't seem to get the service.

I'm leaning towards Son and I also avoid the foden rotation risk, but a couple of Kane hatricks just wouldn't surprise me. Maybe international break injuries will make decisions easier.

Rather than my planned -8 to bring in Son and Kane, I'm thinking Sanchez > Lloris... Thoughts? 1FT and 1.9m ITB

    Sanchez

    TAA, Chilwell, James, Dier

    Salah, Foden, Mbeuno, Sarr

    Jimenez, Wood

Subs: McGovern, Christensen, Vardy, Mendy (Lei)

Is sanchez out for 3? If it's only 1 not to bad. I'd prioritise Son or Kane, not sure both is necessary.

Tempted by the double up because Spurs conceded very few chances vs Spurs. Unsure if that's good defensive or work or Everton on a poor run of form. Cheers!
