The FPL Gameweek 12 preview: Player and team statistics

Our Big Numbers piece looks at the key player and team statistics ahead of Gameweek 12 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

We’ve again run down the stand-out figures in every position for this article, as well as looking at the strengths and weaknesses of various clubs.

These stats all come from our Premium Members’ Area and only subscribers can read the full article; those wishing to sign up to our site and continue reading, as well as see a list of the benefits that Membership brings, can do so by clicking here.

Xhaka and Moura recalled as Ramsdale starts again

+2.80 expected goals prevented (xGP) by Aaron Ramsdale (£4.7m) since making his Arsenal debut in Gameweek 4. Simply put, that means that Ramsdale has conceded 2.8 fewer goals than Opta anticipate he should have, based on the quality of shots faced. During that time, no goalkeeper has kept more clean sheets (five) than the England international, with his 86.2% save percentage only bettered by Edouard Mendy (£6.2m) across the season.

699 touches in the opposition half by Joao Cancelo (£6.5m) in 2021/22. The Portuguese full-back’s total is at least 170 more than any other Premier League defender, while he also leads the way for goal attempts (26), minutes per chance (37.6) and passes received in the final third (262).

8 penalty box touches registered by Tariq Lamptey (£4.4m) against Newcastle United on Saturday, a total only beaten by two other FPL defenders in Gameweek 11. In his first Premier League start of the campaign, the former Chelsea man was effectively deployed ‘out of position’ on the right flank, affording him more attacking freedom, and managed two shots inside the box during his 75-minute run-out.

4 chances created by Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) in his last three matches – that’s six short of what Reece James (£5.9m) has carved out in the same timeframe. The Chelsea left wing-back hasn’t created a big chance in that period; his team-mate on the opposite flank has supplied two.

12 crosses from open play successfully completed by Sergio Reguilon (£5.0m) this season – a figure no other player across all positions can beat. Notably, the Spanish wing-back has a better minutes-per-chance created average than Emerson Royal (£4.9m) (88 v 169), with his recent instructions from new head coach Antonio Conte, asking him to “arrive in the box, help the strikers, score goals and give assists”, encouraging for those moving early.

153 baseline bonus points (BBPS) registered by Marc Guehi (4.5m) across the season so far – only Ethan Pinnock (£4.7m) can better him for that stat amongst all sub-£5.0m defenders. The 21-year-old’s partnership alongside Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) has sparked an upturn in defensive form for the Eagles, with just 11 goals conceded in the 10 matches that they have started together, despite a testing schedule which has seen them travel to West Ham United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City.

2.30 expected assists (xA) recorded by Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) this season, a total only Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.7m) can top amongst all defenders. The recent managerial change at Newcastle United may give his prospects a further boost, having become an integral player under Eddie Howe at Bournemouth, where he was mostly deployed as a winger.

5 goal attempts from inside the six-yard box by Craig Dawson (£4.9m) this season, more than any other defender. That’s despite being afforded just four starts and 441 minutes of action. In light of the anterior cruciate ligament injury to Angelo Ogbonna (£5.0m), Dawson may now be handed an extended run in the starting XI.

    Guaita foster
    TAA cancelo Chilwell duffy livra
    Salah foden raphinha mbeumo normann

Thinking of duffy and toney to James and Dennis.
Not ideal to do it this week, but have 2fts.

What’s your thinking for the Brentford deadly duo?

I have both & will keep for this week but don’t know if I will play both as would mean Livra & Raph on the bench?

Lamptey could be a good option instead off James to give you money to upgrade one of these two dead weights?

Not sure about Dennis. I'd take King instead and wait for better fixtures. Doubling up on chelsea defence might sound great to some, but I'm not a fan.

How about Duffy and Toney to Requilon and ASM/Wood/Edouard?

Yeah that's too bad. I'm very likely to make that move this week.

Could do it by downgrading Duffy or Normann to someone cheaper.

I'm not so sure about a double move for gallagher in. I like him but mbeumo could potentially do something this week.

I'd hold the Brentford pair this week - assuming Newcastle attack then there should be plenty of chances on offer. It's sidewards of course but Chilwell to James is what I'd consider assuming that you're sold on Kane.

Not seeing the point generally of using both this week. I'd prefer to make a double switch post Newcastle Brentford. Mbeumo defo has the fixture on Gallagher this week and personally think there's a certain amount of variance in disparity in returns,

    Salah ° ESR ° Gallagher ° x ° x
    Jiménez ° x ° x

Unsure about the 5 remaining x-players. Please help me out:
    a) Lamptey ° Jota ° 4.5 mid ° Wilson ° Kane
    b) Manquillo ° Jota ° Rice ° Wilson ° Kane

Anything I can improve next week or the week after? I'm thinking of replacing Hwang with a 4.4 and upgrade Brownhill to Smith-Rowe, but I will wait and do it for free. I will try and don't take unnessary hits from now on. I like my current team and transfers so far this season have been not so good. Players I take out immediately scores more then my replacements. It's unfortunate, but when I make a transfer the aim is that the player will produce more then the replacement for totally in the next 6-7 games.

Is this too aggressive? -8 - also annoying as would be free, as only got chilwell prior to GW11.

I wish that was true Tonic. Have you seen his career stats?

11 Goals and 17 Assists in 169 games or a goal involvement every 6 games.

          Prem: 37 games: 0 G, 6 A ( plus 2 in the EFL cup)
          La Liga: 45 games: 2 G, 6 A

          Not exactly prolific...?

Granted this is a new system and Sevilla and Real didn't have Sonny and Kane on the end of all those crosses but for me this one is a wait and see... I'd love it to be true but suspect there may be a bit of straw-clutching at work...?

Currently thinking of moving Vardy to Kane, to give me the following for GW12:

    ................................................................................................Steele
    ...............................................................................TAA Cancelo James Chilwell
    .............................................................................Salah Mbeumo Foden Gallagher
    ...........................................................................................Kane Antonio

    Bench: Sanchez, Livramento, Jiminez, Allan

GTG? I'm ok with benching Jiminez against WHU (even at home) and I *think* Livramento is the one to miss out, but thoughts?

Just caught up with Livra's knock - think thats enough to reassure me he should be benched. I think you're right, Mbeumo would be next in line.

Not a bad thought but there's so much that can happen at United between now and then. The two danger fixtures are Arsenal and Palace at home. On current form you wouldn't take United to win either.

On my radar, but he has annoying price. He is usually not good pick for the cost and I am unwilling to downgrade any good fpl assets for him. He's been usually "almost okay" when I have had him, but sadly just not good enough.

Yeah it’s all dependent on how United look before then and if he’s featuring. Norwich in GW16 though could be great for Rashford.

Is it crazy to just dump all Brentford now and go for it?

    Toney + Mbeumo > Edouard + Gallagher

CPL look really strong and Edouard is a potent differential for this next run of games.

Yes me too. Annoyingly I only brought Mbeumo in last week. Mainly because I was lazy and just saw what other people were doing on here. Would probably have been Gallagher or ESR if not!

Edouard has looked excellent. Good footballer and signs are he finishes well.

Last time out v Wolves he was Palace's best attacker and just variance that the chance fell to Zaha not him. He's playing semi oop for now wider right but actually he's mostly very narrow and that's not as big a concern as it may sound. I'm fairly confident that he will get the CF gig back at some point - most everything points to his being the preferred pick over Benteke if only one plays.

      Not crazy

But think the Brentford pair have much the better fixture this time around. Burnley at home are tricky to break down and have one of there best defensive records in the league at home.

Benteke I think is almost certain to be central again given low block Burnley and his worth in defending set pieces. Edouard I think will be a better call from Villa onwards where there is a run of fixtures where his pace will be more valuable centrally. Could also be that Eze is in line for a start from Villa onwards and that will improve attack but may push Gallagher back a fair bit and take him off set pieces.

Should add that Palace attack is all potential right now. They are dominating all comers bar top 3 but not actually creating too much. They could yet be as frustrating as Brentford when they get favourable fixtures.

I think that's a pair of hate transfers that are the kind that are most likely to backfire. It is Newcastle and if Brentford is to get something, it's likely that those two or either of them gets something.

I have little else to do at the moment though and have 2 FTs. Let's see what happens over the break. Not that much point planning extensively I think while the IB is in full flow.

Yea, I have same feeling. I feel like having too deep squad and some future problems, but injury or two and it's easy to know who to sell. At least positive problem atm 🙂

I guess I could also just do Rudiger and Mbeumo to Gallagher and James, and do the Toney move next week. Toney will probably have gone up £0.3m by then too as well!

    Foster (sanchez)
    Matip taa rudi cancelo (white)
    Raph salah mbeumo town (sisoko)
    antonio jimi (vardy)

    which ?

    A) WC now, if not now will WC gw15
    B) town -4 to galagher/moura

i know WC will enhance the team so much, but i still feel i can squeeze some more pts from the current team, vardy still have good fixtures and i will take out mbuemo matip in the next 2 gws (those my main concerns now)

    A) Jota
    B) Foden

Depends on the rest of the team and subs. Foden is bigger rotation risk when Firmino is out. Jota is sometimes streaky and annoying, but Foden not different.

My thoughts exactly, think I'll go with Jota as less rotation risk at the moment. Team would be:

        Lloris
        Chillwell Cancelo TAA JAmes
        Gallagher Salah Son Jota
        (Foster, Hwang, Livramento, Brownhill)

        If Foden I'd change Lloris

I would probably go without Antonio if on WC. Wolves next, but short nightmare after that. Too much money to be benched and with bad luck his hamstring says hello.

Money tied is an issue, but if people start selling him, his price is going to drop anyway. With his injury record he is very unlikely season keeper. Jesus, Wilson + cheapie might be the way to go. (And yes, Jesus has been as unlucky as Foden for example, but he should be getting something with those fixtures).

Friends, a little help here please:

    Ramsdale, Foster
    TAA, Cancelo, Chilwell, Dias, Livramento
    Salah, Foden, Raphinha, Mbeumo, Luiz
    Vardy, Antonio, Toney

Plan is to use my 2 free transfers and do Vardy-Wilson, Mbeumo-Gallagher. Two questions:

    1. Good transfers?
    2. Do it now or wait until closer to deadline?

The fear is said to be that when Eze is back Gallagher plays deeper and loses (some?) set pieces.

If I had to pick with gun on my head, I would pick ESR (as I actually did long ago). Arsenal have looked good enough after that poor start, so he is more fixture proof imo. And plays for better team. And has looked more dangerous quite often.

            Better team part debatable 🙂

The Arsenal Palace fixture was very much in Palace's favour and they did that without their best two players on the pitch.

They should have been without McArthur for a lot of the game too (post-challenge on Saka). I also don’t think it was very much in their favour - draw seemed fair.

That being said I’d still go Gallagher if picking right now but think there’s very little in it.

After checking stats, it's a coin toss. Gallagher has many games where he has done basically nothing, and then others where his xG has been very high.

As someone who has put this theory forward - full disclosure time - I have brought Gallagher in.

I do think he will lose some appeal but also rate him to continue scoring - just at a lower rate. He will continue to get into the box almost certainly. Where I think he's likely to tail off is in assist rate as I'd assume he'll be further back in something close to the MacArthur role. But MacArthur has two assists to his name already and is relatively advanced (defo not a CDM) so that's not too bleak.

    Sanchez, Steele

    Salah, Son, Raph, Gallagher, Trossard
    Wilson, Antonio, Davis

        Bookies odds to score anytime:
        Wilson 2.5
        Antonio 2.7

That's not enough difference to use only ft. And since Antonio can also pass and Whu is probably more "free scoring team" I am keeping Antonio this week.

It's also easier to move to Ronaldo on gw16 if his form is still wretched
