The Bench Boost chip: Is it more trouble than it’s worth?

Ex-FPL winner Simon March: How to avoid getting carried away with your GW1 picks

Like many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, I’ve racked up some big ol’ bench scores lately and, when I’m not kicking myself for having not played my Bench Boost, I’ve been wondering whether the way I and many others approach the use of this chip needs reviewing.

What I mean is, while Bench Boost is probably everyone’s least favourite chip, we tend to hold on to it as if it is something valuable that shouldn’t be wasted, like mini Bounties in a box of Celebrations. Traditionally Bench Boost sits on the sidelines until there’s a Double Gameweek, but is this actually sensible? Is Bench Boost actually more trouble than it’s worth and are we, in fact, better off just getting it out of the way? Those questions, and more, will be the focus of this article.

How We Fell Out of Love With the Bench Boost Chip

Esteem in the Bench Boost as a chip has slowly eroded ever since it first emerged in the 2015/16 FPL season. There was a time when it was a core part of a serious FPL manager’s strategy and, more specifically, their Double Gameweek strategy. It is undeniable that, going into a Double Gameweek with 15 players – all of whom had two fixtures – was indeed a blast, at least at first.

Then a couple of things happened. Firstly, since Double Gameweeks are notorious for rotation, we started to notice that our boosted bench players were often only playing one fixture (and, perhaps, a cameo) and the fixture they did play frequently wasn’t the best one anyway. Why were we saving this chip only to play it on some mediocre fixtures and, more to the point, why were we allowing this prospect to dictate how we structured our teams or even how and when we used our Wildcards?

Secondly, there was the emergence of the Free Hit chip which allowed unlimited temporary changes for one week and, it turns out, was a much better way of tackling Double Gameweeks as it didn’t necessitate the use of planning, restructuring or using a Wildcard. Bench Boost became a bit of an afterthought as chips go, yet we committed FPL managers still tend to save them for the Double Gameweeks.

A Successful Bench Boost

What even is a successful Bench Boost? Naturally, there is no formal answer but it seems widely accepted that anything over 20 points is a very decent return. Now, 20 points is nothing to be sneezed at; right now it could equate to hundreds of thousands in rank depending on where you currently are in the overall league. Or it could be the difference between winning and losing a mini-league come the end of the season.

But, 20 points? Is that enough for it to have a significant impact on our strategy? That’s really the equivalent of one or two good differential captain choices and, when you consider that an ‘unsuccessful’ Bench Boost might still be, say, eight points, we’re talking about a net difference of maybe 12 points between a successful and an unsuccessful Bench Boost. Nobody would rationally let the pursuit of a 12-point advantage dictate their FPL strategy to the extent that we often let the Bench Boost shape it.

When Should We Use the Bench Boost?

Even if you didn’t build your strategy around it, how you use your Bench Boost is still important. I mean, points are points. Looked at in isolation, there is obvious logic for using it in a Double Gameweek as, by definition, Double Gameweeks give an opportunity (if not necessarily the likelihood) for your player to play twice rather than once. If you can field 15 players instead of 11, then you potentially increase the opportunity for points even further.

But these decisions don’t come in isolation and, because you can’t play two chips in one Gameweek, fielding 15 (or close to) Double Gameweek players may necessitate the use of a Wildcard to plan for it, possibly in the Gameweek before the one you’re focusing on (which is less than ideal) and, simultaneously, using the Bench Boost negates the opportunity to use chips such as the Wildcard, Free Hit or Triple Captain directly in the Double Gameweek which, arguably, might be more effective for that scenario anyway.

So, if you’re not using it in a Double Gameweek, when should you use the Bench Boost chip? Well, knowing when to use your Bench Boost is much like knowing when you’re in love; you look at the fixtures, and you just ‘know’. Sadly, this particular revelation more often than not comes after a Gameweek has finished but, if you get that feeling in advance, I’m of the opinion that you should go for it. If it pays off, brilliant and, if it doesn’t, oh well, at least you don’t have to worry about it anymore, and not having to worry about it anymore can actually be an advantage in itself.

It’s worth pointing out though that, one sure-fire way to undo your Bench Boost is when one of your bench players gets auto-subbed in anyway as, obviously, this effectively shrinks your bench to three rather than four players. So, avoiding periods of heavy rotation such as immediately following an international break or during periods of heavy fixture congestion will make sense for maximising your Bench Boost opportunity.

Being sure that all 15 of your players are fit is obviously important as well and, despite what I said earlier, it is worth pointing out that playing the Bench Boost in a Double Gameweek does of course improve your chances of getting at least one appearance out of each of your 15 players, even if that fixture isn’t the ideal one.

That said, if you find yourself with a real benching headache one Gameweek, you could legitimately play your Bench Boost just to allow you to play that one player who you think could score well but who you can’t justify starting. Many would see this as a ‘waste’ of the chip but, if that player scores a double-figure haul, they’ve more or less justified using it on their own.

However, there is one final argument that suggests that the Bench Boost might be best kept in your back pocket, whether or not you use it in a Double Gameweek and that has to do with team value. Theoretically, if your team value goes up, the quality of your squad should also improve, meaning that your overall 15 should be of a better standard towards the end of the season than it is earlier on. This is a reasonable perspective and, even though it could be the worst time imaginable for rotation threat, I even quite like the idea of a Gameweek 38 bench boost, if only for the lolz.

Conclusion

Personally, I do think that the Bench Boost is ‘more trouble than it’s worth’ or, at least, it is if you allow it to be. The difference between a ‘successful’ and ‘unsuccessful’ Bench Boost is typically so small that it hardly justifies building for it or using a Wildcard and/or a Double Gameweek to maximise it. In fact, doing so could be detrimental, having negative knock-on consequences for your strategic options and performance otherwise.

However, this does not mean that the Bench Boost chip is of no use at all. As discussed, there are ways to maximise your return from it and, at the end of the season, every little will count (literally). What I would say though is don’t be afraid to use it if you feel it is the right time.

Finally, while many dislike the Bench Boost chip it is, in many ways, the best one because it comes with such low expectations. Not many FPL managers will get an extraordinary return from it so its failure won’t define your FPL season, thus you can approach its use with a ‘riskier’ mindset and view any return you do get from it as pure profit.

Was very lucky last season, used BB for what turned out to be my highest bench score all season.
Don't think I could do that again!

That’s incredible luck. I was one of those that did it in a double and then Leeds lost and my keeper got covid. So I think I got 8 points from a dgw bb. Haha.

I used my BB last week - 31pts. I built a very complicated algorithm to help me decide. It's hard to explain and it takes a long time to fully understand, so this is as basic as I can make it:

If bench looks good ----> Use bench boost.

    What do u think guys

    Foster (sanchez)
    Matip taa rudi cancelo (white)
    Raph salah mbeumo town (sisoko)
    antonio jimi (vardy)

    which ?

    A) WC now, if not now will WC gw15
    B) town -4 to galagher/moura

i know WC will enhance the team so much, but i still feel i can squeeze some more pts, i will take out mbuemo matip in the next 2 gws

I think this first portion of the year the fact that non-Salah premiums are struggling has led to more spreading of budget and then stronger benched. Also partly because of the need to cover defensive and midfield rotation.
I do wonder if the season progresses and we shift back to 2/3 premium teams that I imagine benches get weaker and there will be fewer opportunistic times to play the bb. Also having Foster starting as a 4.0 has been a huge benefit.

I guess what I’m thinking is maybe you do it early as soon as you can, or you have to plan it out later. All of which is making me think asap is best.

Team values will go up though. You'll be able to have a stronger XI and still have a good bench.

It's just really hard to make myself do it in a SGW when we still have assets subject to roulette. At least in a DGW if they miss one game, they can still play the other.

True on value. But that’s offset by the players you want being more expensive often too.

I think it’ll be hard to convince myself to go this week still. Maybe I’ll try keeping a strong bench until Christmas and see if a good opportunity arises.

So my best ever BB resulted in my highest ever score (134 I think) which was when we had ‘project restart’ and we all got given a bonus wild-card which was active and also allowed you to use a chip the same week. From memory I loaded up with Sheffield United defenders who got two clean sheets each and was highly satisfying. If they gave us the power to wild card and BB the same week it would remove these concerns around planning for it BUT I like how frustrating a chip it can be and how rewarding it can be to people who are brave (like it has been for our current number 2 I’m the world).

This year will still waste it in a DGM though.

Oh very nice! Was also just nice that football was back on the menu!

Last season around Jan - March My bench was consistently getting 20+ points but was never bold enough to play the chip outside a DGW. Which then failed.

That was a fun week to BB, but SHU didn't keep two clean sheets. Egan got sent off in the second game and they lost 3-0 to Newcastle. Then they proceeded to troll me for the rest of the season, keeping a CS when I benched them and conceding when I started them.

Got -1 from my bench boost last season which included a Dawson red card, a randomly benched Forster after he'd played a run of games and 2 no shows (Azpi and probably some Chelsea or City player).

Then due to high team value I spent the rest of the season having to bench one of Ihenacho, Mount, Lingard or Jota and contrived to make the wrong decision every single week.

Played it GW1 this year and got a bang average 15 points, but at least I get to have a bench of Steele, Duffy, Sissoko and Davis for the rest of the season.

Those of you bringing in Kane, Son or maybe both for GW 12, are you captaining one of them?

Otherwise, I don't see the point in investing on spurs assets that have done next to nothing; especially Kane.

No, but I don't see the issue with not captaining them. They don't have form so you're banking on the good fixture run as well as new manager bounce to be the driving factor and go pay off. Both players have high ceilings when in form and are capable of big hauls regularly if they manage to pick it up. The key word of course is "if", and it's a big if, but not many strikers performing at the minute so the money can be used to take that chance

The whole 'will you captain them' thing is out the window. No-one's captaining anyone other than Salah. You've got to spend the money somewhere. There's new rules now.

Playing it in a DGW still makes the most sense IMO.

But not if you're taking hits and forsaking long-term gains to do it.

Playing it in a SGW gives you less scorers.

But sometimes - with lack of premiums meaning money is spread more evenly, and favourable fixtures - it can be the right move.

I think like all FPL advice, some people take it as a fixed convention, when really it's a guide and you should use judgment/flexibility.

Yeah I kinda like that it’s hard and not clear how to play it. Surely any serious player wants more of these opportunities to get an edge on “the casuals”?

I think triple captain is worse. Regular double captain is already high variance when looked at on a one week basis*. Look at Havertz v Norwich - a great decision to captain him, if you follow that thought process week after week, but a fail in isolation of the outcome that GW.

Tripling it as a one-off is just increasing luck/variance

*disregard recent Salah form for this statement, it is an atypical run.

So with this team I am looking at Raph/Dias --> Gallagher/Cancelo

    would you:
    a) make the moves now leaving 0.6 itb
    b) wait until internationals are done, likely to cost upwards of 0.2 more
    c) roll ft and look to do this move in gw13 which could cost me even more in terms of price changes

Gut feel is option C but good to hear other views - cheers
Fwiw, Palace are away to Burnley next

    Guiata
    Trent Dias Chilwell Livra

I wouldn't do it at all. Cancelo's a much better option than Dias, no doubt. But at the expense of losing Raph for Gallagher? That's way too much of a downgrade to justify it imo

Cool. Might thinking is that Raph is doing well but not exceeding 9 points at best, which Gallagher could match especially given longer term fixtures.
Any other way to get Cancelo?
Currently 0.2m short of doing Dias to Cancelo

What do you have planned for Armstrong? I think I'd be thinking along the lines of a tactic restructure - maybe losing Armstrong for fodder to upgrade Gilmour and in the process upgrading Dias to Cancelo.

That being said as good as Cancelo is I don't think you need to rip your team up for him. Raph's not exceeding 9 pts but considering his price I think that's pretty good and he's only going to get better (IMO) when other Leeds players return. This is one of the best players in the league available at sub-7m.

Upgrading Gilmour, downgrading Armstrong was my exact thinking but not a lot of downgrade options however that could change soon
Not enough funds for Gilmour to Gallagher, keeping Raph unless I go non playing 3rd striker but I never love that option.

    Team B

    Guaita – Foster
    TAA – Cancelo – James – Livra – White

defence especially is very template. depends what your appetite is like for using wc to have what everyone else has/wants or have some differentials. Agree that full backs are the way to go (so it seems).
      Bilva is decent differential.
If you're happy with Jota then go for it.

Jumping in on the Conte train this week. Just unsure whether I make the move for Kane or Son this week so would like to hear some opinions

    2 options atm include

    1) Easy swap from Vardy to Kane

    2) Raph + Vardy to Son + Jesus/Wilson

I still feel much more confident in captaining Kane. Whether that be the price tag, being on pens or this feeling that he is still their main man. And with the fixture run that they have I would like to take a punt and captian a Spurs assest in at least 2 of the 4 fixtures if not more.

    1. Gabbiadini
      • 6 Years
      2 years, 4 months ago

is Vardy to Kane really an "easy" swap?
nothing to me so far has suggested that this is a good move.

      1. Pops15
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

"Easy" in terms of it being one move with no hit and keeps the premium striker spot available for a switch to CR7 in gw16.

Vardy has a total of 4 points over the last 3 game weeks since everyone brought him in. Leicester have been poor and Vardy has been non existent. So dont feel too bad losing him but I'm ready for him to completely destroy me with a scoring run after Chelsea as he always does when his ownership drops

        1. Gabbiadini
          • 6 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

Yes, I agree entirely with that final point and is a reason as to why I am holding.

    2. Eze Really?
      • 9 Years

No 2 seems reasonable but think about it.
Raph and Vardy are likely to get similar points to Son and Wilson.

      1. Pops15
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

I think Son has the potential to really outscore Raph over the next 4. Leeds have not been very potent this season.

And when I look at Wilson vs Vardy I see goals for Wilson over the next 4. Could easily match

I never like to bench boost outside a double. I know the doubles are always very overhyped and the BB rarely comes off but I still feel likes it's worth holding. This year we have plenty of cheap options that are guaranteed minutes so it might work out well

From the article above, it seems a clear from it's author that the BB should be played when you instinctively feel that those on the bench could also score well. It does not have to be a dgw.

Apart from McArthur, they all seem a good shout to do well so a yes from me.

From the eye test last gameweek, the one that really stood out was Reece James. I plan to play 442 and dangerously, avoid TOT's players.

How would you get James in? Team:

    Sanchez/Steele

    TAA, Cancello, Chilwell, White, Livra.

    Salah, Benny, Jota, Raphinha, Allan

    Jiminez, Antonio, Vardy.

    0.6 in bank. 2FTs. Ta.
