Solskjaer departs as United look to appoint interim manager

Manchester United finally confirmed on Sunday that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as manager of the club.

The Norwegian had been under pressure for some time, after a succession of poor performances and results, and Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Watford proved to be the final straw.

The Red Devils have announced that Michael Carrick will now take charge of the team “for forthcoming games” and that they will then look to appoint an interim manager to the end of the season.

“Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision. While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.

“Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as Manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a Manager who gave us many great moments. He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family.” – Manchester United club statement

From a cynical perspective, the news may be well received in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) circles given how utterly toothless the performances have been going forward and how shabby United have looked at the back.

Most of their players have been off the menu for some time in FPL as a consequence but there will be hope that the appointment of a new head coach, even a short-term one, can reinvigorate the likes of Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m), Luke Shaw (£5.2m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m) and increase their appeal to us Fantasy managers – particularly with an appealing fixture swing coming up in Gameweek 15/16:

BOOKIES’ FAVOURITES FOR THE UNITED JOB

  • Zidane: 21/10
  • Carrick: 100/30
  • Rodgers: 9/2
  • Ten Hag: 10/1
  • Rangnick: 14/1
  • Fletcher: 16/1
  • Blanc/Pochettino: 20/1

Can I wait on Chilwell / James another week? I can do it this week but means another hit, although this week's hit has done me well so far (Semedo, Raphinha, Vardy to TAA, Cornet and Kane for -4). I'd have to lose Antonio or Toney in return (Toney I'm fine to do that with, it was the plan but means I'll have to go with someone I don't really want like Hwang)

I'm in a similar boat as you. Not having one of the two is killing me. But to get one in I need to take another hit. If Jota is injured, that makes my decision easier.

Yeah that seems fair, I was nearly thinking of selling Rudiger for one as it means no hit but looking at the fixtures (and the value I have built up in him) I think I'd be mad to do that

James or Chilwell could be worth the hit vs United the way they're performing

That's what I'm thinking. I had both earlier in the season and it was a disaster (Chilwell still didn't start, James was rotated then injured). I do still think they've been dependent on Mendy a lot to save clean sheets but at this stage and looking at the fixtures I'm just letting points pass me by

Bottomed sorry. Could hold this week but some early thoughts…

    1) Raphinha to Jota
    2) Rudiger to James

Rudiger was great this weekend but, now he’s nailed, James (who I used to own) looks so dangerous and involved

    1FT 1.3ITB
    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Chilwell
    Salah Foden Raphinha Gray ESR
    Kane Toney

    Steele Rudiger Livramento Street

As an owner, I hope I'm wrong.

      Talk Sport speculation.

Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly pushing for Man United to appoint current Spain boss Luis Enrique.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer shown the door at Old Trafford, United have now begun their search for a new manager.

Brendan Rodgers, Zinedine Zidane and Erik ten Hag are among the leading names to become the new Red Devils chief.

But Sky Sports claim Ronaldo wants former Barcelona manager Enrique to take charge.

It is said United are expected to consider Enrique as a possible replacement for Solksjaer and Ronaldo believes the Spaniard is the right calibre of coach to help the club push for silverware again.

Man Utd would do well to not listen to Ronaldo. Is it coincidence that Man Utd have got worse since they tried to fit Ronaldo into the team?

And if it wasn't for Ronaldo, Man United would be out of the Champions League already... They were playing poorly before he arrived, Southampton and Wolves games at the start of the season they arguably could have lost both but got 4 points.

Would they? Difficult to say whether it is Ronaldo's presence in the team that has disrupted the teamwork or something else.

I still think Ronaldo is revelling in the 'saviour' role (particularly in CL games) to the detriment of Man Utd as a whole. The sum of the parts is less than the whole when Ronaldo plays for Man Utd IMO.

It just became stale with Ole there most likely. Everyone who's not a United fan wanted him to get the job, even when they beat PSG nearly 3 years ago. They weren't playing extremely well last season, got lucky in a lot of games / individual brilliance. They were also lucky that Arsenal/Spurs had poor seasons, Liverpool had many first team players out and Chelsea sacked their manager halfway through the season, so they had a comfortable run at 2nd, while not playing that well at all.

It's already common knowledge that the board is the problem, but here's a quick retelling of how bad it gets:

They just sacked someone who was appointed as an interim manager, then given the permanent job after a honeymoon phase, then stayed even after the first of many big red flags

Now that they've finally sacked him years later, they've appointed an caretaker manager to be in place until they can get an interim manager to limp over half the season with

      No. Plan. Whatsoever
