Five goals in six starts for Cornet as set-piece problems continue at Palace

We continue our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Gameweek 12 Scout Notes with analysis of Burnley v Crystal Palace.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s action, click here, while you can read up on all of the weekend’s games in more detail via the links below.

BURNLEY 3-3 CRYSTAL PALACE

  • Goals: Ben Mee (£4.9m), Chris Wood (£6.7m), Maxwel Cornet (£6.1m) | Christian Benteke (£6.3m) x2, Marc Guehi (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Ashley Westwood (£5.3m), James Tarkowski (£4.9m) x2 | Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) x2, Conor Gallagher (£6.0m)
  • Bonus: Benteke x3, Andersen x2, Tarkowski x2

CORNET AND WOOD PARTNERSHIP THRIVING

After Saturday’s result at Turf Moor, Burnley have now avoided defeat in their past four games, a run which has included a 3-1 win over Brentford and draw at Chelsea.

Key to that improved form has been the partnership between Maxwel Cornet (£6.1m) and Chris Wood (£6.7m), with both players on the scoresheet again in Gameweek 12, as they were in their previous home fixture. As a result, the Ivorian has now scored five goals in just six starts, though it is worth noting that his +3.96 expected goals (xG) delta is higher than any other player in the division, while he has recorded that goalscoring tally from just 10 shots.

“We enjoy what he is doing, he is getting towards true Premier League fitness I think and he has played football during the international break and he looked alive, especially second half. In the first half he was sitting on the deep laying midfielder and he didn’t need to. We told him to come off that position and go and press which he did in the second half and he has brought energy but he brought quality as well and his finish was a fine strike.” – Sean Dyche on Maxwel Cornet

With Cornet and Wood paired together up front, the Clarets have now scored seven goals in their last three games, which bodes well for their attacking prospects ahead of a reasonably appealing run of fixtures:

Elsewhere, James Tarkowski (£4.9m) and Ashley Westwood (£5.3m) will both miss Burnley’s match against Tottenham Hotspur next week after picking up their fifth bookings of the season.

BENTEKE AT THE DOUBLE

A brace from Christian Benteke (£6.3m) means that he has now scored 11 Premier League goals in 2021, with all four of this season’s arriving in the last five Gameweeks. During that time, he has been benched once, though with Patrick Vieira praising his work rate off the ball, his chances of another start against Aston Villa on Saturday look promising.

“The way we are playing now, we are creating more chances. For me as a striker, it is a pleasure to be up front. The most important thing is to get points. We took one [at Burnley], and hopefully we will get three next weekend.

As the manager said, we are following a process. The last game we lost was against Liverpool, and since then we have been consistent. We can still do better, we just have to take it game by game.

As you can see, it’s going fantastically for the club in a short space of time. The way we are playing is nice to watch. We are creating more chances, and that is good for the team and the club.” – Christian Benteke

SET-PIECE ISSUES AT PALACE

Palace are now unbeaten in seven games, while only Liverpool and Chelsea have lost fewer matches this season, but there are issues at the back which Vieira will look to solve sooner rather than later.

Despite consecutive clean sheets against Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers prior to Gameweek 12, they conceded three at Burnley, with the absence of key midfielder James McArthur (£4.5m) a real blow, though we should point out that two goals came from set-pieces, which has been a problem area all season.

In fact, no team has conceded more goals from set-pieces in 2021/22, or more attempts than their 60, with Sean Dyche targeting that specific weakness at the weekend:

“We know so far they’ve got a poor record, well so far, from set pieces, so we thought we could capitalise as we know we’re strong from that. I think the quality of the ball in, Ben Mee’s header is fantastic, Maxwel’s is a brilliant strike, and Woody nicks one as well, so we’re pleased with that. We looked effective from it all game, there were chances in the second half, and obviously a brilliant finish from Maxwel, so pleased with that side of things.” – Sean Dyche

Elsewhere, Conor Gallagher (£6.0m) put in a lively display, consistently finding space between the lines, and provided his fifth assist of the season, while Cheikh Kouyate (£4.5m) filled in for the injured McArthur, with Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) alongside him in midfield.

Burnley XI: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, Gudmundsson, Westwood, Brownhill, McNeil, Cornet (Vydra 84), Wood (Rodriguez 79)

C Palace XI: Guaita, Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell, Milivojevic (Edouard 87), Kouyate, Gallagher (Schlupp 81), Ayew (Olise 58), Zaha, Benteke

Yea strikers aren't doing it. Big defenders and plenty of cheap mid options doing the biz. Important to get the big mid priced scorers with Salah perma cap

Could easily get five Liverpool players whilst Tsimikas playing

If you can do it I absolutely would, I brought in Kane and will stick out the good fixtures and then decide on a move to Ronaldo or not but if I didn't then I'd love to do this. That being said it might make things a bit annoying in late December when you'll likely need to transfer both him and Salah out

I debated this last night. But I think I've scrapped the plan while Jota is an option.

TAA and Salah are non-negotiable in this form which means there's only one Liverpool slot left. Jota is much better value than Mane. Add on the prospect of AFCON and I don't think it makes sense to get Mane.

The debate is whether you want the premium mid or fwd slot. Im just gonna sit on it for a week and figure out what i want to do.

Mane could easily score 50 over the next 6... and then roll into a Fernandes/KdB. Its kinda tempting. AFCON is only 2 fixtures i think.

AFCON players are likely to be requested to leave on boxing day, so after that day's PL game, if their country goes to the final they may miss 4-5 weeks, worth keeping in mind

The AFCON issue swings it for me, it's too much of a headache to cover both Salah and Mane for the three gameweek period that they'll be unavailable for.

Mane is a great option for sure, but I think Jota is the better option for a third Liverpool spot at the moment.

Glas this article came out, considering buying the lad but those stats loo a bit like Benny/Gray earlier on in the season

    Comes down to...

    A. Chilwell + Foden + Dennis

    or

    B. Chilwell + Cornet + Antonio

....Option A gives me 1.4 itb, which could be used to get Jota in for Raphina later on...

He reminds me more of ASM than Benrahma or Gray personally, he's a very talented player in a pretty poor team that's conceding a lot but scoring a lot too because of that.

Just watching MOTD2, guessing anyone selling Foden didn't see much of the game yesterday. He was out wide for most of the game yet practically all of City's chances while he was on the pitch came through him (even on both goals the ball fell to Cancelo/Rodri after play from Foden) and City's mids seemed to actively look for him out wide. He should have had an assist but Sterling missed a sitter, and would have had a sitter himself from a Sterling cross had he been able to hit it to Foden instead of yards behind him.

I know Sterling scored but he's just so wasteful, missed that chance, missed an even easier chance towards the end where he had an age to set himself to shoot and I think he actually mis-hit his shot for the goal.

Yep, I'm weary of selling him atm, doesn't sit well. Seems like Antonio > Dennis might be better, chances are the player I pick will be subbed most weeks anyways in a 541

Yeah he was good I thought.

Sterling’s strength is his dribbling more than his finishing I think, but he’s still a good scorer - his goal was a great finisher.

Did he look nearly as good as Jota? Nah. I'll give him another week but he's been disappointing. Also, question his minutes during the festive period with KDB and Grealish back.

He'll move into the centre when Grealish is back, and he's played beside KDB when he's fit as well.
        I would hold.

Jota always looks good, but he played 20 mins more than Foden and in the end his only return in the last 3 games was because of a poor backpass

      A looks good..
You need a Chelsea wingback and there's much better options than Saka at the moment for same or less price (Gallagher/Cornet), but to afford James/Chilly, you probably would need to lose Antonio or Ronaldo.

They should be but Leeds have a horrendous run after the next few, and Wilson is one booking away from a suspension. Reguilon looks like a good option going forward but Spurs still looking far from solid defensively.

I don't think Leeds have great fixtures at all and Newcastle are still a bit crap so I would steer clear.

It's Spurs, Liverpool, Leicester that are the teams with good fixtures and with high potential assets.

    Thoughts on foden to jota?

Jota playing more centrally. Foden to be rotated more than jota during December perhaps?

    Thanks

Am keeping foden. I want city attack coverage and he is the best option by miles.

All depends on his knee and a Firmino update. I'm done with City attackers.

Gah. Am tempted by Jota again but has burned me time and again. No consistency and injury prone.

Does Antonio & Mbuemo > King & Gallagher for free make sense this week, if it will allow me to upgrade Duffy > James next week?

    Ramsdale Foster
    TAA Cancelo Chilly Livra Duffy*
    Salah Foden Raph Mbuemo* B’hill
    Vardy Antonio* Jimi

Could be rotation in the midweek GW14. Don't like Antonio to King even if it's to free funds. Mbeumo to Gallagher is grand. Can you do that and roll the other transfer.

I wish, unfortunately Foden or Antonio need to go to free up the funds

Have used my 2FT early for once. With a rank of 475k, do I need to bring in some differentials to make up ground in the coming weeks.
What would you recommend as the priorities for this lot?
Fixtures wise Raph to Gallagher/Cornet but not for a hit unless Raph doesn't recover. Anything else?

    Guiata (Steer)
    Trent Cancelo Chilwell White (Livra)
    Salah Foden ESR Raph (Gilmour)
    Kane Antonio (Dennis)

Thinking a one week punt from Antonio to Aubameyang for home game v Newcastle then move to Wilson for Norwich and Burnley in weeks 14 and 15 before wildcarding in 16. What are thoughts on this ?

In theory it sounds good but always risky booking in transfers like that as something else is bound to happen in your team. Id imagine you may want Antonio back again in a few weeks too and if you have value tied up makes the decision a little trickier.

I think I need a sense check from all of you clever FPL folk. I'm very tempted to take a hit this week (option A), but It's possible that I'm just stubborn and can't admit that Grealish has been a poor choice. What do you reckon?

    Ramsdale | Foster
    James | TAA | Chilwell | Cancelo | Reguilon
    Salah | Grealish** | Saka* | Raphinha | Mbeumo
    Vardy | Antonio* | Scarlett

    a) Saka + Antonio >> Jota + Benteke (or King / Toney) playing a 5-3-2 with Raph and Mbeumo benched
    b) Grealish >> Jota playing a 5-4-1 with Mbeumo and Antonio benched

Grealish > Jota is the easiest move I've ever seen. Fixture is good too for Liverpool this week.

    Around GW14:

    A)
    Ramsdale
    Trent Chilwell James Mitchell/Dier
    Salah Raph Cornet ESR
    Kane Ronaldo

    Steele Livra Sissoko Scarlett

    B)
    Ramsdale
    Trent Chilwell James Rudiger Cancelo
    Salah Raph Cornet
    Antonio Ronaldo

    Bench:
    Steele ESR Dennis Sissoko

Which combo would you rather have?

    A) Raphinha + Toney
    B) Antonio + King

My transfers are gonna involve getting Jota and I'm basically deciding which of the above two options are best. The last slot is gonna be rotated in and out. King for instance would be benched for most of the tough fixtures.

Raph over Antonio in the short term but to avoid future transfers I'd prefer B. Long term West Ham/Watford have the better fixtures and if one of the fullbacks is starting ahead of King then he's a good sub

The thing is, I have Raphinha > Bowen open as well for a West Ham asset when their fixtures get good.

It comes down to a forward vs a mid slot. Will Antonio's price point (8.0m FWD) do better than the Raphinha slot (6-7m MID)

too many mids scoring well so lots of options- Bowen Raph ESR Gallagher Cornet

DCL and Bamford long layoffs. Wilson and Jimmy (fixtures good next 2-3) but after that Antonio seems the standout again. Only concern there is xmas rotation

absolute dream midfield for me is

      Salah Premium Foden Jota Mount

where Premium = Mane/Bruno/KdB, obv if Mane then Jota is Gundo/Bilva. However thats not really realistic at this stage, but I think the Gallagher --> Bowen --> Gundo train is a realistic method of getting there.

      Think Antonio outscores Raph

I am keeping both & sacrificing Foden as Pep roulette is will scupper any best laid plans for sure
