Pro Pundits - Tom

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman’s Gameweek 13 plans

Gameweek 12 has drawn to a close, and all in all, it was a pretty good one for me.

A total of 75 points has seen my overall rank rise to 57,377, and though it’s early days, it’s been a positive start.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) led the way with 16 captain points but there were also returns for Ben Foster (£4.1m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m), Antonio Rudiger (£5.9m), Joao Cancelo (£6.6m) and Adam Armstrong (£6.0m), who has started to pick up some form in recent weeks.

Now, as focus shifts to Gameweek 13, I thought I’d write-up some observations from Steven Gerrard’s first match in charge of Aston Villa, plus my own transfer/team plans for the weekend.

VILLA UNDER GERRARD – FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Steven Gerrard got off to a winning start at Aston Villa on Saturday, with a 2-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion. Lining up in a 4-3-3 formation, Gerrard’s preferred shape during his time at Rangers, Villa were much improved, especially at the back. As a result, they limited Graham Potter’s side to just 0.52 expected goals (xG) – their second lowest xG total of the season so far – with 0.28 of that figure arriving from one Tariq Lamptey (£4.4m) attempt during the first-half.

While Albion had a lot of the ball with 63% possession, they rarely looked like scoring, something Gerrard touched on after the game:

“Brighton had a lot of possession, but it was in the areas we wanted them to have the ball, so I’m really pleased for the players, proud of them, but it’s only a start, we need to go and back it up now.”

Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) and Tyrone Mings (£4.9m) got the goals on the day, but which players could benefit most from Gerrard’s appointment in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

    Yay or Nay?

    Ronaldo -> Kane (-4)

Surely Kane could easily outscore ronaldo who plays Chelsea away by 4 points?

Need to save a FT this week to allow myself to get there if so.

Have gone with Vardy for a while in order to be able to go both ways. Hasn’t worked a treat. Leaning towards no premium fwd now, but will give it another week to decide.

I think no premium forward is the way to go.

More value in premium defenders and mid price midfielders at the moment

Guys i have 1.5 ITB and i want to sell Duffy to double up City defence (have Cancelo), and call me crazy but im thinking about Kyle Walker.
-City have great long term fixtures
-Mendy is suspended so 3 players are competing for 2 spots(and it seems that Zinchenko will start 1 of 5 games)
-I thought about Ederson also but Walker is 0.5 cheaper and will get some assists eventually or more likely some bonus points

    Am i wrong?

If Ben Chilwell is out for a while can get this team but for -8
Havertz to Gallagher ( already done)
    Mbeumo to Jota
    Chilwell to Alonso

Given Chilwell and Havertz possibly not starters and Mbeumo’ s liking for hitting the post Is it worth it? Not keen on starting Antonio or Livramento this week

      Mbeumo to Jota yes.
Chilwell out for another hit? Nah. I'd wait to do it for free, especially with United this week and Kante out. Unless you're going to lose value in Chilwell. Antonio got a return last time at the Etihad.

Mbeumo and Gallagher is hardly lateral anymore, one has twice the points in harder fixtures

        1. gart888
          • 9 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

Mbeumo has hit 7 posts. He could easily have the points Gallagher does if things went a little differently.

I guess I'm just sour on how bad Gallagher's underlying stats were GW4-GW8.

He could have just as easily missed the outside of the post each time. May as well start counting all offside goals as goals too...

              • 9 Years
              2 years, 4 months ago

I mean, you absolutely should be considering offside goals when looking at players. They indicate that the player is getting into more positions to score points than their stats (or underlying states) let on.

Its a tricky scenario I feel.
My double Chelsea defense offers a handy differential. Without it, most of my players are template.
I also don't have Kane or Jota who are due an explosive return at some point.
Just trying not to panic and do anything silly.

I have Son and wish I didn't. I don't have Jota also. The injury sounds bad so looks like I will move Chilly to Dias maybe; the move everyone was doing the other way round until last night. Rudiger also an option and an outsider is Alonso .

Antonio has 2 goals in last 9 gws and face 4 tough defenses in mci che ars bha in 4 of next 5 gws.

Could there be a case to go without him until gw18 when westham fixtures turns?

always a case for it. are you looking at different structure or straight swap for someone else then switch back

      What's the alternative? Jimenez?

Always a case. But gw16 (bur) is already a good fixture for him so I see no problem holding him with a good back up (minutes management by Moyes is also an issue)

There possibly could be a case to go without Antonio.

Problem is that there are so few viable alternatives up front and transfers are better served trying to get 4 premium defenders and the right mid price midfielders in the team before replacing Antonio

Kane/Ronaldo Toney King upfront is viable with a power mid

I have him too. Will keep as there are no real alternatives. Maybe Jimi, but we shall see.

I don't think Arsenal or BHA will keep West Ham out.

You go with fixtures for defenders and form for strikers. I've got both Vardy and Antonio, and both look off their game right now.

Chilwell & Brownhill to Reguilon & Jota worth -4? (2.4 itb)

    Guaita Foster
    TAA Cancelo Livra James Chilwell*
    Salah Son Foden ESR Brownhill
    Antonio Toney Hwang

I'd wait til the pressers regarding injuries to Chilwell and Jota before committing to a -4

Yeah will wait for pressers but do you think it's going to worth -4 for my team?

If Chilwell is out for 2+ weeks then the -4 is more justifiable. If its just a knock and he's back next game (or at worst he misses just 1 game) then it's not worth the hit imo

      Why -4?

Can't you just do Chilwell -> Reguilon only and plays 442?

        Because of Jota maybe?

Yeah that's sensible if Chilwell is out for some time. Cheers man

What would be your move(s) here this week?
Was going to do Benrahma-> Jota and then a -4 to fund that with Anto -> Dennis/King/Benteke.
Is Chilwell -> James or even Alonso a more important move though if he out for a few weeks?

    Sanchez.
    TAA, Chilwell, Cancelo, Rudiger.
    Salah, Raphinha, Gallagher.
    Vardy, Jimenez, Antonio.
    Bachmann, Bissouma, Benrahma, Livramento.

Both viable options. But maybe it's a blessing in disguise for you to finally land James

Azpi played there vs United 5 years ago. Azpi played there in the 2nd half last night.

      Incorrect Torres Magic.

Alonso will be nailed if Chilwell is confirmed out.

TT interview post match confirmed Azpi was scheduled to come on for James. Chilwell got injured & he decided to play Azpi on the left. He wanted him in the pitch for experience seeing out the game.

How Torres Magic thinks Azpi is going to play LWB because Mourinho played him at LB in a 4 in 2015, when Tuchel is our manager & before tonight has never started him at LWB is beyond me.

Ignore him Karan, any / every Chelsea fan will tell you he's wrong.
