FPL festive fixture schedule: When might Premier League sides rotate the most?

The first of nine Gameweeks in the space of 36 days takes place this weekend and we’re readying ourselves for the festive fixture frenzy ahead of Saturday’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline.

Visits from the extended family, a Mrs Brown’s Boys special, bin collection day mayhem: there’s lots to dread about the Christmas period and top of the naughty list for FPL managers is rotation.

This is traditionally the period when starting XI changes ramp up a gear, with the matches coming thick and fast not just in the Premier League but also in cup competitions at home and abroad.

We’ll be looking at which players stand the best chance of avoiding a benching or two in a separate piece but it’s the fixture calendar itself that we’re focusing on here.

We’ll assess the clubs with the tightest and most generous turnarounds in this article, using moderator Legomane’s rather excellent ‘Fixture Crush’ matrix.

Our thanks go to him for allowing us to use this graphic as the focal point of this feature.

FPL FIXTURE OVERVIEW

(click the above image to expand)

CLUBS WITH THE MOST MATCHES FROM GAMEWEEKS 13-21

Chelsea, Leicester City, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United12 (nine league matches, two European ties, one EFL Cup quarter-final)
Manchester City, Manchester United11 (nine league matches, two European ties)
Arsenal, Brentford10 (nine league matches, one EFL Cup quarter-final)
Aston Villa, Brighton and Hove Albion, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Everton, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Norwich City, Southampton, Watford, Wolverhampton Wanderers9 (all league matches)

CLUBS WITH THE TIGHTEST TURNAROUNDS

In this table, we look at the clubs who have the highest number of ‘tight’ turnarounds from the Wednesday before Gameweek 13 onwards. For this, we’re taking tight to mean two recovery days or fewer (eg Saturday-Tuesday, Thursday-Sunday etc).

West Ham United7
Chelsea, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur6
Burnley, Manchester United5
Brigthon and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Watford4
Arsenal, Everton, Leeds United, Norwich City, Southampton3
Aston Villa, Brentford, Wolverhampton Wanderers2

It’s no surprise to see the clubs involved in European competition up there at the top, with West Ham United leading the way – a bit of a concern for owners of Michail Antonio (£8.2m), perhaps, although David Moyes can at least afford the luxury of resting him in the Europa League with qualification to the knockout rounds assured.

Manchester United’s non-involvement in the EFL Cup means that they have a full seven days of rest in between Gameweeks 18 and 19, which represents the longest recovery time given to any top-flight team throughout the period studied.

Tottenham Hotspur, by contrast, don’t have more than three days of rest, playing Thursday-Sunday for the next month and then having an EFL Cup clash with West Ham ahead of a three-game week between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Aston Villa, Brentford and Wolves have been dealt the best hands if we follow the table above, with the Bees even afforded an extra day of rest between Gameweeks 19 and 20 (more of which below).

Arsenal deserve a mention, too: they might be in EFL Cup quarter-final action in between Gameweeks 18 and 19 but they have been gifted a home draw against League One side Sunderland, so there’ll surely be a few breathers handed out to some key personnel in that tie.

TIGHTEST TURNAROUNDS FROM GAMEWEEKS 19 TO 20

The tightest of all the tight turnarounds comes between Gameweeks 19 and 20, with FPL managers faced with two deadlines in the space of 48 hours.

The clubs’ recovery time in between these two Gameweeks are detailed below (hours are given between full-time and kick-off, rounded up to the nearest half-hour):

TeamHours between GW19-20
Arsenal43.5
Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Norwich City, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers46
Watford48.5
Leeds United, Leicester City51
Liverpool53.5
Brighton and Hove Albion, Newcastle United69.5
Brentford, Manchester United70.5
Chelsea72
Manchester City75.5
Everton98.5
Burnley99.5

Arsenal are the worst hit: they are in action at the traditional 3pm kick-off time on Boxing Day and then have a lunchtime match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 28.

Seven clubs’ fixtures kick off at the same time, two days apart, in Gameweeks 19 and 20, affording them less than 48 hours of recovery.

Burnley and Everton are on easy street by comparison, with matches on Boxing Day and December 30.

Chelsea and the two Manchester clubs also get off relatively lightly, with around three days of recuperation time in between their respective games.

CLUBS WITH SUCCESSIVE ‘RED ZONE’ TURNAROUNDS – AND WHEN THEY FALL

The below table looks at when Premier League clubs have successive ‘red zone’ turnarounds – that is, when there are only two recovery days between matches.

The game ranges in italics indicate that one of the three consecutive fixtures is a cup tie, so rotation could theoretically be more widespread outside of the league matches involved.

For example, Liverpool have three fixtures between December 1-7 – but the last one of those is a Champions League against Milan, so with qualification for the knockout rounds assured, Klopp may look to rest some key players in Italy.

Manchester United have also secured top spot in their Champions League group, so the home fixture against Young Boys in between Gameweeks 15-16 allows whoever is in charge to run wild with the starting XI alterations and focus on the four Premier League matches around it.

TeamSuccessive ‘red zone’ Gameweek turnarounds
Manchester CityGW13-15 (plus UCL after GW15)
GW19-21
Manchester UnitedGW14-17 (UCL in between GW15-16)
LiverpoolGW14-15 (plus UCL after GW15)
GW17-18 (plus EFL Cup after GW18)
ChelseaGW13-15
GW17-18 (plus EFL Cup after GW18)
Leicester CityGW13-14 (plus UEL before GW13)
GW17-18 (plus EFL Cup after GW18)
West Ham UnitedGW13-15 (plus UEL before GW13)
GW16-18 (plus UEL before GW16)
Tottenham HotspurGW17-18 (plus EFL Cup after GW18)
ArsenalGW17-18 (plus EFL Cup after GW18)
Newcastle UnitedGW19-21
Crystal PalaceGW16-18
Brighton and Hove AlbonGW16-18
BurnleyGW13-15, GW16-18
WatfordGW13-15

Manchester City, Chelsea and West Ham are three of five clubs who play Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday in Gameweeks 13-15, which may set alarm bells ringing for FPL managers who own players from any of those teams. Burnley and Watford are the other two sides with the same schedule.

The Hammers have exactly the same timetable in Gameweeks 16-18, along with Crystal Palace, Brighton and Burnley.

The spectre of Pep rotation then rears its head again from Gameweeks 19-21, when the Citizens once more have to negotiate league fixtures on the Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday. Newcastle United are also on a tight turnaround from December 27 to January 2 inclusive.

Ready those FPL benches…

    Does anybody know..

I've seen youtubers use a FPL related site that graphically looks like the official FPL site, to plan transfers and view what the team looks like.

    Does anyone know the url?

Which of these moves looks nice to start gaining some ranks? Leaning towards C with more differential players

    A) Chilwell + Omo + Havertz --> Cancelo + James + ESR (-4)
    B) Chilwell + Havertz --> Cancelo/James + Jota/Bernardo
    C) Chilwell + White + Havertz --> Cancelo + Alonso + Bernardo Silva (-4)

    Fernandez | 4.0m

    Vardy | Antonio | Dennis

Identified its time for Havertz to go.

Who do you think is the best option below 9.1m? I am stuck here. ESR? Foden? Bernardo? Jota?

Thanks! That sounds like a good move.

Do you think Jota will be playing much during the busy schedule? In that case, Bernardo Silva has slightly better stats than Jota over the past six gameweeks. ESR / I don't know, he is scoring the points and pass the eye test, but not the stats to back it up. Now, Sterling has also started scoring and it could be a good opportunity to get him in before others. Not very keen on Son / Kane; they have yet to gel under Conte.

        1. Steiger
          • 5 Years

He never plays the full 90 so he has a good chance of starting most games with Firmino being out for a few weeks. ESR is just great value meaning you can upgrade elsewhere. He's a regular starter as well and you need a full bench over the December period.

I would keep Dias, find someone else to upgrade to TAA.

But to answer your question, King had 17 goal attempts in the last 6 weeks compared to 8 of Pukki.

Little help guys below, this is how I'd be lined up for this GW:

    Sanchez
    James - TAA - Cancelo - Chillwell*
    ESR - Son - Salah - Raphinha* - Gallagher
    Vardy
    __________________________________

Realise Rapha may be passed for, but have made a few options:

    A) Chillwell > Rudiger/Alonso
    B) Chillwell > Reguillon
    C) Chillwell + Raphinha > Jota + 5.7 and below DEF (-4)
    D) Chillwell + Raphinha > Bernado + Rudiger (-4)

Just depends if I'd rather have Jota or Bernado I suppose, and I know a hit shouldn't be on the cards but I really do like options C & D.

    Any opinions appreciated thanks gents.

This article is super informative, but I don't know what to make of it yet. I'm not sure this info will actually influence any future transfers. Like if I want Cancelo, I don't think him being rested a couple of times in December (which may happen outside EPL anyway) matters. Need to think about it more. Anyone else got thoughts or strategies around the busy period?

Pick the ones you want except one who will be going to Afcon and make sure your bench is really strong. My cheapest bench position will be Dennis at 5.2 third on the bench. These cheap full backs and playing 4 or even 5 at the back makes a strong bench easy to get. But you probably are limited to 2 premiums max.

Thanks. I've flagged AFCON and certain players (Cornet, Dennis) as no-gos. Although you might be okay with your Dennis oversight, as Nigeria haven't used him for awhile.

Have snookered myself on squad depth a bit this year, which is frustrating because I was way ahead of that curve last season to my benefit. But can be corrected.

It seems like you think otherwise the additional games are a bit of a non-issue?

Never as much rotation as we think there will be over the festitive period and I might sound stupid saying this but Pep does not seem to be rotating as much this year.
I had a really strong bench but broke that to get Son and the first week I only get 10 out instead of points on the bench it’s a very tricky equation to get right all the time. Maybe a third cheap bench player who plays 90 and gets you 2 points at least is good enough but I think first and second bench need to be pretty strong.

I think the Pep roulette stuff gets overplayed, especially at the back. Until they wrapped up the title last season Dias, Stones, Walker and Cancelo played all but a couple of games. The front 6 is has mostly been injuries/fitness rather than rotation when the games matter too. It's not he's making wholesale changes every match. I think Tuchel is probably worse.

IMO - Jota probably yes, Reguilon probably no.

Chelsea are fixture proof, Spurs are still very unproven/bad. I think to pick a player in an average team over a player in an excellent team because of fixtures. I doubt Reguilon is going to outscore Alonso over the short or medium-term regardless of the matchups.

Also think having Salah and James is irrelevant to the question.

It can go either way and I'm kinda in the same position but I am quite certain I'd prefer Alonso over arrghh, just in a far superior team, and the way Spurs are playing I don't see any 'easy' fixtures for them. GW14: Hold
    GW15: Jiménez & Brownhill/Gilmour to B Silva/City mid and 4.4 FWD.

I quite like this initial move due to Raphinha being a probable trade GW16 (fixture swing); Jota could also go up 0.1 before deadline.

It's three week plan with four transfers where two are bench fodder enablers? Needs nobody else to get injured, lose form, or emerge as "essential" otherwise its hits or abandoning the plan. Definite tightrope being walked, hope you can stay on 🙂

That is true but we are looking at a short space of time, two GWs after making my moves this week.

Yes, that is the plan currently but should someone get injured, as you mention, then I am still in the position of wanting to do nothing next week. And the position of having 2 FTs the following week.

Does anyone think this is a good draft move? I am stuck and need help. I am very frustrated with KDB atm and think Jota may outscore with Firmino and AFCON.

The trade would be: KDB and Wilson for Jota and Edouard which I plan to maybe pick up for Pukki or Benteke.

    A) Walker
    B) Reguilon

    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Cancelo James Alonso *****
    Salah Jota Raphinha ESR Luiz
    Kane Antonio 4.5

I'd be tempted by a budget defender and putting cash into either mid/fwd.

4.5 > Dennis the only viable upgrade

I was thinking possibly Raphinha to a City mid when fixtures turn maybe.

Who do we think is more likely to score more FPL points over the next 4-5 GW's?
    1. Alonso
    2. James
    3. Toss up really

Still have the WC and need a replacement for Chilwell. Already own Rudiger.

Think I will do Chilwell to Alonso to get this team - good to save the other transfer for next gw?

    Sánchez
    Cancelo, Alonso, James, TAA
    Raphinha, Salah(C), Son(VC), Sarr
    Jiménez, Toney

    Steele, Gilmour, Antonio, Duffy
1 free transfer, 0.4 million in the bank

Thoughts on these moves for a hit? Kane chilwell > vardy james

Can you do Chilwell to James without the hit?

If not maybe look at Alonso

0.2m short of a straight swap. Think James is essential in the form he's in.

I have Kane and really contemplating the move to vardy but it’s hard to look past Kane’s fixture. Perhaps just get James. Not sure I’d do the Kane move for a -4.

Need to downgrade somewhere to afford James. Vardy's fixture look decent too?

People are selling Vardy also. I sold Antonio for Dennis and decided to change formation. Dennis is decent enough for his price.

    Antonio to Jim?

Usually wouldn't bother as its a couple of transfers wasted but feel as though even past GW15 he will perform better than a tired Antonio

    Antonio to Pukki?

    Antonio: mci, BHA, CHE
    Pukki: WOL, new, tot

Pukki has new manager bounce with Norwich as has scored in the last two games. Antonio has done bugger all lately and two of the top sides in the next three...

Wolves just beat a far better team in WH scoreless - and Totenham seem like they’re turning a corner defensively.

Norwich fixtures for sure better. Just not sure good enough for that move myself.

It is not who you get, it is as much who you sell. And the long term injury makes selling Chilly easy.
