Meet the Manager – Great and the Good league founder Greyhead

Joe (@FFScout_Joe) chats to Greyhead(@Greyhead19) to find out what he has learned from tracking the best managers in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in his Great and the Good league.

Each week, Fantasy Football Scout regulars can learn the tactics, player selections and captaincy choices of the best managers in FPL thanks to Andy, aka Greyhead, and his Great and the Good article.

He created this league four years ago to track the strategies used by those with regular high finishes.

This research has already paid off, helping him to a top 100 finish in 2018/19 to add to another previous top 10k campaign. This time around he is once again doing well, currently at 8,370th in the rankings.

He chats to Joe about some of the characters in the league and how he has been learning from their weekly moves over the years.

Have Magnus Carlsen’s maverick tendencies influenced him? Or is he swayed by dullard planners?

Greyhead takes us through the Great and the Good’s latest template and he reveals the best strategies for success that he has adopted.

As a snapshot of his thinking, he discusses his own Gameweek 13 plans, transfer issues and captaincy selection. In addition, Joe and Greyhead look ahead to 2021’s remaining fixtures and some of the latest expected statistics kings to consider before the year-end.

Joe, who is a regular in the league, also questions why Greyhead himself is not included, given his own strong track record.

This chat is available below:

The Meet the Manager series is where Joe chats to FPL managers with a strong record of success, an interesting view of the game and are offering the community a unique insight into Fantasy management.

So Chilwell >> Alonso? 0.2 short for James.

Or take a hit and get James?

    Sanchez
    TAA. Cancelo. Chilwell
    Salah(C). Jota. Raph. Gallagher
    Kane. Antonio. Toney
    (Foster. White. Livra. Gilmour)

Same dilemma. Thinking Kane > Vardy to fund the move. It’s either that or get in Alonso instead of James.

    Thoughts on these 2FTs?

    B) Chilwell + Toney > James + Benteke

When Watford's fixtures turn I plan to do Hwang > Dennis, which is why Benteke seems like a good differential for now.

The alternative is Chilwell > Alonso and save FT

    How does this WC look?

    Ederson (Foster)
    James Alonso TAA Cancelo (Lamptey)
    Salah Jota Gundo Gallagh (Gilmour)
    Kane Benteke (Davis)

      Gunn Bowen Dennis Allan

      How’s this WC?

      Ederson Foster

      James, Rudiger, Alonso, Cancelo, TAA

      Salah Jota Bilva Bowen ESR

Happy with benching points, interchange based on form/ fixtures

Bold going with triple Che defense. But can pay off massively tbf.

        On WC too, great team.

Got similar but not brave enough for a triple Chelsea defense. I'm tempted with Bilva, but going Gundo instead.

Has anyone thought to see the impact of transfers taken so far this season?
I completed a little spreadsheet ignoring the the wildcard. I treated each transfer, free or otherwise to cost 4 points.
I projected the decision over 5 gameweeks or less if the initial transfer lasted for less.
I have made 24 transfers excluding the wildcard (costing 88 points)
I have made ground 110 points (22 net) by GW12
There have been some disasters there too (ESR to Havertz, Jota to Mbeumo, Rahina to Foden costing a net 55 point loss)
I know it is a simplistic way of doing things but it helps disprove the myth that transfers are unwise.

Getting rid for Foden if Pep rules him out.

There are 3 games in a week. If he's not ready now the chance of him being involved midweek are slim as well.

I see a few arguing that those who need to take a hit to get James in might as well wait until next GW.
But considering it seems a strong possibility he'll get rested against Watford, so if he get's attacking returns against United this GW as well, you might be looking at an additional 0.2-0.3m counting from today. So maybe better looking at the move as long term and take the hit - or just get Alonso
