FPL Gameweek 13 round-up: Sunday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 13 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles for Saturday and Sunday will take the place of the usual Scout Notes this week.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Phil Foden (£8.2m) and Jack Grealish (£7.6m) both missed Manchester City’s 2-1 win over West Ham United on Sunday with unspecified minor issues, along with Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) who continues to isolate following a positive Covid-19 test.

For West Ham, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) was replaced just after the hour mark, with David Moyes later saying:

“He is okay, his back is stiff after going into the goalpost. He was in spasm really and couldn’t move his leg well at that point.”

Elsewhere, Jarrod Bowen (£6.4m) surprisingly dropped to the bench, but it was a tactical move, with Arthur Masuaku (£4.4m) preferred for the reasons outlined by Moyes below:

“I think it’s the amount of crosses Manchester City put in your box from both sides. I think it’s how you defend them. They overload both sides when they’re crossing and they are very good at it. They’re probably number one in the Premier League for that. So that was the thought behind Arthur (Masuaku) and also, it gave us a little bit of left-sided balance which I thought I needed today as well.”

Meanwhile, Ben Foster (£4.1m) was absent from Watford’s matchday squad with a groin injury, along with Ismaila Sarr (£5.9m) and Nicolas Nkoulou (£4.5m), while Emmanuel Dennis (£5.3m) and Adam Masina (£4.3m) will both be assessed having picked up knocks.

“I’m not sure how long Ben (Foster) will be out for, but Bachmann made some good saves and I am comfortable with him in goal. With Dennis and Masina, I’m not sure at the moment. Tomorrow we’ll check everybody because Dennis came out and Masina didn’t finish well.

As for Everton, they welcomed back Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.4m) and Demarai Gray (£5.6m) to their starting XI and bench respectively, with the former’s performance discussed by Rafa Benitez after the game.

“When a player is out for a while you expect he will give everything and he did it. In the first half he was a little out of position but in the second half he was better.”

On the suspension front, Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) picked up his fifth booking of the season and will now miss City’s midweek clash at Aston Villa, with either John Stones (£5.3m) or Nathan Ake (£4.8m) expected to step in, while Joao Cancelo (£6.6m) moved onto four cautions, and is now just one yellow card away from a ban.

“There is no reason why. I would like Nathan to play more than he is playing but Aymer (Laporte) is playing really well. For this specific game, John was not quite well the last two days. He was a little bit sick, with a fever after the game with PSG. That’s why we played Aymer. He is suspended for the game against Aston Villa, so [it’s] a new chance for the other guys.” – Pep Guardiola at his post-match press conference, when asked why he’d rotated his centre-backs so often this season

Elsewhere, Sergi Canos (£5.5m) andBruno Fernandes (£11.6m) are both now on four yellow cards, but Everton will welcome back Richarlison (£7.4m) for Wednesday’s Merseyside derby, having served his one-match suspension.

GAMEWEEK 13 TAKEAWAYS

FORWARDS HIT BACK

After Saturday’s games, no Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward had returned either a goal or assist, as the shouts for going even ‘bigger at the back’ grew louder. That may still be the case, but with Ivan Toney (£6.7m) and Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) both on the scoresheet today, plus Watford duo Josh King (£5.6m) and Emmanuel Dennis, it has at least given us something to think about.

The latter two are perhaps the most interesting, not only due to their form, but also their budget price tags. Notably, King took on penalties in the absence of Ismaila Sarr (£5.9m) today, converting his first-half spot-kick after Dennis was fouled, and may well remain on them now given the Senegalese wingers back-to-back misses in Gameweek 12.

As for Dennis, following today’s goal and assist, he has now produced 11 attacking returns in just 12 Premier League appearances. Remarkably, only Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) has more with 20.

LEICESTER ASSETS BACK ON THE FPL RADAR?

Despite failing to score in each of his last four Premier League appearances, Jamie Vardy provided two goals on Sunday as Leicester City beat Watford 4-2 in an entertaining clash at the King Power Stadium. Encouragingly, the veteran forward produced five shots in the box, more than he had managed across his previous four matches combined, while his 12-point haul rewarded the owners who kept faith despite his blanks. The Foxes’ next three fixtures suggest further returns could be on the way, too.

Leicester’s win was only their fifth from 13 Premier League matches, but they did look more comfortable – at least in an attacking sense – in today’s 4-2-3-1, which saw Vardy flanked by Ademola Lookman (£6.0m) and Harvey Barnes (£6.5m). However, it was the performance of James Maddison (£6.6m) which stood out most, as he thrived as a no. 10 and looked back to his best after a terrible start to the campaign. The playmaker was at the heart of everything his team did well, and ended the day on 16 FPL points, via a goal, two assists and three bonus points.

“It was great, you can see Maddison’s quality, he was a real inspiration for us. We always have a point to prove every single day. For him it was looking at his game, he knows this is a game and a level where you are always looking to prove yourself. You can never be calm with that, you always have to be intense. You are seeing the work, not just with him but the confidence returning to the team. It’s not about the one player, it’s about the team but he was excellent today.” – Brendan Rodgers

RONALDO BENCHED AS CARRICK OPTS FOR CONSERVATIVE APPROACH

Despite missing three key defenders – Raphael Varane (£5.5m), Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Luke Shaw (5.1m) – United looked better defensively in Gameweek 13, as a more conservative approach earned them a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Even though they failed to record a single shot on target during the first-half, they scored against the run of play via Jadon Sancho (£8.9m), who netted his first Premier League goal since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Now, if he can nail down a spot in the starting XI, he could perhaps emerge as an option for our midfields, especially given United’s improving schedule, though it is worth noting caretaker manager Michael Carrick said after the game that Ralf Rangnick, who is expected to be announced as the Red Devils’ interim boss, was not involved in his team selection or tactics against Chelsea.

As for Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m), the move to bench him certainly caused plenty of discussion prior to kick-off, which Carrick touched on in his pre-match interview:

“A few tweaks and changes from the other night, to change things up a bit. Cristiano is probably our standout name, but it’s just a gameplan, ideas. I had a good chat with Cristiano actually, he was great, and we’ve decided to go like that today. Really looking forward to the game.

It’s a decision just to pick a team, to be honest. I don’t think it needs more drama than that.

Everyone is fine, all the boys who have come out of the team have been terrific around the place, Cristiano included, fantastic with the boys, supporting them 100 per cent and ready to come on if and when needed.

We’re happy with the team we’ve picked, for sure. We’ve come here to try and win the game, like we do every single game.”

BURNLEY V TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR POSTPONED

Sunday’s Premier League game between Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur at Turf Moor was called off shortly after the line-ups were announced due to heavy snow. Attempts to clear the pitch were unsuccessful as the undersoil heating failed to cope and snow fell as quickly as it was being cleared.

No details have yet been given regarding the rescheduling of the game, though initial reports have suggested that it is unlikely to be played this year, with Spurs already facing a packed December schedule.

“We were ready for the game and I’m sure they were as well. A lot of people have worked very hard here over the last couple of hours but the pitch just continues to recover every time they clear it. Our goalkeepers have just gone out to warm up and the ball’s collecting snow.

The referee explained the safety angle as well, so I think they’ve just made as early a decision as possible. The ref said we’d have to keep stopping to clear the lines. And of course, there is the safety angle, so I think it’s a joint decision from everyone concerned.

I made it clear – if it could be played, we wanted it played, as did their manager [Antonio Conte]. A joint decision was made eventually and I can’t see how it could go ahead with the way the pitch is.” – Sean Dyche

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 13

Ilkay Gundogan’s (£7.2m) 1.35 xGI total was more than any other player on Sunday, though Josh King was a close second, having benefitted from a first-half penalty, as did Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

Ademola Lookman also features thanks to his close-range goal, which carried an xG value of 0.77.

James Maddison’s five created chances was only bettered by one other player in Gameweek 13, while Gundogan, Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m), Tom Cleverley (£4.8m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) also posted encouraging totals.

However, none of Sunday’s names rank in the top five xA performers, which suggests the quality of chances they provided for their team-mates wasn’t quite as good as others this weekend.

Didn't realise you were ranked so highly, great effort.
Not a TERRIBLE week considering the players missing.

I lost 25k places after a 53(-4). No Jota was the difference it seems.

Worried we won't get much on Foden before next deadline so depends how bad you want him, price changes and all.

Thanks mate, the 1,500 was my highest ever OR - the pressure got to me!! Not terrible I guess, and unfortunate - Jota the primary difference but no Spurs game (Son) hurt a lot! We go again!

That's my gut feel too, Pep will likely not give much away will he... will you hold if thats the case ?

          No Kane for me either.

I feel a bit disheartened rushing to get James in with a blank and congestion coming up instead of Jota, but that's hindsight for you.

I feel like City attack is necessary during this time, but don't want to take a hit
So could do Foden to Bilva or Jota this week and maybe lose Raph the following week for the other.
I want to resist but also considering whether Liverpool rotate the front 3. I'd expect Salah to start vs Everton which might mean he sits vs Wolves. Maybe Origi gets a start, have seen some speculation so yeh don't know what i'll do yet.

Hindsight is a bugger in this game! But you have James and hes surely a great long term pick providing he stays fit.

If holding Foden I'm hopeful Jota gets a rest for Origi like you suggest...

If Pep says Foden is fit and available then surely its a hold ?!

Pretty much, would hold. Personally can only get Jota for free in one move which is via Foden. Easier to do it the following week but if Foden ruled out then maybe you just make switch now then find a way to get city attack elsewhere. Silva is a good price

Same as not willing to lose Salah or Son to fund.

If Foden is fit a straight swap for Jota is too risky, I'd very likely hold (hope Jota blanks) and use 2FT to work him in for GW15, Raph Jim >> Jota King / Toney is a current option...

If Foden is suggested as likely to miss out again then Jota is probably the right move then get a city attack for GW15, Bilva a decent option for sure...

That was a really funny season where the CAR average score was by far the highest of any country.

Yes, there used to be a table of the top countries on the FPL Home Page, and CAR was number one that season.

I thought about changing my team name to Greased Lightning as a reference to cars, but decided to stick with England instead.

Rough: Lost 18pts over last 2 GWs with the transfers I've made. Would be 3 pts off top 10k had I done nothing.
Smooth: Keeping faith in Vardy and finally got Dennis's points off the bench this week due to Spurs no show.

Rough: Replacing an injured Chilwell with Reg for the no-show in the snow. Nothing remotely like last week, though, when I accidentally confirmed a -16 because someone asked me to turn the lights down on my phone in the middle of the night. Freehitted in panic, and lost 20 p on my original team instead.

Smooth: Transferring out Raphina two weeks before planned for Jota in a last minute hit. Smooth right now, that is.

Rough: Mbeumo blank again. City last min CS wipe. Chelsea double def CS wiped.

Smooth: TAA(C) differential paid off. Held onto Vardy and he delivered. Sa and Jota hauls contributing to massive green arrow to 22k OR.

      Smooth - Antonio to king
Rough - the move was to find triple Spurs, getting Son in to join Kane and Reg, only for the game to be called off. Don’t worry. Brownhill, Livramento, and Armstrong combined for 2 points!

Rough: Kane no show gave me Bissouma for 2 points off the bench.

Smooth: accidentally left Foster in and Sanchez on the bench so the Foster no show was a stroke of luck. Small green of 20k. Jota haul helped

Making small ground most weeks. Can't seem to jump any more than that.

60 pts. Smoothish. Up from 116k to 90k.

      Smooth: Jota's bounty.

Rough: just 5 points from Cancelo, Alonso and Antonio on Sunday. Not sure what to do with Antonio as I did not see any goal attempts.

      Rough
Auba disappoints again, he really has been a rough the last few weeks when i think about the points he should have had, also Reg, Son, Foden no shows, with only 4pts climbing from my bench

      Smooth
64 pts helped by no Chelsea as i sold Mount instead of Foden for for Jota, which ended up being the correct decision as my Allan autosub outscored him by 1pt 😆

Best gameweek of the season here, 268k GW rank for 69 points and up to 229k OR.

All smooth. Brought in Gallagher for Sarr and Kane for Ronaldo. The Kane no-show gave me Ben White off the bench so 8 points up there. Salah(c), last weeks recruit Jota bracing, Trent, Sanchez and Toney all returning.

Still got my wildcard and yet to take a hit too!

After weeks of smooth, a huge dollop of rough was delivered this GW!

      Rough:
      - Blanks for 7 players and 3/4 players who returned had high EO
      - Decided to hold Mount and not get Jota because of the bad weather
      - Owned Kane (sold Vardy 2 weeks ago to get him)

      Smooth:

season keeper is just a term, we arent going to keep Raph when he isnt even in the country. There are caveats, same as if they hit terribel form, Salah is included in that.
But typically, if fit and well you have them. But it is a bit different when the whole team is playing bad

Yeah I’ve been doing NBA for 8 years now? More complicated stat-wise and requires more attention I think.

Probably need to keep things in context. Salah was overperforming like nobody's business and it was unrealistic for that to continue for such an extended period. Still only 1 blank in 13 matches.

From the eye test, his performances have barely changed but with the likes of Trent upping his game, there's just more avenues to goal for the team. On pace to smash his assist record (12) since joining the club. Already on 9.

Liverpool have scored 39 goals in 13 games
Front 3 have contributed 25 of those- Salah 11 goals. Mane/Jota 7 goals each. Only Vardy has scored more than Mane/Jota

Guys I need funds to get Alonso so who makes way…?

Raph ➡️ Doucouré (or someone else at 5.4 or less?)

Toney ➡️ Dennis (although I’m worried bout Dennis possibly going AFCON)

Get Alonso or Kane? No Spurs cover yet. If I get Alonso I won't be able to get Kane (don't worth a hit).

I'd like to apologize for the Cancelo and James blanks, as i brought them both in as part of a hit package before last deadline. Pitched Chilly and Foden to pay for them.

Oh, and City can go do one. No more attacking assets ever again.

I benched Antonio to play both ESR and Gallagher. Underwhelming.

But Sanchez! My boy gets it done!

Ooh nice. He's gone full purple patch last couple weeks.

Ok...so it's our fault then re: James/Cancelo. I couldn't believe James' returns the last month. Hadn't been paying as much attention due to work. Surely the way to ice him is to get him. Classic FPL.

I even had James between his GW 2 haul and GW 9 extravaganza. Wtf, Reece? Why?

Frustrating for sure. I sold James the week of his 21 pointer, for Chilwell as I was expecting more cameos with Azpi.
Reversed the trade this week. Brighter days ahead.

I know everyone says forwards are trash this season, and they are correct - the designated forwards are a bit trash. But isn't part of the problem how FPL assigns players?

Example - why are Salah, Jota and Mane mids? I always see Liverpool lined up as 4-3-3, and they are always in the forward/front 3. And Jota (MID) has virtually shared the same role with Firmino (FWD) the last two seasons.

Just those three listed as forwards changes the entire conversation.

Back 4 and back 3 with two wingbacks is a bit more contentious, but someone more tactically minded will have to explain the Liverpool one (and there are other examples) to me.

Salah, Jota, and Mane are mids because they track back.

True, there are plenty of options up front in Sky FF where they group the wide forwards with the number 9s. Salah, Mane, Son, Jota, Sterling, Greenwood. Notable exceptions: Hwang and ASM listed as midfielders.

I'd definitely expect Jota to be a forward in FPL next season, probably Mbeumo, maybe Son depending on Spurs' formation going forward. But it will be weird seeing Gabriel Jesus as a midfielder. Torres maybe the only one who's playing in the central role often enough to be classed as a forward for City.

fpl seems to think that forwards means strikers

      433 means 2 wide players and a forward, 442 means 2 forwards

Mbeumo has played 9 games in the 2 up front, if Brentford continue playing that, he would register as a forward next season.

Dennis on the only other has played up front 4 times and on the wing 8 times so would become a mid.

Jota is 11 as a forward currently so he would change.

          352 is 5 mids right?

            • 12 Years

depends...it's usually 5 defenders because it's typically played with wingBACKS. So technically it's 532 but people interchange 3 and 5 at the back for some reason.

a flat 5 in midfield which is less common would be the 'real' 352 with 3 backs and 5 defs.

Anyway, back to the original discussion, a 433 utilizes 3 up front, 2 wide FOWARDS and 1 striker.
