FPL Gameweek 13 round-up: Sunday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from the day’s Gameweek 13 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles for Saturday and Sunday will take the place of the usual Scout Notes this week.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Phil Foden (£8.2m) and Jack Grealish (£7.6m) both missed Manchester City’s 2-1 win over West Ham United on Sunday with unspecified minor issues, along with Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) who continues to isolate following a positive Covid-19 test.

For West Ham, Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) was replaced just after the hour mark, with David Moyes later saying:

“He is okay, his back is stiff after going into the goalpost. He was in spasm really and couldn’t move his leg well at that point.”

Elsewhere, Jarrod Bowen (£6.4m) surprisingly dropped to the bench, but it was a tactical move, with Arthur Masuaku (£4.4m) preferred for the reasons outlined by Moyes below:

“I think it’s the amount of crosses Manchester City put in your box from both sides. I think it’s how you defend them. They overload both sides when they’re crossing and they are very good at it. They’re probably number one in the Premier League for that. So that was the thought behind Arthur (Masuaku) and also, it gave us a little bit of left-sided balance which I thought I needed today as well.”

Meanwhile, Ben Foster (£4.1m) was absent from Watford’s matchday squad with a groin injury, along with Ismaila Sarr (£5.9m) and Nicolas Nkoulou (£4.5m), while Emmanuel Dennis (£5.3m) and Adam Masina (£4.3m) will both be assessed having picked up knocks.

“I’m not sure how long Ben (Foster) will be out for, but Bachmann made some good saves and I am comfortable with him in goal. With Dennis and Masina, I’m not sure at the moment. Tomorrow we’ll check everybody because Dennis came out and Masina didn’t finish well.

As for Everton, they welcomed back Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.4m) and Demarai Gray (£5.6m) to their starting XI and bench respectively, with the former’s performance discussed by Rafa Benitez after the game.

“When a player is out for a while you expect he will give everything and he did it. In the first half he was a little out of position but in the second half he was better.”

On the suspension front, Aymeric Laporte (£5.5m) picked up his fifth booking of the season and will now miss City’s midweek clash at Aston Villa, with either John Stones (£5.3m) or Nathan Ake (£4.8m) expected to step in, while Joao Cancelo (£6.6m) moved onto four cautions, and is now just one yellow card away from a ban.

“There is no reason why. I would like Nathan to play more than he is playing but Aymer (Laporte) is playing really well. For this specific game, John was not quite well the last two days. He was a little bit sick, with a fever after the game with PSG. That’s why we played Aymer. He is suspended for the game against Aston Villa, so [it’s] a new chance for the other guys.” – Pep Guardiola at his post-match press conference, when asked why he’d rotated his centre-backs so often this season

Elsewhere, Sergi Canos (£5.5m) andBruno Fernandes (£11.6m) are both now on four yellow cards, but Everton will welcome back Richarlison (£7.4m) for Wednesday’s Merseyside derby, having served his one-match suspension.

GAMEWEEK 13 TAKEAWAYS

FORWARDS HIT BACK

After Saturday’s games, no Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward had returned either a goal or assist, as the shouts for going even ‘bigger at the back’ grew louder. That may still be the case, but with Ivan Toney (£6.7m) and Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) both on the scoresheet today, plus Watford duo Josh King (£5.6m) and Emmanuel Dennis, it has at least given us something to think about.

The latter two are perhaps the most interesting, not only due to their form, but also their budget price tags. Notably, King took on penalties in the absence of Ismaila Sarr (£5.9m) today, converting his first-half spot-kick after Dennis was fouled, and may well remain on them now given the Senegalese wingers back-to-back misses in Gameweek 12.

As for Dennis, following today’s goal and assist, he has now produced 11 attacking returns in just 12 Premier League appearances. Remarkably, only Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) has more with 20.

LEICESTER ASSETS BACK ON THE FPL RADAR?

Despite failing to score in each of his last four Premier League appearances, Jamie Vardy provided two goals on Sunday as Leicester City beat Watford 4-2 in an entertaining clash at the King Power Stadium. Encouragingly, the veteran forward produced five shots in the box, more than he had managed across his previous four matches combined, while his 12-point haul rewarded the owners who kept faith despite his blanks. The Foxes’ next three fixtures suggest further returns could be on the way, too.

Leicester’s win was only their fifth from 13 Premier League matches, but they did look more comfortable – at least in an attacking sense – in today’s 4-2-3-1, which saw Vardy flanked by Ademola Lookman (£6.0m) and Harvey Barnes (£6.5m). However, it was the performance of James Maddison (£6.6m) which stood out most, as he thrived as a no. 10 and looked back to his best after a terrible start to the campaign. The playmaker was at the heart of everything his team did well, and ended the day on 16 FPL points, via a goal, two assists and three bonus points.

“It was great, you can see Maddison’s quality, he was a real inspiration for us. We always have a point to prove every single day. For him it was looking at his game, he knows this is a game and a level where you are always looking to prove yourself. You can never be calm with that, you always have to be intense. You are seeing the work, not just with him but the confidence returning to the team. It’s not about the one player, it’s about the team but he was excellent today.” – Brendan Rodgers

RONALDO BENCHED AS CARRICK OPTS FOR CONSERVATIVE APPROACH

Despite missing three key defenders – Raphael Varane (£5.5m), Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Luke Shaw (5.1m) – United looked better defensively in Gameweek 13, as a more conservative approach earned them a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Even though they failed to record a single shot on target during the first-half, they scored against the run of play via Jadon Sancho (£8.9m), who netted his first Premier League goal since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Now, if he can nail down a spot in the starting XI, he could perhaps emerge as an option for our midfields, especially given United’s improving schedule, though it is worth noting caretaker manager Michael Carrick said after the game that Ralf Rangnick, who is expected to be announced as the Red Devils’ interim boss, was not involved in his team selection or tactics against Chelsea.

As for Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m), the move to bench him certainly caused plenty of discussion prior to kick-off, which Carrick touched on in his pre-match interview:

“A few tweaks and changes from the other night, to change things up a bit. Cristiano is probably our standout name, but it’s just a gameplan, ideas. I had a good chat with Cristiano actually, he was great, and we’ve decided to go like that today. Really looking forward to the game.

It’s a decision just to pick a team, to be honest. I don’t think it needs more drama than that.

Everyone is fine, all the boys who have come out of the team have been terrific around the place, Cristiano included, fantastic with the boys, supporting them 100 per cent and ready to come on if and when needed.

We’re happy with the team we’ve picked, for sure. We’ve come here to try and win the game, like we do every single game.”

BURNLEY V TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR POSTPONED

Sunday’s Premier League game between Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur at Turf Moor was called off shortly after the line-ups were announced due to heavy snow. Attempts to clear the pitch were unsuccessful as the undersoil heating failed to cope and snow fell as quickly as it was being cleared.

No details have yet been given regarding the rescheduling of the game, though initial reports have suggested that it is unlikely to be played this year, with Spurs already facing a packed December schedule.

“We were ready for the game and I’m sure they were as well. A lot of people have worked very hard here over the last couple of hours but the pitch just continues to recover every time they clear it. Our goalkeepers have just gone out to warm up and the ball’s collecting snow.

The referee explained the safety angle as well, so I think they’ve just made as early a decision as possible. The ref said we’d have to keep stopping to clear the lines. And of course, there is the safety angle, so I think it’s a joint decision from everyone concerned.

I made it clear – if it could be played, we wanted it played, as did their manager [Antonio Conte]. A joint decision was made eventually and I can’t see how it could go ahead with the way the pitch is.” – Sean Dyche

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 13

Ilkay Gundogan’s (£7.2m) 1.35 xGI total was more than any other player on Sunday, though Josh King was a close second, having benefitted from a first-half penalty, as did Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

Ademola Lookman also features thanks to his close-range goal, which carried an xG value of 0.77.

James Maddison’s five created chances was only bettered by one other player in Gameweek 13, while Gundogan, Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m), Tom Cleverley (£4.8m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) also posted encouraging totals.

However, none of Sunday’s names rank in the top five xA performers, which suggests the quality of chances they provided for their team-mates wasn’t quite as good as others this weekend.

Quick turnaround between Gameweeks but still hoping to find a Community champion to take on the Scout Picks.

The current leader is Holmes, who set a 25-point winning margin in Gameweek 7.

Although opportunities to catch Holmes have been few and far between with the Scout Picks panel of Neale, Tom, Sam and Az coming out on top in 10 of the 13 rounds.

However, with rotation likely to impact the midweek matches, could this be a good Gameweek to take on the Scouts?

If chosen, you will have a budget of £83m to select 11 players but outside of that standard FPL rules apply - you need to use a normal FPL formation and with a limit of 3 players from a team. And remember to pick a captain and vice-captain.

If you’re interested in applying, email me at will@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk with the subject heading “Community Picks”. Include your FFS username and FPL Team ID and I’ll select a champion at random from the entrants for Gameweek 14 and 15.

This season there is a draw for a champion and a sub, just in case the champion is unable to get their selection in on time. The sub then becomes the champion for the following Gameweek.

The champion will be picked late Monday afternoon UK time, so make sure to enter by then. If selected you then have until 10pm Monday evening to send in your team, but tweaks are allowed right up to the deadline (in case of injuries announced in the press conferences).

    Good luck!

I don't know much about EO (effective ownership) in making transfer decision. I found one sample and would like to get recommendation on how to play EO.

Situation : To replace the injured player. I see two potential players as equally good replacement.

Option A : 27.5% EO in Top10k, but 8.2% in my rank tier
Option B : 15.5% EO in Top10k, but 29.2% in my rank tier

If I want to improve the rank, is it right that option A will give me the differential to managers around my rank and, if it works, will help me climbing up faster than option B?

How impressive was Marcus Alonso yesterday? Need a good few eye witness reports? Was in UK for surgery yesterday and missed the game. Stakes are high. Sitting on a an OR of 27th. Would really appreciate it. Have Rudiger and James already and firmly believe triple Chelsea is not a bad thing.

Not impressive. I wouldn't be surprised if Tuchel replaces him with Azpi or Pulisic, maybe if he underperforms again in the next game.

Yes thanks. Have looked at comparison. Feel an eye witness is better sometimes. Was following text commentary. Feel Watford away could see a haul for some of Chelsea defenders. Dier an option as well for next two and then bench until his double GW. Think Reguilon is rotation. Conte asking him to bust his balls every game. Looked knackered after Leeds match.

What my eyes saw was Chelsea players playing the ball to where Chilwell would have been, but Alonso wasn't quite reading them. It's the sort of thing that could be smoothed over a few training sessions; it's just that the hectic schedule might complicate things and cause Tuchel to lose patience. We'll see. I got him in last week so I'll have to stick with him as long as Tuchel does. But if I didn't have him, I'd hesitate in getting him in. And that means wait, not get a Spurs defender in lieu. I'd want to see solid evidence that they're worth it before committing to any Spurs player.

Excellent advice. Thanks. I'm actually interest in Dier as a 4.5M option to boost up funds for elsewhere, but again passing the eye test is another thing.

    Mornin',
Guess it's an opportunity to save a transfer..?

    Guaita
    Cancelo James TAA
    Salah Gallagher Raph Jota
    Toney Vardy Antonio

    Steer Gray Duffy Livra

I've made a few silly mistakes this season and hence find myself at 150k OR. Time to start climbing up before it becomes more difficult.

I want to switch Guaita and Duffy. Surely save this week and rid the next?

I feel like a rot is setting in. I'm somehow still OR 7K but I don't feel I deserve to be, and I think I'll start seriously sinking over this hectic period.
It started with Sanchez getting sent off. Without a backup GK I used my precious 1FT to replace him with Guaita and delay getting Jota. If I'd just gone into the GW with no goalkeeper, I'd be 4 points better off now and with a good use of that transfer.
So Jota was supposed to come in this week and would have done for a hit if I'd known Foden would be out.
But Chilwell got injured, and I did the predictable transfer to Alonso. I could have left Chilwell on my bench and got Jota, so I missed out on him and his price rises twice.
Now I've taken a hit and got Jota in (not for Foden, so I'll be fed up if he misses the midweek game). If I can get through the next few days without any further injuries, I can step back and assess my squad, rolling a transfer and getting back in control. Heck of a big 'if', though.

Did the same with Guaita and kicking myself for it. Jota seems a little mistake mate. Enjoy your good rank as it is now. Stick close to the template and you'll do fine.

Yeah, getting 11 players out is not essential. I got 70 points this week, but 5 of my players blanked. Prioritizing a no-show GK who often gets 1s or 2s anyway over Jota has set you back and now it's bandaid transfers

I know. But to be fair, at the time Palace were on a great run and were looking like shoring up the defence. I would have preferred Rammy but he'd priced me out. Guess I'll just leave the 4.5 (as was) GK and not think about it, as I should have done in the first place.

My rot started in the GW8 WC due to the news Son might have Covid forcing me to bring in KDB instead. Not that Son has done spectacularly either, but it forced me to go without Cancelo(whom I still ain't able to bring in), use another FT to bring in Son for KDB, and have had 3-4 players who've been cold in my team but gone on a streak when I've sold them. Now struggling to bring both Cancelo and Jota in. But all in all, me dropping ranks was all was due to the Son covid news snowball effect.

For what it's worth, there's no reason why you don't deserve it. You're a good, instinctual player. The fact that you have these concerns is a testament to that, imo, and, you know, your rank lol. I look to you for moves, fwiw.

That's so much; I'm afraid I'm not much use to you, as I generally don't telegraph my moves on here.
What I have been doing, but never intentionally, is as Sminky says, 'sticking closely to the template'. It does mean that when I have a bad week, so does the Top 10K and I don't fall far, but that's not a strategy on my part. If I see something the herd doesn't, I'll still go for it.

Would you captain Ronaldo or Kane over salah in gameweek 15? Think that could be one gameweek where salah might not be the best option and might be an opportunity to catch up..

As last week I have tried to offer a few insights into the games I watched over the weekend. They are opinions only but it might help for those who don’t get to see all the matches: 28 November: The dead zone gets my help.

Gunners 2 Newcastle 0: Newcastle so ineffective. Arsenal are nothing to be afraid of. The wingbacks were good for Arsenal and with Tavares having so many shots (poor ones). Newcastle had no link to their forwards and Arsenal killed them on the flanks. Great Martinelli goal and a deft touch by Tavares to put Saka through were the highlights. The ref missed a good penalty shout for Newcastle. Auba was awful and missed a sitter. MOTM Saka/Tavares. (Saka injured)

Palace 1 Villa 2: Watkins will pay off in the end. Villa have sorted a lot of issues out (Luiz badly missed after being sent off) McGinn never has a bad game and could have value after the horrid fixture run. Palace have been found out a bit in defense (Set pieces). An upturn for Villa and a downturn for Palace going forward I think. Will Gallagher carry on his good form? (Very dependent on the Palace setup). A game of 2 halves with Villa edging it in the freezing cold. MOTM McGinn

Pool 4 Soton 0: Only Livramento can hold his head up for Soton. Get Jota, never mind the cost. VVD was sublime in his reading of the game but the Pool defense could have been punished on a few occasions. Disappointed with Braja but Armstrong tried with the little he had. Robbo was more effective than TAA for a change. Thiago made them tick. Pool went through the motions second half. I think Hendo is coming to the end of the road. Avoid Soton. 4 clean sheet games so far Pool should not have had. MOTM: Thiago.

Norwich 0 Wolves 0: MOTM was Sa and Norwich were probably the better side. It was one of those “backwards and forwards” games. Williams should be on the 3.9 mil watch list. Like Leeds, Wolves look tired and their high pressing faded away. Not sure I want them for the many back to back games coming up. Rashica and Rupp (sub) were good and will assist Norwich going forward. Puki might be a good pick but not a good player. Wolves missed Podence. Real MOTM: the weather.

Brighton 0 Leeds 0: Raphina quiet and Trossard good in his old position, hitting the post. Maupay missed 3 absolute sitters. Brighton would have 8 more points with a decent striker. Leeds are physically worn out IMO. Lamptey was good and never got players to make use of his efforts. MOTM: Lamptey.

Citeh 2 Hammers 1: A weather plagued game where West Ham for the most part stood up and can be counted. Bowen a concern off the bench; Antonio worked hard to no avail; Rice a Rolls Royce; Cancelo passing superb; Foden missing; Laporte yellow misses next game; Gundo showing great value; Benrahma and Cresswell injury issues; Same Old from Citeh. Who do you choose going forward? MOTM: Cancelo /Gundo.

Leicester 4 Watford 2: Vardy trolling again! Watford defense shocking; Soyuncu did have a half decent game though (The first for a year I think). The first half hour the teams were toe to toe. Madison back to his best; I could only see the game in parts so little to talk about. Foster groin injury. MOTM: Madison.

Chelsea 1 ManU 1: united got away with it in the 1st half. All the players tried for a change but totally negative play. Hudson Odoi and Alonso ineffective with the ball on their side of the pitch; sensible but horrible game plan from United; Rudiger progressive; Ziyech taking RJames space; Second half, United get lucky and score; Alonso not up to speed yet; Sancho to look out for; MOTM Rudiger/Baily.

Brentford 1 Everton 0: Toney can only score via a penalty. Everton have little to offer. A comfortable but uninspired win for Brentford lying deep in the 2nd half against an impotent Everton; nothing really worth talking about: Everton relegation threat; MOTM Henry/Fernandez.

I hope the above is not too boring and there are not too many mistakes

Gundo is good value for money and has played a consistent role. KDB could affect later. Silva I love but I think less of a consistent points magnate IMO

Well-positioned at 35k but annoyingly was 0.1 (now 0.2) short of Tierney to James.

Thinking about just grabbing Alonso and hoping he can match the output. Thoughts? Team below.

    Ramsdale Foster
    Trent Cancelo Rudi (Tierney*** Livra)
    Salah Jota Raph ESR (Brownhill)
    Vardy Jesus Toney
