FPL Gameweek 14 round-up: Tuesday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Tuesday’s Gameweek 14 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes for this midweek round of action.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Norwich City winger Milot Rashica (£5.2m) was absent from tonight’s game, having tweaked his groin in training on the run-up to Gameweek 14.

Todd Cantwell (£5.3m) missed out with a Covid-related issue, with local press reports suggesting that he has come into contact with someone with the virus, rather than actually contracted it himself.

Elsewhere, Pascal Struijk (£4.4m) aggravated the injury which prevented him from playing 90 minutes at Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, and was removed at half-time, with Marcelo Bielsa saying after the game:

“Same problem as Saturday’s. All of us value he played with the physical limitations he played with. It’s a knack that’s very generous and shows how good a teammate he is to all of us.”

On the suspension front, Ciaran Clark (£4.4m) will now miss Gameweek 15 as a result of his red card, having denied a clear goalscoring opportunity after hauling down Teemu Pukki (£5.8m) after just nine minutes. In better news, Eddie Howe’s side can at least welcome back Matt Ritchie (£4.9m) and Jamaal Lascelles (£4.4m) on Saturday, who have now served their respective bans.

Joel Ward’s (£4.5m) yellow card means that he’ll now miss the trip to Old Trafford on Sunday, while Conor Gallagher (£6.1m) picked up his fourth booking of the season, and is now just one further caution away from suspension.

GAMEWEEK 14 TAKEAWAYS

THREE IN FOUR FOR PUKKI BUT NORWICH LACK FINAL-THIRD IDEAS

Despite playing against 10-men for the majority of tonight’s St James’ Park encounter, Norwich City failed to capitalise and lacked any real creativity in the final-third. That’s been a theme throughout their season as the Canaries have managed just eight goals in 14 matches to date. That total includes two penalties, while even over the last four Gameweeks – a period which has seen them take eight points from a possible 12 – they have managed just five big chances.

However, when his team needed him most, Teemu Pukki stepped up with an excellent finish to earn his side a draw. The Finnish international has now netted three goals in his last four appearances, while his total of five for the season is only bettered by Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) and Michail Antonio (£8.1m) amongst all forwards. Despite that, with a tough schedule for the remainder of 2021, the best time to join the ‘Pukki party’ may have passed.

RAPHINHA ON PENALTIES

With Patrick Bamford (£7.7m) missing and Mateusz Klich (£5.4m) substituted at half-time, both of Leeds’ regular penalty takers were off the pitch when Marcelo Bielsa’s side were awarded a late penalty at Elland Road. That was also the case as recently as Gameweek 9, when Rodrigo (£6.3m) converted from the spot against Wolverhampton Wanderers. As a result, many were expecting the Spanish forward to step up again, but instead, and to the surprise of many – not least his 20.1% ownership – it was Raphinha (£6.7m) who took it on and scored to net his sixth goal of the campaign. Notably, the Brazilian wasn’t on the pitch against Wolves, though it remains to be seen just how far up the pecking order he is when everyone is available.

GALLAGHER DEEPER BUT BACK ON SET-PIECES

Despite tonight’s blank, Conor Gallagher put in another lively shift at Elland Road, though he was positioned a little deeper than usual. As a result, he could only muster two penalty box touches, with his one shot in the box and zero created chances well below his usual standards. However, with Luka Milivojevic (£5.4m) dropping to the bench as Patrick Vieira opted for Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.4m) alongside Cheikhou Kouyate (£4.5m) in the engine room, he was at least back on set-pieces, which could be key to his FPL prospects moving forward.

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 14

Christos Tzolis (£4.8m) ends Tuesday’s action top for shots in the box (3), with a host of players just behind on two.

Notably, that includes Christian Benteke (£6.4m), who appeared off the bench on 68 minutes only to squander a couple of chances, including one at the back post.

In terms of chances created, Newcastle United duo Callum Wilson (£7.4m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.9m), plus Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), recorded three, followed by several Norwich players, as they pushed for an equaliser at St James’ Park.

If you watched the game tonight you wouldn't think that. Raphinha was useless and stole some points with that pen.

haha mate, I posted the exact same a bit earlier

I have that 0.1m buffer so it's different.

You're more than likely going to move Raph pretty soon for one of the City mids but you'd need to be prepared that you might not get incremental points straightaway

It's the risk of injury too that makes it harder as Gund is yet to play

You could hold and swap Gallagher for someone else if you had to so there are other avenues...

Haha mate another day another dilemma

I think I’m going to have to hold, I did an early transfer last week and it caused a -4 because of Chilwell injury

So probably sensible to hold and reassess tomorrow, if I’m priced out then look at use 2FT the following week

Just no city attacker v Watford is dangerous

    Bench one of:-
    A)pukki(TOT A)
    B)livramento(BHA H)
    leaning towards benching A.
Southampton have conceded only 4 goals in 6 home games this season and Brighton aren’t exactly clinical right now.

Okie - weird to be thinking about next GW already

    Ramsdale
    Alonso, James, Cancelo, TAA, Livramento
    Salah, Jota, Raphinha, Gallagher, Brownhill
    Vardy, Antonio, Jimenez.

    2ft - 0.5itb.

    I'm interested in the following players;
    - Cornet
    - Foden / Gundo
    - Sancho (maybe?)

    Looking to get rid of
    - Jimenez
    - Raphinha (prob. keep 1 week)

    Thinking;
    this GW : Jimenez & Brownhill > Cornet & Broja (2ft)
next GW : Raphinha > Gundog (could add in Livra > 4.0 to afford Foden)

Next GW is only a tad over 3 days away, so it’s not weird to be thinking about it now at all.

Not moves that I would immediately think of (possibly Gallagher to Cornet if it was me) but no reason why you shouldn’t do what you’re thinking of doing.

Raphinha tonight evidence of how risky it is to take out high ownership players, albeit he deserved a blank tonight. Kept Antonio for similar reasons however tempting it was to lose him

His returns should improve when Bamford returns in the next few weeks. He was good but not great in the last half hour tonight but not looking like he'd score. Leeds and Raphinha should only improve and 6 goals in 12 is decent for 6.7m.

I sold Son for Jota for this GW. Got fedup waiting for Son to get the finger out. Can get him back if he improves. Bad and all as Leeds have been only 4 players have scored more PL goals than Raphinha this season and he missed 2 games. Playing great for Brazil since he made his debut in October. Hard to see him staying at Leeds too long.

Realisitically how many players would you change on a WC now?

Given not much time to use it, I would target a fixture swing to make use of and make short term differential punts leading upto that date, safe in the knowledge you can bin them off quickly if don't pan out

    Anyone looking at Watkins?

In the next 15 gws Villa only play Chelsea and Liverpool of the big teams - and play all of the struggling teams. Might be an easy move from Jimenez as a set and forget.

I’d hold for a couple but like their next one against Leicester and want to ship Jimi this week.

Yeah if i see something good out of them this week i'd be keen - like most i was ready to start with him this year (ended up on Ings)

I think people have underestimated the value of holding a mid-value striker. I got Jimenez in gw4 and he has 5 returns in 10 weeks - which i think is pretty good really. If i got similar out of Watkins I'd be happy with that long term and to focues moves elsewhere.

agreed, Watkins could well be a set and forget for an extended period the way the fixtures are falling for us. Suspect he will tick over without being spectacular much like Jimi

Why does it hurt so much more when the clean sheet is lost in added time. The worst part is it was a horrible penalty that Guaita should have saved and he didn't even move. I've noticed a lot of the goals they concede he doesn't move.

Raphinha sold him. Was flatfooted then dived too late to his left. Good penalty.

Mate it was so slow and central he could have dove after it was kicked and saved it comfortably. Raphinha has only taken 5 professional penalties he's not exactly a seasoned specialist; you're trying to make it sound far easier than it is.

He was completely planted, his dive didn't get him half way to the post. It was the exact same as a shot he was flat footed for earlier in the game and as I mentioned in previous games. Jorginho hits stutter step/skip penalties into the corner and they're still savable.

I think he was definitely thrown off by the stutter, but it didn't inspire any confidence as a save attempt.

Palace stole my Villa clean sheet in the 94th min last week so I know how you feel, but coz it was palace again tonight I have no sympathy lol! 🙂 Also have Raphinha so, v happy with that.
I was thinking of going to Guaita myself but last few have convinced me otherwise, looked a little shaky tonight too at other points in the match

I have Kane and he is against Norwich next GW and despite that, I am still debating just keeping the captaincy on Salah as I don't trust him/Spurs. Time to sell him?

Ronaldo, Lukaku and even Vardy potential replacements but hold for now

      1. The Big Fella

Definitely holding for the time being. I didn't mean to sell this week. The alternatives you mention are either in doubt, trolls or not back yet anyway. There are no stand out strikers at the moment. I just meant this realisation was a wake up that a 12m+ asset clearly is not instilling me with the confidence that it should be for the price I have paid.

I wouldn't sell him now or even next GW. Who would I replace him with? Just sold Ronaldo and I think he may even lose his place as he doesn't press. Lukaku doesn't come back for a few GWs yet. Vardy is a troll. Antonio's form has dipped. I will see how he does this week and then decide.

I wouldn't sell him before Norwich now, would I? But going forwards, in the next few GWs, if I am doubting him against the worst team in the league, surely that is a sign he has to go.

Well obviously we're doubting him, he's been rubbish. But what happens against Brentford and Norwich will deternine your move.so it's a waste of time thinking bout it till then.

How the hell did Wilson get 37 bps from scoring a penalty and doing literally nothing else. 1 other shot off target, 3 chances created for xA of 0.01... Only 11 passes, a few dribbles but also lost every header.

    1. Sun Jihai

You get 24 for scoring, 6 for playing 60+ minutes, did a few key passes etc. Forwards who get a single goal contribution and don't do much more can do pretty well under the bonus system.

      1. Postman Ty
        • 9 Years

Cheers, I just find it so stupid that they're rewarded for scoring from one shot on target, but if they have a few more shots on and off they get punished. I think the whole system could use a bit of a rejig.

Yeah, it would almost be interesting if they didn't double reward goals/assists/clean sheet points and just have the bps focused on contributions around chances created, interceptions etc. Would result in more evenly spread scores but potentially a broader player universe in FPL rather than a narrower template list of viable options.

          1. Postman Ty

Ya, I'm hugely in favour of making defensive players more worthwhile, particularly holding mids. Maybe it would be less exciting/more random with points spread out too much, but the way things are feels too volatile sometimes and the options become very narrow.

Could've grabbed Alonso then before his price rise, but chose not to do so.

Chelsea's next 6 fixtures post this GW are West Ham, Leeds, Everton, Wolves, Villa & Brighton so not exactly straightforward shutouts but at the same time none of the "big 6".
And then GW21 is the difficult proposition as to whether you trade or hold + I already own James.

Gives me extra cash and also one less transfer down the line, lets see how it plays out.
