Frisking the Fixtures

Who has the best fixtures in FPL over the Christmas period?

Our regular frisk of the fixtures sees us assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) clubs and players with – in theory – the strongest run of league matches over the festive period.

We’ll take a glance at those with less favourable schedules in a follow-up piece.

Generally we take a look at the next six matches in this article but we’ll extend this to seven Gameweeks here, which takes us all the way to the New Year’s Day set of fixtures.

Our colour-coded Season Ticker is the primary source for this piece; using this tool as a Premium Member, you can sort by difficulty, rank by attacking and defensive potential or find budget rotation pairings. You can even set your own difficulty ratings, should you disagree with our own.

We’ll also point you in the direction of our look at the turnaround times between the December matches below:

BEST FIXTURES

MANCHESTER UNITED

Ralf Rangnick couldn’t have timed his arrival much better in terms of giving himself the best chance of handing Manchester United a new manager bounce.

Stiffer tests against Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea are now out of the way and United now remarkably don’t face another ‘big six’ club until Gameweek 28 in March, when they visit their cross-city rivals.

All of their opponents from now until the end of 2021 are, at the time of writing, in the bottom half of the table, too.

Crystal Palace, who provide the opposition in Gameweek 15, looked like being a tougher test a fortnight ago but injuries to Joachim Andersen (£4.5m) and James McArthur (£4.4m) have slightly derailed the Eagles of late and Joel Ward (£4.5m) will be suspended at the weekend.

In terms of FPL transfer targets, that’s more difficult, as we’ve yet to see what shape and personnel Rangnick favours. Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m) was benched in Gameweek 13, for example; was that Carrick’s decision alone or was, as some conspiracy theorists suggest, the veteran German pulling the strings already?

Jadon Sancho (£8.9m) is certainly garnering a bit of interest, given that he seems to have the attributes to thrive in Rangnick’s set-up, but we may have to wait a game or two to see just who looks like flourishing in a new-look United side.

MANCHESTER CITY

Pinpointing the best City assets is tricky for a different reason, as we enter the time of the season when Pep Guardiola’s starting XIs become even harder to second-guess.

Still, we’re not likely to be selling the likes of Joao Cancelo (£6.7m) even if the odd rest might be forthcoming in December.

City also have the advantage of a Champions League dead rubber on December 7, in between Gameweeks 15 and 16, and a full week of rest in between Gameweels 18 and 19, when seven other Premier League clubs are in EFL Cup quarter-final action.

As for the league fixtures themselves, some porous defences (Watford, Newcastle and Leicester have just one clean sheet between them this season) will provide inviting opposition for the likes of Ilkay Gundogan (£7.3m) and, if fit, Phil Foden (£8.2m), while Wolves and Leeds are hardly firing on all cylinders at the other end of the pitch, averaging less than one goal per game at the time of writing.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

The jury is still out on Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur, at least ahead of Thursday’s clash with Brentford.

Still, that encounter with the Bees is the first of three meetings with newly-promoted clubs between now and the New Year, while Leicester’s leaky backline – who haven’t kept a clean sheet since the opening day – means that the Gameweek 17 encounter at the King Power Stadium ought to really be a bluer shade on the ticker for the likes of Harry Kane (£12.3m) and Son Heung-min (£10.4m).

We might also have a juicy-looking Double Gameweek 21 for Spurs, should certain events in the EFL Cup quarter-finals transpire.

Gameweek 16 might still be a jumping-off point for many Fantasy managers in order to fund moves for Manchester United’s premium assets, as the backlines of Brighton, Liverpool and Crystal Palace (at least from open play in the Eagles’ case) have been three of the better-performing rearguards this season.

ALSO CONSIDER

Lukaku on target as Chelsea assets prosper at Arsenal 4

The Gameweek 21 clash between Liverpool (wol | AVL | NEW | tot | LEE | lei | che) and Chelsea (whu | LEE | EVE | wol | avl | BHA | LIV) is the primary reason why these two title challengers don’t feature higher up the Season Ticker in the period studied but reduce the lookahead to six Gameweeks and the outlook is rosier.

Back-to-back home matches for both clubs in Gameweeks 16 and 17 certainly catch the eye, albeit that does come after a tougher test for the Blues away at West Ham on Saturday.

The clean sheet prospects for Reece James (£6.3m) et al look particularly bright in between, with Leeds, Everton, Wolves and Brighton all in the bottom half for goals scored over the last six matches. Steven Gerrard seems to be making Aston Villa more of a compact, conservative team, too: the Villans are second-bottom for both possession and expected goals under his rule.

Antonio the most-sold FPL player of Gameweek 13 as budget defender Ait-Nouri impresses 1

Gameweek 18 looks like a good time to be targeting West Ham United (CHE | bur | ars | NOR | SOU | wat | cry) players again after their tough recent run but there is also an appealing match against Burnley sandwiched by trickier-looking London derbies: the Clarets have kept only two clean sheets all season, and one of those was against Norwich.

Burnley (new | WHU | WAT | avl | EVE | mun | lee) themselves have some decent fixtures littered amongst some harder-on-paper tests and we know from past experience that Sean Dyche tends to eschew rotation even in busy periods, which is a selling point itself with benchings and breathers rife elsewhere. Crystal Palace‘s matches (mun | EVE | SOU | wat | tot | NOR | whu) actually rotate very well with those of Dyche’s troops over the festive season, giving a run of Newcastle (a), Everton (h), Watford (h), Watford (a), Everton (h), Norwich (h) and Leeds (a) through to New Year, should those with sizeable budgets have the cash free to consider to a not-exactly-cheap Maxwel Cornet (£6.1m)/Conor Gallagher (£6.2m) pairing.

And anyone with Ben White (£4.4m) and Tino Livramento (£4.5m) in their squads has a good stretch of games at their disposal from now until the beginning of January. The Arsenal (eve | SOU | WHU | lee | nor | WOL | MCI) and Southampton (BHA | ars | cry | BRE | whu | TOT | NEW) defensive rotation gives a run of Brighton (h), Southampton (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brentford (h), Norwich (a), Wolves (h) and Newcastle (h) up until Gameweek 21.

Understood. Out of our hands now

If it's going to happen, it's best that it happens to a 180% EO player when most FPL subs have good fixtures

Much unlike Spurs and Burnley last GW

Klopp did say the other day that he doesn't like the intensity of the Mersyside derby cos its too rough, so it makes sense that he would want to protect his prize assets in this busy period, but that team has Robbo starting instead of Tsimikas which dosn't make sense if he is trying to protect his players as Robbo only recently had an injury

I've been looking at the template picks lately and I'm differentials to be gained in a lot of attacking positions. So I think there is room for managers to be brave right now. Just my opinion on where the template stands and how you could get ahead.

    Core

GK - As long as you're not on Raya/Foster you're fine.
Def - TAA, Cancelo, James, Alonso - Defenders are priority this season which is rather weird but once you have them then you can focus on other slots.
Mid - Salah, Jota - Practically essential considering the value of Jota and consistency of Salah.

    Mids

Raphinha - Didn't look like creating much vs CRY and his fixtures turn bad really soon. He will drop out of the template almost certainly.
Gallagher - I have him but I'm not that keen because his position in the team changes every game atm and that hurts his potential if he's deeper. His budget price and guaranteed minutes make him a pretty safe pick but it's a slot that you could use on a high potential differential and I'd recommend taking the risk. Gallagher isn't going to be putting up double digit hauls going forward. At least his stats and performances don't suggest that is likely.
ESR - Not got the best underlying stats but the fixtures are nice now and he's nailed in a good team. I like him probably the most of the 'template mids'.
Mbeumo - He's falling out of the template already. People are trying to move him because there are better mids.

    Forwards

Toney - I actually think he's one of the better template forwards. Nailed for 90 mins, on pens, cheap. Decent fixtures for the next few. He's a good pick although Pukki ticks most of the same boxes and is cheaper.
Kane - Pure hype atm. He's done nothing for weeks. If Spurs under Conte focus on defense first as they should he's unlikely to get double digit hauls and will most likely be capped at 9 points or so. It feels like a 'spend the money because I don't know what else to do with it' move. I own Kane and I don't have high expectations. He could of course explode, but if he doesn't over the next two games, will be assessing MUN assets carefully and likely go for one of them with the funds from Kane.
Antonio - His stats have fallen off a cliff AND he's a minutes risk because of congestion. We've basically just held onto him because there's no one else in the hopes that the good fixtures make him fire again. Gonna need to see a good performance against Brighton this week. I know it seems odd to have held this long and then plan to get rid, but he really doesn't have that much going for him.

Meanwhile here are the list of guys you could go for instead of the template picks.

Bowen - Great fixtures coming, top 5 underlying stats, mid-priced. I reckon he'll be the Raphinha replacement for a lot of people.
Cornet - Less nailed but still high potential, decent fixtures.
Gundogan - My favorite of the non-template mids. The only thing preventing him from becoming Jota-level ownership is the doubt over his starts. Gundo is one of the more flexible players in the team since he can play as a deeper 8 or false 9 and still maintain decent output. Pep is always a problem but we usually have one decent bench option so should be okay to cover.
Fernandes/Rashford/Sancho - MUN are about to embark on a really great run of games. These 3 guys are likely the biggest benefactors. I'm eyeing Bruno to replace Kane but Sancho/Rashford also interesting options. I'd say two more games to monitor and if they look decent, I'd move early to get one for the Christmas period.

More options include: Bernardo, Maddison, Bailey, Fornals, Trossard

In attack, the options are interesting and much less talked about.

Pukki - 90 mins and on pens. 5.8m. He's one of the best budget enablers alongside King. Just don't expect that much.
Watkins - One of my favorite differentials from now. Villa look good and he's nailed in the side. Could be on pens too, fixtures are turning from 16. Good price.
Jesus - Not one of my favorites but he's playing more and can be a good differential. It's not like other forwards are doing better so it's worth taking a risk on at least one forward.

Point is, there are 4 attacking positions that are open and I think getting on all the template picks of Kane, Gallagher, Toney, Antonio now doesn't make sense when they have shown no reason to be core parts of our team. Live a little, take some risks if you're trying to replace the likes of Vardy, Mbeumo, Raphinha. These 4 slots can be for differentials and you can change your formation too depending on who you go for and who you can afford: 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-5-1.

    A team like:

    Ramsdale
    TAA Cancelo James Alonso
    Salah Jota Gundo Bowen
    Jesus Watkins
    (Pukki/Toney, Cornet etc)

Is gonna perform very well going forward imo and has 4 decent non-template attacking options while also covering the core players that will decimate rank if you go without.

      Hi Camzy!

Agree with most, if not all of this

      I'm currently working towards this:

      DDG
      TAA Cancelo James Alonso
      Salah Sancho Foden
      Jesus Antonio DCL

      4.0 • Doucouré Livra Brownhill

Benteke + Jota for now, DCL + Doucouré when Firmino returns

I also currently have Son + Hwang + McCarthy, who'll probably become Sancho + Antonio + DDG soon

I still see the reasons applying to my starting the season with Antonio coming into play again from GW16 to WC27

That fixture run. I might even end up with double or triple West Ham, if other options aren't firing

Not with Norwich at home I'm not.

Point is more that if you're looking to replace and upgrade your picks, don't go for the template ones. Go for the ones that could come into the next template because the current template other than the defense + Salah + Jota are not doing enough and there's a chance you'll drop for the next emerging bandwagon so you might as well gamble to try and get on that wagon now.

I don't know about Ronaldo because of minutes, price and his place in a Rangnick team. Not ruling him out, but I just don't see myself getting him tbh. It's the price mainly.

If I was Rangick, Id just tell Ronaldo to mark the CB who can pass the best, and let Sancho and Rashford and Bruno press the rest of the backline. Seems like the best solution to limit Ronaldo's need to run around, but still accomplish the press

Then again, im not an accomplished football coach lol

Alonso. I usually VC the player who has the highest points potential and best fixture among those least likely to be rested, especially those with the fewest recent minutes

Since Alonso could also easily be my captain vs Watford, it's a win-win situation to me

Could be another 2-pointer. Could be a shock rest after only playing one game in the last XX matches. But from what I knew pre-deadline, he was my VC

I know that “rule” and it makes sense a lot of the time.

I think there’s a higher risk of James, Cancelo, Vardy etc being rested than the Liverpool game randomly getting postponed. It seemed the right choice in this instance.

Could this be worth a bench boost next week? I'd be using my 2 free transfers and 0.8m ITB to change Steele and Duffy to Dubravka and Davies.

    Sanchez v Southampton (A)
    Dubravka vs Burnley (H)

    Trent vs Wolves (A)
    Rudiger vs West Ham (A)
    Reguilon vs Norwich (H)
    Davies vs Norwich (H)

    Salah vs Wolves (A)

There's a chance that two or three of your 15 will be benched

This is the fixture congestion. It's the time to have a good bench because you might need them in your XI

    James, TAA, Cancelo, Marcal, Johnson
    Salah, Son, Raphina, Saka, Brownhill,
    Toney, Vardy, Hwag.
    FT: 2, Bank : 0.5 m

    A. Hwang, Raphina, Marcal -> Dennis, Jota, Williams (-4)
    B. Hwang, Raphina, Saka -> Dennis, Jota, ESR (-4)
    C. Hwang, Marcal -> Dennis, Williams (next gw can get gundogan / jota if not price rice)

I would not be moving ESR - Arsenal have no Europe to add to congestion and he’s pretty much nailed.

Upgrade Allan if you can instead - even to a 6.0m ish player.

      Jota now. Antonio soon

Firmino could be back in GWs 16 to 18, making Jota almost a free hit move if you get him in GW15. Max out on his returns now, then Antonio after Chelsea, imo

Even off the bench he can score goals plus he’ll get a fair share of starts.

His comments about it being a physical game did worry me slightly, almost like he was suggesting he needed to protect his main stars. Like you say though, imagine he rests big names & they get beaten, it would be bedlam.

I wouldn't be surprised to see stars rested. Klopp has already expressed concern about the physical nature of these derbies.

"It's always a completely different game, so I really very often don't like the intensity of the game, it's too much for me. I like physical football, I have no problem with that, we play that, other teams play that, but in that game very often people put too much in. I can't say it's my favourite game of the year to be honest, because of that."

I’m interested in watching Zinchenko if he plays today. I really think he’s a class player and can see him staking a claim for that spot.
Has been long injured this season so may just need time and opportunity.

ah yep - i knew what i meant at least...heh
Zinch could have role to play which would compromise Cancelo/Walker to a degree.

In that sense I'd say Walker is about as nailed as Laporte, Dias, Cancelo.

      2. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 3 months ago

Walker seems to have nailed the spot by being a blend of CB and RB, allowing Cancelo to be a blend of XX (he plays everywhere)

Zinch might expose them even more to the counter, as he's a natural CM so would also tend to drift inward and forward

I guess Pep is training that out of him, or maybe Pep will allow both Zinch and Walker roam free

But yeah, Zinch was injured for far too long to reliably predict his role in the team from now on, and that makes Walker less reliable for starts too, until a pattern is clear with all three fit for a while

Anyone else looking towards a WHU double from 16?

Something as cheap as Bowen+Johnson sounds juicy

Brought in Bowen today in prep. Got a strong squad so happy to bench in between. Looking forward to owning Antonio and Bowen for that run. Hope WHU really find their mojo again tonight

      Anotonio + Johnson for me

Sold Antonio on GW 8 WC with the plan always being to get him back in 18

Johnson the s a gift atm. Can’t wait to find a FT to shift Manquillo out for him

Honestly I'll be following them closely over this period cause a triple WHU with Antonio isn't off the cards

Man City "ITK" predicted right last time has a leaked lineup for City. Foden Laporte benched, Gundo and Walker not travelled.

      Nice

Glad I didn’t give into the Gundo hype

From 1 rotation risk to another

We need to pick our city mid of choice and stick. Will take a few benchings on the chin myself for the explosive potential that Foden has.

Maybe he’s right, maybe he’s wrong.

Seems like he had to go private though because of abuse maybe? Some in this community can be very passive aggressive if things don’t go their way...

Fellow Gundo owners, hopefully this means he is nailed for the Watford game which could be a cricket score, tonight should be tighter. Desperate i know......damn should have brought in Silva!
