Mario Balotelli sends Germany packing with a superb double enough to see off Joachim Low’s favourites and seal a meeting with Spain in Sunday’s final. Antonio Cassano and Riccardo Montolivo also pick up the points with an assist apiece, while Mesut Ozil signs off with converted spot-kick to take his total for the tournament to 25 points:

Italy 2 Germany 1
Cesare Prandelli made a single alteration to his starting XI for last night’s clash. The injured Ignazio Abate dropped out as Giorgio Chiellini returned after missing out against England with a thigh problem – Federico Balzaretti moved over to right-back, with Chiellini slotting in on the opposite flank.

Mario Balotelli grabbed a nine point return for his Fantasy owners after bagging a brace, though it could have been 10 if he hadn’t been cautioned for removing his shirt after hammering home the second. Antonio Cassano produced an assist to take his tally for the tournament to 16 points in the McDonald’s game – priced at 8.5 and 8.0 respectively, they offer strong mid-price options for Fantasy managers willing to bank on Italy finding a way past the Spanish defence. The omens are good; Prandelli’s side are the only team to score against Spain and, with four of Italy’s six goals between them, the strike duo are more than likely to play a part if Vicente Del Bosque’s backline is to be breached again.

In terms of creativity, Andrea Pirlo had a quiet game – the 8.1 priced midfielder provided only one goalscoring opportunity for his team mates last night; Daniel De Rossi was the most impressive with three and, bearing in mind the latter has a current ownership of 1.3%, could be a real differential punt for Sunday. Montolivo’s price tag of 6.9 is sure to pick up suitors after his assist, while Claudio Marchisio offered a decent goal threat after firing off two attempts and comes in at 7.0. At the back, Italy also offer value for those backing a clean sheet, with the likes of Federico Balzaretti and Andrea Barzagli costing 5.4 and 5.9 respectively.

Joachim Low tinkered with his team once again last night, making three changes to the side that defeated Greece 4-2 in the quarter finals. Toni Kroos, Lukas Podolski and Mario Gomez were all handed starting roles though the ploy clearly backfired and, with Italy establishing a 2-0 lead in the first half, the latter two were hauled off after the break for Marco Reus and Miroslav Klose. Germany arrived as strong favourites and were heavily backed by Fantasy managers but only Mesut Ozil produced the goods for his owners after slotting home a late spot-kick. The tournament ended disastrously for Gomez owners, in particular; after finishing the group stages as top points scorer, he managed to muster a total of two points over his last couple of matches.

If we sign debuchy, douglas and de jong, and manage to keep hold of our main players (except maybe Ba), then we would have a decent shot at challenging for 4th spot again. We would probably need a back up centre midfielder to if guthrie leaves.

As far as I know the idea behind signing Luke de jong was to replace Ba so he could well be on his way. Few people interested in Colo and Cabaye too, heard a bit about Simpson leaving too. You guys are definitely in for a good season though.

I would expect that De Jong would be a replacement for Ba. But the local journos suggest not. If we buy him as well as the two dembas, it will be a real statement of intent. I don't think any of the main guys will go unless we get a massive bid. Simpson will probably leave. But I would like to keep him as back up.

Nothing concrete. There was lots of talk of galatasary a couple of weeks back. I reckon it is 50:50 that he will stay.

Yeah I think signing him indicates Ba's departure but maybe he'll stick around, hope he does. Nah I think Cabaye has impressed a few clubs recently so perhaps some interest there, the rumour with Colo was about City looking for a replacement for Lescott but just a rumour. Would like Simpson to stay too.

Is de Jong versatille enough to go on the left of the 4-3-3 replacing Ba? Possibly a change back to 4-4-2 with Cisse and de Jong upfront?

From what I have read, he certainly sounds more like a traditional shearer style centre forward. I can't see him being able to play on the left. That's why it seems a bit strange to me. We played our best football in a 4-3-3. I would prefer us to buy someone suited to that role ie Hoilett, and keep Ba for when we want to switch to 4-4-2

Exactly. Ben Arfa was also very isolated out wide in the 4-4-2.

I don't think he has ever played there. He plays as a number 9 now and that's his best position, like shearer as you said above, or he can play behind the striker.

Since you have loaded up on the defense, I would go for the CS captaincy. All or nothing. The problem is, will Ramos get an assist or enough RBs in order not to be a worse captain than another defender, e.g. Jordi Alba?

    Thinking of fielding this team:

    Casillas
    Pique - Arbeloa - Alba - Barzagli
    Iniesta - Fabregas - Pirlo - Alonso - Busquets
    Balotelli

Balotelli seems like the only striker a) nailed on, and b) likely to score. I don't particularly want Silva or Torres. Figured I might as well stack up on Spanish mids since they're more likely to play, and one of them might score or assist...

It definitely makes sense looking at it especially Djokovic's arm as it connects right onto the elbow from the upper arm so that would indicate trying to avoid tennis elbow.

It was actually brilliant, looking around old castles and going to the zoo (redesigning elephant enclosure). The others in the office were doing drawings on AutoCAD which I did a bit as well. Not really my type of thing but a good experience all the same.

It was Srna's neck straps that gave it away to me. A winger playing full back has to head the ball a lot more, and so his neck muscles will be under a lot more stress than normal.

Finished my final team, since potentially unable to log in after the lineups are announced on Sunday.

Defending minileague lead with 3-3 split defense against runner-up with a wildcard.

    5 - 3 - 2
    Casillas
    Alba - Arbeloa - Barzagli - Bonucci - Abate
    Alonso - Pirlo - Busquets
    Silva - Balotelli

Subs (in case someone does not play):
    Diamanti #1, Negredo #2, 7.5 #3

    Captain: either Barzagli or Balotelli.

Abate unlikely to play, but I did not have enough money to upgrade to Balzaretti without taking a hit. That's due to me choosing Neuer over Casillas in the semis 8 FTs. Darn it.

If Abate doesn't play, Diamanti is likely to get 1 point. So from 1 to -3 = -4 difference. Balzaretti is likely to get 2 points for 90min + 1 for RBs, so expected transfer value -2 with only small to moderate chance of CS for +2. A risk not worth taking when defending the lead.
