Fulham have announced their first foray into the summer transfer market with the capture of Mladen Petric on a one-year deal. The striker arrives on a free transfer from SV Hamburg and is re-united with Cottagers boss Martin Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman for the Bundesliga outfit back in 2008/09.

Petric’s arrival goes some way to addressing the problems up front Fulham currently face. With Andy Johnson joining QPR earlier this month and Pavel Pogrebnyak set to seal a deal with Reading, Jol has been scouring the market to boost his forward dilemma as he looks to improve upon last term’s ninth place finish. Speaking yesterday after completion of the deal, Petric went on to reveal:

I like the Premier League and it has always been one of my wishes to come here. I’m very happy to be part of what is happening at Fulham. The club is doing very well and that was why I decided to come here. I know the manager well and I know that he is always looking to strengthen his attacking options and I hope that we can do even better next season.

The Statistics

Petric moved to Switzerland at an early age and started his professional career in the Swiss league with FC Baden in the summer of 1998. He lasted just a season there, scoring four times in 22 league appearances, before being snapped up by Grasshoppers Zurich as an 18-year-old. The Croatian spent five campaigns with Grasshoppers and began to find the net with greater regularity – over 114 appearances, he notched 30 times before moving within the Swiss league once again, to FC Basel. There, he stayed for three seasons, scoring 38 times in just 72 matches before a tally of 19 goals in the 2006-07 campaign saw Borussia Dortmund come calling.

Despite scoring 13 times in 29 league games in his debut Bundesliga season, Petric’s somewhat nomadic career continued, however, with Dortmund transferring him to Hamburg as part of a swap deal for Mohamed Zidan. Petric’s first campaign under Jol was his most successful at Hamburg in terms of goals, with a tally of 12, in addition to four assists, over 25 league games. The Croatian lasted four campaigns at the Imtech Arena, returning 38 goals and 15 assists in 99 matches before deciding to move to Craven Cottage under freedom of contract.

The Prospects

As mentioned above, the summer departures look set to hand Petric the chance of a regular first-team role at the Cottage for the upcoming season. Crucially, Jol’s previous experience with the Croatian should help – there’s less likely to be an uncomfortable settling-in period similar to the Bryan Ruiz situation last term, where the Costa Rican looked ill-at-ease to begin with.

Fulham’ free-scoring home form in their first season under Jol saw them rack up 36 goals at the Cottage – only three less than Arsenal and Spurs, for example, with the new manager masterminding 10 home wins. While Clint Dempsey hogged the headlines, both Bobby Zamora and Pogrebnyak played their parts with 11 goals and five assists in 26 starts between them over the season. Clearly, then, the potential is there for an established frontman to reap the benefits of a regular role up top for Fulham and Petric, at 6 foot 1, should fits seamlessly into Jol’s side as the target man, with the likes of Dempsey and Ruiz buzzing around him and adding to the attacking potential. The only possible downside is that Jol will surely still add to his frontline options before the end of August, though with Petric able to also play in “the hole” if required, plenty starts look likely.

In a sense, Dempsey’s price tag could be crucial to Petric’s appeal – the American’s exploits last time round could well see his value leap as high as 10.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, while there seems little doubt he will prosper again, his cost may deter many suitors as we look for a better balance within our squads. Such a situation may well promote Petric in our thinking, then; a modest price in the region of 6.5 to 7.0 looks likely and, given his previous under Jol in addition to his free-kick ability, he could well be one to watch if the Cottagers replicate their attacking menace over the course of the campaign ahead.

read an article suggesting Spain's front three should be Iniesta - Torres - Cesc since Silva has tailed off recently...i think it could work nicely. Cesc is surely more fresh and hungry than Silva is at the moment. It's at least worth a start and bring in Silva / Pedro / Navas if things go South.

I think Torres should play. But Iniesta and Silva have started every game so can't see them changing this. They also looked better when Torres came on against Italy so this could persuade them to use him from the start (even though he missed two sitters).

They need to have either Torres or Llorente on, otherwise they have no bite. Torres is the obvious front runner but Llorente deserves some time. Would actually love to see both of them on at the same time.

Afternoon all. Guessing it’s quiet without the football, and team news on Sunday means no need to ask ‘Will X be playing’! Got to be a Spanish defender as captain, quintuple up on their defence 😉

Is anybody good with consumer advice? This is the problem:

Lil' Wiz, I can't help personally but I can suggest trying the Beeb's Moneybox website. Editor Paul Lewis is quite the consumer champ and if you can find an email address, you may get some advice there.

Alternatively, search the Which organisation, another consumer champ organisation.

Thank you :). I will give this a try. It's such a ridiculous situation, and surely illegal as the contract was made when the person was 17.

I also notice your FPL id last season was 2012. Good effort!

You need to formally lodge a complaint with Three. If that doesn't help (sounds like it won't) then after 8 weeks you can ask an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) scheme to consider the case for free.

One of the ADR organisations is part of the Ombudsman service - http://www.ombudsman-services.org/communications.html - who have a statutory duty to investiagte a complaint, listen to both sides of the argument and decide if any action should be taken.

If the Ombudsman say your friend has been mistreated and doesn't owe the money, then Three will want nothing more to do with her and will definitely pay her back. She may even get some cursory compensation for the inconveinence caused...worth a shot, the worst that can happen is that you're stuck back where you started.

Also ignore the 'can't contract with a 17 year old' bit...it's a questionable legal statement and not worth arguing over.

Although they should pay her back because it's not her contract, I would've thought it's a key issue (she has proof that she as 17 when it was taken out, plus has passport/I.D. etc), and would invalidate any contract and hence mean the money should be paid back as it wasn't a legal contract?

Thanks though, I have told her to make an official complain, and I will save the link. 🙂

yea, we had two "divisions" of 10 teams apiece and i thoroughly enjoyed it. the key was to draft well, but also keep an eye out for pouncing on players who weren't drafted, who come good once the season starts.

To the Newcastle fans out there. If the Douglas move is made, surely the back four will be:

    Simpson -- Collocini -- Douglas -- Santon

Where do they Taylors fit in? Or would S.Taylor take Collocini's place and Ryan play OOP?

Colo captain and first choice, douglas vs S Taylor for the other spot but will need a squad with europa league this year.

R Taylor will be a fringe, utility player - don't expect many starts there next season in the PL.

You can replace Simpson with Debuchy too hopefully 🙂

Gylfi is really a direct replacement, not the way he played for Swans, more a VDV challenger. But that's not to say he won't be used deeper in future.

Chelsea would love Moddy, but Levy ain't selling to The Bridge. As for his worth, free market economics say he's worth as much as someone (thing) is willing to pay. I suspect he'll be off to Real for £35m or so, possibly with AN Other player coming the other way.

I think Modric is a class act but there are a number of players just as capable as him that would be bought for a lot less. 35 million is too much for him. Also, all these managers are capable of making stupid transfers.

I think a system where different games award a different number of bonus points isn't a good one. It might be okay if two players are outstanding, but with this system you can get equally bad players getting extra points because the PPI says they were equal. I saw a game last season where four players were awarded 3 baps each!

And then of course the system was hugely flawed in that goals were unfairly weighted, and goalkeepers couldn't get any if they tried. It was as if shots on target that were saved were given more PPI points for the striker than the goalkeeper!

It's in need of tweaking definitely but lets not forget this was the first year using that system. It needs time to iron out all the mistake but is a much better system than having one person look at the match and give points based on their opinions. I was a lot more frustrated in previous seasons with the BPs than I was this season.

I suppose in previous seasons Fabregas and Essien were hoovering them up 😆 and of course I have a love of stats so I do like the idea of a statistical-based system. I just hope it does get tweaked, and I don't like the idea of the games with 12+ baps.

Murray has and will probably always have mental block when it comes to winning a major. Winning is a habit and he hasn't picked that up. Doubt he ever will. Technically a very good player but not mentally strong enough to take on the big boys when it counts.

I hear this 'mental block' stuff too much with regards to tennis, football etc. It's so hard when the top 3 are that good. I know winning tournaments tends to go in cycles, but as soon as he wins one, he'll win more. Fingers crossed. For now, he's Scottish.

I'm Scottish. He used to play Tennis in my neighbourhood. I like watching him as he is a pretty well rounded player. Mental block is something Murray would probably be quick to rubbish but these big games are massive and it's how you manage the pressure, anxiety and keep the concentration levels up. I agree that he is in a generation of arguably the best group of players in Nadal, Djokovic and Federer but he has shown he can more than match them in the Masters tournaments when the stakes are not as high yet in the majors when it's all or nothing he doesn't seem to look inferior. That is definitely a mental weakness not a physical one.

I like Andy, I dislike the English obsession with him but I do like Andy as player. Unfortunately I have watched his game and, compared to the likes of Djokovic etc. his technique is weaker. I agree a bit of a mental block there but I'd actually blame the English for putting so much pressure on the lad. Did the same with Henman (who, lets face it, was never strong enough)

I don't get the media's obsession with reporting travel 'chaos' as they call it. Tough titty if you are one of the unfortunate ones stuck in queues or face long delays. You just have to deal with it. But if it doesn't affect you in the slightest why do you need to made aware of it. It's garbage news reporting and really uninteresting.

I think by the time the news is reporting the story you're probably already committed to your mode of transport. Don't know anyone who sits about for the news to determine if they will take the car or use public transport ahead of a journey.

I love to see other people's non-life threatening misery, but that's just me 😉

Haha non-life threatening misery. That's brilliant. Yeah it is quite funny. A Nelson from the Simpsons 'Haha' is usually enough.

But this is how a lot of people feel about most things - I know it's ignorance on their part but some people just don't care about Syria, the Eurozone etc. They care more about what's on tv or getting drunk. Sometimes this kind of news is better as at least it's less depressing than riots and murders.

What are people's feelings on taking hits to get 11 out?

I've got 3 Spainards + Negredo and 2 Italians (but one is Abate).

+4 transfers gives me 9 players + Negredo

It's only a 3 point hit so should I just fill up the team. It will probably be a close game so defenders should have no trouble making it worthwhile.

I'd go for one. I can have 12 final players, so I'll see if Abate starts or I can get rid of him for free.

I have 9 + Negredo, and will take a 3 point hit to get in another Spanish midfielder. Got a lot of money spare because of Ozil and Ronaldo, and it's a risk worth taking. Should be minimum 2 points.

Fill her up. You'll likely get 2pts per player anyway and they may score and get RBs.
