Fulham have announced their first foray into the summer transfer market with the capture of Mladen Petric on a one-year deal. The striker arrives on a free transfer from SV Hamburg and is re-united with Cottagers boss Martin Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman for the Bundesliga outfit back in 2008/09.

Petric’s arrival goes some way to addressing the problems up front Fulham currently face. With Andy Johnson joining QPR earlier this month and Pavel Pogrebnyak set to seal a deal with Reading, Jol has been scouring the market to boost his forward dilemma as he looks to improve upon last term’s ninth place finish. Speaking yesterday after completion of the deal, Petric went on to reveal:

I like the Premier League and it has always been one of my wishes to come here. I’m very happy to be part of what is happening at Fulham. The club is doing very well and that was why I decided to come here. I know the manager well and I know that he is always looking to strengthen his attacking options and I hope that we can do even better next season.

The Statistics

Petric moved to Switzerland at an early age and started his professional career in the Swiss league with FC Baden in the summer of 1998. He lasted just a season there, scoring four times in 22 league appearances, before being snapped up by Grasshoppers Zurich as an 18-year-old. The Croatian spent five campaigns with Grasshoppers and began to find the net with greater regularity – over 114 appearances, he notched 30 times before moving within the Swiss league once again, to FC Basel. There, he stayed for three seasons, scoring 38 times in just 72 matches before a tally of 19 goals in the 2006-07 campaign saw Borussia Dortmund come calling.

Despite scoring 13 times in 29 league games in his debut Bundesliga season, Petric’s somewhat nomadic career continued, however, with Dortmund transferring him to Hamburg as part of a swap deal for Mohamed Zidan. Petric’s first campaign under Jol was his most successful at Hamburg in terms of goals, with a tally of 12, in addition to four assists, over 25 league games. The Croatian lasted four campaigns at the Imtech Arena, returning 38 goals and 15 assists in 99 matches before deciding to move to Craven Cottage under freedom of contract.

The Prospects

As mentioned above, the summer departures look set to hand Petric the chance of a regular first-team role at the Cottage for the upcoming season. Crucially, Jol’s previous experience with the Croatian should help – there’s less likely to be an uncomfortable settling-in period similar to the Bryan Ruiz situation last term, where the Costa Rican looked ill-at-ease to begin with.

Fulham’ free-scoring home form in their first season under Jol saw them rack up 36 goals at the Cottage – only three less than Arsenal and Spurs, for example, with the new manager masterminding 10 home wins. While Clint Dempsey hogged the headlines, both Bobby Zamora and Pogrebnyak played their parts with 11 goals and five assists in 26 starts between them over the season. Clearly, then, the potential is there for an established frontman to reap the benefits of a regular role up top for Fulham and Petric, at 6 foot 1, should fits seamlessly into Jol’s side as the target man, with the likes of Dempsey and Ruiz buzzing around him and adding to the attacking potential. The only possible downside is that Jol will surely still add to his frontline options before the end of August, though with Petric able to also play in “the hole” if required, plenty starts look likely.

In a sense, Dempsey’s price tag could be crucial to Petric’s appeal – the American’s exploits last time round could well see his value leap as high as 10.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, while there seems little doubt he will prosper again, his cost may deter many suitors as we look for a better balance within our squads. Such a situation may well promote Petric in our thinking, then; a modest price in the region of 6.5 to 7.0 looks likely and, given his previous under Jol in addition to his free-kick ability, he could well be one to watch if the Cottagers replicate their attacking menace over the course of the campaign ahead.

Anyone wanna start compiling a Starting XIs document for the 12-13 PL season? Post the likely XIs, and I'll put em together in an Google Doc or somethin...I'll start with Arsenal:

    Ches
    Sagna / Kos / Verm / Gibbs
    Arteta / Song / Wilshere
    Walcott / RvP / Podolski

Obviously, the document will be tweaked once transfers happen, but this will get it started...

No he didn't he was used as an impact sub mainly. guly played there and so did chaplow but none of the 3 r good enough for the prem. I'm not saying the rest r but trust me I missed 5games last season and we will buy a starting right mid for sure.

De ridder is the least likely of the 3 we currently have to start there as well especially away at city.

Order of Extreme Valour – FFS Euro 2012 – Matchday 5 Award

(Note: This is the report for the FFS Euro 2012 award only; there is a separate report for the FFS Friendly World Cup!)

One thing we've noticed getting into the semi-finals are that differentials are much harder to come by. One reason is that most of the unfancied teams are out. The other is simple maths - there are fewer players to choose from and people end up piling up on virtually every player who displays any potential. Given that a certain Mario scored two of only three goals this Matchday, he would seem the obvious source of an award. Unfortunately, no less than 7 managers selected him, far beyond the long-standing limit of 3 managers to be considered a differential and also giving the carpenters serious issues in building a podium for all the winners. So we had a low-scoring round, but one still charged with valour.

I judged the award by the rules posted here. http://uefaffs.weebly.com/7/post/2012/06/the-order-of-extreme-valour.html

    To recap:
A “successful gamble” is defined as a single player choice that returns an unexpectedly high number of points. The awards will be given on these criteria:
    - Underappreciation
    - Overachievement
    - Underdog team
    - Captaincy

    So first, the honourable mentions.

    - Doosra for being the only person to pick Buffon (4 points). Considering most were expecting the game to be full of goals, he did well to get two save points and almost a clean sheet save for a last-gasp penalty. A penalty that seemed like the fantasy gods dropping a little sympathy from the skies for Ozil owners...
    - Pratik and Roscola for picking Cassano (4 points). Cassano got an assist in Italy's shock win over Germany, and his points will also have come a shock to most.
    - ENR and China Mag for going with Bruno Alves (6 points). To pick a Portuguese defender against the might of Spain was valorous - especially as the Spanish defence was known for its clean sheets, implying Portugal would have to hold out for 120 minutes - which they did.
    - China Mag and Drinky for their faith in Coentrao (7 points). Picking up an extra bonus point, Coentrao was even pricier and could easily have been swapped for a defender from the big two.

    And now for the winner:

    - Gaz Downright for captaining Bruno Alves (C) (6 x 2 points). To back a Portuguese clean sheet was one thing, to captain him when he also had Nani, Ronaldo and a Spanish defender playing was truly remarkable.

Congratulations to Gaz and everyone involved for giving us another enjoyable award. Alas, folks, we find ourselves facing the last Matchday of the competition, and that means the last award. As I am writing the final award for the Friendly World Cup, this is my final report for the Euro Cup and I'd like to thank you all for the memories. *throws bouquet*

Looking forward to the final, with only one match to choose from, differentials will be in short supply. But I have faith in you. Faith in you to surprise us and delight us the same way Balotelli did last night. (Unless you're German, or had Hummels and Badstuber like me, in which case, well...)

Stay tuned for our Day 1 Report and preview of Day 2!

Ok, I would love to see Jordi Alba signed, Kyle Walker is a necessity as we have no good/proper right back.

                Could fall on Leighton Baines

Of course we would all love to see Modric signed plus more (James Rodriguez, Robert Lewandowski, Iker Muniain etc) but they're not desperately needed

Totally agree mate, but with Song and M'vila both playing centre mid, it becomes hard to find a place for Wilshere, who i think is absolute class. That's why I feel Song alone as a def mid is more than enough.
