Fulham have announced their first foray into the summer transfer market with the capture of Mladen Petric on a one-year deal. The striker arrives on a free transfer from SV Hamburg and is re-united with Cottagers boss Martin Jol, having previously worked under the Dutchman for the Bundesliga outfit back in 2008/09.

Petric’s arrival goes some way to addressing the problems up front Fulham currently face. With Andy Johnson joining QPR earlier this month and Pavel Pogrebnyak set to seal a deal with Reading, Jol has been scouring the market to boost his forward dilemma as he looks to improve upon last term’s ninth place finish. Speaking yesterday after completion of the deal, Petric went on to reveal:

I like the Premier League and it has always been one of my wishes to come here. I’m very happy to be part of what is happening at Fulham. The club is doing very well and that was why I decided to come here. I know the manager well and I know that he is always looking to strengthen his attacking options and I hope that we can do even better next season.

The Statistics

Petric moved to Switzerland at an early age and started his professional career in the Swiss league with FC Baden in the summer of 1998. He lasted just a season there, scoring four times in 22 league appearances, before being snapped up by Grasshoppers Zurich as an 18-year-old. The Croatian spent five campaigns with Grasshoppers and began to find the net with greater regularity – over 114 appearances, he notched 30 times before moving within the Swiss league once again, to FC Basel. There, he stayed for three seasons, scoring 38 times in just 72 matches before a tally of 19 goals in the 2006-07 campaign saw Borussia Dortmund come calling.

Despite scoring 13 times in 29 league games in his debut Bundesliga season, Petric’s somewhat nomadic career continued, however, with Dortmund transferring him to Hamburg as part of a swap deal for Mohamed Zidan. Petric’s first campaign under Jol was his most successful at Hamburg in terms of goals, with a tally of 12, in addition to four assists, over 25 league games. The Croatian lasted four campaigns at the Imtech Arena, returning 38 goals and 15 assists in 99 matches before deciding to move to Craven Cottage under freedom of contract.

The Prospects

As mentioned above, the summer departures look set to hand Petric the chance of a regular first-team role at the Cottage for the upcoming season. Crucially, Jol’s previous experience with the Croatian should help – there’s less likely to be an uncomfortable settling-in period similar to the Bryan Ruiz situation last term, where the Costa Rican looked ill-at-ease to begin with.

Fulham’ free-scoring home form in their first season under Jol saw them rack up 36 goals at the Cottage – only three less than Arsenal and Spurs, for example, with the new manager masterminding 10 home wins. While Clint Dempsey hogged the headlines, both Bobby Zamora and Pogrebnyak played their parts with 11 goals and five assists in 26 starts between them over the season. Clearly, then, the potential is there for an established frontman to reap the benefits of a regular role up top for Fulham and Petric, at 6 foot 1, should fits seamlessly into Jol’s side as the target man, with the likes of Dempsey and Ruiz buzzing around him and adding to the attacking potential. The only possible downside is that Jol will surely still add to his frontline options before the end of August, though with Petric able to also play in “the hole” if required, plenty starts look likely.

In a sense, Dempsey’s price tag could be crucial to Petric’s appeal – the American’s exploits last time round could well see his value leap as high as 10.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, while there seems little doubt he will prosper again, his cost may deter many suitors as we look for a better balance within our squads. Such a situation may well promote Petric in our thinking, then; a modest price in the region of 6.5 to 7.0 looks likely and, given his previous under Jol in addition to his free-kick ability, he could well be one to watch if the Cottagers replicate their attacking menace over the course of the campaign ahead.

Agreed. It's a real shame because, under Moyes, they have performed brilliantly, much like Villa did with MON. If Moyes goes, so will Everton.

True. Do you see him playing out wide right with Kuyt gone, with Hendo/Lucas middle? Not sure where he fits honestly given potential fitness issues looming he cant play in the hole 38+ games a season.

Have to say I was very disappointed when the Siggy > Spurs reports came out. Felt with that as 'Pool's first summer signing we would finally be moving forward.

Siggy will still be joining Pool imo and according to Dunk; the guy who knows the ins and outs of the club.

Think we'll shape up 4-3-3 under Rodgers.

Interesting, I like the shifted role for Suarez and results in starting eleven which doesn't involved flogging Carroll or resigning him to bench duty.

I surprised how appealing I find that team given our finish this season given only a single new signing would be required. (Bringing Hendo through in his true position to replace S.G) Guess it shows the impact of losing Lucas mid-season, his inclusion changes the whole dynamic of the team.

    Alreet lads

I'm a bit disappointed about Danny Guthrie leaving. He was very good for us a first change centre mid. Respect to the lad though. We offered him a new contract, and I guess that reading wouldn't pay much more than us. Must have gone for the first team footy. Means we will have to buy a back-up centre mid now. Could affect the budget for other signings.

Assuming Negredo won't start, I have to take a 12 pt. hit just to field XI. Is it worth it or should I save a hit and go with a 10 man team? How many hits are you guys taking?

I'm working on the assumption that most players brought in will get 2pts so each 3pt hit is really only a 1pt hit, and will probably gor for a playing 11. Decent chance of recovered balls from mids and defenders, so will concentrate my squad in that direction with probably just one up front.

I keep swinging back and forth from going Spain heavy to Italy heavy - I don't see it as a high scoring game, but getting it right could make a big difference.

got to say its the ideal team with you clearly supporting Spain..
and not surprisingly the 2 in form Italians are also there... Pirlo for sure and Mario too...

          Defence is good..
Midfield i think you should go with the safer option of Alonso.
and Forwards I am still not sure about who will start... Torres or silva...
make sure who starts and put him with Mario.. that would be better.. would love to have this team for me too...but cash and free transfer don't look like they are unlimited anymore...

Thanks. I will make the final changes once the lineups are out. I was going to make Ramos my captain since this Spanish clean sheet trend seems to going around. I am aware of the fact that they did concede to Italy the first match, but I'm just going to consider that Spain being rusty for now lol. Unless you have anyone else in mind worth captaining.

I'm currently behind by 20 pts in my league. The leader used up his wildcard during matchday 2 and his team as of now is Alba, Busquets, Iniesta, and Pirlo + his 4 free transfers.

Nope. I saved my wildcard since I didn't know how to use it. I wasn't aware that the option only came up when you exhaust all of your allocated free transfers. Thus, I'm using it to get over a 20 point deficit. Hope it all works out.

Thanks Reno. That sounds logical and might be the way to bet. The leader might keep his 1 Italian DF or have more. That might be my chance (if Spain keep CS).

Btw, Italy seem to have luck.. I'm really afraid that they could win this tournament though.

I'm not feeling a CS in the final; Balotelli is on fire. Spain have a strong defence, but in the absence of a true forward, I am not convinced they will get more than 2. I would love Italy to win, but my mind tells me it will be a long grind for Spain to take it 2-1:

This is the team so far, normal caveats on Fabs or Torres once lineup is released:

        Cassilas
        Barzagli / Alba
        Marchisio / Pirlo / Iniesta / Busquests / Alonso
        Silva / Torres / Balotelli

        4 point lead in ML.
I can only field 9 players (6 Spanish, 3 Italian players)
        Rival can field 10 players

Take a hit to bring in another player?

Absolutely. Here why. You take a 3 point hit right, but immediately get a 2 pt refund if he plays and avoids yellow etc. So depending on your personal view of CS or goal fest, you take on 2 new players for just a 2 pt hit. Choose well and one could net you double figure returns.

This is where you need to be in it to win it. Don't roll over now.... =D

It should worth it. You're only losing 2 points if you go with a 6-point hit. It is worth to take a point hit when a player of yours is not playing than a player who is playing. The difference is you only lose two points in the first scenario. In the second scenario where you have a player who is playing and you want to take a point hit and sell him for other players, there is like about 4-point margin in between that you lose, which is not worth.

I'm really torn on who to back, but backing one side heavily seems the best option - I'll probably go 3-8 one way or t'other

Pratik, I've been out for a bit and saw you expressed surprise at my all in Italy strategy. In truth, there is nothing genius about it, i'm just at a very 'meh' standing of around 20,000 in the world and have ZERO players for the final. So I will have to take 7 hits to field 11 players. If I do that for spanish players that everyone will have anyway without a hit, I will get 3 points per player less than everyone else if spain do well, so there is only one way for me to go. If on the other hand I gamble on Italy, and they win to 0, I have a chance of making the top 10,000. I'm top of my mini league, but I don't really care about that as I have no competition.

0 players for the final? so you gambled all on germany and portugal? ouch! yeahh i guess that strategy makes sense. though i might suggest only going for 8 or 9 or 10 players who you think will score more and take a few less hits

        Morning everyone!

Took a break for a day or so to get over the hurt of losing to IT by one point due to me not being around before KO and having to take the risk on subbing Abate in for Negredo.

Anyway, just about over it, now looking to take you down Forca to finish third! πŸ™‚
