FPL Gameweek 15 round-up: Sunday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Sunday’s Gameweek 15 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes throughout December.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, PROJECTED BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Antonio Conte did not have Emerson Royal (£4.9m) or Bryan Gil (£5.7m) available in Gameweek 15 due to illness, and also lost Sergio Reguilon (£5.3m) to injury just 22 minutes into the game. However, the Italian’s post-match comments, plus the words of Reguilon himself, confirmed it isn’t anything serious.

“… I was a bit disappointed for Serge (Reguilon) with the injury but I spoke with him and we don’t think it’s a bad injury.”

Liam Cooper (£4.5m) and Kalvin Phillips (£4.8m) were both forced off with leg injuries against Brentford, with Marcelo Bielsa saying it was too early to say how serious they were in the immediate aftermath. However, in better news, Luke Ayling (£4.3m) and Patrick Bamford (£7.7m) returned to the starting XI and bench respectively, and combined for Leeds United’s last gasp equaliser.

As for Brentford, Thomas Frank revealed that Ivan Toney (£6.7m) has tested positive for Covid-19, and as a result, missed today’s clash. The forward, currently owned by 22.1% of FPL managers, is also set to sit out Friday’s match against Watford in Gameweek 16, and possibly against Manchester United next Tuesday, too.

Elsewhere, Anthony Martial (£7.6m) and Jesse Lingard (£6.8m) were both absent from Ralf Rangnick’s matchday squad, which the German tactician touched on prior to kick-off:

“Jesse and Anthony indicated after yesterday’s training that they didn’t feel well. They felt pain, this is the reason why they are not in the squad.”

On the suspension front, Sergi Canos (£5.5m) picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign, and as a result, will miss Gameweek 16.

Meanwhile, Raphinha (£6.7m), Tyler Roberts (£5.8m) and Scott McTominay (£5.4m) were also cautioned, and are now just one booking away from one-match bans.

GAMEWEEK 15 TAKEAWAYS

UNITED UNDER RANGNICK – FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Ralf Rangnick’s reign at Manchester United got off to a winning start with victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday. Despite limited time on the training pitch, there were visible signs of improvement from the outset, as they lined up in a 4-2-2-2 formation, with Marcus Rashford (£9.4m) partnering Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.3m) up front.

Manchester United’s average position map v Crystal Palace in Gameweek 15

There was, as expected, a greater emphasis on pressing in the final-third, with the full-backs given plenty of license to get forward and provide the width. In fact, Alex Telles‘ (£5.0m) 66 touches in the opponent’s half was more than any other player on the pitch, while Diogo Dalot (£4.4m) kept his place ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.2m), which is one to monitor moving forward.

Notably, this was United’s first Old Trafford clean sheet since back in April, having conceded in 15 consecutive home matches prior to today, which does suggest we could find some value in their backline over the festive period.

They did lose a bit of momentum towards the end, but all in all, this was an encouraging start to the Rangnick era.

“For me, it was logical not to change too many positions or too many things after the win against Arsenal. Everyone was fully fit, nobody was injured, fully recovered, I started to play the same starting XI.

The question was how do we get pressure on the ball, how do we get control? So, I decided to play 4-2-2-2 with two strikers, not Cristiano alone up front, together with Marcus, using pace for vertical balls.

And, at the same time, with Jadon and Bruno on the two 10 positions, for the rest [of the players] it was the same. We had enough space with Bruno and Jadon in those 10 positions for our full-backs to play forward and ask for the ball on the wing. So, they almost played like wing-backs. Especially in the first-half, Alex and Diogo, did extremely well offensively and that’s why I played 4-2-2-2. I’m a big fan of every player plays in his best possible position.

The most challenging, demanding positions in that formation are the two 10s but I still think, especially when Palace was in possession, Bruno and Jadon did well. It was a little bit new but not that new, it doesn’t make that much difference if Jadon plays a little further inside or outside but defensively they both did well. – Ralf Rangnick

BAMFORD ON THE WATCHLIST

Patrick Bamford (£7.7m) marked his return from injury by snatching his team a point in the fifth minute of added time against Brentford on Sunday, as Leeds United moved up to 14th in the table. The England forward came on after 68 minutes, and could perhaps become an option for our frontlines once the Whites fixtures ease after Christmas.

Elsewhere, Raphinha (£6.7m) delivered another assist, his fourth attacking return in his last five starts, though with Chelsea (a), Manchester City (a), Arsenal (h) and Liverpool (a) up next, he has already been sold by over 70,000 managers since yesterday’s deadline.

DIFFERENTIALS DELIVER AS SPURS MAINTAIN UNBEATEN LEAGUE START UNDER CONTE

Differentials Ben Davies (£4.4m), Davinson Sanchez (£4.5m) and Lucas Moura (£6.4m), plus Son Heung-min (£10.4m), all bagged double-digit returns on Sunday, as Tottenham Hotspur moved up to fifth in the table and remain unbeaten under Antonio Conte.

As for Davies, the budget defender is offering excellent value right now, averaging over seven points per match under the Italian, where he has featured as a left-sided centre-back.

“Ben is playing very well and I think that that role specifically, I can get out the best of him. And it happens the same with (Cesar) Azpilicueta and I think the three central defenders, it’s important to be good defensively. But at the same time, for me it’s important to play football, have personality and play the ball.

Also, when you find a team that’s defending very low, it’s very important in this system. I need players with personality to play the ball and also to be offensive.

Ben is one of these players, he shows great solidity and plays well defensively. I’m happy for him. We are talking about a really good person, a good guy. He’s always really focussed and concentrated. He played well.” – Antonio Conte on Ben Davies

VILLA ON THE UP

Following today’s 2-1 win over Leicester City, it’s now three wins in four for Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa. The victory lifts them into the top half of the table, and with a nice run of fixtures from Gameweek 17 onwards, they could offer FPL managers plenty of value.

At the back, Ezri Konsa (£4.9m) netted his first and second goals of the campaign on Sunday, though it is Matty Cash (£5.0m) who has really caught the eye in the final-third, with his 12 penalty box touches only bettered by Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.3m) amongst all defenders since Gerrard’s appointment.

Aston Villa’s fixtures ease from Gameweek 17, with appealing matches against Norwich City, Burnley, Leeds United and Brentford before the January break

Reply to TM from last page.

I don’t find Ronaldo price particularly problematic. We usually own at least two high-priced players and rotate captaincy. This year it is largely captain Salah every week. But that doesn’t mean most can’t afford a second premium. Especially with so many mids from 6-8 delivering the goods (and attacking defenders doing the same).

I don’t have incredibly high hopes for Ronaldo, but I can’t look past him with those fixtures. And even if he just scores a few, it will be better than I have done with my strikers (except early Antonio and recent Dennis).

I get that can depend on team value. And maybe funds better spent on someone like Son. But funds aren’t necessarily a problem for lots.

For me having Ronaldo means a bench of Livra, Brownhill & 4.4m fwd and not enough flexibility for transfers. Like I can just about afford Bilva & Bowen.

Without Ronaldo though I can have a 8th attacker and also money in the bank for flexibility. Can afford Foden over Bilva which I think could be a big difference.

It's a tough decision though. Not having Ronaldo for those run of fixtures is scary and I get the value part of not capping him but if he starts getting

Lot depends on your team really. If you got Kane then easy switch to Ron. However us Son owners got to keep as he's in form and got good fixtures ahead

Look at fixtures again, i tebd to not see that as particularly good. Brighton never concedes much, always tight, Leicester is not good defensively so good, Liverpool are bad fixture, then 4 fixture which are decent but tricky as you dont know what you get from those teams. Spurs played Brentford and Norwich, now other teams play them.

This. Two premiums don’t affect the rest of your team that much.

That said, in my case, I can’t afford all of Ronaldo, Jota, Silva, and Foden. I can only afford 3 of them.

I missed easy kane to ron transfer by 0.1 due to slightly unexpected kane drop tonight (he was close but still expected another night to think the move over), it may be a blessing in disguise, or a curse, only time will tell - will ron really play every game over the next few weeks of congested gameweeks, or more importantly will he annihilate me by scoring tonnes of fpl points? he hasn't particularly frightened me when not owning him so far, but maybe with these nice fixtures and new manager he will punish me, rival in ML has him, i may end up having to get him somehow....decisions, decisions...

I don’t expect huge things. I just want something! Anything! Barring a barren spell akin to Kane’s season (England games against the equivalent of mediocre pickup teams aside), I am in for the ride. My season is going okay, but not great. My best hope is catching a high-priced flyer that isn’t easy to move to or causes people to bust up their performing mids to afford. I ditched Kane (joke is on me for those glorious three games). Ronaldo is still scoring some goals. And some is okay with me.

true, and i probably should have just made the move without risking getting priced out, kane to ronaldo was the logical move for me, had kane for about 5 or six weeks without a single return, but rest of team has done quite well, now tony is ruled out i may take a hit to move him on, which would give me the funds to still get ronaldo after tonight's price changes - i'm well ahead in my main ML but rival is catching slowly every week and has ronaldo, i should probably cover that major threat...

Son is hurting me in my mini league. I'm tempted by the below for a -8, but probably will just do the 1st move for free this week and then the other two next week for -4.

Not necessarily a problem as I would be playing 5 mids every week if I signed Son and either 3 or 4 at the back. I still like Antonio although I know he is justifiably out of fashion at the moment. Or Watkins, just as a pretty secure starter

Which is the better team long term?

    A)
    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo James Alonso Livra
    Salah Jota Foden Bowen Gallagher
    Antonio King Toney

Money in the bank to upgrade Gallagher to Bilva or downgrade Toney to 4.5 and upgrade Gallagher to Son.
Can also upgrade Sanchez to Ramsdale/DDG.

    B)
    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo James Alonso Livra
    Salah Jota Bilva Bowen Brownhill

    Sanchez foster *
    Taa cancelo Livra Williams Regullion
    Salah jota Gundogan Raphinha sarr*
    Kane Toney pukki

    2 FTs,0.1m ITB.
    gw16:-Kane +sarr + Livra—->King + Bowen + james(-4)
    Gw17:-Raphinha—>Foden(FT)
    Issue is Toney now.
Do I do Toney to Watkins for -4?

If I had Raph I’d want to keep but like you I’m trying to get Foden in. Posts above mention Watkins who I reckon is a good option looking at fixtures.
      Defo get James imo

    A)Toney to Watkins -4 in gw17
    Rashford/Sancho by gw18 using FT
B)Toney to Watkins in gw18 using FT
    rashford/Sancho in gw19 using FT
I’m chasing in my mini league atm so I don’t mind taking a -4.

I may be a player short for next gw with Toney, Williams and Ait Nouri doubts to play, best move here:
    a. Ait Nouri to Davies/Dalot/Lowton (which?)
    b. Toney to King (double up with Dennis)

Welcome dead zone. Another summarized opinion of games I have the chance to watch in South Africa:

West Ham 3 Chelsea 2: Another poor defensive performance from Chelsea gifting Hammers the points. They grew into the game with Bowen getting points he has often promised in past seasons. Rjames played well on the day but spent more time defending than attacking. Alonso was ineffective and hurt his back; Havertz injury subbed at half time to bring in Lukaku who looked off the pace; A mistake ridden game. I think Chelsea have serious issues in midfield. Kovacic looked really tired towards the end. MOTM: Bowen.

Wolves 0 Pool 1: The first half was fairly limited in action. Wolves did well to contain Pool: 3 good chances by Pool (Jota missed his normal sitter) but definitely not a Pool walk in the park. One can see why Wolves are not letting in goals. In the second half Jota excelled himself with his next sitter. (Miss of the season); Pool left themselves more and more open. It transpired into who could miss the easiest chances. Ait Nouri did a good marking job on an out of sorts Salah. After Nouri goes off a minute later Salah created the chance Pool needed; Origi does what he does; Heartbreaking for Wolves. MOTM: Ait Nouri.

Newcastle 1 Burnley 0: At last a Geordie win; Wilson a complete striker and becoming a rare breed. Schar can’t defend but there is fantasy value maybe. Opening 20 minutes Newcastle were crxp and a little panicky towards the end. Losing Cornet to injury was bad news for Burnley. ASM ran down blind alleys. Almiron had lots of shots, albeit off target. MOTM: Wilson.

Soton 1 Brighton 1: Enigmatic Maupay does it again! A farcical offside setup that went horribly wrong; how did Soton not get a win? Soton dominated the game and McCarthy must hold his hands up; playing while injured was madness and a goal due to it (JWP stopped a farcical offside). Who gets the keeper shirt now? Broja must keep his place now; outstanding with a classy goal to boot. Why does an effective Redmond not get the points he should? I only got to see the highlights to be fair: MOTM: Broja/Redmond.

Watford 0 Citeh 2: Probably the best 1st half of football I have seen this year. The Citeh side were sublime. It was hard to work out who was playing where. The opening 45 minutes shows me they are the best in the world if they want to be. Grealish should have had a hat trick in the first 20 minutes (Hopefully they move Foden to false 9). Citeh eased off second half apart from Bilva; he is special this season. Danny Rose was chronic: Hard to judge Watford; the difference in class was huge but they did show attacking intent; Dennis is no flash in the pan IMO; take the rotation and have 3 Citeh IMO. MOTM: Bilva.

ManU 0 Palace 0: Rangnick has arrived! A long time since I have seen the pressing energy from United; Fred actually looks a player like in his national side; Lindelof looking comfortable too. Are they fit enough for the second half? 0 0 at half time was the only United negative. The next 45 evened out somewhat. Better sides could take advantage of the unrefined press. Fred definitely suits this style. The full backs were a big improvement too. Palace could have got something from the game TBF. MOTM: Fred

Leeds 2 Brentford 2: Welcome back Bamford. Raphina will start getting more points now maybe. 2 sides struggling and it showed IMO.
Toney with Covid can hurt too. The one match I did not see apart from the limited highlights. MOTM: Raphina maybe.

Spurs 3 Norwich 0: The manager bounce is over. A great first goal started and finished by Moura; Reguilon a 0 point injury nightmare. Don’t get carried away Spurs, Norwich missed a series of good chances so there is some improvement still needed at Spurs; Son back in the points with a goal and assist; the goal being very like Son. MOTM: Son just over Moura.

Villa 2 Foxes 1: A very open game with Villa stepping up a gear second half; Vardy benched and no Nacho being a surprise. A nice game to watch apart from Soyuncu having another nightmare; Madison does have his mojo back and Young on a new lease of life; Luiz and Ramsey making a difference in midfield. Schmeichel stopped a few from Watkins who was lively. By the 70th minute Villa could have been 4 1 up. A good game not suited to fantasy managers. Brilliant late save from Martinez capped it. MOTM: A host of Villa players and Evans. Maybe the game of the weekend.

Once again, excuse spelling, grammar and mistakes

An FT fore sure. He is a bright spark in a side that works for him. One of the better alternative in a barren forward market.

      Good post.

Leeds 2 Brentford 2. Tyler Roberts had another good game. BRE on top for first 20 mins then Leeds on top till half time. Leeds disrupted by injuries to Cooper (15mins) and Phillips in early second half. BRE were by far the better team in second half although their first goal came out of nowhere. Meslier had few saves to make in the game. Some good balls in to the box from Raphinha. Roberts capitalised on one for the first goal.
Bamford came on with 24mins to go. Fortunate to score from a last minute corner but he was in the right place at the right time.
      MOTM: Tyler Roberts.

The big question. It seems Ron or no Ron. My personal view is his price and rotation risk in double gameweeks. With Salah I don't need the big hitters up until now. Having said that the Citeh mids are just as prone, if not more to rotation. But they are half the price.
