Mbeumo delivers as Dennis maintains fine form: FPL notes from Brentford v Watford

BRENTFORD 2-1 WATFORD

  • Goals: Pontus Jansson (£4.6m), Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) | Emmanuel Dennis (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Marcus Forss (£5.3m), Saman Ghoddos (£5.3m) | Tom Cleverley (£4.8m)
  • Bonus: Dennis x3, Mbeumo x2, Jansson x1

BACK-TO-BACK RETURNS FOR MBEUMO

He left it late, but Bryan Mbeumo’s (£5.5m) dramatic last-minute penalty means that he has now produced attacking returns in back-to-back Gameweeks, with tonight’s nine-point haul – courtesy of a goal and two bonus points – his best of the season so far.

In the absence of Ivan Toney (£6.6m), the out-of-position Frenchman was Brentford’s brightest spark on the night, running the channels effectively and, in addition to his winner, forcing a good first-half save from Daniel Bachmann (£4.2m). He ended the match with three goal attempts, while his positioning meant that he was once again the Bees’ most advanced player.

“Mbuemo deserves a lot of praise. I think he was unplayable today. I’ve said before I have the world’s best penalty taker in Ivan Toney and now maybe I have number two as well.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford’s average position map v Watford in Gameweek 16

It was a much-needed three points for Thomas Frank’s side, who went into tonight’s clash with just one win from eight games. However, they now sit in the top-half, though it is worth noting that their fixtures from this point onwards do toughen considerably:

DENNIS ON TARGET AGAIN

Following tonight’s opener, Emmanuel Dennis (£5.7m) is now Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) top-scoring forward on 84 points. The 24-year-old arrived at Vicarage Road in the summer as a relative unknown, but has since been directly involved in 13 Watford goals, a total only Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) can trump.

For the majority of tonight’s tie, it was surprisingly Dennis who took up more of a central role, with King operating off the left. They did sometimes switch, but it was notable just how much wider King was for large periods.

Josh King’s touch heatmap v Brentford in Gameweek 16

Dennis is now surely set for further price rises, with over 20k FPL managers already transferring him in tonight, though it is worth noting that he could be set to miss games in the New Year due to his involvement in the Nigeria AFCON squad.

WATFORD DENIED FIRST CLEAN SHEET LATE ON

It’s now seven defeats in nine matches for Watford under Claudio Ranieri, a period which has seen them concede a league-high 21 goals since he took charge.

The schedule, which has been particularly testing of late, has of course played a part, but the fact they are the only Premier League side yet to keep a single clean sheet all season is a huge cause for concern.

“I was very happy (in the first half), we weren’t playing how we usually play but we were winning the match. Then, in the second half, slowly we went too deep. We gave some chances to them.

My frustration has passed, now my mind is on the next match. There are other battles and we are stronger than tonight. That was my message to the players: it’s very important to react immediately.” – Claudio Ranieri

Brentford XI: Fernandez, Goode, Jansson, Janelt, Roerslev, Baptiste, Norgaard, Jensen (Ghoddos 69), Henry (Onyeka 77), Mbeumo, Wissa (Forss 69)

Watford XI: Bachmann, Femenia, Troost-Ekong, Cathcart, Ngakia, Kucka, Sissoko, Cucho (Sema 77), Cleverley (Joao Pedro 58), King, Dennis (Tufan 90+1)

They did mention something like King does well when they have possession and Dennis is better when possession is less (counter attack), so it could be King's turn vs Burnley. Then back to Dennis vs Palace.

I could easily be slatted saying this, but what about the EO? On form player with high ownership is a real threat. Gundo & Lingard (5.5-6 ish) in previous seasons killed it.

Each to there own but I'm never too fussed about EO. Just buy the players you think will do well and if you're right you'll rise. And if they happen to be non template you'll rise even faster

That's true but our first priority should be points. If it means picking the templatish players, so be it. Going against the template only works if you feel there is weak link.

King vs Dennis was oversimplified by just looking at stats and nothing else. Plus I felt using AFCON as a reason to avoid Dennis was weak considering we had 3 GWs before departure.

Could be King's turn to outscore him next week and his owner will be in "I told you so..." camp but cant really do anything about that 😀

Its an active team at least.

His differential are Robertson, Thiago, Raphinha and Vardy vs 9+DDG, Dalot, Trent, Bowen, Ronaldo.

I happen to have a template squad but I've never chosen players on the basis of templates or EOs.
The reason Dennis is the better of the two is not because of ownership, but because King is pushed out wide and Dennis is the #10 right now. That's why Dennis is more likely to get more points.

AFCON is far off. When that day comes, Salah and Dennis to Son and Origi seems straightforward.
              That's my take anyway.

Uh oh. Hadn't given a thought to the cup, but I've just checked - it's a dead team with a bench of James, Alonso and Mbeumo - all of whom will come on. Could go either way.

Surprisingly, Antonio's EO has already hit 60% (or maybe it never went down.)

Fully expecting him to get benched vs NOR and WAT. Going against him with Watkins could be worth a shot.

Yes because a team such as Leeds is still capable of scoring, especially too how Chelsea have defended recently.
Dennis v Brentford I saw as a very good matchup with their defensive injuries.

Stats are getting a bad rep

Goals, assists, shot conversion, average position and xGoT are statistics too

It's very easy to simplify the complex chaotic system of factors in the football ecosystem (including stuff like team cohesion, coaching relationships, personal motivation) into "xG and number of shots" and assume you're done with the stats. They're just a subset

For instance, someone who consistently ends up high in xG but is annoyingly poor at shot conversion is... Maupay 🙂

The eye test allows your brain to compute most of the other stats intuitively. You're collecting data when you watch the match or highlights. The things you're checking for are probably being seen by other scouts too, and actually form a very wide set of "stats"

For instance, I can compare Greenwood's shot-taking confidence with Ayew's by watching both play. The players aren't saying "I'm confident!" directly to me, but I can see it in their body language and facial expressions, even when they miss. Others can see it and usually agree too. That's data

A well written little piece my bud. It has always been my view and I find it a lot easier for others to study a bunch of numbers and let me know the result. Of course they have value but limited to say the least. I watched Dennis last night and his strength, pace, awareness and football intelligence is easy to see with the eyes test. Stats won't pick that up IMO.

        Reading this
"watched Dennis last night and his strength, pace, awareness and football intelligence is easy to see with the eyes test"
is 1000 times more valuable to me in helping to choose, than reading something like "Kings xgi is 0.3 and Kings is 0.2"

Yeah, but the problem comes from not being able to watch every game (multiple games happening at once) or remember every key moment. A player could look good in one game and not as good in the next game.

For instance, I watched Watford vs Man City last week, but I'm not watching only to scout Dennis and King, I'm trying to monitor both teams. Wasn't a good game to scout Watford anyway. All I could conclude was that Dennis looked more involved but King got closer to scoring with that big chance in the end. My decision was mainly based on AFCON as there haven't been that many pens this year to place too much importance on it.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years

Yeah. This is why I use multiple stats. As I said in the post, many other scouts are seeing these same things and noting them as data

Finding it is the hard part. I like the Members Area, and I scroll through matchday comments here when I can't watch games, even if it's days later

Stuff like shot conversion and accuracy really provide useful eye-test-like context when combined with xG

No-one finishes in the top 100 year in year out.
And very few have more than two consecutive top thousand finishes (Jon Ballantyne is an exception with three).
Some such as Fabio Borges and Finn Sollie do finish frequently in the top 10k, but not all the so-called Elite managers do.

Well written. However stats aren't accurate enough yet. Lie, big lie, stats. Let's take the pass that Rashford made to Ronaldo. It wasn't a good one, it came too behind and was technically very difficult to get a good shot. Yet xG is blind to this and doesn't seem to understand that only a better pass would have been worth xG given. XG also misses good passes if striker is unable to touch the ball for tap in. It can be question of very small margins. So I agree, some stats are half blind. Therefore eye test is still very important. And do remember, goals predict goals 😉 That is one simple stat not to forget.

The eye test does very little for me, and at times makes me overthink things. If you're decent at interpreting the numbers, you don't need to watch many games, and watching too much will give you too much information to sift through effectively. Simon March went on the Scoutcast when he was #1 with about two months to go - I think he said he'd watched about four games all season. And that was before the prominence of xG.

If you've tried playing the stats game and haven't gotten good results, and you've got the time and the patience to watch boring teams play boring games for dozens of hours every year, then the eye test is a good idea. It all comes down to personal preference. I'll live by the stats and die by the stats, because I have enough experience with both methods to know that it suits me.

Stats don't give you the full picture. But neither does the eye test or any one thing in particular. You need to take a range of things into consideration.

Nice to have a life. There are many more important things than this game

Speaking of waking up, I woke up to a generator on fire in my compound at 5am. Packed both laptops and ran out

Very happy to be here discussing millionaires kicking a ball around by 8am

Yeah! Luckily, it didn't get to the other generators or the cars parked close to it. That would have easily had the effect of a bomb, with all the fuel tanks involved

The fire got put out and we're back to normal now. Well, someone needs a new generator (they're expensive in Nigeria), but yeah 🙂

We've all done that. Usually I set the team up for the next gameweek early and if I'm lucky enough to have 2 transfers, I'll often make one of them early reserving the last one until closer to the match.

That would have been a sensible plan - I've done that myself (use 1 transfer early) occasionally. At least it's a short next game week so I won't have too long to feel sorry for myself.

          And some extra data

Say, if you have Son and the Leicester game somehow goes ahead, you're in luck. If not, you'd be a bit clearer on Spurs replacements, with more data from, say, Rangnick's second game with his preferred XI

GWs 16 to 27 are some of the most important GWs of this season. Probably even more important than DGWs, because every transfer counts now. Every 0.1m counts

I'm referring to each GW here, not the quarter as a whole. I could type a very long comment explaining each GW's importance, but it's going to be exhausting. Quick summary:

GW16: massive Man U fixture swing, most managers going from 0 to 2/3 Man U players. Fixture run until GW27
          GW18: West Ham, until GW27
          GW19: Everton, until GW26
GW20: AFCON, Chelsea fixture swing + 2 BGWs
          DGW21(?) for Spurs
GW22: TAA Jota Robbo triple-up, City vs Chelsea
          GW23: Aston Villa fixture swing
          GW25: AFCON ends
GW28: Template wildcard for multiple fixture swings

Then why dip their toe at all....as you say they make good business decisions, so they're probably judging whether having football on prime draws in more members (casual football watchers who don't want to stump up for sky's full package) and if it does then it's probably a no brainer for them Vs the cost

Yeah. Schick did a beautiful job for me last gameweek but I can’t ignore Haaland.

            Nkunku Bellingham Wirtz Hofmann

            Guerreiro Alphonso Gießelmann

            Schwäbe

            That’s my team. Lewy(C) but don’t know if I should (C) Nkunku/ Bellingham & Guerreiro/Alphonso in defence.

You gotta get Haaland back. He is class & Dortmund fixtures juicy too.

    Look on the bright side.
All the players behind me are as thick as I am and they all got King over Dennis too 🙂

My cup rival has Che Adams captain, Neves v City and Aarons 1st on the bench and he's taken a hit and he's beating my 17-2

Dennis over King one of the few transfers that went well for me.

Dias instead of Cancelo for security of starts.
Guaita instead of Ramsdale. He replaced Sa who has scored 27 since GW 13. Guaita is on 8.
    Saka over ESR.
