FPL Gameweek 17 review: Martinelli update, bargain Broja and Antonio in defence

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Wednesday’s Gameweek 17 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes throughout December.

FPL Gameweek 17 round-up:

INJURIES AND BANS

FPL Gameweek 17 review: Martinelli update, bargain Broja and Antonio's blank 1

Already without the suspended Raul Jimenez, who returns in Gameweek 18, Wolves lost Rayan Ait-Nouri to an injury in the warm-up on Wednesday and then saw Hwang Hee-chan limp from the field of play shortly after kick-off.

There has yet to be an update on either player.

All eyes were on the Brighton starting XI after “three or four” players tested positive for Covid-19 in the run-up to tonight’s fixture, so the absences of Neal Maupay, Pascal Gross, Jurgen Locadia and Jason Steele were more noteworthy than usual. Gross and Maupay will definitely miss Gameweek 18, according to their manager.

Yves Bissouma picked up his fifth booking of the season to compound Albion’s misery, while Joel Veltman appeared to pull up holding his hamstring on the stroke of full-time and is a “major doubt” for the weekend.

Tino Livramento and Armando Broja recovered from their respective issues to feature for Southampton against Palace but Adam Armstrong missed out on the 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park.

Aaron Cresswell was also absent from West Ham’s clash with Arsenal and, already with the injured Ben Johnson, the Hammers lost another full-back in the shape of Vladimir Coufal, who was sent off for two bookable offences at the Emirates.

Gabriel Martinelli limped out of that win for the Gunners, although cramp was to blame according to his manager.

“Certainly, it was one of the best [performances from Martinelli] in every aspect of the game. Physically he’s growing, today he was cramping again, and he needs to mature on that side of the game. But his overall understanding of the game is much better.” – Mikel Arteta

GAMEWEEK 17 TAKEAWAYS

ANTONIO… AT RIGHT-BACK?

The dismissal of Coufal and the unavailability of Johnson saw Michail Antonio move to right-back for a spell in the second half of Wednesday’s match in north London, reprising a role he briefly played earlier in his West Ham career.

Antonio featuring in that position against Norwich in Gameweek 18 still seems a long shot, and indeed David Moyes turned to youngster Harrison Ashby at full-back in the closing stages of the loss to the Gunners, with Antonio moving back up top.

And aside from that stint in the back four, it was another underwhelming night for owners of the forward, who is now eight games without a goal.

Antonio didn’t register a single penalty box touch or shot at the Emirates, drifting right and deep as he helped with the collective effort out of possession.

At least the upcoming fixture run should give Antonio less off-the-ball work to do but he goes into that ticker-topping stretch of games looking low on confidence.

CONCERN FOR SMITH ROWE DESPITE GOAL

Emile Smith Rowe scored his sixth goal of the season in Arsenal’s win over West Ham but it was a second successive benching for the widely owned FPL midfielder, and the prospects of him regaining his place for Gameweek 18 were dented by excellent displays from Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

Martinelli had more shots in the box than any Arsenal player at the Emirates and he really ought to have opened the scoring before he did, missing a sitter from close range – a good sign, at least, that he is capable of getting into threatening positions. His finish for the hosts’ opener was also, dare we say it, Henry-esque.

Above: Martinelli is top for expected goal involvement (xGI) in Gameweek 17 so far

Perhaps Smith Rowe’s best chance of regaining a start for the clash with Leeds is if Mikel Arteta deems alterations are necessary for a match taking place in less than 72 hours time, particularly as he has now named an unchanged side for the last three fixtures.

Martinelli’s suspected cramp was a reflection of how long he has been out of the side but it was Martin Odegaard who Smith Rowe replaced this time, so there are at least multiple routes back into the side for the benched midfielder.

SPIRITO DI SANTO

We were hailing Wolves’ backline after Gameweek 17 and Bruno Lage’s troops were at it again on Wednesday, registering their fourth clean sheet in six games. The only two goals they’ve conceded in that time were against Manchester City and Liverpool.

Yes they were indebted to a horror Enock Mwepu miss to preserve their shut-out but that was the only ‘big chance’ that Brighton carved out, with Bruno Sa not even needing to register a save point to move to the top of the FPL goalkeepers’ points table.

Romain Saiss, always good for a set-piece goal, entered the corresponding top ten list of defenders with his 15-point haul, grabbing the match-winner with a well-taken volley.

Some iffy upcoming fixtures may deter investment in Wolves defenders but their form at the back is worth bearing in mind for anyone thinking about Chelsea attackers in Gameweek 18.

Above: Only the top three clubs have conceded fewer goals than Wolves (14) in 2021/22

BUDGET BROJA SHINES AGAIN

Armando Broja made a swift return from injury to register a 12-point haul in Southampton’s entertaining 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, notching his fourth and fifth attacking returns in as many league starts.

“I was happy that Broja could make it just in time. You could see how important he was for our team. We need every player at the moment. It can be that you’re out of the squad at one moment and then you have to play.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

It’s not just a kneejerk reaction to his points that sees him firmly re-enter the FPL radar but the Saints’ injury situation up front; where he was initially an off-putting purchase due to his rotation risk status, he was down two positional rivals in the form of Adams and Armstrong at Selhurst Park.

Adams’s injury was described as “complicated” by Hasenhuttl earlier this week, while Armstrong still felt pain in his leg and was unable to participate in Gameweek 17.

Any length of absence for at least one of those strikers certainly increases Broja’s appeal, as of course does his bargain-bin price tag and the dearth of in-form forwards elsewhere in the division.

The less said about the two defences in south London the better: they are two of just four Premier League sides without a clean sheet in the last six Gameweeks, with Southampton’s total of 14 goals conceded the joint-worst.

Tino Livramento picked up a booking to earn a ‘zero’ score, while Vicente Guaita didn’t even make it onto the pitch as he was benched for Jack Butland.

The return to fitness of Joachim Andersen, absent from the starting XI in the last five Gameweeks, could be significant for Palace, at least, who seem to be this season’s “Brighton” in terms of not translating good defensive numbers into clean sheets.

        From the article you shared;

‘ "To postpone this round and also the Carabao Cup round would give everyone a week at least, or four or five days to clean and do everything at the training ground so everything is clean and you break the chain."

That does make sense to me

I think giving everyone 2 weekends to sort things out feels right. There are then 3 game weeks in very quick succession. Either way stopping this weekend seems right with a good break then till Boxing Day.

I think it’s extremely likely now, once multiple teams are having 3/4 games cancelled (spurs, burnley already on 2) it will f*** the whole schedule and a complete break seems logical

I agree. Putting aside FPL and me wanting to enjoy the football as a distraction, it’s quickly becoming a farce and there’s a sense people’s health is being needlessly risked.

If both clubs can field players why not go ahead?

Pausing is more likely to lead to a bigger suspension.

The elephant in the room is fans in stadiums. But the big difference is that we have lines of medical preventions and treatments now and a better understanding.

The impact on FPL is not a consideration at all in this, so that's the wrong lens to look at it.

I'm from India. We've had a mild first wave in comparison to the rest of the world.
But the second wave was bad and that was mainly due to lack of oxygen supply in hospitals.
India has explored the "breaking the chain" option for upto a week. But it didn't work.
The solution ultimately was to admit that we were underprepared and there were no sacrifices at the start.
People expected to carry out normal lives and not face the consequences.
I think games need to be played behind closed doors and mask mandates need to be put in place.

"COVID cases are going through the roof, everyone is dealing with it and having problems. To postpone would give everyone a week at least, 4-5 days to clean and do everything at the training ground"

I assumed they'd be looking for 2 weeks but if it's only a week I guess it won't affect congestion too badly.

        Long one, sorry:

I think postponing a week or two of fixtures is a good idea considering how many clubs are getting outbreaks right now, forcing fixture pile-ups for some clubs and not others.

However, closing training grounds for a week (or two or three) and postponing fixtures won't make a difference to infection rates in the UK and without more stringent covid restrictions up to and including another full lockdown (which is extremely unlikely to happen). It would probably have little effect on infection rates amongst the players unless coupled with strict instructions to form bubbles and have zero social contact with other people, which is never going to happen, especially amongst groups of affluent young men during party season. Even if it were enforced, several would break the rules anyway and spread the virus before anyone even realised.

In short, unless the government decide to take much firmer action nationally, then the premier league can postpone for months and still end up being in exactly the same situation the moment they try and restart. The only other option would be for the premier league and/or government deciding that they no longer care about managing the virus, so outbreaks amongst clubs will only be a factor if players are too unwell to play (as opposed to just testing positive) with ad hoc postponements in extreme cases. As the virus starts to become endemic I can genuinely see this becoming the case.

And I think Frank means well but what he is suggesting regarding cleaning won't make a difference. Cleaning probably helps a tiny bit but it's a distraction borne out of the government's consistent underlying message over the last two years that hand poor personal and environmental hygiene is the reason people catch and transmit the virus - i.e.: govt has done everything it can and if you catch the virus it's a personal failing. It isn't.

If they do this, they should just shut down until after holiday season is over.

Everyone go home to their families and instill a national lockdown again. Christmas is canceled. Restart after the Intl Break in GW22. Obviously that would not be nice for us fans but if they're serious about this, one week will do nothing. It has to be a nationwide effort or else we just keep going and try our best to deal with it as it comes.

Wolves have been fantastic. Problem is they need an opponent, and if the opponent has an outbreak then the fixture can be rearranged. Now, if the PL were to start refusing postponements and force clubs either to play uninfected youth players or take a nominal 3-0 defeat, I bet clubs would pretty quickly find a way to manage these outbreaks.

What's done is done no point in worrying about it now, at least most were in the same boat this week. I rolled an FT this week but could only do it as I had to take -8 last week just to get 10 out myself and if we have a 2 week break only one of those 3 transfers I made will probably stay in my team, but it'll give us all a chance to do a mini-wc of sorts through free transfers at least

Same, got DDG last week for Sanchez.
This week got Bachmann for Foster.

It feels unfair and laughable at the same time, because there's NO WAY we could see that coming.

Takes all the fun away when some people are really badly affected, and others aren't affected at all. There's no skill in that, just (bad) luck

Yeah. It sucks. And it seems being patient won't be rewarded either.

If all the games get called off, it would absolutely have been right to have done Ronaldo + Brownhill > Watkins + Foden to get a strong team for this week.

Absolutely right. I normally plan for a set of three games. Not worth it right now I guess. My immediate rival transferred in exactly those two players.

I don't think this is a case of patience. I couldn't fathom how some people thought blank, Brighton for Ronaldo was worth keeping him for. Some even started Brownhill this week for that reason. How is this maximizing points?

I think keeping Ronaldo for BHA new BUR is very reasonable. The fixtures are very good and there are few good forward options.

It also costs transfers to move players around in a turbulent time as opposed to just holding. Watkins and Foden hauling the very week they're brought in was not expected. If Watkins and Foden blanked or scored like 6 points each after taking a hit to bring them in, it would be considered a mistake especially if Ronaldo and United are back in training and the games are on.

I think this is where a difference in assessing available information, risk-averse and pro-activeness comes into play.

We knew about the first postponement, we knew Foden was fit and Watkins had form and fixture going.

Rumours about United-Brighton to be called off were already emerging.

Going for Foden and Watkins in early matches was also strategy as more cancellations were already in play. Hence most of us picked VCs accordingly.

So it sounds more like some trying to justify their picks.

      Complete shocker this week:
6 points. 4 players to go.

Transfer was Bachmann in for Foster (kept DDG).
Feels like a game over for the season, feels really bad when the randomness affects some teams way more than others.

Especially disappointing since I've been in and around 100K up to this point, which is better than I've ever managed previous seasons (best finish: 8K).

Sorry for the whining, just needed to vent a bit.
Hope you guys are doing better.

Keep your head up mate, it’s another unprecedented season where it’s just impossible to try and plan for anything.

Obviously wish all affected players and clubs well, but there will be plenty of DGWs to try and bounce back!

Thanks mate, really appreciate it. I guess I'm not even frustrated, just feel more distance to the game when things are so random for the time being.

Which could be a good think, ultimately – maybe less overthinking and more rational decisions? Oh well.

Yeah, let's bounce back when the DGWs stack up!

Yes , we all gets like this , I only have 9 pts. I am sure others on here are same as you. But all you get here is people trolling on how good there pick is.

What baffles me is people think of transfers when you not even know who available.

Ah yes, that's rough! Agree that we shouldn't be thinking about transfers now until we know more. But again, those who make early moves will probably get more trouble for it potentially.

So lots of players who have refused to take the vaccine are suddenly concerned about their health, interesting.

Liverpool are 100% vaccinated and have no cases. Go figure.

Teams that have low vaccine rates should be forced to field youth players.

You surely can’t be suggesting that a vaccination *prevents* you getting it

not sure what the second sentence says.

I think it's more a case of the mindset of these players. If they're not getting a vaccine they're probably also carefree about the situation and don't give a fek about others so them being worried now because it's directly affecting them is kinda shitty.

            • 8 Years

            I think that’s a horrible assumption

You may choose not to get a vaccine but can still act responsibly

And changing your mind isn’t necessarily a negative and self centred - could be for any reason, not least waiting for more compelling long term information

Choosing not to get a vaccine is in of itself an irresponsible act. People not getting vaccinated leads to higher infection rates which allows the virus to mutate further. If everyone would get vaccinated the pandemic would end sooner. Doesn't matter if you're being careful. The virus doesn't care.

Agree with you partly. But chances of infecting someone while you manage to stay home are 0 or pretty close to 0. Doesn't matter if your vaccinated or not. Chances of getting infected are still there though if you don't live alone and others don't stay home.

Those unvaccinated who can't get the vaccine because of a medical reason aren't irresponsible either.

Those unvaccinated who live life like there's no covid are irrsponsible that I agree with.

Well we're talking about healthy football players here not immunocompromised people who can't get them. I'm aware people who have medical reasons can't get them. I'm not trying to go into a debate about society in general. I was talking about the healthy football players who don't stay at home all the time in all likelihood

                • 8 Years

There are legitimate health concerns as to why you would not get the vaccine - it’s not as binary as “vaccine good, no vaccine bad”

I'm not going into a debate regarding people who have medical reasons for not getting it. I was very clearly talking about the football players who are as fit as any person can be. The pros of getting the vaccine far outweigh any supposed serious health concerns that will in all likelihood never happen to them. So in this case it is as binary as "vaccine good, no vaccine bad."

this is true as well, i think some people have this idea that a football club is almost like a boarding school. these guys have lots of free time, once the head off in their cars from training then what they do for the rest of the day cant really be policed. its now in the arena of 'personal responsibility', the same as everybody else

Sam Wallace in the Daily Telegraph:

"The reality is that postponing fixtures is not a simple process. Each situation for each potential postponement is different," he writes.

"No two outbreaks are the same. A club might have 14 fit players but a closed training ground, with no alternatives, in the build-up to a game.

"The nature of the outbreak is also critical. An “uncontrolled” outbreak is the most dangerous, when medics no longer believe that they have the virus isolated and there is a chance that the whole squad is in danger of infection.

"This has become another season when the comfort of the normal rules, and the normal whinging about them, does not apply."

Why are people wanting a fire break for EPL.

I can’t think of anything worse than a Christmas without football. Forced to watch Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Bun that.

If anything just play with limited fans and ramp up restrictions within football clubs.

Nah. People's health more important than football right now.

Not so sure he was using this context. More the fact that it is another limitation from something we all enjoy.

aside from the health factor-which is absolutely paramount- if we look at this as a 'product ', which is how it is seen, then do you not think its quality seriously decreases the longer this goes on? look at the leicester spurs game tonight and whose going to be missing from that. injuries as well are also covid related becasue managers cant rotate if a like for like is isolating and they then play too many games and a hammy goes or worse.

Agree: it is not just about health, it is about it becoming too much of a lottery.

Having a condensed season, both club and country, increases the likelihood of fatigue, which impacts the immune system which can weaken players defence against COVID. The football powers that be, a lot if them anyway, don't give a $hi+ about player welfare and even less about supporters. Money talks.

Unless you're Chris Vallance, you're spouting crap with all the knowledge of a Boris.
It may, it may not. The point is YOU have no idea so don't pretend you do.

FPL needs to allow free transfers when players are ruled out with COVID.

I hear you but why? sometimes it slows down the Twitter followers from templating sides. (just a thought; note my username)

Starting from last season in that case.

I wanted at least 3 FT’s every gw until the situation is sorted. Taking hits for unavailable players & then some games get postponed after the deadline really sucks tbh

What will cancelling this weekends game achieve? Nothing imo. Cases will be even higher the week after.

They could clear these cases then go back into a bubble within the team/families like last season?

are you genuinely thinking about this from that perspective or just the fact that football will stop? a break will allow teams to get their houses in order, isolate were the infections are spreading from (which not every team has been able to do) , give players a rest which they need anyway. id hate football and fpl to stop but right now this is a complete mess and only getting worse

The problem may still remain. I fear that this omicron is able to spread also outdoors and teams will be unable to have those bubbles working and contain the virus. So we could see unchanged situation despite short or longer break. This is totally unknown territory now and there are only bad and worse possibilities left.
