Scoutcast: How to tackle the Covid chaos in FPL

Joe and Seb help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for a decimated Gameweek 18.

The Covid pandemic has wreaked havoc with the Premier League schedule already in Gameweek 17, with six teams missing out due to the spread of the infection.

Gameweek 18 looks similarly chaotic, with half the matches postponed. At the time of writing it is still unclear whether any of the weekend’s fixtures will take place.

Amid the confusion, Joe and Seb try to make sense of it all and offer their top tips for tackling Covid chaos in FPL.

They reveal their plans based on every eventuality, from a limited Gameweek 18 to a circuit breaker for a few weeks.

For Joe, goalkeepers and a better midfield look to be his top priorities, while a freshly Wildcarded Seb ponders his options.

Manchester City’s assets already featured on the Christmas shopping lists of many FPL managers. Their 7-0 thrashing of Leeds in Gameweek 17 ensured they became a top priority.

Armed with a plethora of heatmaps and statistics, Seb offers an extensive guide to the best options to consider and the influence that a returning Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) may have on Pep Guardiola’s side for their next matches.

Goals imminent, worst defences and best expected statistics stars are also covered, as is the progress of the show’s community team. There’s also a frisk of the next four fixtures, whenever they may be scheduled.

Due to the tight turnaround of games, and a family trip to the cinema to see the new Spiderman film for Joe, this week’s show took place late afternoon on Thursday 16 December. This sadly counted Andy out of proceedings due to work commitments.

If the fixtures that remain end up happening, what's the maximum points hits you're willing to take to field a starting XI?

-8 is still probably the max but it depends on the squad

As many as it takes if they're all players u think will give returns. Getting 11 for sake of 11 isn't worth it.

Looking at doing -8 min or -12 to get me 11 out hopefully!

I am being told that -6 is the new -12 though!

-8 since they could blank next week

Not taking any hits, no guarantee they’ll actually play and/or you won’t spend more reverting the hits. Too much team value tied up in the squad too

No such number, you have to calculate each transfer separately. If you end up on no hits or -40 pts doesn't matter as long as you will benefit from transfers.

Generally I would say it is reasonable to take a hit to transfer out a player with a blank GW since most of the players you will get in will have the expected points for that fixture above 4 and even if it is a bit below 4 you need to also factor in the distribution of expected points (much larger right tail - players rarely get fewer points than 2 and there is much higher upside if they score a goal or get an assist).

But right now you also need to calculate the probability that a player you transferred in for a hit will not play due to unexpected Covid cancelation - which makes hits slightly less attractive.

This needs to be said every season yet people don't learn. Took a -16 myself in the last 2 weeks and got a green arrow this week.

Fair enough, I only took a -4 and that’s seen me fall from 14k to 30k. Maybe Ronaldo to Watkins would have helped this week, but unless you’re captaining different players when taking big hits, it’ll be marginal gains at best.

Swapped my 4m bench defender around and what I assumed would be a safe way to absorb 2 points of the hit, ended up with 0.

The gains can be more than marginal over a few weeks even without captaincy. It doesn't have to work within the same week.

I mean, I sold Ronaldo and got Foden + Mahrez (-8) this week which netted me 17 pts, but this was a case of high variance. My intention was for it to work over 4 weeks (until they face Brentford)

    GW17 Mini-League Leaders:

This reports on the leaders of various Fantasy Football Scout FPL mini-leagues and community competitions after Gameweek 17, and also on the latest update to the FFS Live Hall of Fame, which sees a popular poster return to the top ten.

    ** FFS OPEN MINI-LEAGUE

Srecko Kurtovic leads for a ninth week in the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/68048/standings/c, league code gsnskx) and is now sixth overall.

    ** FFS COMMUNITY MEMBERS MINI-LEAGUE

Daniel Masson-Abraham leads for an eleventh week in the Fantasy Football Scout Members mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/361/standings/c) and is still third overall. He is level on points with world number one Niall Crosbie and world number two Oscar (FPL Focal) but has made a greater number of transfers.
This league is also open to all and the league code is visible in the widget on the FFS Home Page when signed in, but only those with a registered FFS account (paid or free) will be eligible for prizes.

    ** FFS HEAD-TO-HEAD LEAGUES

Martin Stubbs still leads League 1 of MIR’s FFS Head-to-Head Leagues (https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/head-to-head-leagues/), 8 points ahead of Cak Juris. He is 621st in our recently updated FFS Live Hall of Fame.

Rohan Chatarjee in League 8 Division 114 and Ryan Rojo in League 9 Division 149 are the only managers to have won all 17 of their matches so far.

    **FFS CUPS

Gameweek 17 was the third round of the FFS Members Cup and the fourth round of the FFS Open Cup. The full lists of fixtures in these rounds can be found in https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/cup/27/rounds/3/ and https://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/cup/26/rounds/4/ respectively.
These FFS Cups are organised by Fantasy Football Scout and should not be confused with any similarly named League Cups listed on FPL’s Leagues & Cups page.

ZIKOFLY (591st) is the highest ranked player through to round 4 of the FFS Members Cup.
donnellyc is the only previous winner through to round 5 of the FFS Open Cup, and the highest ranked player still in is elfortu (109th).

** MODS & CONS AND FFS FAMILY

Chris James (elFozzie) leads for a third week in the FFS Mods & Cons mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/366/standings/c) and is now 8,879th overall.

Obay Eid (FPL_Milanista) leads for a sixteenth week in the FFS Family mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/342/standings/c). He is now 836th overall and 45th in the FFS Live Hall of Fame.

    ** LAST MAN STANDING

See https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2021/07/24/the-last-man-standing-competition-2021-2022/ for details of TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing competition (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/26234/standings/c, league code 6dcode).

The highest scorer in Gameweek 17 was Greg Rye with 99 points. He is 5,129th overall and on course for a third top 6k finish.

The safety score was 50, with 116 teams to be removed and 999 going through to Gameweek 18. It will remain open till Gameweek 22, but new entrants must pass all the previous safety scores (https://torresmagic.webs.com/lmsupdate.htm) to qualify.

    ** TOPS AND VETS

Tabz Hashimi has regained the lead from Greg Logan in my Top 10k Any Season mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/1378/standings/c, league code kgmryk) and is now 275th overall. He previously led from Gameweek 10 to Gameweek 15.

Joe Vaughan has regained the lead from Timothy Leichtfried in my Multiple Top 10k Finishes mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/1386/standings/c, league code 03t1fd), which is for teams with two or more top 10,000 finishes, and is now 2,529th overall. Joe has led four times since Gameweek 12 and Timothy twice.

Scott Freemann leads for a third week in PDM’s Top 1k ANY season mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/10031/standings/c, league code 01ef8y) and has risen to 764th overall.

2009/10 FPL champion Jon Reeson (Westfield Irons) leads for a thirteenth week in Simon March’s FPL Champions League (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/2594/standings/c) and is now 9,064th overall.

James Stewart leads for a second week in Chaballer’s Hall of Fame Top 1k mini-league (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/39527/standings/c, league code 1zpaad) and has risen to 4,508th overall. He is 58th in the FFS Live Hall of Fame.

** FFS LIVE HALL OF FAME

The FFS Live Hall of Fame (which, unlike the FFS Career Hall of Fame, can only be viewed by Premium Members) was updated again after Gameweek 16. 62,922 managers participating in the Fantasy Football Scout and Fantasy Football Scout Members mini-leagues are now ranked and the new top ten, with FFS Career Hall of Fame positions in brackets, is:
    1(3) Finn Sollie.
    2(2) Tom Stephenson.
    3(1) Fábio Borges.
    4(30) David Williams.
    5(15) Scott McIrvine.
    6(10) Mark Hurst.
7(7) Jon Ballantyne (Mad Moose FC).
    8(4) Morten Tveito.
    9(8) Garry Murray (Bubz).
    10(17) Gary Lee.
Garry Murray (Bubz), with six top 10k finishes in the past seven seasons, two of them in the top thousand, returns to the top ten. David was the highest ranked at the time of the update (839th overall). Finn and Scott were also in the top 6k, and all ten were in the top 150k.

    JANUARY to MAY LEAGUE

And finally, don’t forget to enter the January to May League (league code fy0acw) which starts scoring in Gameweek 21. Can you outscore the 580 teams that have already entered over the second half of the season?

If you’re happy to lose Gallagher then option 2 I like best
What did you end up with this week?

Btw I wouldn’t count total players yet, I’m preparing for tot v pool to be off

      1. FCSB
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

Far out, although I suppose if the pool game is off we will all be missing the same 3 players

I ended up on 60, happy with that after the start, the Alonso CS helped massively

How many do you currently have playing this week? Are you considering take hits to field 11 if required?

I finished on 81 with no keeper which was massive. I think 90k GW rank

I currently have 451 setup with no subs or keeper.
          Have 2FT though.
Looking at Guaita to Ramsdale and can’t really see a second move with only 0.2 left itb so might roll the other.

Apparently Watford might have a triple gw soon and most likely to have a double

Spread the risk - that's 20% of your squad gone if there is a postponement

With no COVID to worry about it would be ok, but with the amount of postponements 3 from one team is much more risky.

Seems a total waste when the missing players will have dgw soon. The chip power more valuable later

So transfer the missing players out instead? The Free Hit means you don't lose them

Well it’s not a one week issue so you FH this week then get your same team back then more postponements, then what…
I think it’s best to spread the risk as much as possible but don’t just get in players that have a fixture eg Laca, personally don’t think he’s an option and would just be using another transfer to move him out

Hey guys, still have my WC which I was going to save until GW19. I have 9 players with a game this weekend and am reluctant to take hits given I can play my WC after the weekend. Thoughts on best use of my FT to get me up to 10 players?

    A - Sanchez > Martinez
    B - Antonio > Watkins
    C - Livra > Targett

    TAA - James - Cancelo
    Salah - Jota - Mount - Bilva
    Dennis - Wilson

    Sanchez - Foster - Antonio - Gallagher - Livra - Duffy

7 starters here (if Bernardo starts- otherwise 6).
    1ft, 0.7m ITB.
What would be your move(s)? Thinking maybe a -4. Not very keen on removing the United guys but selling Ronaldo would free up nice funds.
Some options- DDG-> Ramsdale, Diop/Dalot-> Tierney.
    Bowen/Bernardo-> Foden. Ronaldo -> Watkins

    Starters this week-
    TAA, James, Cancelo,
    Ramsey, Jota, Bernardo, Salah.

    Non starters so far-
    Bachmann, DDG,
    Dalot, Diop,
    Bowen,
    Dennis, King, Ronaldo.
