FPL team news: Injury updates ahead of EFL Cup quarter-finals

Before the festive football commences with Gameweek 19, there is a round of midweek EFL Cup quarter-finals involving seven Premier League teams:

  • Arsenal vs Sunderland
  • Brentford vs Chelsea
  • Liverpool vs Leicester City
  • Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United

Here is a round-up of Tuesday’s press conferences, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team information found on our Predicted Line-ups page and Injuries and Bans feed.

Virgil van Dijk, Thiago, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson - potential Liverpool return dates amid Covid and illness | LiverpoolWorld

LIVERPOOL

Four players are out with Covid – Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones – whilst Andrew Robertson begins his three-match domestic suspension for the red card received at Spurs.

“Health comes first so we have to make sure we don’t rush it, that they come back whenever they are ready. People underestimate when it’s 10 days’ quarantine, they think they can play immediately on day 11, but football doesn’t work like this.” – assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders

Jordan Henderson missed Sunday’s 2-2 draw with a regular cold but is available again, although Divock Origi “is still not training with the team” due to a knee injury. Nathaniel Phillips (cheekbone), Adrian (calf) and Harvey Elliott (ankle) are still on the sidelines.

CHELSEA

Thomas Tuchel was quite open with his injury updates here, seemingly ruling out the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek (ankle), Andreas Christensen (knock) and Trevoh Chalobah (knock) as well as their four known Covid victims – Ben Chilwell, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku.

“The players [with COVID] are OK [but] they are out for ten days before they can be released. We don’t really know when they can play. Nobody is back except for Jorginho. Andreas Christensen is very doubtful and the same for Trevoh Chalobah.”

Jorginho (back, plus an inconclusive Covid-test result) is available again but Hakim Ziyech (calf) may not be. Tuchel will not play N’Golo Kante this time, calling himself “close to irresponsible” for handing the Frenchman all 90 minutes against Wolves.

ARSENAL

Takehiro Tomiyasu was removed after 63 minutes of the Gunners’ 4-1 win at Leeds, which Mikel Arteta says was due to muscular discomfort.

“We decided to take him off, he wasn’t 100 per cent confident to continue in the game, and hopefully he’s not injured.”

Pablo Mari and Albert Sambi Lokonga remain out due to Covid, as Sead Kolasinac (ankle) continues his absence.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

There was good news from Antonio Conte regarding his squad’s Covid situation.

“All the players are now negative, which is good news for us. As you know well, with Covid, you need a bit of time because, for sure, many players at this moment are not so fit because they had to face this situation, but the good news is all the players are available. We have a little bad news in Ryan Sessegnon, he had a problem at the end of the game against Liverpool (on Sunday), he’s the only player with Cristian Romero who is injured.”

A muscular problem is set to keep Ryan Sessegnon out for around two weeks, as Cristian Romero (hamstring) remains out until early 2022.

WEST HAM UNITED

Vladimir Coufal will be suspended for the cup tie, following his Gameweek 17 sending off at Arsenal that couldn’t be served last weekend because of postponement. Centre backs Kurt Zouma (hamstring) and Angelo Ogbonna (knee) are still injured, with Aaron Cresswell pencilled in for a return having missed four matches with a back injury.

“We’re very good. The training ground has been very good and most are okay. We have got one or two with the virus, but most are very good and long may that continue.” – David Moyes

Ben Johnson (hamstring) and Ryan Fredericks (groin) are unlikely to take part at Tottenham.

LEICESTER CITY

With their last two league fixtures postponed due to Covid, it could be a patched-up Foxes squad that faces Liverpool on Wednesday.

James Justin (knee/match fitness) and Wesley Fofana (leg) have been out for a while, with undefined illnesses for Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, Jannik Vestergaard, Ayoze Perez and Hamza Choudhury.

Jonny Evans left the Gameweek 16 win against Newcastle United after five minutes because of a hamstring problem, the same injury as Caglar Soyuncu.

BRENTFORD

After recent Covid problems for Ivan Toney, Ethan Pinnock and many other players and staff, head coach Thomas Frank delivered positive news on the Bees’ current state, having also missed the last pair of matches.

“We have enough. We will have 11 players. We are in a fine place. We had six/seven [positive cases] last Thursday, but after lateral flow and PCR tests, we’ve had zero for the past two days.”

They are still without David Raya (knee), Kristoffer Ajer (hamstring), Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen (thigh) and Josh Dasilva (hip) but Frank said “let’s see what we will do” in regards to starting forward Marcus Forss.

FPLMarc Newcastle fan that spends far too much time thinking about FPL.

DCL is cheaper, I am not sold on asset who is dropping in price. Unless they start to perform, they continue to do so. But he has been very nice fpl, both to have and then not to 🙂

Bottomed, apologies.....Was just messing about and realised i could do Bilva + Foden >> Son &+ Martinelli for exact funds.....

I then realised that i can't do it becasue too many Arsenal players had been selected already (Ramsdale ESR & Tierney)

didn't think i would say that this season haha.

i can however do Bilva + Antonio >> Son + Broja for exact funds, any takers on this move for a -4?

Doh! Just noticed this above Freshy, cheers for that pal, yeah i a lot of me wants to keep Antonio, be foolish to get rid, but I want Son in my team and he is always such a differential for me in my ML, tied first right now and wanna break away from him haha

I'm also in the camp of 3 Arsenal players, ideally wanting Martinelli. But I don't think a hit is worth it. Especially not for players who are nailed and can produce in their own right.

I probs would bench Broja so that I could play maybe Regillon.

My team as of right now and line up for Boxing Day is:

        Ramsdale
        TAA - Cancelo - James - Tierney
        Foden - Jota - ESR - Salah - Bilva
        Antonio

    Which one should I play?

Tbh, id play either alonso v villa or dalot v newcastle. All 3 attackers vs tough teams, maybe, just maybe broja v whu can be said otherwise. But id start the defenders personally. 🙂

I think the indications are bench duty. Injury and emergence of Martinelli unfortunate coincidence but we've seen he can produce from the bench and rotation/loss of form (others)/injuries will soon see him starting again. Fir now he'll be first sub for me this week and I'm fine if he's required

I don't see it this way, personally, we could see Arsenal play all 5 of Odegaard, Martinelli, ESR, Saka & Lacazette given the opponent.
We've seen Odegaard play CM before this season.

Your defenders all have good odds of a CS so 5 atb makes sense IMO. I'd be tempted to put king ahead of ESR as ESR likely to be benched again but we've seen what he can do from the bench and wolves will be a tough nut to crack for Watford so it's probably a 50/50 that one

With Christensen and Hwang out I may be struggling for 11 players again, even presuming that matches go ahead. I really want Reguilon but I’m 0.1 off Broja with him. Is Cucho a viable pick (particularly with Dennis off in a couple of weeks)? Or should I look at someone like Emerson Royal?

I'd roll the transfer. GTG as your bench should cover you.

I’ve got almost exactly the same team and I’ve just done C with exact money and worried I’d be priced out if I left it any longer. I think Son is essential now.

Only if postponements make WC necessary.

Next if you can. Huge advantage to know more about possible dgw:s and ship those assets in.

I’m reading apparantly Villa Chelsea has the best chance of postponement. So you may have no choice

Apprantly there’s a good chance Villa Chelsea gets called off? Damn. Alonso James Watkins might be a problem.

If it’s called I’ll probably be forced into moving one of them, more than likely the least nailed in Alonso. Who’d you look to bring in? I like the look of Reguillon.

I have only Alonso and James atm. If only this fixture is called off, it's a problem. If enough other matches are off, then hits are going to fly and it may be easier to downgrade them.

Yeah i’m thinking of shifting Alonso, Reguillon could be a good shout.

I'd say so but given Chelsea are playing tonight I'm doubting that'll happen. Tuchel said they've has 2 days now of no further positive cases so I think it'll be fine

There are too many assumptions and predictions with the overriding issue of Covid at the moment. This is not a criticism as we all tend to do it but the "what ifs" are taking over and any mention of preparing a team at this stage have close to nil value.
If we look at the overall picture, knowing the postponed games, does it really matter when the DGW's are likely to appear? Ben Crellin is a handy guy to listen to and we can work on the premise GW22 is almost certain and GW21 likely; the actual fixtures though are more questionable.
We are almost certain to experience other cancelations and possible crowd restrictions. So what can we do now?
Look at the expected fixtures to come and see who you really want to keep hold of. In my case it will be Cancelo, TAA and Jota. Most of us will have these 3 so who and when are we going to manipulate in and out of our squad?
With consideration of the above, I look at my players who will have DGW's going forward with less concern about home/away. (Last year behind closed doors threw this aspect into disarray) I have 6 Citeh/Pool players who. apart from Salah there is no rush to kick out. I have 8 players getting a double at a minimum, but no obvious targets in Spurs and ManU.
So I am concentrating in the "no matter what happens" scenario and targeting these players. I have 19 20 21 to effect the most important so I will get Son, Ron, Reg and DDG. Citeh assets will have to go, simply because there are no guarantees of playing time for 1 GW.
At the end of the day my only certainties are (inclusive of what I have are:
    DDG (Guaita)
    TAA Cancelo Reguilon (Livra Rjames)
    Son Bowen Jota Madison (Foden)
    Ronaldo Broja (Dennis)
I will have a few bob to make changes thereafter and without even trying I land up with a sound squad. The players in brackets will be in and out I am sure,
Who knows what template is but this team won't be too far off without calamities arising.
How are most of you going about it without talking chip usage ATM?

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)

Primarily looking at assets that could benefit from DGWs but also that I'd be happy to have in isolation if it doesn't happen. I have a few spots that I'm happy to be fluid with, a few players I need to get rid of and some particular targets. Key is being adaptable and not trying to have one defined, specific plan

100% mate. My ramblings were trying to define that. I we have 4 transfers left until GW21 it is the order we choose at the timing we make them.

Chaos could be a ladder. If postponements continue and there are going to be forced situations to take hits to field starting XI, those "-2" transfers will become useful. Fitting both Ronaldo and Son into my team with Salah demands too many transfers before Afcon, so I have come to conclusion that it has to be forgotten. I will try to avoid hit this week, but Che vs Villa and other fixtures are off, Alonso to Spurs def is on cards for example. Therefore my plan is to know who I will want to sell and who my target players are.

You are right. Salah will be an enabler for the likes of Son but do we need Son now? I will be keeping 2 tfrs even though I have Laca waiting to go. 2 tfrs are pretty important IMO

January looking bleak for Pool. Salah, Mane and Keita away on international duty and games are likely to go behind closed doors where they have struggled in the past. Could be a decisive period in the title battle.

Same for many bud. All it does is change the order of your transfers, not so much the transfer itself.
